HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager, there is one polling place change for Tuesday Hutchinson residents will want to know about.

"For those in the city who vote at the fairgrounds, we have changed buildings," Fager said. "We're gonna be at the Sunflower North and the Sunflower South building. So precincts one through 18 will vote at Sunflower South, and 19 through 35 will vote at Sunflower North. We'll also have greeters there and everything, so if you get turned around, we can definitely get you directed to the correct location."

Early voting has gone well through the beginning of the day Monday.&nbsp;

"So far, we've had 1,200 early vote, and we've sent out about 800 mail ballots," Fager said.

Early voting closed at noon Monday. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

We will sell raffle tickets online through Sunday, Aug. 11 at 5 p.m."

The first five keys will be drawn live on KWBW on Monday the 12th in the 7:45 a.m. segment of the morning show.

Raffle ongoing for vehicle for Hospice

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the news on Friday that the national unemployment rate is up again to 4.3%, the highest since 2021, the ripples of that are being felt across the Midwest.&nbsp;

"We can say pretty safely that this U.S. economy and the Mid-American economy is slowing down fairly significantly," said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss prior to the release. "The manufacturing sector in Kansas is moving sideways to a bit down."

Goss previously has said that the rate of increasing debt in the federal government is not sustainable. It's also important to note that the government pays a higher rate on its debt when overall rates are higher.

"That is the big elephant there in the room, and that's the interest payments on the debt, which is now greater than the military budget," Goss said.&nbsp; "We're talking about over a trillion dollars spending for our own interest, and the rates are going to be elevated for some time."

The Federal Reserve plans to cut interest rates at its September meeting, and Goss believes they will do so a second time in the fourth quarter of 2024.

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council will hold a public hearing on the upcoming 2025 budget Tuesday, Aug. 13.

The total budget is $2,346,911 for City and Rec Commission on $358,409 of ad valorem collections.

The City mill levy is 39.427; with the Recreation Commission at 1.390.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Grace Episcopal Church in Hutchinson is inviting artists to create a piece that tells the story of Jesus’ last days and crucifixion to be displayed during the Lenten season in early 2025.

A special exhibit opening will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the church, where the public will be invited to see the art and enjoy wine and cheese. The art will then be moved into the sanctuary to serve as focal points during Stations of the Cross, which are special services held each Friday evening at the church. Again, the public will be invited. The art will be exhibited until Lent comes to a close on April 20th.

The deadline to register your intention to participate is Saturday, August 31, 2024. The deadline to deliver the ready-to-display art to Grace Episcopal Church and to provide your brief biography and written reflection is Friday, February 7, 2025.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For individuals with a desire to volunteer paired with a love of Reno County, Hutchinson Community Foundation offers opportunities to serve.

The community foundation seeks volunteers for the following:

The board of directors and various standing committees meet monthly or every other month throughout the year to provide expertise and guidance to the organization and its initiatives.

The Changemakers at Work Grants Committee is responsible for reviewing and awarding project proposals from area nonprofit organizations seeking Changemakers at Work grants. Grants range from $200 to $5,000 and are awarded annually to projects that bring people together, build on community assets, and enhance community pride and identity. The 2024 committee will meet four times in the fall. 

The Youth Philanthropy Council is made up of Reno County high school students who learn about the community while working alongside each other to evaluate project proposals and award $5,000 in grants to youth-serving organizations. The council meets in the fall and winter.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ad Astra Kansas Foundation will hold its annual Galaxy Forum on Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Kansas Cosmosphere. The forum will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will have several speakers with ties to Kansas talking about their experiences with science and space.&nbsp;

The headline speaker is Mallory Jennings, an EVA Operation Lead Engineer for ISS EVA  working with Extravehicular Activity (EVA). Jennings is the primary engineer overseeing all hardware used on a spacewalk (suits, tools, batteries, jetpack, etc.). She is a native of Goddard, and graduated from Goddard High School in 2005 and Wichita State University in 2010.&nbsp;

The Wichita State University SUITS (Spacesuits User Interface Technologies for Students) design challenge team will also be present. The purpose of this team is to develop innovative user interfaces with an augmented reality (AR) head-mounted display (HMD), simulating an astronaut helmet.

