CHENEY, Kan. — On Monday, Shanna&nbsp;Henry announced her campaign for State Senate in Senate District 34, representing Barber County, Kingman County, and Reno County. Senate District 34 is an open seat, following the retirement of Senator Mark Steffen. 

“I decided to run for Kansas Senate because our state no longer has the healthy, vibrant economy and social structure that I benefited from when I was growing up on a McPherson County farm. I believe that to get on track, our area needs a Senator who will listen to their constituents and work to bring opportunity back to rural Kansas. I plan to do that by working to fully fund our public schools, expand access to first-rate healthcare in rural Kansas, and eliminate the bureaucratic red tape that makes it harder for families to keep food on the table.”

Shanna&nbsp;Henry is from a fourth‑generation McPherson County farm family where she learned the value of hard work at an early age. She and her husband, Tim, raised their two children at their home of 29 years in Kingman County. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, and enjoyed a successful career in the telecommunications and solar energy industries.&nbsp;Shanna&nbsp;has served on the Kingman County Extension Executive Board, and on the Kingman County Economic Development Council.

Henry added, “There are too many Kansans falling through the cracks after falling on hard times. Coming from a fourth-generation farm family, I know how hard it is for farm families to maintain a living and good mental health in times of a sustained agricultural crisis. As Senator, making life more affordable for Kansas families will be my top priority.”

Henry running as Democrat for Kansas Senate District 34

DODGE CITY, Kan. — A former Lyons teacher was part of the 2024 class for the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame inducted over the weekend.

Dolores (Dee) Orth was part of a class of nine inductees for 2024.

The Class of 2024 is the 48th class inducted into the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame. 

Over 450 teachers have been inducted thus far. Each inductee must show evidence of outstanding teaching, positive interactions with students and parents, qualities that set the teacher apart from other educators, a continued pursuit of educational opportunities throughout their career, a willingness to share ideas by conducting workshops or classes for parents and teachers, involvement in community activities, educational recognition and awards and a philosophy of education that is a positive example for others. 

Nominees must have taught in Kansas for at least 25 years. Orth has taught for 44 years.

Lyons teacher is Teachers' Hall of Fame inductee

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —The Hutchinson Municipal Band continues its 2024 Season, its 149th year of performances. Regular Tuesday concert performances are to be held from June 4, 2024, to July 9, 2024, on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. All performances of the Hutchinson Municipal Band are free of charge and open to all members of the public.

One of the oldest three bands in the state, the Hutchinson Municipal Band has consistently provided free music to the City of Hutchinson and Reno County since 1875. Even during war and pandemic, the band has offered free music to all citizens each summer for 149 years. The ensemble comprises musicians from Hutchinson, Reno County, and surrounding communities and counties.

The Concert Band, under the direction of Abby Giles (Sterling Public Schools), Alex Meek (Buhler Public Schools), Dan Brinkley (Nickerson/South Hutchinson Public Schools), and Charlene Reynolds (St. Paul’s Lutheran School), will perform each Tuesday from June 4, 2024, through July 9, 2024 at 8 p.m.

Ms. Giles will conduct the June 11, 2024, concert. Mr. Meek will conduct the June 4, 2024, and July 2, 2024 “Patriotic Concert” performances. Mr. Brinkley will conduct the concerts on June 18, 2024, and July 9, 2024. Finally, Mrs. Reynolds will conduct the June 25, 2024, concert and the July 4, 2024, “Patriot’s Parade” band.

The recently completed Hutchinson Community College Pavilion, located in the courtyard behind Lockman Hall, will serve as the new performance location this summer for regular Tuesday performances. It will replace the recent concert space used at the Hutchinson Zoo. Limited handicap parking is available next to the concert venue on a first-come, first-serve basis. The band is excited to bring the sounds of summer to Reno County residents on the Hutchinson Community College campus for the entire community to enjoy.

Since its inception, the Band has provided summer concerts every year on Tuesdays, presenting a combination of concert and jazz band performances.

The Concert Band presents band classics, marches, show tunes, movie soundtracks, and patriotic music, while the Salt City Jazz Band presents big band and jazz music. In addition, the Hutchinson Municipal Band also offers its service throughout the year with the Hutchinson Brass Quintet. Finally, the band makes regular appearances throughout the community as requested including annual participation in numerous community events, including the Patriot’s and Holiday parades.

Tickets now on sale for Kansas State Fair Demolition Derby

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An ancient fable comes to Stage 9 with auditions this week.

"Androcles and the Lion, it's a musical about 90 minutes long, and it's for the entire family," said Kris Anshutz with Stage 9. "We decided to do it because this is our 10th anniversary at 9 South Main."

