DODGE CITY – The No. 14-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team was limited to five hits as No. 15 Butler defeated the Blue Dragons 10-2 in the Region VI Tournament winner's bracket final on Saturday at Legends Park.

Hutchinson (43-7) had its 14-game winning streak snapped and dropped into the losers' bracket. The Blue Dragons will play Colby at 10 a.m. on Sunday in the losers' bracket final. A victory in that game puts Hutchinson in the Region VI championship game, which would be at noon.

Trailing 4-0, the Blue Dragons got their only offense of the game in the third inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/dougherty_ella_9103">Ella Dougherty</a>'s sacrifice fly scored&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/darnell_jaeleigh_lirb">Jaeleigh Darnell</a>&nbsp;and an infield single by&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/grimes_madison_371p">Madison Grimes</a>&nbsp;scored&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/wertz_riley_hm55">Riley Wertz</a>&nbsp;to cut the Dragon deficit to 4-2.

The Dragons had just two baserunners over the final four innings.

Wertz went 2 for 3 to lead the Dragons with a double in the third inning. Darnell,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/sandoval_olivia_qojo">Olivia Sandoval</a>&nbsp;and Grimes had the other hits.

Butler had 15 total hits and took advantage of three Hutchinson fielding errors.

She allowed five hits and three runs in 1 1-3 inning. 🥎 Blue Dragons fall in Region VI Winners Bracket finals

DODGE CITY – The Hutchinson Community College Softball team advanced to the Region VI Tournament winner's bracket final for the first time since 2017 after defeating Barton 6-4 in a second-round match-up on Saturday at Legends Park.

The No. 14 Blue Dragons (43-6) advanced to play No. 15 Butler in the winner's bracket final later on Saturday afternoon. That winner of that game advances to Sunday's Noon championship as the undefeated team in the eight-team double-elimination tournament.

With the victory, the Blue Dragons extended their winning streak to a season-high 14 games. The Dragons also set a new program record for wins in a season, surpassing the 1987 Blue Dragons.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/pennycuff_morgan_4wht">Morgan Pennycuff</a>&nbsp;improved to 16-2 in the pitching circle with five tough innings. Leading 3-0, Pennycuff made her only mistake of the game when she allowed a three-run home run in the fourth inning to tie the game.

Pennycuff allowed four hits and three earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts. Pennycuff's 16 wins in 2023 ties her for ninth on the Dragon single-season pitching wins list with Christa Dougherty (1988) and Gloria Jobe (2006).

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/wertz_riley_hm55">Riley Wertz</a>&nbsp;earned her seventh save of the season, her first save since April 5. Saturday was her first save opportunity since April 5. She had a stream of 18 2-3 innings of scoreless relief snapped in the sixth inning when Barton scored a single run to pull within 6-4. The Jayhawk Conference's all-time saves leader earned her 16th career save, striking out two.

The Blue Dragons had only six hits against three Barton pitchers.

The Dragons scores an unearned run in the first when&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/goetz_aspen_qe50">Aspen Goetz</a>&nbsp;hit a sacrifice fly to right to score&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/dougherty_ella_9103">Ella Dougherty</a>.

Hutchinson made it 3-0 in the third when a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/grimes_madison_371p">Madison Grimes</a>&nbsp;groundout drove in&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/lies_korri_wryv">Korri Lies</a>&nbsp;and Goetz roped a double to right-center to score Dougherty.

After Barton tied the game in the top of the fourth, the Blue Dragons immediately answered back. A Dougherty double scored&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/stipsits_allie_zmyh">Allie Stipsits</a>&nbsp;with a go-ahead run.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/sandoval_olivia_qojo">Olivia Sandoval</a>&nbsp;then hit a two-run single to center for a 6-3 lead.

Dougherty led the offense, going 2 for 2 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI. Stipsits was 1 of 3 with a double. Goetz was 1 for 2 with a double and she drove in her 95th and 96th RBIs of the season.

The Blue Dragons will bid to play in their first Region VI Tournament championship game since 2017 when they were at the Division II level. The Dragons haven't played in a Division I Region VI Tournament championship game since 1992.