Two other guests that are scheduled to be present include Steve Durst, an Ad Astra board member, as well as Jeanette Bosch, a NASA Solar System Ambassador (SSA). Bosch is originally from Dresden, Kan.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are asked to register in advance at <a href="mailto:contact@adastra-ks.org">contact@adastra-ks.org</a>. If you are unable to email, you may also register the day of the event at the Cosmosphere.

Attendees will receive a free pass to the Cosmosphere Hall of Space Museum for the day. Teachers will earn two hours of continuing education credit with attendance, as well.

Ad Astra Kansas Foundation to host Galaxy Forum Aug. 24

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Dave Bohnenblust has filed and is running for McPherson County’s District 2 Commissioner position.&nbsp; District 2 encompasses the townships of McPherson, Canton, Spring Valley, Meridian, and Ward 1 of McPherson.&nbsp;&nbsp; Bohnenblust is running unopposed for the position.

Current Commissioner, Tom Kueser is not seeking reelection which left the seat open this election cycle.&nbsp; Kueser, President of the State Bank of Canton, has served as County Commissioner for District 2 since 2019.&nbsp; He was appointed by the Republican Precinct Committee in April of 2019 and was Elected to serve in this role in 2020.&nbsp; 

Kueser stated that he never thought of himself as an elected official, but as Public Servant.&nbsp; “I will truly miss the connection that I have formed with the community during my time of service.&nbsp; I want to thank each of you for your input and for your ability to make McPherson County a Beacon for all others to look towards.&nbsp; I also want to thank you for the trust that you put into me during this journey.&nbsp; God continues to bless my family and McPherson County in so many ways.&nbsp; The best part of the job was being able to make a difference when asked or when I saw the need.&nbsp; It was always my intent to keep government small, but very effective and efficient.&nbsp; I sincerely thank you all for the support and prayers over the years.&nbsp; This ride we have shared together is something I will always cherish and never forget.&nbsp; Thank you and God Bless you all.”

Bohnenblust was born and raised in McPherson and has lived here for 50 of his 65 years.&nbsp;&nbsp; He graduated from McPherson High School, Kansas State University (Civil Engineering and Business Management) and UT (MBA).&nbsp;&nbsp;Dave is married to his high school sweetheart, Mary (Stucky).&nbsp; They have 5 grown children and six grandchildren.&nbsp; “McPherson County has been good to me and my family," Bohnenblust said.&nbsp; "It’s been a great place to raise my family and it’s time for me give back and serve the people of McPherson County."&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

He is currently employed by KDOT as a district maintenance engineer overseeing transportation infrastructure and building maintenance issues in 22 counties.&nbsp;&nbsp; He served as McPherson County’s public works director for 3 years.&nbsp;&nbsp; “My work experience gives me the knowledge to make sure McPherson County has the infrastructure, equipment, staffing, roads and bridges that the public expects.&nbsp; My life experiences will make me be a good listener to hear the needs and concerns of the people.” &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bohnenblust also worked in engineering and management for NCRA (now CHS) and Williams Energy.&nbsp; “I have worked for several of the larger energy companies in the county.&nbsp; This helps me know what the McPherson county industries need from the county,” He commented.&nbsp; “My master’s in business and business background will help me evaluate the counties financial and budgetary issues.&nbsp; As Commissioner Kueser stated, I will strive to keep government small but effective and efficient.”&nbsp; He is a licensed professional engineer in 3 states (Kansas, Colorado, and Texas).&nbsp;&nbsp;

He has been endorsed by KFL PAC.&nbsp;&nbsp;

John Holthus is serving as his treasurer.

