HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System (HRHS) is pleased to announce the hiring of Cameron Meyer as the new Chief Financial Officer. Meyer will be responsible for overseeing, building and structuring the team that manages the financial operations, budgets and fiscal well-being of the entire healthcare system. He will work closely with executive leadership to ensure financial goals align with the overall strategic plan and vision for the system.

Prior to coming to HRHS, Meyer spent six years as the Chief Financial Officer for Excelsior Springs City Hospital where he prioritized core hospital operations and had executive oversight of finance, revenue cycle, supply chain and IT. During his time there, the hospital doubled operating revenue, and doubled average weekly cash collections.

Meyer started his journey with HRHS in early March as the Interim Controller.

“When Cameron first came on campus he quickly won over the team with his poised confidence. No matter the challenge he was faced with, he thoroughly thought through the processes and brought a new broader perspective to the table,” states President and CEO, Benjamin Anderson. “We look forward to the growth we will see and increase our excellence in financial stability.”

Over the summer, Cameron and his family will relocate from the Kansas City area to the Hutchinson community. “I’ve always viewed my role as being a steward of a community asset while also making an impact in people’s health. Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System hires Chief Financial Officer

LINDSBORG, Kan. — Celebrate Independence Day in Lindsborg with good, old-fashioned fun! Lindsborg's Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration at Swensson Park is free and open to the public.

All ages are invited to meet at the gazebo on the 400 block of North Main Street at 5:00 p.m. to decorate strollers, wagons, bikes, or yourself, then march through the park.&nbsp;

The entertainment will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will include community talent and the community band performance.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Cherie Sage with Safe Kids Kansas notes that you should have a plan for who is allowed to shoot fireworks before you buy them.

"We're seeing an increase, actually, in injuries," Sage said.&nbsp; "In fact, injuries last year more than doubled for the 14 to 18 year old age group. Our highest incidents of injuries are going to be like the mortars and artillery fireworks, but other fireworks like parachutes and fountains and little spinners, things like that that we're used to that are kind of like the family favorites. Those are causing injuries."

Sparklers are more dangerous than they may appear.

"A lot of people, that's the first thing they think, sparklers are safe for young kids, they hand kids sparklers," Sage said. "It's really important to know they account for almost one quarter of all emergency room visits that are related to fireworks. Kids should really not use sparklers. Those can actually burn at temperatures hot enough to melt glass. I don't think a lot of people really think of that. Kids can get injured by sparks that fly into their eyes and their face, and also just, you know, contact burns, touching, you know, touching the end of a sparkler."

The most important thing is to have a designated responsible person watching any kids. If everyone is watching the kids, no one is watching the kids.

"The most important part of Independence Day and fireworks and any celebration is active supervision," Sage said. "That means that the kids have an adult that has eyes on them, and that they know that they're in a safe space. So it's also helpful to create a safe zone that's far enough back from any fireworks that are being set off."

Have a plan to keep kids safe around fireworks

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Cashless tolling on the Kansas Turnpike starts Monday, and Turnpike CEO Steve Hewitt said those with a KTAG already know the drill.

"You don't have to get a new KTAG," Hewitt said. "It's going to work the same way. So you're going to go through different zones on the Turnpike versus paying at the booth. We are taking those booths out, number one. That's the main infrastructure thing. Eventually, those booths are coming out. You don't have to stop at the booth to pay. KTAG customers don't have to worry about moving over to the KTAG lane. Just continue to move. We'll ding your KTAG, bill you the normal way. It'll look maybe a little different on your bill when you see it come in, but virtually no change."

"If you don't have a KTAG, it's going to cost you basically double in tolls," Hewitt said. "Nevertheless, it's okay. If you don't want, I'm on the Turnpike once in a blue moon, and I don't want to have to worry about getting a KTAG, not a problem. You drive through. You have options here. The first option, do nothing. I'm going to take a picture of your license plate. I'm going to look up your registration. I'm going to send you a bill in the mail. That's the first thing. You don't have to worry about it. Within 30 days, you just pay that bill. Or you can go early and go online to our DriveKS.com or our app on your smartphone at DriveKS and pay your tolls early if you want to. But it's really going to be really easy because, you know, you're not going to have to worry about stopping at the booth."

Tolls will actually be less expensive in the new system.

"The average cost is about 5.2 cents a mile for a passenger car," That's going to 4.8 cents. Your tolls are coming down. For a commercial truck, you know, a five-axle big truck, it's going from, you know, to 13.8. So that's dropping even from 14. So I think those are the really good things that our commercial as well as our passenger vehicles are going to see a lower per mile rate, simplistic, easy to manage, understand, and we want to pass the savings or efficiency on to customers. Now, if you do not have a KTAG, real simple, just double that."