🥎 Blue Dragons advance to Region VI  Winner's Bracket Final

We are sad to announce the passing of Sharon Mae Blank, 79, on May 2, 2023, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born in Anthony, Kansas on August 21, 1943, to Ralph and Marjorie (Bunce) Johnston.

Sharon graduated from Anthony High School in 1961, and then attended Kansas State University to study elementary education. She met Don while in Manhattan. She finished her degree at McPherson College after moving to the farm. She enjoyed farming with Don and their son Brad. Sharon and Don also enjoyed square dancing, where they met some of their best friends. Sharon was a member of the Starlight Square Dance Club, a co-founder of the Inman Booster Club, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a big K-State fan and enjoyed attending games with her family. Sharon was so proud that all her grandkids attended or plan to attend K-State. She loved watching her grandkids participate in sports and other activities. Sharon was known for her wonderful cooking and baking, especially her creative cakes that she made for family and friends. She loved gardening with her daughter Kim and her grandkids. The Grandkids Garden sold their produce at the Reno County Farmers Market for the last 13 years.

On July 18, 1964, Sharon married Donald Blank in Anthony. They shared 36 years of marriage before he passed on November 23, 2000.

She is survived by: daughter, Kim Manke (Jason), Hutchinson; son, Brad Blank (Cheri), Hutchinson; and grandchildren, Taylor and Jaron Manke, Kyler, Kolby, and Kendyn Blank.

Sharon was preceded in death by: her parents; brother, Ronald Johnston; and husband, Don Blank.

Funeral service will be 10 am Monday, May 8, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 am to 5pm Saturday or 1 pm to 8 pm Sunday, with family present from 5 to 7 pm Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

DODGE CITY – The No. 14-ranked and top-seeded Hutchinson Community College softball team tied the program's all-time record for wins in a season on Friday in a Region VI Tournament opening-round victory over Pratt at Legends Park.

The top five batters in Hutchinson's order combined to go 11 for 17 with 13 RBIs as the Blue Dragons run-ruled eighth-seeded Pratt 15-4 in the opening game of the tournament.

The Blue Dragons will play fourth-seeded Barton in a winner's bracket semifinal on Field 4 at Noon on Saturday. The Blue Dragons will play a second game on Saturday, either at 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. on Field 4.

Now 42-6 after Friday's victory, the Blue Dragons tie the 1987 Blue Dragons for the program's all-time season record for wins. The 2023 Blue Dragons are just the fourth team in Blue Dragon program history to reach the 40-win plateau, the third time under head coach Jaime Rose.

The Blue Dragons extended their season-high winning streak to 13 games.

Blue Dragon freshman third baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/sandoval_olivia_qojo">Olivia Sandoval</a>&nbsp;broke a single-season Blue Dragon record for doubles. With two doubles on Friday, Sandoval now has 22 doubles and moved past Stephanie Balthazor (2007) and Kelcee Thompson (2016) for that season record.

Hutchinson broke the game open with a seven-run second inning and put the game away with a five-run fourth inning. The Blue Dragons out-hit Pratt 13-7.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/goetz_aspen_qe50">Aspen Goetz</a>&nbsp;drove in four runs – she now has a total of 94 for the season – going 2 for 4 with a double. Goetz had an RBI single in the first inning and had a three-run double in the second. Now with 78 hits for the season, Goetz ranks No. 3 on the single-season hits list.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/grimes_madison_371p">Madison Grimes</a>&nbsp;went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBIs. She also drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk in the second. Grimes now has 211 career hits.

Sandoval was 2 for 4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs. Now with 73 hits, Sandoval is fourth on the Dragon single-season hits list.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/dougherty_ella_9103">Ella Dougherty</a>&nbsp;went 2 for 3 with a double, three RBIs and three runs. She had an RBI single in the second and a two-run double in the fourth. Now with 130 career hits, Dougherty tied Jenn Tanno (2006-07) for third on the career hits list.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/mastin_alexis_xhvz">Alexis Mastin</a>&nbsp;went 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Sophomore pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/weitze_kiersten_naju">Kierstan Weitze</a>&nbsp;earned her 10th win of the season and 19th of her career with 1 2-3 innings of relief work. She allowed two hits and two runs with three strikeouts. Weitze is now seventh on the career pitching wins list.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the third year, Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, Hutchinson Community College, Hutchinson Public Schools, and Greater Hutch, an Economic Development Partnership for Reno County, collaborated to host Signing Day on Thursday, May 4th at HC&amp;TEA.