 </figure>Dave Bohnenblust for McPherson County CommissionMCPHERSON, Kan. — Dave Bohnenblust has filed and is running for McPherson County’s District 2 Commissioner position.&nbsp; District 2 encompasses the townships of McPherson, Canton, Spring Valley, Meridian, and Ward 1 of McPherson.&nbsp;&nbsp; Bohnenblust is running unopposed for the position.Current Commissioner, Tom Kueser is not seeking reelection which left the seat open this election cycle.&nbsp; Kueser, President of the State Bank of Canton, has served as County Commissioner for District 2 since 2019.&nbsp; He was appointed by the Republican Precinct Committee in April of 2019 and was Elected to serve in this role in 2020.&nbsp; Kueser stated that he never thought of himself as an elected official, but as Public Servant.&nbsp; “I will truly miss the connection that I have formed with the community during my time of service.&nbsp; I want to thank each of you for your input and for your ability to make McPherson County a Beacon for all others to look towards.&nbsp; I also want to thank you for the trust that you put into me during this journey.&nbsp; God continues to bless my family and McPherson County in so many ways.&nbsp; The best part of the job was being able to make a difference when asked or when I saw the need.&nbsp; It was always my intent to keep government small, but very effective and efficient.&nbsp; I sincerely thank you all for the support and prayers over the years.&nbsp; This ride we have shared together is something I will always cherish and never forget.&nbsp; Thank you and God Bless you all.”Bohnenblust was born and raised in McPherson and has lived here for 50 of his 65 years.&nbsp;&nbsp; He graduated from McPherson High School, Kansas State University (Civil Engineering and Business Management) and UT (MBA).&nbsp;&nbsp;Dave is married to his high school sweetheart, Mary (Stucky).&nbsp; They have 5 grown children and six grandchildren.&nbsp; “McPherson County has been good to me and my family," Bohnenblust said.&nbsp; "It’s been a great place to raise my family and it’s time for me give back and serve the people of McPherson County."&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;He is currently employed by KDOT as a district maintenance engineer overseeing transportation infrastructure and building maintenance issues in 22 counties.&nbsp;&nbsp; He served as McPherson County’s public works director for 3 years.&nbsp;&nbsp; “My work experience gives me the knowledge to make sure McPherson County has the infrastructure, equipment, staffing, roads and bridges that the public expects.&nbsp; My life experiences will make me be a good listener to hear the needs and concerns of the people.” &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bohnenblust also worked in engineering and management for NCRA (now CHS) and Williams Energy.&nbsp; “I have worked for several of the larger energy companies in the county.&nbsp; This helps me know what the McPherson county industries need from the county,” He commented.&nbsp; “My master’s in business and business background will help me evaluate the counties financial and budgetary issues.&nbsp; As Commissioner Kueser stated, I will strive to keep government small but effective and efficient.”&nbsp; He is a licensed professional engineer in 3 states (Kansas, Colorado, and Texas).&nbsp;&nbsp;He has been endorsed by KFL PAC.&nbsp;&nbsp;John Holthus is serving as his treasurer.<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/5e73b532afae0f4d5f5d90ea">CLICK HERE&nbsp;to sign up for the daily Hutch Post email news update.</a>

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Brett Berry has made a name for himself over the past few weeks, including on Saturday night at SaltCity Racing at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. The Hays native claimed his third title in the IMCA Modified in a one-week stretch.

Berry won the checkered flag at Dodge City Raceway Park last Saturday, then it was Friday night at Salina Speedway, and Saturday at SaltCity Racing. The win for Berry on Saturday marked his 11th win of the season.

Troy Gemmill from Ponca City, Okla., finished in second place behind Berry. Hutch natives Jake Nightingale and Peyton Burkhart finished 3-4.