"There are at least three parts, maybe four, for high school students," Anshutz said.&nbsp; "Then there is a part for somebody in their 30s, a male in their 30s, 40s, or 50s, and then another male in his 50s or 60s, and then the lion, which could be any age as long as they're physically active."&nbsp;

This version is written in the style of Italian commedia dell’arte.

"This show is about friendship and loyalty, and friendship between two, you can't say people because one of them is a lion, but between two characters who are so totally different, but they can still be friends, and they can still be loyal to each other," Anshutz said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Auditions are June 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and June 8th from 11 a.m.&nbsp; to 2 p.m. People who want to sign up for for crews can come at 1:30 p.m. on June 8 at Stage 9 at 9 South Main in Hutchinson.

Auditions for next Stage 9 production Thursday, Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday will declare a portion of a downtown property blighted, but it's a good thing, because it is required for a grant process.

According to agenda documents, in 2019, Meredith and Nick Wolenhaupt purchased the historic Montgomery Ward building at 14 North Main. They seek to address significant issues with the building's upper floor, including leaking decorative windows and code violations in electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. These problems have caused substantial damage to the original wood floor.

The Downtown Commercial Rehabilitation Program could help resolve these issues. The Wolenhaupts previously received a HEAL grant in 2023 from the Department of Commerce to address code and egress issues, enabling the use of the main floor and mezzanine spaces.

The South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD) is preparing the CDBG Downtown Rehabilitation grant application and will manage the grant if awarded.

In order to get the grant, the council needs to approve a resolution declaring the upper floor of 14 North Main as blighted due to existing code violations. This declaration is necessary for SCKEDD to apply for the Downtown Rehabilitation Community Development Block Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce. The grant will help bring the floors into code compliance for development and new use by Meredith and Nick Wolenhaupt.&nbsp;

City Council to help with grant process for downtown building

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Phil Kerpen with American Commitment believes that the Biden Administration's intent to switch the country to electric vehicles is fundamentally illegal, in addition to being currently impractical.

"If you typically, or frequently, or even occasionally, drive longer than the battery range on one of these electric vehicles, you're probably going to want an internal combustion vehicle, so you can pull into a gas station and refuel and continue on your way," Kerpen said. "This is why there's such a challenge in getting uptake beyond, you know, kind of the current seven, eight percent of sales that we've been at since last year. EV sales were growing very rapidly, which probably shouldn't be a surprise, considering we massively subsidized them, but they seem to have sort of flattened out, and I think that's because, for most people, it doesn't work as your main vehicle or certainly as your only vehicle."

It isn't clear how road maintenance would be paid for with a fully electric fleet, either.

"Some states have adopted higher registration fees for the electric vehicles to make up for the gas tax they don't pay," Kerpen said. "You know, the other issue, of course, is the electric vehicles tend to be much heavier than internal combustion vehicles because the batteries are heavy. They actually have more wear and tear on the roads than a comparable model of an internal combustion vehicle. Then, there also are other related issues with the weights being higher, like, you know, multi-level parking decks may not be able to fit as many cars from the weight rating if all of them are much heavier because they have, you know, the heavy batteries in them. There are a lot of sort of practical problems associated with what they're trying to do, not the least of which is that, you know, the mandates get way out ahead of where the market is."

According to the Biden Administration rules, for model year 2027, only 68% of all vehicles sold are allowed to be internal combustion vehicles. Right now it's over 85%.

If 85% of people want something, but only 68% of them are allowed to get it, well, we're going to have shortages. It's going to be hard to find an internal combustion vehicle, not in the far future, but in the very near future, just two years from now. And if you can find it, the price is probably going to be very high.&nbsp; Then of course, they ramp up the mandates to be much more draconian by model year 2032, only about 30% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. are going to be allowed to be internal combustion engines if the Biden rules stay in place.

There is a resolution in Congress to stop these rules, but either it has to pass, or there needs to be a change in administration to one with a philosophy that differs, or the transition to electric may happen faster than makes market sense at this point. <a href="https://www.americancommitment.org/campaign/support-cars-act-choice-in-automobile-retail-sales-act/">You can write to your representative to urge their support with a form at American Commitment</a>.

"The Hutchinson Community Blood Drive that we host with First Presbyterian Church, it will be Monday June 3 from 12 p.m. to 6 30 p.m.," said Tiffany Davison with the Red Cross. "It is also Tuesday June 4 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday June 5th 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the t-shirt is there. We also serve a meal. I believe we're still doing Sloppy Joes for this one and of course that early morning Wednesday you can grab one of those fresh cinnamon rolls if you donate then."

It's especially efficient if you can give a Power Red donation at the drive.

"We call those doubles and those donors also really like that sometimes they can give every 112 days instead of every 56 days," Davison said. "You have to be either O positive O negative or B or A negative and also have some certain height and weight requirements but yes if you're eligible for those Power Red appointments definitely get your name on those."