At the event, 80 High School &amp; Post-Secondary students heard from Debra Teufel, Hutchinson Reno County Chamber of Commerce President &amp; CEO, Dr. Carter File, President of Hutchinson Community College, Dr. Dawn Johnson, Superintendent of Hutchinson Public Schools, and Travis Riebel, Director of HC&amp;TEA.

Students signed letters of intent to join their peers and committed to their future technical program pathway of choice including: Automotive Technology, Collision Repair, Welding, Manufacturing Technology, Machine Technology, Construction Trades, and Medical Services CNA &amp; CMA. Family, instructors, administration, counselors, industry partners, potential employers, and government officials celebrated the students and commitment they made to their future.

Signing Day celebrated in Hutchinson

Victoria Lee O’neal, 49, died May 4, 2023, at her residence in Hutchinson. She was born April 9, 1974, in Hutchinson, to Michael Dennis and Patricia Lee (Patterson) O’neal.

She was a Hutchinson High School graduate in 1993. Later on, she attended Hutchinson Community College, where she earned her paralegal degree in 2002. Victoria worked for Kroger as a data entry specialist for several years.

Victoria was an avid reader and even had her own book collection, she also enjoyed online gaming and 3-D printing. Anyone that knew Victoria, knows that she loved to question anybody’s authority. She was a beloved daughter, mother, and grandmother and there was nothing she enjoyed more than spending time with her family, especially her grandsons.

Victoria is survived by: her daughter, Reghan O’neal and her partner, Daniel Simmons, who Victoria saw as a son; parents, Michael and Patricia O’neal; grandsons, Ryden O’neal and Dorian Simmons; brothers, Matthew, Jason, and Shaun O’neal; sisters, Taryn O’neal and Bethany Guerrero; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: both her O’neal grandparents and Patterson grandparents.

Cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time. Services will be announced on social media at a later date.

Jewelene A. Cole, 61, passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, KS. She was born June 18, 1961 in Elkhart, IN to Dorothy (Miller) Moorehead.

Jewelene attended Sebring High School in Sebring, FL and graduated in 1979. She then attended McPherson College. She also met the love of her life in McPherson and married Robert E. Cole on July 6, 1985 in Sebring, FL. Jewelene was a member of the Community Church of the Brethren and served as a deacon there for many years. Her favorite hobbies were crafting, painting, sewing, and camping.

Jewelene is survived by her husband, Robert of Hutchinson, KS; mother, Dotty Moorehead of Zephyrhills, FL; two sons, Ben (Kim) Cole and Eric Cole, both of Hutchinson, KS; daughter, Talia (Joshua) Menter of Lincoln, NE; brother Paul Anglemyer of Brandon, FL; and five grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Mia, Alexis, Levi, Evan, and Laurelin.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no services held at this time. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — HutchCC President Dr. Carter File notes that though there are some national concerns regarding credit loss, which is the inability to transfer from a community college to a four year institution and have those classes count, here in Kansas it is handled differently.

"In Kansas, we recognized years ago that this credit loss was a concern," File said. "The regents universities and the community colleges all work very closely together to achieve as seamless a transfer between the two institutions as possible. There are always going to be circumstances where a student may change a major, or they may change where they're going, that's going to create some kind of a credit loss. But, by and large, we've worked very hard, through advising and through other initiatives, to make sure that students don't lose credits when they transfer from a community college to a university."

This is assisted through the way classes are structured at HutchCC.

"We have a gen ed core we're working on right now, which is 32 to 35 credit hours that will transfer anywhere to any university in the state, or actually between community colleges," File said. "Those 35 credit hours will transfer and count towards those exact classes. We're also working on Transfer Kansas, which we sometimes refer to as the transfer and articulation agreement. That is a group of 114 classes that transfer among universities and community colleges, that will transfer as those courses to those universities, without any question. We're also working on what's called program to program articulation, especially for a limited number of programs where, let's just say it's an education major, the student could take the undergraduate, the freshman and sophomore classes at any community college and transfer in to the education major at any university and be junior status. All they would have to take are upper level classes. All of those are efforts to make sure that credit loss is minimized as much as possible."

