HEELO Inc. Juneteenth events start Saturday

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Corporation Commission will hold a public hearing in Wichita on Monday, June 17 to give Kansas Gas Service customers an opportunity to learn more about the company’s rate increase request, ask questions and make comments before the Commission.

The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. at Lowe Auditorium at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex, 5014 E. 29th&nbsp;St. North. This is the second of two public hearings planned. The first hearing on the proposed rate increase was held in Topeka on Thursday.

For those unable to attend in person, a virtual option through Zoom is available to allow remote participants to comment and ask questions. On March 1, 2024, Kansas Gas Service filed an application with the Commission requesting a net increase in base rates of $58.1 million. The requested increase would affect the portions of a customer’s bill that relate to the delivery of natural gas by KGS, including the fixed monthly service charge and delivery charge. If approved, the average monthly residential bill will increase by approximately $6.71 (10.41%) for customers who use less natural gas (73 Mcf or less per year) and $9.48 (8.25%) for those that use more natural gas (more than 73 Mcf per year).

Kansas Gas Service provides natural gas service to approximately 648,000 homes and businesses in 360 communities in Kansas.

The Commission will issue an order on the application on or before October 25, 2024.

Final weekend of fan drive

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With heat reaching the triple digits this week, it's important to do what is necessary to keep your pet cool, according to Erica Miller, DVM, with Apple Lane Animal Hospital.

&nbsp;"A lot of times what we talk about is everyone's always like, oh, you know, I normally walk my dog when I get off work or over my lunch hour, the hottest part of the day, right?," Miller said. "Now exercising your pet, think about first thing in the morning, late, kind of later in the evening, you know, last night probably around 7:30 or so, it's starting to kind of cool down, the sun's going down, so not quite as bad."

The reason to wait is to avoid injuries to their feet.

"It's hot, so if you can't walk around without socks and shoes on, you know, think about your pet too," Miller said. "We see a lot of burns on the paw pads because the cement's hot and they don't have any way to tell us and all they can think about is they're so excited to go on a walk and exercise with you, and so that's something else to think about as well."

There's no interventional treatment that can speed recovery much once those burns have happened.

"It's time," Miller said. "A lot of times we'll kind of do some like salve, some ointment on the pads and sometimes if they're bad enough we have to wrap them, which how many dogs like to have their paws wrapped and how many owners like to keep the wraps on the paws and that normally means we have a cone of shame on."

Just keep those pads clean and dry if you do have burns, and contact your veterinarian.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — With heat reaching the triple digits this week, it's important to do what is necessary to keep your pet cool, according to Erica Miller, DVM, with Apple Lane Animal Hospital.&nbsp;"A lot of times what we talk about is everyone's always like, oh, you know, I normally walk my dog when I get off work or over my lunch hour, the hottest part of the day, right?," Miller said. "Now exercising your pet, think about first thing in the morning, late, kind of later in the evening, you know, last night probably around 7:30 or so, it's starting to kind of cool down, the sun's going down, so not quite as bad."The reason to wait is to avoid injuries to their feet."It's hot, so if you can't walk around without socks and shoes on, you know, think about your pet too," Miller said. "We see a lot of burns on the paw pads because the cement's hot and they don't have any way to tell us and all they can think about is they're so excited to go on a walk and exercise with you, and so that's something else to think about as well."There's no interventional treatment that can speed recovery much once those burns have happened."It's time," Miller said. Vet: Walk dogs in cooler parts of day

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A recently finished mural appeared on Avenue A and Lorraine in Hutchinson last week. &nbsp;

"I think I did it like at the perfect place, perfect time type of thing," Scott said. "Like I was painting and there was literally like thunderstorms behind me painting a thunderstorm which was kind of cool."

