Daniel Richard Woodworth, age 86 years, passed away on January 19, 2023, at Good Samaritan Society of Hutchinson, KS. He was born June 11, 1936, in Satanta, KS, to Norval Winston and Vida Yvonne (Baty) Woodworth. Richard lived most of his life in Dodge City, KS and was a graduate of Dodge City Senior High School, Dodge City Community College and Fort Hays State University. On August 19, 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Patsy E. Rowton. Richard and Patsy began their teaching careers in Jetmore and Holyrood, KS before settling in Dodge City. Richard taught civics and coached at the middle school and high school levels until his retirement. His family was his true passion and he was never happier than when he could share his hobbies (boating, fishing, hunting and golfing) with them. Richard was raised in the Methodist faith and never veered from that foundation of love and faith and commitment to justice and equality for all. He was a kind and generous man with a big heart.

Richard is survived by his children and their families: Pam (Charles) Pierce, Hutchinson, KS (Sarah and Kevin Reade and children William, Elizabeth, and Jackson; Andrew Pierce and Adrianne Ghio); Jeff (Denise) Woodworth, Ellis, KS (Erin and Charlie Bauer and children Cassidy, Caden and Stormie and son CJ, Cinzly, Conrad, and Cally; Tara and Brevin Labarge and children Grayson, Wyatt and Parker; Toby and fiancé, Delany; Karen (Mario) Garcia, Lacrosse, KS (Joey and Bailey Garcia and sons Everson and Max; Jeremy and Gaby Garcia and son Harrison; Jack Garcia and fiancé Tylor; Emma Garcia and daughter Halle), Kathy (Bill) Keeley, Lacrosse, KS (Mitchell and Kylie Keeley and daughter Lainey; Olivia Rice and children Brady and Rosalynn; Kip and Tessa Keeley). He also leaves behind his sisters, Sharon Woodworth and Geri Hill; sister-in-law, Ellen Rowton; as well as his beloved extended family of nieces nephews and dear friends.

Richard was preceded in death by infant son, Larry Brent, his parents, his wife, his brother Wayne (and Wayne's wives, Mary Ann and Pat), and brother-in-law, Bob Rowton.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, KS. Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Residents selected the name, “The Founders Neighborhood,” recognizing the neighborhood’s history and area where several early civic leaders lived in Hutchinson.

The Founders Neighborhood boundaries include: Between East Avenue D and the railroad right-of-way between 1st&nbsp;and 3rd&nbsp;avenues, from the Ken Kennedy Freeway to Walnut Street. A map with more detailed boundaries can be found on the Hutchinson Healthy Neighborhood Initiative Facebook page. Next steps for the neighborhood include designs of neighborhood street sign-toppers, as well as continued engagement of residents for future events, activities, and initiatives.

Work continues on the six remaining featured neighborhoods that are a part of the Hutchinson Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative (HHNI). Hutch Rec and HHNI met with Farmington Park residents for their annual meeting on Jan. 17, with the other five neighborhoods meeting in February. These annual meetings give neighborhood residents a chance to review 2023 and determine priorities for the year ahead.

Newest featured neighborhood picks name

HUTCHINSON, Kan.:&nbsp;(Transcript from KWBW Sports)&nbsp;7:10 am on BW Radio, time to turn to sports.&nbsp;&nbsp;A lot of it will start with high school basketball. Hutchinson High School, a standalone game last night, in Derby came from behind to win 55-50. Wade Meyer hit his only basket of the game, a three pointer to give Hutchinson a 48-47 lead with 2:18 to play.

It was free throws, basically the rest of the way as the Salt Hawks hold on to push their record to 12 and 0. 

Duantay King had a career high 24 points to lead the #2 ranked team in 5A Hutchinson to that victory. 

Elsewhere in Boys action, Smokey Valley downed Trinity Catholic 50-43. Wichita Defenders beat Central Christian 61-44. On the girls side, El-Saline beat Central Christian Girls 59-50. Fairfield beat Stanford 62-20 and Smoky Valley over Hutchinson Trinity Catholic 58-27. 

Derby High School's Addison Brown has been named to the McDonald's All-America basketball team, just one of 24 players in the nation named to that squad. The All-America game will be played in Houston March 28.

 #12 Iowa State holds on to beat #5 K-State 80-76. What a game in Ames. Marquese Noel led K-State with 23 points. They now dropped to 17 and 3, 6 and 2 in the Big 12. That conference is just loaded with talent. 

