K-State Wheat Quality Lab boosts milling and baking quality of up-and-coming varieties 1,000 grams at a time.

The journey from a potential genetic cross to the latest released wheat variety requires years of testing by public and private wheat breeders. They keep their eye on every aspect of agronomic performance&nbsp;from&nbsp;disease resistance to standability. Equally important is the partnership between wheat breeders and the Wheat Quality Lab at Kansas State University. Researchers at the lab help streamline the wheat breeding process by ensuring only lines with acceptable or superior milling and baking performance become the varieties Kansas wheat producers eventually plant and harvest.&nbsp;

“Agronomic performance and end-use quality are both critically important when selecting wheat varieties for commercial production,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations. “Supported by the two-penny-per-bushel wheat checkoff, the Kansas Wheat Quality Lab provides breeders, researchers and producers with the information they need to select which wheat lines to advance and which varieties to grow.”

Breeders like Guorong Zhang, K-State wheat breeder based at the K-State Agricultural Research Center in Hays, create about 800 new experimental lines each year - the critical step in a decade-long research process.&nbsp;However, not all of these lines have acceptable flour and baking qualities. Early sorting of which lines do or do not meet those standards saves time and cost for further testing down the road.&nbsp;

“Quality is an important trait for breeders; we don’t want to release a variety with poor quality,” Zhang said. “Thanks to the lab, they can evaluate all our advanced breeding lines. Based on the lab testing, we can see the lines with poor quality, and we will not continue those lines.”

The Kansas Wheat Quality Lab&nbsp;annually&nbsp;tests 350 to 400 advanced lines from the K-State wheat breeding programs.&nbsp;It takes until year five in the breeding program to have enough seed to run preliminary quality tests like protein content and mixograph. But, as lines go through more field testing, more seeds are harvested from each line, allowing for more extensive quality evaluations.&nbsp;

“Breeders can select for factors that determine agronomic performance, but milling and baking performance has to&nbsp;be tested&nbsp;in the lab,” said Yonghui Li, director of the Wheat Quality Lab.&nbsp;“These tests require specialized equipment&nbsp;along with training&nbsp;and experience to determine milling and baking quality.”

A sample consists of 1,000 grams of wheat. The lab first looks at the sample using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy technology. These tests allow researchers to examine protein quantity and test the moisture content of the grain.&nbsp;

Researchers then temper the grain - or add a little bit of water to help make the milling process easier. Then, the sample&nbsp;is milled&nbsp;to separate the bran - the external coating of the wheat kernel - from the endosperm - the white part of the wheat kernel that becomes white flour. This resulting flour sample&nbsp;is tested&nbsp;too&nbsp;- looking at color and how much flour can&nbsp;be produced&nbsp;from the sample - the higher the amount, the better for millers.&nbsp;

The testing then progresses to looking at protein quantity and quality and dough properties. Tests like the mixograph and farinograph determine dough-mixing properties like water absorbance, mixing stability and more.&nbsp;

The final step is to take the flour, add water, yeast, sugar and salt and bake a pup loaf of bread, following standard protocols. Researchers then examine the quality of that bread - from the volume of the loaf to the crumb.&nbsp;

The combined results of these tests&nbsp;are given&nbsp;back to K-State wheat breeders, who use the information to help determine which lines to advance in their breeding programs. The milling and baking tests&nbsp;are repeated&nbsp;each year as lines are in the advanced stages of the program, meaning by the time a variety is released, breeders have four to five years of quality data available.&nbsp;

In addition to experimental lines, the lab tests 30 to 40 samples each year as a final evaluation before they are released by public and private wheat breeders throughout the Great Plains.&nbsp;The results are submitted&nbsp;back&nbsp;to the Wheat Quality Council, which compiles the results into an annual report.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;main&nbsp;funding for the lab’s operations - necessary equipment&nbsp;maintenance along with a&nbsp;full-time staff member and a team of undergraduate student workers - comes from the Kansas wheat checkoff.&nbsp;In turn, the lab helps support the reputation of Kansas wheat as having high-quality wheat, creating more opportunities in domestic and international markets.&nbsp;

“With those checkoff dollars, we can evaluate quality each year and work with our breeders to create those best-performing varieties for Kansas,” Li said.&nbsp;“In turn, when producers choose varieties with better end-use quality, it improves&nbsp;the&nbsp;overall quality and marketability&nbsp;of Kansas wheat.”&nbsp;

HARVEY COUNTY — Through the first three days of cleanup from May 19’s severe weather event, the Harvey County Solid Waste Department received 151 tons of tree debris into the facility from 202 truckloads.