According to his website, Brady Scott is a multi-faceted artist based out of the Midwest. Several of his murals are found across town on the side of businesses, the Hutchinson Zoo and in the basement of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp;

His most recent mural at Avenue A and Lorraine is on the building of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fk46cI-Vpxc&amp;t=96s">Hardcore Fab</a>&nbsp;shop,&nbsp;owned by Anthony and&nbsp; Julie Brawner. Scott knows the Brawners from working together with Anthony on airbrush jobs for hot rod restorations and different projects.&nbsp;

"We kind of shot back and forth different ideas and you know it had been and it still is kind of storm season in Kansas with the lightning and the tornadoes and all that stuff," Scott said. "Yeah, I was kind of looking for a chance to do that type of mural and that kind of imagery and it seemed like the perfect spot."

Scott said the Brawners’ bought the building for Hardcore Fab a few years ago and have been restoring what used to be an old mill.&nbsp;

"They have been doing that inside there, at Hardcore Fab for two years but nobody can tell," Scott said. "The outside looked exactly the same so they wanted to do something to make a difference."&nbsp;

Scott has been painting and drawing for many years. He worked at Luminous Neon Art and Sign Systems in Hutchinson for 14 years.&nbsp; His first mural in town came in 2014 on Avenue D and Main St.&nbsp;

He was raised on a ranch in Arizona and Kansas. Scott said he draws inspiration for his murals through close encounters with nature. &nbsp;

"That's one thing I love about Kansas is all of the wildlife and you can drive 10 minutes in any direction in Hutchinson and you are seeing the prairie and all the birds and the flora and the fauna and I like to bring that into an urban environment and again I think that reminds you that, whoa, we are alive and we are a part of this ecosystem," Scott said. "Any chance that I get to kind of infuse my murals with that, I really go for that."

He has also painted murals in Wichita, Salina, Oklahoma City and other locations as well.&nbsp;

“Sometimes seeing a painting can really wake you up and hey, whoa, I'm a part of this life,” Scott said. “I'm alive and it's not just about your bills and your Facebook messages. You know, all that junk that we have in modern life and hopefully, you know, you get a new tattoo, you feel that everyday. You see it.&nbsp; You drive by a cool mural on your way to work and hopefully that can do that."&nbsp; Scott is also a full time tattoo artist at Redemption Ink Tattoo located at 323 N. Main in downtown Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Local artist brings thunder and lightning to mural 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shana Smith, constituent events manager for the Alzheimer's Association-Central and Western Kansas Chapter said that June is an important month, as it is&nbsp;Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month.

"Take care of your brain health," Smith said. "Whatever your stage of life, there's so many ways that we can take charge of a healthy brain. For the lifetime risk of Alzheimer's at the age of 45, one in five women are at risk and one in 10 for men. Currently there's no cure for Alzheimer's, but we know more now about brain health, risk reduction, and ways to live well with the disease."

Adopting healthy habits will reduce the risk of dementia.

"It's just, we need to take better care of ourselves, Controlling our blood pressure, sleeping well, being smoke-free, staying in school, and protecting your head with a helmet for activities like biking," Smith said.&nbsp; "All of these can be found on our website at <a href="https://www.alz.org/help-support/brain_health/10-healthy-habits-for-your-brain">alz.org/healthyhabits</a>."

Early detection is more important than ever.

"Only half of those with Alzheimer's disease are ever even diagnosed, which delays the care and potentially putting them at more risk," Smith said. "Any early detection of Alzheimer's or other dementia offers more benefits for the person diagnosed and their loved ones, including access to treatment and the ability to plan for the future."

June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Rotary Club of Hutchinson speaker for their Monday meeting is David Foster of the Hutchinson YMCA. The meeting is Monday, June 17 at noon at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the campus of Hutchinson Community College.

David&nbsp;Foster&nbsp;is in his 27th year as an employee of the YMCA.&nbsp;&nbsp;He began his YMCA career with the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City in 1997 and has had the opportunity to serve in a variety of leadership positions at YMCAs in Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas, and Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;He has been the branch director of the Hutchinson YMCA since May 10, 2022. 