They will round up to the next penny on the toll if it isn't even.

The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches in 1   hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin   shortly.

Forever Plaid is the story of four high schoolers who formed their own singing group and were preparing to really “hit it big” when they were killed in a car crash before ever having the chance. This show is their return to earth to get their one chance at their “big break.”

The musical makes a feast of the lush harmonies of “golden oldies” with songs such as "Three Coins in the Fountain," "Moments to Remember," "Sixteen Tons," "Chain Gang," "Heart and Soul," "Lady of Spain," "Shangri-La," "Rags to Riches," and of course, "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing."

The Sterling quartet in “Plaid” already have the chemistry of four buddies down because they are. Luke Harding, Caleb Brownlee, Noah Svaty – all are Sterling High School alumni. The fourth is Robbie Stansbury, from Lyons High School. All four have been close friends through their experiences in music and theatre at Sterling College.

They started singing Barbershop music on their own over a year ago and discovered Forever Plaid about the same time. Harding said, “We all absolutely love harmonies. When I found out there was an entire show centered around a singing male quartet, I knew we needed to do it.”

The encore performances in Hutchinson are being presented as a fundraiser for the cast and crew to take the show to Alaska in July. 

They are planning to perform the show in the remote small town of Cordova, Alaska where they will also be offering a theatre camp for young people. 

Admission to the Hutchinson presentations of “Forever Plaid” will be by donation rather than a standard ticket price. 

Stage 9 is located in downtown Hutchinson at 9 South Main.

Forever Plaid coming to Stage 9 for one last show Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Donations are being taken for a family devastated by a fire earlier this month.

On June 23, James and Natalie Bratcher's home was substantially damaged and all contents and belongings in the home were lost in a fire north of Hutchinson.

James and Natalie have two children, Emma is seven and Allie is six and they have a little sister due in July. All the items that had been accumulated for the new baby were lost in the fire.

First National Bank of Hutchinson has established a tax-deductible fund for donations to assist the family. Just designate the money at any First National Bank location to the Bratcher Family Fire Fund.

You can also donate items to the family at 1208 North Main in Hutchinson from July 1 to July 12.

Items will be taken from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

They are looking for girls size 2 shoes, and girl clothing sizes 7-8 and 10-12.

City to resume enforcement of storm debris code July 15

INMAN, Kan. — Drive through the small town of Inman in McPherson County to see the progress of what will soon be a newly painted mural on the grain elevator east of Highway 61 in town.&nbsp;

"So that was their main theme they wanted was the turkey red wheat and also to showcase that Inman, you know, has built their own swathers or silage and stuff and so those were two of the things that they really wanted to have in the mural," Mindy Allen of Mindy's Murals said. "And so they gave me their thoughts of what they wanted and then they just sort of let me come up with the design and then, you know, we tweaked it a little bit to work for what they wanted."

The project is to help celebrate Kansas heritage with 150 years of turkey red winter wheat and the settlers that brought it to Kansas.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/d03de31d-5fe2-475f-b80a-b107e8f19c6f">Ron Regehr said in a press release from Inman Museum Association that the mural will serve as a landmark for Inman history and future aspirations as they embark on a new 15,000 square foot facility that will share the stories of custom cutters from the Inman and Buhler area and across the Great Plains.</a>

Allen's mural is going to be painted with a high performance acrylic paint which will give the mural more durability and add more vibrancy. She also said that public art in small towns gives the towns character.&nbsp;

"I feel like art just brings everything to life in a way," Allen said. "When you drive through a town or city that doesn't have any kind of art, it just doesn't feel the same as when you are driving through a city that has murals to look at. Whether it is something that is historical or something that you know relates to the business that it is on or something that is just purely for art."

Allen said she has been painting murals for almost 12 years now. She's painted exterior murals for the past four years. This is Allen's first time painting a mural on a grain elevator.

"To me its not any different than any other mural," Allen said.  "It's the same process that I go through to paint it to get it up there. The difference is, just the time involved using a lift. It takes awhile to move it around and get it to where I need it to be."