The state's private colleges are also working on making transferring easier.

"Community colleges signed an agreement just this last fall with the independent colleges in this area, with the Kansas independent colleges," File said. "Essentially, what it says is, if you get an A.A. or an A.S. from a community college, an associates from a community college, you enter those colleges as junior status. As long as they are not classes you need for your major, you do not have to take any additional undergraduate classes. You take just junior and senior level classes."

It is important for students, if they are struggling in classes and need to change their major, to let their advisor know as soon as they possibly can, to mitigate the taking of classes that will not eventually help them reach graduation requirements.

File: HutchCC doing its best to make sure college credits transfer

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College livestock judging team wrapped up a successful spring with strong team and individual performances at three prestigious events.

The team visited the world-renowned Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Houston, TX; the North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest in West Lafayette, IN; and the Southeastern Livestock Expo in Montgomery, AL.

Junior College All-American Award; awarded to the top 15 individuals for the year based on academic achievement and success at our five major contests.

North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest – West Lafayette, IN

This is an all-encompassing event where students make live carcass predictions, evaluate wholesale and retail meat cuts in the cooler, and evaluate breeding livestock with the use of performance information. It is a three-part, two-day event involving livestock skills and basic math. The AG108 Class (Principles of Meat Evaluation/Meat Animal Team) applies what they learn in the classroom and in attending labs and practices outside of class to compete in the North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest that annually rotates between Purdue University and the University of Illinois as the host. This contest is primarily geared towards senior college and university teams that have access to meats labs and more facilities on their campuses. Therefore, junior college teams competing against these teams are typically at a disadvantage. Hutchinson Community College placed 3rd out of 12 teams, including being the highest placing two-year school/community college and beating several other four-year schools.

HutchCC Livestock Judging has strong spring

COLBY – After being walked off in extra innings in Game 1 on Thursday, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team jumped out fast in Game 2 to earn a Jayhawk West split in the first two games of a four-game series with the Colby Trojans.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/smith_justin_u248">Justin Smith</a>&nbsp;tossed five strong innings while&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/henderson_ryan_sab3">Ryan Henderson</a>&nbsp;and A.J. Mustow combined for seven RBIs as Hutchinson defeated Colby 8-3 in Game 1. The Blue Dragons scored a run in the seventh to force extra innings in Game 1, but lost 6-5 in nine innings in Game 1.

The Blue Dragons (28-26, 16-14) and Trojans (14-37, 6-24) play Games 3 and 4 of the final series of the regular season at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field. Sophomore Recognition ceremonies will take place between games.

Smith allowed single runs in the second and third innings to pull Colby within 4-2. But the Blue Dragons answered with back-to-back sacrifice flies from Mustow and Henderson t make it 6-2 after five innings. Henderson ripped a two-run single in the seventh for an 8-3 lead.

⚾ Blue Dragons rally for split with Colby

Jan Hannon Thomas, 81, The Highlands, passed away peacefully Oct. 22, 2022, at Hospice House- Hutchinson and is now home with the Lord and loved ones who went before her.&nbsp; She was born June 6, 1941, in Ft. Worth, TX, to Russell and Wanna Bee (Harris) Hannon.

Jan graduated from RL Paschal High School in Ft. Worth, TX, attended Christian College- Columbia, MO, and graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor’s in education.

On November 4, 1961, Jan married David Thomas in Ft. Worth, TX.&nbsp; They shared almost 61 years together.&nbsp; Dave worked for Sears which lead to the family moving frequently.&nbsp; Jan worked a variety of jobs and managed the home in every new town!&nbsp; Her all-time favorite job was working for the Chamber of Commerce in Derby, KS.&nbsp; She was active in the Hutchinson Women’s Christian Club, volunteered at Hospice House- Hutchinson for many years, played golf with the Hooters Night Golf group and gin rummy with Highland residents, was a part of a cancer support group and loved to travel, cook, go to casinos, be with family and friends and her pets. &nbsp;

Jan is survived by: her husband, David of Hutchinson; sons Scott (Janet) Thomas of Aubrey,TX, and Stephen Thomas of Hutchinson; daughter Lisa Thomas of Overland Park; grandchildren Jake (Sarah) Boyd, Amie Boyd, Seth Thomas, and Callie Thomas; and great-grandchildren Ryder, Norah, and Michael; and several nieces and nephews..