David&nbsp;is involved in his local community having served in local Rotary Clubs, Chamber of Commerce Boards, and various other leadership capacities, and is currently a member of the Hutchinson Rotary Club. In addition, he has spoken at national YMCA conferences on a variety of topics including board/volunteer development and community partnerships.&nbsp;

David&nbsp;is a graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma and completed course work toward a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration at Oklahoma State University.&nbsp;&nbsp;He is married to Ali and they have a 15-year-old daughter, Audrey, who attends Hutchinson High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;

YMCA head to speak at Rotary Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department will be conducting rural water operations at Dillon Nature Center on Friday, June 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The front entrance will be blocked off during that timeframe. Access can be gained through the exit drive on the east side of DNC. 

The Hutchinson Fire Department would like to thank Hutch Rec for letting us conduct this training at the location.  This opportunity gives our women and men realistic training on how to deliver water in the rural community.

This is day 3 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Kansas wheat farmers are relieved to have a crop to harvest this year, remaining optimistic and pleasantly surprised with the good-yielding, good-quality crop, even as harvest progresses into areas where fields were impacted by an inconsistent mix of&nbsp;freeze damage, stripe rust pressure, rain and hail.&nbsp;

Harvest delivery is in full swing at Ardent Mills, which unloaded 150 trucks at its facility in Newton on Tuesday, June 11. Harvest is roughly 10 percent complete and Pam Bowles, assistant administrative manager, expects another week of peak harvest.&nbsp;

Farmers delivering wheat to the mill are reporting yields ranging from 40 bushels per acre up to 70 bushels per acre. At the mill, test weights are steady around 62 pounds per bushel and the protein average is 11.3 percent.&nbsp;

“Everyone seems to be in a good mood,” Bowles said. “We are planning for an above-average year this year.”&nbsp;

Troy Smith, who farms near Walton in Harvey County, is also pleasantly surprised with this year’s harvest, having started cutting his KS Zenda earlier this week — on track with normal pace. He attributes using cow manure as his primary fertilizer and heavy moisture over Thanksgiving weekend as keys to this year’s success.

“What made this year so good was the snow that came during the Iowa State/K-State football game, honestly!” he said.&nbsp;

His average yield is 67 bushels per acre with average test weight of 60.8 pounds per bushel and average protein at 13.13 percent.&nbsp;

Also in Harvey County, James Mosiman described this year’s harvest as a “night and day difference” compared to last year, speaking volumes about what good weather, sound farming practices and resilient varieties can produce when everything comes together.&nbsp;

The Mosiman family started harvesting on Thursday, June 6, about a week ahead of schedule. Beyond a delay from an inch of rain over last weekend, they have not encountered many challenges this year. He reported seeing small amounts of stripe rust, a common obstacle for many farmers this year.&nbsp;

Mosiman happily mentioned fields are yielding a promising 60 bushels per acre. Reflecting on the culmination of months of hard work, he summed this year’s harvest up by saying, “It’s just nice to cut a crop.”&nbsp;

In neighboring Reno County, Brandon Frederick is helping his grandfather VJ Blubaugh harvest wheat near Burrton. Storms the week before Memorial Day weekend blew over pivots on their irrigated wheat. On Thursday, June 13, they were cutting in a pocket where one side of the road got an inch of rain, but the other side had nothing more than sprinkle.&nbsp;

The operation grazes a lot of their wheat, which is in crop rotation with sudan. This year, they put out 105 head on the ground for 120 days, ending the grazing season with an average daily gain of 3.0 pounds.&nbsp;

Both grandfather and grandson are thrilled to harvest a crop this year, after having to swath the entirety of their wheat crop last year. Fields planted to WestBred varieties are yielding between 40 and 70 bushels per acre, with test weights of 61-62 pounds per bushel and proteins ranging from 12 to 12.3 percent.&nbsp;

“As much as I love having food for my cows, I love seeing a cash crop come up and go all the way to harvest,” Frederick said.&nbsp;