The project was made possible through the support and collaboration with Inman residents, local organizations, the <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/bfa9e756-9af8-4d2c-b51a-43b96c7471f7">Kansas Department of Commerce</a>, and the Office of Rural Prosperity.&nbsp;

Allen told Hutch Post that she predicts the mural to be done by July 12, but it's possible for it to be finished by a later date.&nbsp;

The community will have a chance to witness the mural's progress at the <a href="https://www.inmanharvestcelebration.com">Inman Harvest Celebration</a> on Saturday, June 29.&nbsp;

Inman grain elevator soon to be transformed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Raj Bhala, Brenneisen Distinguished Professor at KU Law, has made the latest edition of his trade law textbook available to the world on the Internet. The brand new, 6th&nbsp;edition of&nbsp;International Trade Law: A Comprehensive E-Textbook&nbsp;has just been published by the University of Kansas, School of Law, Wheat Law Library.

The new edition was published open access via&nbsp;<a href="https://kuscholarworks.ku.edu/">KU ScholarWorks</a>, KU’s online institutional repository of scholarly work by KU faculty, staff and students managed by KU Libraries. The new edition spans eight volumes over 188 chapters and more than 6,500 pages. There have been many changes in trade law since the publishing of Bhala's last edition of the textbook in 2019.

"In fact, one of the biggest changes is really the paradigm shift, the clear shift in the framework away from the presumption of free or freer trade and trade liberalization towards greater protection and even protectionism," Bhala said.&nbsp; "One of the reasons for that shift is the COVID pandemic and the experience of dependence on foreign countries, not all of which are friendly to the United States, for PPE, personal protective equipment. And then the development of the vaccine, principally in the United States, and the phenomenon of vaccine nationalism, of taking the position that, well, we have to make sure our population is protected first with the vaccine. So that combination of we don't want to be reliant for imports on critical, dare I say, national security items, here the security, the criticality being health, and we also don't want to lose control of the domestic supply in favor of just exportation worldwide of critical items has helped cause that paradigm shift away from free trade. So that's just one of the new developments that are captured in the new sixth edition of the eight volume trade textbook."

Bhala has been constantly at work updating the book.

"The additional writing went from about 4,300 pages to about 6,500 pages," Bhala said. "The writing also involved reorganizing the chapters and the volumes to clarify the material, make sure it's more user-friendly, and to analyze more deeply some of the issues that had been discussed, and then to deal with an array of new issues. Industrial policy, India's trade policy, the new sanctions against Iran, the completely new sanctions regime concerning Russia, just a few of the topics that were really quite brand new, and then some new theory, international relations theory, to help readers put in a big-picture conceptual framework all the shifts, and then revisiting some longstanding issues, the U.S.-China trade war, the steel and aluminum war, definitions of national security, and how we are defining and redefining that critical term. So it was a 24-7, 365 project, which I really love, because this textbook originated 32 years ago, and it has been very much the joyful centerpiece of my professional academic career."

One of the reasons to make this book open access is to take at least one obstacle away from prospective trade lawyers, no matter where they live.

"It breaks my heart when I hear students, and I do hear students from Kansas, from India, all over the world and all across America, say that they really want to go into international business law," Bhala said. "They want to take the international trade law course, but they cannot afford the cost of textbooks. Roughly, these are ballpark statistics, but over the last several years and made worse by the Russia-Ukraine War, the cost of printing books has gone up significantly. Many paper mills and printers have gone out of business. Here we have, at KU, the leader in open access among American public universities. I mean, the only universities in America that were in front of KU on getting materials open access were Harvard and MIT and Stanford's Graduate School of Education. Then back well over 20 years ago, our faculty passed an open access policy. Now, that said, we lawyers and law professors, and I am very much guilty of this, have been slow to take advantage of the open access period, the open access opportunity. And our textbooks and our treatises still tend to be by conventional paper-based publishers, sometimes offered in e-format, but for a fee, for a big fee. Well, we've all, as you know, we've all watched the mountain of student debt grow larger. As you very rightly point out, there is a problem of egalitarianism in the legal profession, and I see it in the international legal profession. It's really important that all the students who want to go into international trade law have the opportunity to do so, and that we don't add to their debt burden."

Bhala's hope is that this will inspire other textbook writers to make their materials open access, in an effort to make the best scholarship in the world available to those with the aptitude, without regard to the economic situation they come from.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson announces the replacement of a critical water line under Severance Street between 17th Avenue and 23rd Avenue. The repair is scheduled to commence on Monday, July 1 at 9:00 a.m. and is expected to be completed by 3:00 p.m. A new line is being put into service requiring the shutdown of a major water line. During the repair period the Water Treatment Center will only be able to operate at 25% production capacity.

Once the water line construction is completed on Monday, focus will turn to repair of Severance Street – street repair should be completed by the end of July, depending on weather.

Since the water treatment plant will not be able to keep up with the typical hot summer water demand while running at 25% production capacity, we kindly request residents to conserve water while the pipeline is out of service.