You can also still track your blood from when you give it to when a recipient gets it.

"If you download the blood donor app you can follow the path of your blood and it shows where it starts and processing and where it goes," Davison said.&nbsp; "That is definitely something that's very great about that blood donor app and people really enjoy that. If you just go to the App Store and you search Red Cross blood donor app it's gonna pop up it's gonna have that little red blood droplet. It's a great app to have on your phone."

Community blood drive this week

NEWTON, Kan.—&nbsp;Hillsboro Industries broke ground Friday on its new Newton manufacturing facility on East First Street.&nbsp;The Hillsboro-based truck bed and trailer manufacturer plans to build a&nbsp;56,000-square-foot facility to build aluminum livestock trailers and will create about 50 new full-time jobs in Newton.

The company bused in all its current employees from Hillsboro to participate in the groundbreaking Friday.

Lisa Kemph, Hillsboro Industries’ director of finance, said the company intends to maintain and enhance its facility in Hillsboro as it develops the Newton site. &nbsp;

Kemph said Newton’s current and planned housing development projects as well as the larger labor pool were key factors in choosing Newton as the site for their second facility.

The new facility is expected to cost about $8.1 million to construct, with $2.8 million in furnishings and equipment.&nbsp;

The site is located on East First Street immediately east of Prairie View, west of Hillside.

The development agreement calls for the City and County each to contribute up to $125,000 for street improvements on First Street, including a turn lane and aprons to improve site access. It also includes the City’s good faith intention to grant a 10-year, 100% property tax abatement and to facilitate the issuance of Industrial Revenue Bonds (IRBs), including a sales tax exemption for construction materials and equipment. &nbsp;

SALINA - Hollywood’s best directors and producers nearly couldn’t have written a better script for Kansas’ high school baseball’s version of Hoosiers or Little Giants.

“We showed that no matter what seed you are, you can beat any team that stands in front of you,” Salina Central senior Brody Farthing said.

Central’s Mustangs entered Class 5A regionals two weeks ago with a 7-18 record and the 16th seed in 5A’s West bracket.&nbsp;

They had the indubitable distinction of facing #1 seed Maize South in the first round of regional play. Few, if any, gave Central a chance to win.&nbsp;

Except those clad in the Mustang Maroon uniforms.

“After finally qualifying to be in the playoffs and being ranked 16th in the west, I think the players relaxed and played that way,” coach Dee Kolzow said. “We talked from day one if we could put everything together we could play with anyone. When we went to regionals we started out really well against Maize South who was ranked number 1 in the west. I think those first two innings gave us the confidence we needed.”

The Mustangs, behind solid pitching and a pitcher’s best friend of sound defense and timely hitting, went on to upset Maize South 12-8.

“Definitely the win against Maize South. The confidence for the team was pretty low, but our pitchers executed and we batted good and from then on we thought we could beat anyone and that momentum carried on into state,” sophomore Grayton Gross said.

“Once we won against them it gave us a new confidence going into the regional final versus Hutch,” senior Gunnar Gross said. “They (Hutch) threw a pitcher against us that had shut us out earlier in the season, but we were able to get a couple hits and get some runs and win 3-2.”

Farthing pitched a complete game for the Mustangs in their revenge game against Hutchinson.&nbsp;

“My fastball was working really good that game with also my slider working really good when I was ahead in the count,” Farthing said.

Grayton Gross went yard for Central against Hutch.&nbsp;

“I was seeing the ball well that day and he gave me a good pitch to hit,” he said. “I ended up catching all of it and it went over.”

Central’s next test came against the state tournament’s #1 seed, 22-5 Bishop Carroll.

“Going into the state tournament with a 9-18 record, we knew that we had nothing to lose,” sophomore Keaton Smith said. “Not only did we play for each other, we played for coach Kolzow knowing that this was his last ride.”

“Our players went in with confidence, got good pitching, really solid defense and timely hitting,” Kolzow said of the 7-2 victory that propelled the Mustangs to the state semifinals.&nbsp;

“We all knew we were the underdogs going into this weekend and nobody was expecting us to win,” sophomore Chance Hogan said. “We were riding on our momentum and had all the confidence in each other.”

Central lost to Spring Hill to set up a rematch against rival Salina South for third place.

“After losing our energy was down. But when we found out we would get a chance to play Salina South who had swept us earlier in the season it brought the energy and focus right back to our team,” Gunnar Gross said. “We were able to go out and shut them out to beat them with Chance Hogan on the mound, who did not start a single game at pitcher all year.”

The Mustangs played clean baseball and didn't make errors, Gunnar noted.&nbsp;

“Seth Rogers had an amazing diving play on a pop up in-between first base and right field that saved the shutout and helped us close the deal to win 2-0 against them,” Gunnar continued. “It was a great moment to be able to beat them and finish on top of them in the rankings after hearing trash talk from their side of town for the past month.”