The harvest crew was hustling to repair combines and keep cutting ahead of forecasted thunderstorms in Barton County, according to Dean Stoskopf, who farms near Hoisington. His first two fields — both planted to PlainsGold Whistler — had yields of 45 and 50 bushels per acre. Moisture is between 11.5 and 14.5 percent with test weights ranging from 59.5 to 61.5 pounds per bushel and protein hitting 11.5 to 14 percent.&nbsp;

Yields are better than expected, but Stoskopf noted he is cutting some of his best fields first and expects yields to go down as harvest progresses. Within fields, he remarked that prolonged drought conditions and freeze damage caused a lot of inconsistency with stands, noting he feels like he’s cutting 60-bushel wheat or five-bushel wheat with nothing in between. Still, he feels optimistic after consecutive years of near-total crop failures and expects to be done cutting within two weeks — hopefully just in time to watch the grandkids show at the county fair the last week of June.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest is roughly 10 percent complete and Pam Bowles, assistant administrative manager, expects another week of peak harvest.&nbsp;Farmers delivering wheat to the mill are reporting yields ranging from 40 bushels per acre up to 70 bushels per acre. At the mill, test weights are steady around 62 pounds per bushel and the protein average is 11.3 percent.&nbsp;“Everyone seems to be in a good mood,” Bowles said. “We are planning for an above-average year this year.”&nbsp;Troy Smith, who farms near Walton in Harvey County, is also pleasantly surprised with this year’s harvest, having started cutting his KS Zenda earlier this week — on track with normal pace. He attributes using cow manure as his primary fertilizer and heavy moisture over Thanksgiving weekend as keys to this year’s success.“What made this year so good was the snow that came during the Iowa State/K-State football game, honestly!” he said.&nbsp;His average yield is 67 bushels per acre with average test weight of 60.8 pounds per bushel and average protein at 13.13 percent.&nbsp;Also in Harvey County, James Mosiman described this year’s harvest as a “night and day difference” compared to last year, speaking volumes about what good weather, sound farming practices and resilient varieties can produce when everything comes together.&nbsp;The Mosiman family started harvesting on Thursday, June 6, about a week ahead of schedule. Beyond a delay from an inch of rain over last weekend, they have not encountered many challenges this year. He reported seeing small amounts of stripe rust, a common obstacle for many farmers this year.&nbsp;Mosiman happily mentioned fields are yielding a promising 60 bushels per acre. Reflecting on the culmination of months of hard work, he summed this year’s harvest up by saying, “It’s just nice to cut a crop.”&nbsp;In neighboring Reno County, Brandon Frederick is helping his grandfather VJ Blubaugh harvest wheat near Burrton. Storms the week before Memorial Day weekend blew over pivots on their irrigated wheat. On Thursday, June 13, they were cutting in a pocket where one side of the road got an inch of rain, but the other side had nothing more than sprinkle.&nbsp;The operation grazes a lot of their wheat, which is in crop rotation with sudan. This year, they put out 105 head on the ground for 120 days, ending the grazing season with an average daily gain of 3.0 pounds.&nbsp;Both grandfather and grandson are thrilled to harvest a crop this year, after having to swath the entirety of their wheat crop last year. Fields planted to WestBred varieties are yielding between 40 and 70 bushels per acre, with test weights of 61-62 pounds per bushel and proteins ranging from 12 to 12.3 percent.&nbsp;“As much as I love having food for my cows, I love seeing a cash crop come up and go all the way to harvest,” Frederick said.&nbsp;The harvest crew was hustling to repair combines and keep cutting ahead of forecasted thunderstorms in Barton County, according to Dean Stoskopf, who farms near Hoisington. His first two fields — both planted to PlainsGold Whistler — had yields of 45 and 50 bushels per acre. Moisture is between 11.5 and 14.5 percent with test weights ranging from 59.5 to 61.5 pounds per bushel and protein hitting 11.5 to 14 percent.&nbsp;Yields are better than expected, but Stoskopf noted he is cutting some of his best fields first and expects yields to go down as harvest progresses. Within fields, he remarked that prolonged drought conditions and freeze damage caused a lot of inconsistency with stands, noting he feels like he’s cutting 60-bushel wheat or five-bushel wheat with nothing in between. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The limb and brush drop sites will be closing permanently effective Friday, June 14th. Residents are encouraged to utilize the Reno County Landfill for limb and brush disposal from this date onward.&nbsp;