Debris cleaning continues throughout the county. Municipalities within the county have announced their respective programs to aid residents in picking up and hauling damaged brush and limbs. The Solid Waste Department has maintained regular operating hours for residents that choose to bring loads of brush directly to the facility.

Residents that sustained significant property damage or are in need of clean-up supplies can request assistance through the American Red Cross. Please call 1-800-redcross (1-800-733-2767).

All County-maintained roadways closed due to storm damage have since reopened. Harvey County Road and Bridge will lend equipment and staff to the cities of Burrton and Halstead over the coming weeks to assist their respective clean-up efforts.

The Harvey County Appraiser’s Office continues damage assessments in Newton, Halstead and Burrton. Residents in the rural, northern and eastern parts of the county that had their property damaged in the storms are encouraged to contact the Appraiser’s Office. The data gathered from damage assessments can help determine if the county is eligible for state aid and resources. Residents can contact the Appraiser’s Office at 316-284-6820.

Harvey County Parks staff have cleared debris from all three County-owned parks. The power has been restored at West Park. The bait shops at West Park and East Park will operate their regularly scheduled hours through the holiday weekend.

The Harvey County Health Department was closed Monday and Tuesday due to power outage, and provided limited services on Wednesday, but was able to resume normal operations today. Residents seeking appointments and services can contact the Health Department at 316-283-1637.

Evergy reports fewer than five customers remain impacted by outages in the county.

Harvey County Solid Waste, Road and Bridge assist with storm cleanup

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Salt City Racing is back at the half-mile oval on the Kansas State Fairgrounds Friday night and Phil Nightingale said April was a good start, but they are going to tweak some things.

"The sound system we had was less desirable, I guess is what I would say," Nightingale said. "We have went out and invested some money in a different sound system. I listened to it yesterday and it sounds very good. Everyone will be able to hear things better. We've got a few lineup changes we're going to make for the drivers. The other confusion we had was tickets getting in. If you buy your tickets online, you can just go right through the gate."

Tickets are cheapest if you <a href="https://www.myracepass.com/tracks/1778">buy them online</a>. Adult General Admission tickets are $18. Kids General Admission tickets are $12. Pit passes are $35. The numbers were good in April, but they need even more folks on Friday night.

"We scanned 1907 through the gate," Nightingale said. "We had 432 pit passes, is the exact numbers that went through."

The classes to run on Friday will be the same as the ones in April:

Pits open at 3 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. Hot Laps are at 6:15 p.m. and racing is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As part of a hearing Thursday in the&nbsp;Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson gave praise to Hutchinson's Cosmosphere in comments to Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, the ranking member on that subcommittee.

"Senator Moran, I just, as you were talking, I want to recall, that one of the finest space museums is located in Hutchinson, Kansas," Nelson said of the Cosmosphere. "I had no idea, when I was out there visiting with you, it's extraordinary."

Nelson then gave kudos to another museum in Weatherford, Oklahoma, the Stafford Air and Space Museum, but Moran noted that those who are headed to space soonest are pleased with what Hutchinson has to offer, as well.

"The astronauts for Artemis called, as a group, and the beginning of that conversation was, you do know, Senator Moran, that you have the best space museum in the world in Kansas," Moran said.

Nelson noted that research and development in the space program and in the National Science Foundation is critical for our future.

NASA Administrator with high praise for Cosmosphere on Capitol Hill

INMAN, Kan. — The Inman High School Teutons softball team is headed to the state tournament later this week for the fourth time in program history, and the first time since 2010.

Inman will open class 2-1A state tournament play on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Hays-Thomas More Prep-Marian at the Green Sports Complex in Pratt. The Teutons are the No. 4 seed with a 17-4 record, while the Monarchs are 21-8 and the No. 5 seed.&nbsp;

The Inman roster features one senior, two juniors, six sophomores and seven freshmen. The Teutons have relied heavily on the strong freshmen class. Of the nine starters in the regional championship game, seven of them were underclassmen, including four freshmen and three sophomores.

"You always hear how so and so is going to be a really good softball player and you just never believe it until you see it," head coach Bre Ryan said. "After the first couple weeks out at practice, I could believe it and knew these girls were here to play ball."