The NJCAA has announced details for the 2023 NJCAA Division 1 Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Finals. Both national championship contests will be nationally televised for the first time on ESPNU as part of a multiyear meteorites agreement with ESPN. The D1 Men's Championship here in Hutchinson will be Saturday, March 25th at one. The women's Championship final will be on Monday, March 27th at 7:00. 

Hutchinson sophomore guard Jaiden Garrison named the Jayhawk Conference D1 Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday. The Sophomore from Little River averaged 16 and a half points, shot 48% from the floor in wins over Indy and Cloud. 

Mya Williams of the women was named the Jayhawk Women's Basketball Player of the Week yesterday, as well as Williams had games of 28 in a road win against Independance and 23 against Cloud County. 

Jason O'Toole, athletic director at Cowley College and long time employee there, has resigned effective February 28. O'Toole declining to comment on his resignation when reached by the phone by several sources at Cowley College.

 Sophomore Demitri Brown broke a meet record on Saturday and posted the fourth best indoor long jump in Blue Dragon Men's Track and Field History. For that he has been named the Jayhawk Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week. 

And finally the Royals announcing that they have acquired left handed pitcher Josh Taylor from Boston for infielder Alberto Mandisa and a player to be named later. Taylor, who will be 30 on March 2nd, missed the 2022 season with a back injury and three seasons in the majors with Boston from 2019 to 2021 pitched to a 3.69 era, pitched in six of Boston's 11 postseason games and was very impressive with an era in the low twos. He has held left handed batters over his career to a .174 average. Mondesi, 27, was maybe the most injured Royals player in the history of that franchise. Never could stay on the field and the Royals have unloaded him.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Head coach Lance Leipold announced the addition of 13 newcomers to the Kansas football roster today. All 13 student-athletes are on campus and enrolled at Kansas for the 2023 spring semester.

Among Kansas’ newcomers, 12 come from Division I programs. Combined, they have played in 250 career games prior to coming to Kansas.

The Jayhawks added six pieces to the defensive side of the ball, including defensive end Austin Booker (Minnesota), linebacker JB Brown (Bowling Green), defensive end Patrick Joyner Jr. (Utah State), defensive tackle Gage Keys (Minnesota) cornerback Damarius McGhee (LSU) and defensive tackle Devin Phillips (Colorado State).

On the offensive side of the ball, Kansas added offensive lineman Logan Brown (Wisconsin), running back Dylan McDuffie (Georgia Tech) offensive lineman Spencer Lovell (Cal), offensive lineman Hunter Barlow (Hutchinson CC) and tight end Max Muehlberger (Oklahoma State). The Jayhawks also added two specialists in Seth Keller (Texas State) and Charlie Weinrich (Nebraska).

This newest group of Jayhawks join the 2023 recruiting class announced in December and are enrolled at Kansas for the 2023 spring semester. Freshmen Calvin Clements, Surahz Buncom, Jaden Hamm and Tony Terry are also enrolled for the 2023 spring semester.

Garrison was named the Jayhawk Conference Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday for those performances.

The sophomore from Little River scored 15 points, making some big shots down the stretch of Hutchinson's 115-94 win at Independence last Wednesday. He then hit a go-ahead baseline 15-footer with 39 seconds left to cap an 18-point outing in an 88-82 win over Cloud County.

For the week, Garrison averaged 16.5 points while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor. Garrison was 7 of 17 from the 3-point line. Garrison had a career single-game high six assists in a key road win at Independence.

The Waxahachie, Texas, product was named the Jayhawk Conference Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Williams became just the sixth Blue Dragon player in program history to score 1,000 career points, reaching that milestone on Sunday in a 23-point effort against Cloud County.

Williams had games of 28 points in a road win against Independence and 23 against the Thunderbirds. She also averaged 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.5 steals last week. Her career-high six steals also came in the Cloud County game.

Williams is the fourth-leading scorer in the KJCCC at 18.0 points per game. She is No. 3 in the KJCCC in free-throw shooting at 84.1 percent and her 49 3-pointers are tied for fourth in the KJCCC.

The Blue Dragon guard also won weekly conference honors in Week 1.

Kenneth Robert Garrigues, age 78, transitioned from this life to be with his Savior on January 18, 2023, surrounded by his family in his home.