In just ten days, the Public Works Department cleared 5,837 cubic yards of storm debris, equivalent to 449 dump truck loads, from our community. This significant effort saw the following daily contributions:&nbsp;

The Inspections Department will resume code enforcement for storm debris violations starting on July 1. Property owners must clear any remaining storm debris to comply with the Municipal code, ensuring public safety and community cleanliness. Non-compliance may result in fines. For more information, contact the Building and Neighborhood Services Department at 620.694.2630.&nbsp;

We appreciate your cooperation and urge residents to promptly use the Reno County Landfill for disposal needs.&nbsp;

Limb and brush drop sites to close Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Zoo's Wildlife Rehabilitation Program at Cargill WildCare Center has reached maximum capacity in enclosures and neonatal care space and will temporarily close to new wildlife patient admissions. 

The Zoo will alert the community when patient intake resumes.

The Center usually has the highest number of wildlife admitted in the summer due to the influx of migratory birds and young orphaned animals. Already this spring, facility staff have taken in over 350 patients. Typically, staff and volunteers care for 760 patients a year. 

As a state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility, the hard-working staff and volunteers involved in this program are legally and ethically responsible for maintaining a humane standard of care, and they aren't able to do that if intakes continue beyond capacity.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation program is supported by the City of Hutchinson and community volunteers. To protect the Zoo's animal collection, the facility is separate from the rest of the Zoo's animals.

As our community becomes larger, human-wildlife contact and conflict increases and the demand for rehabilitation rises. Unfortunately, the limiting resources for the Wildlife Rehabilitation program are facility space and personnel. Once the program can release current patients, intakes will resume.

Zoo Wildlife Rehabilitation Program is full

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;According to Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas, drivers are getting a little relief at the pumps.

"We have been seeing sort of an unexpected lowering of gas prices over the last few weeks, not only here in Kansas, but nationally," Steward said. "Kansas average gas price is $3.02 a gallon. That's down $0.04 in the past week and down $0.14 from a month ago.&nbsp;If we look back to where we were this time last year, we were at $3.25 a gallon. So, pretty significant drops in prices. Right now, we're $0.44 less than the national average, which is $3.46 a gallon, and that puts us sixth cheapest in the nation."

The fundamentals behind gas prices are looking good right now, too.

"It's an interesting trend right now," Steward said. "The supply of gasoline in our stocks is very high right now. There's typically no refinery maintenance this time of year, so our production capacity is at a very high level. Couple that with crude oil prices stabilizing and falling over the past month or so, we're now at $77 or $78 a barrel, whereas back in April, we were in the mid to upper 80s per barrel."

If the trend continues, there are opportunities to get even lower.

"We're flirting with that $3 a gallon threshold and possibly getting under that at some point," Steward said. "There are currently 18 counties in Kansas under $3 a gallon, including McPherson County, Reno County, and Harvey County here nearby."

With the first potential tropical system coming into the Atlantic soon, the hope is that it will not have a negative effect on refinery capacity.

AAA: Prices at the pump headed down

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson police took a man into custody Wednesday evening on assault and illegal discharge of a weapon charges.

According to Captain Dustin Loepp, at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, officers of the Hutchinson Police Department were dispatched to 316 N Cleveland in reference to a report of gunshots being fired in the front yard of the residence. 

When officers arrived, they determined that there had been a disturbance at the residence involving the resident 24-year-old Micah Boham and a male neighbor that lived nearby. 

It was reported that the neighbor was asked to leave but refused and Boham then obtained a loaded handgun and fired one shot in the direction of the neighbor.&nbsp;

Boham was booked on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and&nbsp;illegal discharge of a weapon charges.

