NEWTON, Kan. — According to a Friday update from the City of Newton, debris removal from the May 19 storm continued this week, with City crews moving to Maintenance Area 3 on Thursday afternoon. The contractor, Alfred’s Superior Tree Service, is still working through Area 1. The City and Alfred's both plan to have crews working Saturday.

So far, City crews have collected 8,114 cubic feet of debris, and Alfred's has collected 2,548 cubic yards. The debris pile near Centennial Park is growing, and once conditions are right, City staff will begin burning as allowed per our state burn permit. Most trees downed from the cemetery were turned into mulch by Park staff since they were cedar trees.  All other trees from around the city are either at or bound for the burn pile.

Staff is planning to do a second pass through Areas 1 and 2 (the worst hit) after the first round of collection is complete. Since Areas 3-7 have had longer to get debris to the curb, a second pass may not be necessary in these areas. Also, City staff need to get cleanup completed so regular seasonal maintenance can begin on streets.