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Marianne.

Through the years, Jan’s unwavering warmth, sense of humor with a Texas accent and cheerfulness were a bright light to all who came to know her! Her love and dedication to family and friends will always be cherished.&nbsp; She will be greatly missed.

There will be a Celebration of Life honoring Jan Thomas at 11 a.m. on Saturday May 20, 2023, at The Cabin at Dillon Nature Center.&nbsp;

Beverly Kay Baker, 70, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, at her home in Inman. She was born June 10, 1952, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Donald F. and Doris L. Martin Phillips. She was a graduate of Nickerson High School and had gotten her business degree from Adale Hale Business College, Hutchinson.

Beverly had worked for Walmart for several years and most recently for Primetime Convenience Store in Inman for several years before retiring. She was a member of the Buhler Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Meinhardt, Tucson, AZ; a brother, Michael Bradford; 4 grandchildren; and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Hainkel and a granddaughter, Shania Elizabeth Baker.

Cremation is planned. A graveside service will take place at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 8, 2023, at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of Inman Funeral Home.

Robert ‘Bob’ Harold Plotner, 81, entered the Heavenly Kingdom on May 1, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; He was born May 10, 1941, in Thayer, KS, to Arthur William Plotner and Margretha Helena (Degenhardt) Plotner.

Bob was a 1960 graduate of Ingalls High School, Ingalls, KS, and attended Garden City Community College, Garden City, KS, until he had his first of two open heart surgeries at KU Medical Center. He was a semi truck driver for Gerber Oil Inc., Charleston, KS, hauling gas and diesel on many routes that included Hutchinson, KS, and Scott City, KS, for over 42 years. Along these many routes, he created many lifelong friends.

Bob married Sheryl Ann Murphy on August 18, 1968, in Stafford, KS.&nbsp; Sharing over 54 years of marriage, and a lifetime of memories.

One of his all time favorite activities was coaching his children’s sports teams.&nbsp; Bob made many lifetime connections through his coaching.&nbsp; He coached many winning teams spanning over years, and mentored many young individuals.&nbsp; Bob liked fishing and watching any kind of sports on television, especially Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs, and his KU Jayhawks. He spent many hours cheering on KU at&nbsp; Phog Allen Fieldhouse watching KU games with his family. Bob enjoyed adventuring with his lifelong friend, Vyrl, riding motorcycles to the east coast, west coast, Canada, and racing cars.&nbsp; He was “The Mechanic” and could often be found helping others, or working on a project car of his own.

He is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Sheryl A. Plotner of Charleston/South Hutchinson, KS; son from a previous marriage, Robert D. Plotner and wife of Larned, KS; son, Jason S. (Carolyn Wehe) Plotner of Cape Coral, FL; and a daughter, MeLisa Ann (Efrain) Gonzalez of Olathe, KS; and his two beloved granddaughters which he loved spending time and joking with, Sara Breann Gonzalez and Abby R. Gonzalez.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bob was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Donald Plotner and Gerald Plotner; and sister, Evelyn Woodall.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. with the family present at Elliott Mortuary. Friends are invited to sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2023, through Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Elliott Mortary. Cremation has taken place.

Robert ‘Bob’ Harold Plotner |1941-2023|

Four members of the 2022 Hutchinson Community College volleyball team have signed letters of intent to move onto four-year programs next season.

Setter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/serrano_andrea_m5cv">Andrea Serrano</a>&nbsp;has signed to play at Coppin State. Libero&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/harvey_morgan_2ssb">Morgan Harvey</a>&nbsp;will move on to the University of Charleston. Outside hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/connor_sophie_eb64">Sophie Connor</a>&nbsp;will play next season at University of Texas-Tyler. Middle blocker&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/penaflor_blondie_8wmm">Blondie Penaflor</a>&nbsp;has signed with Lander University.