One of those is Taylor Froese, who went 3 for 4 in the regional championship game with two doubles, a triple and two RBI. Another freshman contributor is Lyla Levin, who has been dominant in the circle. Levin struck out 12 Remington batters in the title game.

The Teutons beat Sedgwick (17-1), Canton-Galva (6-1) and Remington (6-4) to punch their ticket to the state tournament. The win over Remington in the title game was bittersweet to Ryan and the team, because Remington was the lone team to sweep Inman in the regular season.

"I was kind of worried to be honest going into the game, because I didn't know what our mindset would be, knowing they had swept us earlier in the season," Ryan said. "The girls were very confident, not overly confident, but confident enough to know they could compete with Remington. That was our whole goal, was to just go and compete every single pitch and every single play, and they did that."

Ryan (formerly Beckerman) is an Inman native and took over the Teutons program in 2019. When she took over the job, she knew it was going to be a work in progress to get the team back to the state tournament.&nbsp;

The Teutons have struggled in recent years and finished just 6-14 last spring.

Ryan played on the 2007 team that finished as the class 2-1A state runner-up, falling to Wabaunsee, 2-1, in the championship game. Ryan got the start in the circle for the Teutons and remembers that May afternoon in Emporia.&nbsp;

"I'm going to preach to the girls that they need to live in the moment, take one play at a time and just chip away one play at a time," Ryan said. "You never know when that next time is or if you'll ever get back to the state tournament, so we'll all make sure to really take it all in and know that this doesn't happen every year."

The Teutons have lost three of their four games by two runs or less, so Ryan knows her team has been battle tested and hopes that will pay off come later this week.

"The girls are prepared," Ryan said. "They have been locked in all season long and ready and willing to fight. They don't back down from any challenge. They're ready to go out and do whatever it takes to get the job done."

Ryan has seen a lot of growth in her team from the 2-1 loss in the season opener at Moundridge until now.

"I'd say that our team has just completely bought in," Ryan said. "The girls all play really well together and know how each of them are going to respond to different situations. This team doesn't play like a bunch of freshmen, they're definitely mature and very knowledgeable."

Ryan feels extremely confident in her team heading into the state tournament later this week.

"I feel really good about it," Ryan said. "They are a really good group of kids that get along really well, and play really well together. They support each other and our mindset and focus right now seems like we are playing together as one team with one common goal."

🥎 Underclassmen lead Inman to state tourney for first time in 14 years

TOPEKA, Kan. — U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) State Director for Kansas Rural Development Christy Davis today announced that USDA is investing $2,383,384 in domestic fertilizer production through a cooperative in Canton, Kansas.

“The USDA is committed to Kansas agriculture and agri-business,” Davis said. “This investment will increase domestic fertilizer production and strengthen our farming communities.”

Today’s announcement is part of a larger national announcement which include 11 other states through the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP). This program provides grants to independent business owners to help them modernize equipment, adopt new technologies, build production plants and more. The details of the Kansas project are:

· A $2,382,384 grant will provide financing for construction and equipment of a new replacement facility in Canton. Mid-Kansas Cooperative Association, a farmer owned cooperative with 11,000 members and 600 employees will construct the new state of the art facility to provide more efficient access to customers in the region. The facility will support a production of 3,000 tons of liquid fertilizer annually, of which will be made available to 250 local producers. The project is expected to create eight additional positions.

MKC gets $2.3 million USDA grant for Canton facility

WICHITA, Kan. — According to a Wednesday report from the National Weather Service office in Wichita, a rapidly moving line of storms called a derecho moved out of western Kansas and into Reno and Kingman counties shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday, May 19. This intense line of storms produced widespread 70 to 90 mph winds as it raced off to the northeast at 70 to 80 mph. Hardest hit were the communities of Hutchinson, Haven, Burrton, Halstead and Newton where widespread tree damage and power outages were reported. 

Damage was also reported across southern Marion and northern Butler counties with  tornado damage was documented near Burns.  The destructive line of storms continued to produce damaging winds as it tracked toward Kansas City late Sunday night.&nbsp;

This was following the development of a high precipitation supercell that moved along the I-70 corridor earlier that afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday May 19, a high precipitation supercell developed near Hays along a warm front. This storm tracked east along I-70, producing a few brief tornadoes across Russell and northern Ellsworth county.  As it progressed east, the wind and hail threat ramped up as it moved into Saline County.  The Salina Airport measured a 100 mph wind gust.  There was also numerous reports of golf ball size hail across Salina.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Sports Arena dump site is open for your convenience from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The site will operate Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the exception of next Monday, Memorial Day, when it will be closed.