Kenny was born on May 27, 1944, in Pratt Kansas to Charles and Helen Garrigues. Graduating from Preston High School, Class of 1963 in Preston, Kansas. He was first on the draft list in 1964 and off to war in January of 1965 with the United States Air Force. He proudly served our country earning the rank of Sergeant, Level E4, stationed in Don Muang RTAFB, Thailand. Kenny’s auto body skills learned during his career in the Air Force helped him restore many boats and cars for friends. Kenny studied Moral Psychology and Fire Science, earning a degree from Hutchinson Community College in Criminal Justice and later became a firearms instructor that believed every child should learn gun respect and safety. Ken loved his job as the State of Kansas Area Manager for Cheney Reservoir, first with the Kansas Fish and Game and later as Kansas Wildlife and Parks. Kenny lost his first child, a son, but later welcomed two daughters Kenda Jo (Garrigues) Eloriaga and Kristin Jan (Garrigues) Fairbank. Kenny taught his young daughters to love nature by caring for wildlife as well as how to water ski, fish, hunt, firearm safety and to become an excellent marksman.

In 1987, Kenny found the love of his life and was united in marriage to Patricia Byrne (Burr). She completed his family with the addition of her children that he loved as his own, James D. Byrne, Mary Christine Byrne, and Deborah Suzanne Callaway. Kenny and Pat spent nearly 36 years together filled with many happy memories. Kenny completed a 35-year career as Area Game Manager for the Kansas Wildlife and Parks and moved to Grand Lake Oklahoma to be near the family he loved and fulfilling his lifelong dream to live on a blue water lake.

In his life and during his retirement, Kenny could be found taking care of others. Kenny was the first to step up to help when a child or animal needed anything. He was a “jack-of-all-trades” and spent much of his time enjoying his passion for cooking, yard work, gardening, research, politics, and most of all: spending time with his family. Kenny was known for his “truckers gardens” and Master Gardening skills he learned as a small child helping at his grandparents Greenhouse, Nursery and Garden center near Hutchinson Kansas.

Kenny was a loving great-grandfather, grandfather, father, uncle, husband and son. Kenny was preceded in death by his parents Charles Louis and Helen Marjorie Stanley-Garrigues, his brother Charles Garrigues, his sisters Lola and Jeanine, his infant son, and great granddaughter Hope Plank. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Housing Commission will consider a letter of support for the proposed Plum Creek housing subdivision at its meeting on Wednesday.

According to developer Jim Strawn, this development will be located just to the east of Plum Creek Elementary School on 43rd St.

This will be the first sub-division in Hutchinson to implement the Rural Housing Incentive District (RHID) for single family homes. The improvements such as design, water, sewer, storm water, curb and gutter, streets, electric, gas and sidewalks would be funded by bonds through the City of Hutchinson and paid for through the property tax (paid annually) until the bonds are paid off. Once the bonds are paid in full, the city, county, schools and college all will get their normal percentage. 

By funding it in this manner, there would be no special assessments on the homes. Special assessments have been a deterrent to the Salina housing market. Given the recent increase in interest rates, this probably will become more pronounced.

The project is also requesting a Moderate-Income Housing (MIH) Grant. The City of Hutchinson would be the applicant and the Plum Creek Project would be the designee to receive the funds. MIH Grants are highly competitive, the next application deadline is February 17th. The MIH grant request will be for the first phase of Plum Creek which includes 15 single family for sale homes, eight duplex for rent units, a clubhouse and pool.

 The developer and builder are Strawn Construction. Heartland Housing Partners is the development consultant. Strawn Construction has constructed MIH projects in Marion, Moundridge, Lyons, Inman and McPherson. Heartland Housing Partners has participated in RHID and MIH projects across the state, including participating in 12 MIH awards and over 25 RHID’s.

🏀 Saturday's Blue Dragon-Thunderbird games postponed until Sunday

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team returns to the Sports Arena Sunday looking to even the season series with the Cloud County Thunderbirds.

The Blue Dragons (15-4, 9-4 KJCCC) and the Thunderbirds (12-7, 7-6) will tip off at 2 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network and broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 1:45 p.m.

Hutchinson started the season with seven-straight wins and was ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA Rankings. That all changed on November 19 when Cloud County administered the first loss of the season to the Blue Dragons, defeating Hutchinson 75-65 in Concordia. That loss was the start of a 3-4 stretch for the Dragons that sent them tumbling out of the national rankings.

The Blue Dragons have righted the ship since then, reeling off five-consecutive victories. The Dragons played one of their most complete games of the season on Wednesday in an 82-58 victory at Independence.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;scored a game-high 28 points for the second-straight game. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/duffy_monae_4kqq">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;posted her second-straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Blue Dragons limited Independence to 28.1 percent shooting and forcing 22 turnovers.

Cloud County was stunned by Northwest Tech its last time out on Thursday. The Thunderbirds shot a frigid 26 percent from the field and was 0 of 12 from 3-point range in a 52-47 loss to the Mavericks. Alize Ruiz had 13 points and 16 rebounds to lead Cloud County on Thursday.