The 2022 Blue Dragons finished 26-12 this past season, placing third in the Jayhawk Conference and made it to the semifinals of the Region VI Tournament.

With the signings of these four sophomores, Blue Dragon head coach Delice Downing has now moved up eight players to four-year programs in her first three seasons at Hutchinson.

ANDREA SERRANO Serrano is a 5-foot-6 two-year starter from Arecibo Puerto Rico.

She averaged 7.14 assists per set playing over her 66 matches as a Blue Dragon, primarily in a 6-2 offense but was efficient running a 5-1 when asked to.

Serrano was also a top threat from the service line with 68 career aces.

This past season, Serrano averaged 6.99 assists per set with 699 total assists and 40 service aces. Serrano also had 2.07 digs per set. Serrano was named all-KJCCC/all-Region VI in her sophomore season.

MORGAN HARVEY Harvey, a 5-8 sophomore from Hoyt, Kansas, made a big position change before her second season with the Blue Dragons, moving from right-side hitter to libero/defensive specialist, a move that shored up the Blue Dragon backline depth in 2022.

This past season, Harvey averaged 2.32 digs per set with 17 matches of 10 or more digs and a career-high 24 digs in a five-set victory over Colby.

As a freshman, Harvey hit .151 and averaged 1.54 kills per set. She added 50 total blocks as a right-side hitter. Harvey also had 44 career service aces.

SOPHIE CONNOR A 5-10 outside hitter from Derby, Kansas, Connor was one of the top offensive threats for the Blue Dragons in both of her seasons at Hutchinson.

Over her two-year career, Connor amassed 354 total kills and average 1.91 kills per set, hitting .164. She had 175 kills and a freshman and 179 kills in her sophomore season.

Connor made a big improvement in her blocking game in Year No. 2. Connor averaged 0.28 blocks per set as a freshman, but upped that average to 0.53 with 58 total blocks in her sophomore year. Connor also had 38 career service aces and 314 career digs.

BLONDIE PENAFLOR Penaflor is a 6-0 sophomore from Las Vegas. She, too, made a position change from a pin hitter to a middle in 2022.

This past season, the two-time all-KJCCC/all-Region VI performer, averaged 1.38 kills and 1.20 blocks per set. Penaflor was second in the KJCCC in blocks per set during her sophomore year.

Over 72 matches in her Blue Dragon career, Penaflor averaged 1.89 kills on .239 hitting and 0.90 blocks.

🏐 Four Blue Dragons sign with 4-year programs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mya Williams and Natalie Payne signed letters of intent Tuesday.

Williams finished her career at Hutchinson Community College as the program's second-leading scorer all-time (1,163 points). She came close to Kalani Purcell's all-time record of 1,176 career points.

Williams announced Tuesday that her next stop is Georgia State University in Atlanta. The Panthers finished last season 12-21.

Williams finished her Blue Dragon career with a program-best 17.6 points per game.

Natalie Payne announced she would be joining former Blue Dragon scoring leader Heather Robben.

Heather Hurt (née Robben) finished her Dragon career as the all-time points leader in 2010, before Jamie Patrick (1,098 points), Kalani Purcell (1,176) and Mya Williams (1,163) etched their names on the list.

Hurt played at Wichita State before becoming an assistant coach at East Central University (Ada, Oklahoma). Hurt was just named the new head coach of the Tigers after serving as the interim last season.

The Tigers are coming off an 11-16 campaign.

Payne averaged 4.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Hutchinson. She shot 43.3% from the field and 33.3% from distance last season.

Both Williams and Payne cited coaches and team size as the perfect fit for their new destinations.

👟 Hutch to host NJCAA championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the third year, Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, Hutchinson Community College, USD 308 and Greater Hutch, an Economic Development Partnership for Reno County, are collaborating to host Signing Day on Thursday, May 4th at HC&amp;TEA.

Just as the community values athletes who commit to play a college sport, the signing day ceremony is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field and emphasize the importance of their career choice. 

On the day of the event, high school students, parents, instructors, administration, counselors, industry partners, potential employers, local and government officials will celebrate as students join their peers to commit to their future technical program pathway of choice.

The ceremony will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. with an employer fair from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