Residents are responsible for disposing of their own limbs. To accommodate everyone during this time, The City will not be enforcing debris pick up over the next two weeks. These sites are available to residents only. 

Contractors need to dispose of their debris at the landfill as normal. At this time, they are only taking tree limbs. Other household waste, mulch, wood chips, and other bulky items are not permitted.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East 3rd Avenue on the north side.

All along the Santa Fe Railway right-of-way was an abundance of eateries. The first photo shows two of them in 1928.

On the left, at 6 E. 3rd Ave., is Brownie's Lunch Room, owned by S.L. Brown of Nickerson. In 1929, it became the Joy Cafe, owned by L.L. Joy.

On the right was the Good Eats Cafe, at 8-10 E. 3rd Ave. In 1929, it became George's Cafe, owned by George Gilbert, who owned several properties on this block.

These two properties have had a long, long list of businesses since. The majority of these enterprises have been either cafes, taverns, used furniture stores, used clothing stores, antique stores and even pet supplies stores.

Fast forward 96 years to the second photo of the properties today. The 6 E. 3rd on the left was last known as Debbies Place and the property is owned by Mayfield &amp; Sons Inc.

The 8-10 E. 3rd property on the right is now the Clothestime Shop and the property is owned by Ghassan Shaban Trust.

Dillons gives discount on Memorial Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. — With Thursday scheduled as the day for the markup of the next five-year Farm Bill in the House Agriculture Committee, Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann went to the House floor to praise the initial product that he has seen thus far heading into the process.

Mr. Speaker, this is a week that farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers in my state have long-awaited. The House Agriculture Committee will finally markup a five-year Farm Bill. I want to start by saying thank you to Chairman G.T. Thompson for leading the committee in developing a bipartisan, comprehensive, fiscally conservative Farm Bill that gives our farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers the certainty they deserve.

Around this time last year, the Chairman and I hosted a Farm Bill listening session in the middle of a wheat field in my District. We heard from 150 Kansans about their priorities for a Farm Bill. They were clear—they need a Farm Bill that gives them certainty as they work day-in and day-out to feed, clothe, and fuel the world. The Farm, Food, and National Security Act does just that.

This Farm Bill strengthens the farm safety net and protects crop insurance. Agricultural producers in Kansas understand firsthand how important that is. In February 2021, Kansas had 13 consecutive days of below freezing temperatures which was a 40-year record. Our producers worked around the clock to protect their cattle and ensure they survived. Just last summer, drought and market conditions in Kansas caused producers to abandon the highest number of acres of wheat since World War One. Wheat farmers have seen a 35% decrease in production in the last year as a result. Mr. Speaker, the reality is Mother Nature is a very difficult business partner. One bad crop year could put the livelihood of our producers and their families at risk. This Farm Bill gives these hardworking individuals more certainty by strengthening the farm safety net, adjusting reference prices, and modernizing the Livestock Indemnity Program, dairy supports, and Conservation Reserve Program.

The committee’s Farm Bill also maintains American food independence and invests tax dollars in places we can see a return on those dollars. America is the freest country in the world, in part because we have never had to rely on another country to feed us. At the heart of that independence is agricultural research and innovation.

The Big First is home to some of the crown jewels of the animal health corridor—Kansas State University and the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility. These institutions give the nation a scientific hub of world renown research. Kansas State University is conducting groundbreaking research into areas, including new heat-tolerant wheat varieties and higher yielding sorghum. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s state-of-the-art National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, Kansas, will conduct research into serious animal disease threats and be an important backstop in protecting our nation’s food supply. This work, and America’s continued ability to feed ourselves for generations to come, depend on a five-year Farm Bill that prioritizes food security as national security.

Mr. Speaker, this Farm Bill makes robust investments in the Market Access Program and Foreign Market Development cooperator programs that ensure our American producers remain in the international marketplace. It proactively addresses issues like deferred maintenance costs at land-grant institutions and the country’s veterinarian shortage before the problem gets worse.