Ruiz was part of a lethal 1-2 punch for Cloud County in its victory over Hutchinson on November 19 Ruiz had 20 points and nine rebounds, while Maimouna Sissoko had 22 points and 11 rebounds to pace Cloud County past the Dragons. The Thunderbirds shot 45.0 percent, while holding Hutchinson to 37.7 percent from the floor. Duffy had 15 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/armstead_journey_v4yx">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;had 14 to lead the Dragons.

Rosa Lee (McMurry) Freeman was born in Greensburg, KS, on October 14, 1926.&nbsp; She was the daughter of William Lynn and Rhuy K. (Williams) McMurry.&nbsp; Rosa Lee passed away on January 18, 2023, in WaKeeney, KS.&nbsp;

She grew up on the family farm near Mullinville, KS, with her three brothers and two sisters.&nbsp; Rosa Lee graduated from Mullinville High School, Mullinville, KS, in 1945, and then attended Wichita Beauty School, graduating in 1946.&nbsp; She had a shop in Greensburg until meeting and marrying Lloyd E. Freeman in 1948.&nbsp; They lived in Greensburg and then moved to Clarksville, AR, where Lloyd was in school at the College of the Ozarks.&nbsp; In 1950, they moved to the Abbyville, KS, area where Lloyd farmed and drove a Standard Oil fuel truck.&nbsp; From Abbyville, they moved to Jamestown, KS, and Pratt, KS, and finally to WaKeeney, KS, in 1958. She was a homemaker until they began operating the Standard Oil Truck Stop on I-70 in 1963.&nbsp; After selling the truck stop, Rosa Lee worked at the local IGA grocery store.&nbsp; She was active in the Methodist Church and after retirement she volunteered in the hospital gift shop.&nbsp;

Rosa Lee was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Lloyd Freeman; son, Donald Freeman; infant grandson, Jarod Ray Freeman; infant brother, Donald McMurry; sisters, Ruth Freeman and Harriet George; brother, Dale McMurry; and son-in-law, Brian Hill.

Stephen Allen “Steve” Winkler, 73, died January 18, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born November 17, 1949, in Hutchinson, to William Allen “Bill” and Evelyn Eileen (Strohm) Winkler.

Steve graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1968, and received his associate’s degree from Hutchinson Community Junior College. He worked in management at Sears over 25 years, before retiring from building homes for Interfaith Housing in 2015.&nbsp; Steve was a “self-doer”.&nbsp; He enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, and “making things”.&nbsp; When Steve’s sons were younger, he was a Webelos Leader and a member of “Wizards of Wichita”, learning along with his son, Mike, magician tricks.&nbsp; Steve was a member of Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson.

On June 28, 1969, he married his high school sweetheart, Kathryn Louise “Kathy” Burdette, at Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Steve is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of over 53 years, Kathy Winkler; sons, Joe Winkler and Mike Winkler (Leah), all of Hutchinson; brother, Brad Winkler (June) of Tucson, AZ; and four grandchildren, Emily Winkler, Britney Winkler, Finley Winkler, and Rowan Winkler.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Jonathan Paul Winkler.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Eastwood Church of Christ, 2500 N. Plum, Hutchinson, with Wayne DeWindt officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Eastwood Church of Christ, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS&nbsp; 67501.

Hello again, friends. Today's installment from our "Hutch - Then &amp; Now Collection" takes us to the unit block of East Avenue A on the north side.

James M. McVay moved to Hutchinson in late 1892 and purchased the Central Livery Stables at 110 S. Main. 

Business went well for him and, in July of 1895, he purchased two buildings at 12 &amp; 14 E. Ave. A, occupied by the Dice boys as blacksmith and mechanics shops. 

These buildings were among the first ever built in this city. Here he erected a new, large livery stable. In 1898, he increased his business by purchasing the Wolcott Hack service. 

In 1909, James was a councilman for the third ward. In March of 1912, James M. died and his wife, Mary, took over the business with her sons. 

About this time, Mary got into horse racing big time and had many champions. In 1915, the McVay brothers got into the taxi-cab service. 

The first photo shows the McVay Livery and Taxi Service in 1916, right as the Salt City Business College building was being completed.

 </figure>In the 1940s, they had a rental car program. In the 1950s, they had a bus line stop there. In the 1960s, they had an ambulance service there. In 1974, the McVay family ended their part of the business at this location and others took over. L.P.F. Equipment Supply took over the property in 1977 and the business was no longer known as McVay's. The third photo shows the building today owned by S &amp; N Richardson L.L.C. with the building being used for Performance Auto. <figure>