HESSTON, Kan. — AGCO announced in a meeting on Wednesday that they are moving the Small Square Baler, Windrower Header, and Round Baler Lines to Mexico. 

It is currently unknown what will happen to the employees of the line, but the company does not expect layoffs.

“To simplify and streamline operations at AGCO’s Hesston, Kansas, facility, the company is shifting some production to another AGCO plant. Hesston will continue to manufacture Massey Ferguson windrowers, large square balers, combines and combine headers using the more than $28 million in investments made in the Kansas facility since 2021. Those investments have focused on updating and modernizing Hesston’s systems and equipment. Production of small square balers, round balers and rotary mowers will move to its Querétaro, Mexico, facility beginning in 2025. By streamlining the Hesston portfolio, our goal is to secure a profitable future for the plant. AGCO expects the impact of this change on the overall workforce in Hesston to be accomplished through typical attrition.“

AGCO moving some lines to Mexico

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of Avenue F and South Main.

The Industrial Petroleum Company was an early player in the gasoline filling station business. They had two locations in Hutch.

In 1927, they built a location at 527 S. Main, right next to the Frank McDermed Grocery and Coal store. The first photo shows that at opening.

By 1935, the station had been sold off to the up-and-coming Derby Oil Co.

In the 1940s, it was privately owned by Raymond Myers.

In the late 1940s, McDermed's building was razed to make way for the expanding Winchester Packing Co.

By 1955, Winchester had taken up most of the block but the filling station was still there, owned by Herrington and Son. The second photo shows the Winchester Fleet in 1955, with the filling station still showing on the far right.

The filling station was there until 1969 and now is the loading dock area. The third photo shows the corner today, now owned by Tyson Prepared Foods Inc. out of Springdale, Arkansas.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Industrial Petroleum Co. - Vol. 74

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Division Chief Jeremy Unruh will be part of an event next month to help make the Kansas State Fair safer for everyone.

"A lot of people don't understand what goes into preparing for the fair and what Hutch Fire and Hutch Police and approximately 10 other departments do is, we meet multiple times throughout the year leading up to the fair," Unruh said. "We discuss safety concerns all the way up to the events, but this year, what we had was something different."

An expert from the Department of Homeland Security was at the 2023 Fair. He's bringing back some suggestions.

"He's picked out some weaknesses that he saw, and coming up here in July, we are having a six-hour tabletop. The first three hours of it will be discussing how we approach an MCI incident from how we respond all the way up to the aftermath dealing with the community. In the afternoon will be another three-hour session over cybersecurity. And then that's the same thing as how do we fix the problem all the way up to how do we deal with the community after the fact."

A mass casualty incident (MCI) is defined by the National Library of Medicine as an event that overwhelms the local healthcare system, where the number of casualties vastly exceeds the local resources and capabilities in a short time.

The Hutchinson Fire Department's new Station 1 is at 23rd and Main and on land owned by the Kansas State Fair and leased to the city.

Agencies preparing for events at Fair

STERLING, Kan. — “Forever Plaid” celebrates the magic of music in Sterling this upcoming weekend at the Sterling High School Betsy Dutton Theater June 14, 15 and 16th.

“Nothing on this planet compares to the feeling of being inside a good tight chord. We hold on to that last note - a perfect chord - one perfect moment! That’s all anyone has the right to ask for.” Those are the words of Frankie, the lead singer in the singing quartet known as “The Plaids.”

That sentiment is shared by the four actual cast members playing “The Plaids” in the musical Forever Plaid which is being presented by the Sterling Community Theatre Troupe on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, June 16 at 2:00 p.m. in Sterling. 

The show celebrates the music and friendship along with moments of perfection and magic, particularly the experience of being in sync with others to create a perfect chord. 

Forever Plaid is the story of four high schoolers who formed their own singing group and were preparing to really “hit it big” when they were killed in a car crash before ever having the chance. This show is their return to earth to get their one chance at their “big break.”