I’ve been to this floor nearly thirty times to push for my priorities in the Farm Bill—to protect and strengthen crop insurance, promote trade programs that help America remain competitive and secure, conduct rigorous oversight of the executive branch to fight big government overreach, and invest in agricultural research at America’s land-grant universities.&nbsp;I’m pleased that the Farm, Food, and National Security Act does just that.

We need to pass a five-year, fiscally conservative Farm Bill long enough to provide certainty and short enough for Congress to respond to market changes. Farm Bills feed every corner of the nation from New England to the islands of Hawaii, both our coasts, down to the Gulf, and even the heartland of the country, including Kansas.&nbsp;American agricultural producers and consumers are counting on it. The legislation we markup this week will have ripple effects for the next half-decade. This body, and Congress, must use this legislation to address the concerns we have all heard over the last several years.

When we kicked off our Farm Bill listening session last year there were three combines parked behind us – John Deere, Case, and Gleaner. When you grow up on a farm, you’re born into a loyalty to one of these trusted American brands. They have different styles and features, but they are all designed to do the same thing – harvest. Our listening session that day, and the bill the House Agriculture Committee markup this week are no different. We all have different priorities and backgrounds, but we’re all here to do the same thing – harvest, work hard, and effectively churn out a product – the Farm Bill.&nbsp;American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers deserve it, America’s food and national security depend on it, and Congress must deliver it.

This Farm Bill is something our agricultural community can be proud of. It&nbsp;puts&nbsp;dollars in places where Americans&nbsp;can see&nbsp;a good return on&nbsp;their&nbsp;investment. It tightens budgets and reins in reckless spending that doesn’t serve taxpayers. Most importantly, this&nbsp;bill ensures that American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers can continue to keep us all fed, fueled, and clothed.&nbsp;The Farm, Food, and National Security Act&nbsp;is the first step in the right direction, and I look forward to this week’s markup.

We heard from 150 Kansans about their priorities for a Farm Bill. They were clear—they need a Farm Bill that gives them certainty as they work day-in and day-out to feed, clothe, and fuel the world. The Farm, Food, and National Security Act does just that.This Farm Bill strengthens the farm safety net and protects crop insurance. Agricultural producers in Kansas understand firsthand how important that is. In February 2021, Kansas had 13 consecutive days of below freezing temperatures which was a 40-year record. Our producers worked around the clock to protect their cattle and ensure they survived. Just last summer, drought and market conditions in Kansas caused producers to abandon the highest number of acres of wheat since World War One. Wheat farmers have seen a 35% decrease in production in the last year as a result. Mr. Speaker, the reality is Mother Nature is a very difficult business partner. One bad crop year could put the livelihood of our producers and their families at risk. This Farm Bill gives these hardworking individuals more certainty by strengthening the farm safety net, adjusting reference prices, and modernizing the Livestock Indemnity Program, dairy supports, and Conservation Reserve Program.The committee’s Farm Bill also maintains American food independence and invests tax dollars in places we can see a return on those dollars. America is the freest country in the world, in part because we have never had to rely on another country to feed us. At the heart of that independence is agricultural research and innovation.The Big First is home to some of the crown jewels of the animal health corridor—Kansas State University and the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility. These institutions give the nation a scientific hub of world renown research. Kansas State University is conducting groundbreaking research into areas, including new heat-tolerant wheat varieties and higher yielding sorghum. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s state-of-the-art National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, Kansas, will conduct research into serious animal disease threats and be an important backstop in protecting our nation’s food supply. This work, and America’s continued ability to feed ourselves for generations to come, depend on a five-year Farm Bill that prioritizes food security as national security.Mr. Speaker, this Farm Bill makes robust investments in the Market Access Program and Foreign Market Development cooperator programs that ensure our American producers remain in the international marketplace. It proactively addresses issues like deferred maintenance costs at land-grant institutions and the country’s veterinarian shortage before the problem gets worse.I’ve been to this floor nearly thirty times to push for my priorities in the Farm Bill—to protect and strengthen crop insurance, promote trade programs that help America remain competitive and secure, conduct rigorous oversight of the executive branch to fight big government overreach, and invest in agricultural research at America’s land-grant universities.&nbsp;I’m pleased that the Farm, Food, and National Security Act does just that.We need to pass a five-year, fiscally conservative Farm Bill long enough to provide certainty and short enough for Congress to respond to market changes. Farm Bills feed every corner of the nation from New England to the islands of Hawaii, both our coasts, down to the Gulf, and even the heartland of the country, including Kansas.&nbsp;American agricultural producers and consumers are counting on it. The legislation we markup this week will have ripple effects for the next half-decade. This body, and Congress, must use this legislation to address the concerns we have all heard over the last several years.When we kicked off our Farm Bill listening session last year there were three combines parked behind us – John Deere, Case, and Gleaner. When you grow up on a farm, you’re born into a loyalty to one of these trusted American brands. They have different styles and features, but they are all designed to do the same thing – harvest. Our listening session that day, and the bill the House Agriculture Committee markup this week are no different. We all have different priorities and backgrounds, but we’re all here to do the same thing – harvest, work hard, and effectively churn out a product – the Farm Bill.&nbsp;American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers deserve it, America’s food and national security depend on it, and Congress must deliver it.This Farm Bill is something our agricultural community can be proud of. It&nbsp;puts&nbsp;dollars in places where Americans&nbsp;can see&nbsp;a good return on&nbsp;their&nbsp;investment. It tightens budgets and reins in reckless spending that doesn’t serve taxpayers. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kyle Fisher was introduced as the 16th head men's basketball coach in Hutchinson Community College history on Wednesday afternoon at a news conference at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