“I’d say what we accomplished was what I knew our team was cabable of from the start,” Grayton Gross said. “We had tons of talent, but we didn’t play great to start off the season as a team. At the end of the season we started playing as a team.”

“It was one for the books and we came together as a team to put together a few upsets,” junior Jack Gordon said.

On April 12 after losing 12-0 to Andover Central, the Mustangs were 1-8 and losers of eight straight. But they never gave up hope in each other.

“At the beginning of the season things weren't going our way, but once it came to regionals we all came together,” Smith said. “After beating Maize South we realized what we were capable of and that changed our mentality as a team. Although we came up short we now know what we are capable of. With a young team we have a lot of potential and look forward to continuing our success next season.”

A bulk of their roster returns with just three seniors in Gross, Farthing and Kyler Brecheisen.

“Gunnar had a great year and is just a leader,” Kolzow said of Gross, who broke his ankle in the football season opener in several places that required surgery. “I was surprised after his football injury to even have him back and to play the way he did both on offense and defense was remarkable. He was so valuable to the team not only hitting around .400 all year but also the way he handled pitchers.”

“As soon as I knew that I wouldn't be able to be back for any of the football season, my focus immediately shifted to being back and ready for baseball,” Gross said. “The timeline the doctors gave me said that I wouldn't be able to run/jog until the end of February (start of baseball season), but when my doctor saw how my recovery was going at the post-surgery exams he cleared me to start running and doing everything six weeks ahead of schedule. I was able to be back for the whole baseball season and did not miss a game.”

“He is just a tough kid that spent many hours working to be able to get back for baseball,” Kolzow, who announced after the regular season he was retiring as coach, said. “I know it (ankle) bothered him early especially running the bases making the turns but never would say anything. We didn’t let him run too often.”

Gross attended a tryout this past week at a football camp at Kansas State.&nbsp;

“I wasn't able to play more than seven snaps before getting hurt this year,” the Central quarterback said. “I am trying out at quarterback but I would be open to any position change. I hope to earn a spot by showing out at the camp, but if I do not then I will attend K-State as just a student in the fall.”

⚾ Recap of Salina Central magical end of season

NEWTON, Kan. — According to a Friday update from the City of Newton, debris removal from the May 19 storm continued this week, with City crews moving to Maintenance Area 3 on Thursday afternoon. The contractor, Alfred’s Superior Tree Service, is still working through Area 1. The City and Alfred's both plan to have crews working Saturday.&nbsp;

So far, City crews have collected 8,114 cubic feet of debris, and Alfred's has collected 2,548 cubic yards.&nbsp;The debris pile near Centennial Park is growing, and once conditions are right, City staff will begin burning as allowed per our state burn permit. Most trees downed from the cemetery were turned into mulch by Park staff since they were cedar trees.&nbsp; All other trees from around the city are either at or bound for the burn pile.

Staff is planning to do a second pass through Areas 1 and 2 (the worst hit) after the first round of collection is complete. Since Areas 3-7 have had longer to get debris to the curb, a second pass may not be necessary in these areas. Also, City staff need to get cleanup completed so regular seasonal maintenance can begin on streets.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The winner of Hutchinson Salvation Army's donut day fundraiser ate not only a dozen but 15 donuts. The fundraiser raised a grand total of $4,600.46.

"It was exciting," Major Paul James said. "We had some last minute competitors that showed up. They signed up last night but I was focused on all the other details. But yeah it was an exciting time and then last minute guy ate 15 donuts."&nbsp;

Adam Keller, director of bands for Smoky Valley USD 400 in Lindsborg won the award for most donuts eaten. Major James won the people's choice award and Kathy Ireland of Prairie Star won the raising the most dough award at the event.

The money raised at the contest helps send kids to the Salvation Army's regional camp outside of Kansas City.&nbsp;

"It's a great opportunity that we can one, raise money for kids going to camp, raise awareness of just the continued need throughout the summer of helping families, because really it's ultimately giving kids a great opportunity," James said. "It's helping the parents, because you can't feed a child for $10 in a day, let alone for a whole week. That's part of our mission is to help families and children just in those different ways."&nbsp;

 </figure>EMMIE BOESE&nbsp; Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — The winner of Hutchinson Salvation Army's donut day fundraiser ate not only a dozen but 15 donuts. The fundraiser raised a grand total of $4,600.46."It was exciting," Major Paul James said. "We had some last minute competitors that showed up. They signed up last night but I was focused on all the other details. But yeah it was an exciting time and then last minute guy ate 15 donuts."&nbsp;Adam Keller, director of bands for Smoky Valley USD 400 in Lindsborg won the award for most donuts eaten. "It's helping the parents, because you can't feed a child for $10 in a day, let alone for a whole week.