The musical makes a feast of the lush harmonies of “golden oldies” with songs such as "Three Coins in the Fountain," "Moments to Remember," "Sixteen Tons," "Chain Gang," "Heart and Soul," "Lady of Spain," "Shangri-La," "Rags to Riches," and of course, "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing."

The Sterling quartet in “Plaid” already have the chemistry of four buddies down because they are. Luke Harding, Caleb Brownlee, Noah Svaty – all are Sterling High School alumni. The fourth is Robbie Stansbury, from Lyons High School. All four have been close friends through their experiences in music and theatre at Sterling College. 

They started singing Barbershop music on their own over a year ago and discovered Forever Plaid about the same time. Harding said, “We all absolutely love harmonies. When I found out there was an entire show centered around a singing male quartet, I knew we needed to do it.”

Brownlee said, “The tight knit four person chords that grow and shrink and the precise choreography and comedy make this show uniquely enjoyable. Plus, all our voices blend well together, and our shared bond is beyond acting. That connection will come through on stage.”

Svaty adds, “There’s just something magical about singing these tight harmonies with this group of guys. We try to savor every moment. It’s something we will all remember fondly, and we hope our audiences will, too.”

“This is definitely their show,” said Dennis Dutton, Director of the Sterling Community Theatre Troupe. “They came to me last fall and asked about doing it through the Troupe. They are taking the leadership. They have divided roles. Luke is music director and is doing the blocking (stage movement), Noah is handling the choreography and the set/lighting design, Caleb is handling props and Robbie publicity. They love the music, they love the show, they love performing together. This will be a great production for everyone who sees it, I’m sure.”

The show emphasizes music and comedy. Brownlee said, “There is a lot of humor in the show but also lots of growth between characters. Packing 20 songs into 90 minutes makes sure that there are no moments that are barren. Younger generations, such as us, will enjoy this show for the personality of the characters and the precision of song and movement.”

“With the names of the characters making up ‘The Plaids’ - Frankie, Smudge, Jinx, and Sparky you can tell this is an incredibly sweet, slightly nerdy group of guys,” Dutton said.&nbsp; “Though most of the tunes are about love, in that innocent pre-rock 'n' roll way and is light-hearted, there are some songs that are deeper than others. Then they turn around and use plumbers helpers in place of microphones since they were used to rehearsing it in the back of Smudge’s family hardware store."

Stansbury said, “This show has established a camaraderie that I have not experienced in other shows. There are only four guys on stage, and each actor must work to enhance the quartet's sound and appearance - for the quartet's sake, not their own. It is much more of a team effort than a personal one. A Plaid takes care of his fellow Plaid!”

The foursome is making plans to take the show “on the road” – all the way to Alaska. Harding said, “I was born in Alaska, and I go back to my hometown of Cordova every summer. I've brought all three of these guys to Cordova at some point, and they all loved it. We wanted an excuse to get back there, all together. Plus, they don't get a lot of things like this in Cordova, but the town loves the arts. So, I think it will be something we really can bless the city with. We’re all super excited to take it to that community.”

Tickets for the Sterling production of Forever Plaid are $15.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and will be available at the door before each performance June 14, 15, and 16.

Forever Plaid opens this weekend in Sterling

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Professional rider Louie Cortese will be at the new Bike Park in Hutchinson at Carey Park at 1600 South Elm on Saturday, June 15 giving demos at 11 a.m. 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Riders will be able to do a meet and greet with Louie. He'll be available for autographs and photo opportunities throughout the event.

Also, the Hutchinson youth mountain bike team, the Disciples of Dirt, will be hosting a fundraiser to support their program. Swing by their booth to grab refreshing drinks, delicious hotdogs, and snacks.

Music will be provided by B. Epic Events. Snow cones will be available from&nbsp;Salt City Chiller.&nbsp;

There will be designated times for riding, but please note that to accommodate demonstrations and ensure everyone's safety, we may need to temporarily close the track.