"It's incredible to be named the next men's basketball coach at Hutchinson," Fisher said. "When I walk into this place, I'm in awe, so now when I walk in here and have an office in here, pinch me, because it's so special. I take a lot of pride in the seat I get to sit in and I will work as hard as I can to maintain the proud tradition of this program."

HutchCC athletic director Josh Gooch formally introduced Fisher to the Blue Dragon fans and media seated on Sam Butterfield Court.

"The next men's basketball coach at Hutch needed to be someone that could lead," Gooch said. "Someone that could lead the program in all aspects, someone that could respect the past accomplishments of Blue Dragon basketball, while having a vision of what it needed to be moving forward. The goal will always be to hang banners, and a national championship banner at that."

Fisher said the past couple of weeks have been pretty intense.

"It's been an emotional whirlwind," Fisher said. "I knew how special Hutchinson was, but I knew what we had built and I take pride in what we had built. The opportunity to be the head coach at Hutch was tremendous, so it's been going real fast, but we take a lot of pride in the way we do things and the people we want to surround ourselves with, so it's been a lot of fun."

Fisher comes to Hutchinson after five successful seasons as the head coach at Butler Community College in El Dorado, where he led the Grizzlies to a 113-42 record, including 78-34 in the Jayhawk Conference. Fisher led the Grizzlies to 20-plus wins four times in his five-year tenure.

Although it has been a whirlwind, Fisher was thrilled when he received the call from Gooch telling him it was his gig.

"Coach Gooch and I spent two days together where it seemed like we talked all day," Fisher said. "I was in Florida on family vacation when I officially accepted the job, so we started making arrangements to come back early and get to work. It was clear to me that this opportunity was too good to pass up, and I truly think we can do some great things with this program moving forward."

The Hutchinson Sports Arena is known to many as the mecca of junior college hoops, and Fisher is excited to call it home.

"I've got a lot of great memories in here on different sidelines in this conference," Fisher said. "It certainly is a big responsibility, you know a lot of people talk about rivalries and Hutch, but the reality of it is when you're at Hutch, everyone is your rival."

Although Fisher is now officially the head coach, he knows there is still a lot of work to get done and it starts with getting his staff complete.

"The roster will take care of itself, but I want to make sure I have the right people around me," Fisher said. "If I have the right people in the room then we will be able to go find the right players that will fit our style and the way we want to play, and be able to meet our expectations as a staff and as a program."

Fisher hopes to have his coaching staff complete by later this week.

"We'll be recruiting all the way through August. The good thing is there are still a lot of really good players available, and a lot of guys that will want to come play at a place like Hutch, so we'll get all of the right pieces in place."While off the court, Fisher enjoys spending time with his wife, Kathryn, and daughters, Grace and Rose."They're everything to me," Fisher said. "The first thing I tell recruits when I meet them or they're on a visit is I'm about family and I'm about winning. The program and the players and their families are an extension of my family. We'll look out after them as if they're my own."As a player, Fisher was a four-year member of Washburn's basketball team where he played for Hall of Fame coach Bob Chipman.A native of Liberty, Missouri, Fisher graduated from Liberty High in 2003. Fisher holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Washburn University and an M.S. in Sports Administration from the University of Central Missouri.
