HUTCHINSON, Kan. —  It was World Otter Day on Wednesday, May 29 and the Hutchinson Zoo took time to celebrate the occasion.

"We wanted to make sure to kind of celebrate all of our awesome otters," Education Coordinator Sierra Wood said. "They are just a really cool native species."

The Hutchinson Zoo has three otters for folks to come see. Two of the zoo's otters are a breeding pair through the species survival plan through AZA.

The breeding mates had a chance to do a training demonstration for the public. A live feeding demonstration took place as well where zoo staff placed fish in the water. The otters had the opportunity to show how fast they can swim.

"Otters, if they are sprinting in the water, they can actually be even faster than Michael Phelps in his prime," Wood said. "They can be quick."