Repair Details: The repair work involves replacement of the water line under Severance Street between 17th Avenue and 23rd Avenue. Our contractor will be working diligently to complete the repair as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Duration of Works: The repair work is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 1 at 9:00 a.m. and is anticipated to be completed by Monday, July 1 at 3:00 p.m.

Water Conservation Measures: To mitigate the impact on reduced water production capacity, residents are encouraged to conserve water during the repair period. Simple measures such as reducing unnecessary water consumption, postponing lawn &amp; garden watering, and avoiding non-essential water activities can significantly help in conserving water resources.

Contingency Plans: In the event that the repair takes longer than anticipated, we have contingency measures in place to ensure continued water supply. Additional updates will be provided to keep residents informed of any changes to the repair schedule. City urges water conservation during Severance water line work

RENO COUNTY —&nbsp; United Way of Reno County is investing $850,000 in 21 local nonprofits for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. This includes $306,000 for Education programs, $224,000 for Health Programs, and $320,000 for Income Stability Programs. These funds will support 33 different programs tackling important issues in Health, Education, Income Stability, and Disaster Recovery in our community.

The allocation process involved a thorough two-day Allocations Presentations event. Nonprofit partners who received funding presented their needs and plans for the upcoming year. A committee of 16 volunteers from diverse industries across Reno County carefully deliberated to ensure the funds were used where they could make the biggest difference.

Lacey Mills, CEO of United Way of Reno County, emphasized the powerful impact of these investments, saying, "Here at United Way of Reno County, we allocate every dollar thoughtfully to support 21 nonprofits and their 33 diverse programs, alongside our own initiatives. Your donation to United Way goes twice as far, making a real difference. We also work as policy advocates, find ways to work smarter, pool resources, and build partnerships across sectors to make a bigger impact in our community."

United Way of Reno County commits $850,000 to local nonprofits

MCPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson Main Street’s Board of Directors is excited to announce the hiring of its next Director, Johni Doughman. 

“Johni’s positive attitude and optimistic spirit is contagious. Her past experiences and employment have been a perfect training ground for her new role as Director of McPherson Main Street,” said Ben Coffey, Main Street’s Board President and recently the Interim Director. 

Johni has been an educator in McPherson County for the last 15 years. 

Before teaching, she owned her own small business and has served as a program director of a non-profit organization. Doughman has experience in writing grants, fundraising, event planning, and promotions.

Marc Seller, the board treasurer, said this of Johni: “She has a partnership mentality that I fully expect her to apply with our organization to increase value for our member businesses. Johni’s first day will be Monday, July 8, and she is ready to hit the ground running. 

“I’m excited to work with members and established leadership to make a real impact in McPherson through the support of businesses and organizations,” said Doughman.

“I couldn’t be more excited to have her lead this organization,” said Coffey. “She will add value to our member businesses and organizations and the City of McPherson in general.” 

In her spare time, Johni enjoys time with family as well as thrifting, crafting, cooking, and camping. She and her husband Brad have raised their two children, Brayden and Braylee, in Canton, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

South Hutch Freedom Fest Saturday

MCPHERSON COUNTY — Crews transporting a large boiler pressure tank across portions of Kansas on the way to SpaceX in California had a difficult time in McPherson on Thursday morning, as the load came through town on U.S. 56 Highway/Kansas Avenue.

Police in the city of McPherson thanked the personnel who quickly moved all the street equipment and the patrol officers for safely directing traffic. They also issued a special thanks to the members of the community for their patience.

SpaceX delivery causes traffic delays in McPherson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA is pleased with where membership numbers are trending right now.

"We finished May with 4,927 total members here at our YMCA in Hutchinson," Foster said. "With our growth that we've had in June, I kind of expect that number to be over 5,000 total members after we finish this month, which is a pretty awesome deal and a pretty good new milestone of an all-time high for total members at our Y here in Hutchinson."

This is a great growth curve compared to just a few years ago.

"Right after COVID in 2021, we were down to about 1,900 total members," Foster said. "In the last three plus years, the membership has really bounced back and grown quite a bit, which has been very encouraging."

With the growth of the YMCA, it is time for a new Y in Hutchinson and fundraising for that continues.

"Sometime mid-July, we will be launching what we call the public phase of the capital campaign," Foster said. "That will give anybody and everybody an opportunity to make a donation, whether it's as small as $50 or even bigger, that would help us kind of get over the hump and hit that $20 million goal. And then hopefully, barring any unforeseen circumstances, hopefully still looking to break ground later this year on that new facility."