Mike Petersilie picked up the win in IMCA Stock Car Feature. The win is his second of the year, with both coming at SaltCity Racing. Petersilie claimed the IMCA Stock Car Feature in Hutch on June 21. The Hoisington native placed fourth on Friday night in La Crosse in the Super Late Models Feature race.&nbsp;

Cleo Adams from Oklahoma City finished second behind Petersilie. Adams moved up 12 spots throughout the race to make up the most ground of any competitor. Hutch native Scott Miller placed third.

Tyler Nerud made the trip down from Dorchester, Neb. to win the IMCA Northern SportMod Feature. The win Saturday is the 10th of the season for Nerud.&nbsp;

Salina native Warren Huffman finished second, while Jimmy Brozek from Stafford took third.&nbsp;

The final race of the night saw Dusty Leonard from Marysville win the Dirt Super Late Models Feature. Leonard had the top qualifying time from the heats, and proved to be the top racer from start to finish in the feature. The win for Leonard is his third of the season.&nbsp;

Dan Smith from Beloit took second, while Delbert Smith from Wichita placed third.

Berry wins IMCA Modified at SaltCity Racing for third win this week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to Hutchinson Public Works Director Brian Clennan, Severance Street will be back open next week. 

He said in an email to Hutch Post that the plan is to reopen the street at the end of the day on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

A water line broke and the repair work done in July involved replacement of the water line under Severance Street between 17th Avenue and 23rd Avenue.

For updates and further information regarding the repair work, residents can contact the city directly at 620-694-1900.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's another night of racing Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

"I'm excited for Saturday night," said Phil Nightingale with Salt City Racing. "We've got some good classes coming up. We got the late models coming back, so it's big cars with big wide tires that go pretty fast, and we got A mods, we got B mods, and stock cars, so it should be an exciting night, Saturday night."

Hutch is the only half-mile in the High Plains Late Model series.

"They are really fast cars," Nightingale said. "That really helps them a lot, they're a lightweight car, but they also got those big wide tires that can help them pull them into corners."

Nightingale plans to get 2025 dates to the Fair Board next week and he wants a long-term deal so he can put more investment into the facility.

"Yes, I will not go back with a one year deal," Nightingale said. "That won't work for keeping it there. There's so many things I want to do to that racetrack. I can't invest money and things into that racetrack for a one year contract. We got to get a multi year deal to keep this thing moving forward."

Races again Saturday at Fairgrounds

WICHITA, Kan. — The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) will hold a virtual media day for the 2024 football season on Friday morning starting at 10 a.m.

The event will be broadcast on Facebook Live by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/kcacsports">clicking here</a>.

Media members and fans will have the opportunity to ask questions through the comments section on the live stream.&nbsp;

The 12 member schools that make up the KCAC for football include: Avila, Bethany, Bethel, Evangel, Friends, Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, Saint Mary, Southwestern, Sterling and Tabor.

The 12 schools are divided into two divisions, the Dr. Ted Kessinger Division and the Franklin "Gene" Bissell Division.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After the decision following a public hearing Monday by the Reno County Planning Commission to send the Board of County Commissioners a recommendation not to ban solar in the zoned areas of Reno County, the Board of County Commissioners is going to give itself some time to look at the record before making a final decision.

The board plans to have a study session on the solar topic on Sept. 11 and then an agenda item on that same topic on Sept. 25. 

The board wanted to have both Public Works Director Don Brittain and County Planner Mark Vonachen available for questions and both are not available either one meeting day or the other in August, so the commission is pushing the decision out to give itself more time to read the record as entered at the planning commission and then hash it out through September.

County commission to take up solar in Sept.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said consumer debt is a problem that is getting bigger as prices have risen, even though they are doing so more slowly than they were.

"Those credit card balances are up to record levels, even paying over 20% interest rates on the balances you carry forward," Goss said. "We're seeing this economy right now. We've got the top 20% doing reasonably well, the bottom 80% not so well, and that's where we're getting the hit right now, but as you say, the federal government has been spending, and that's where they've pushed the economy forward. Of course, now the Fed is going to have to pull back some, reining in that, but now they've decided, well, now we've gone too far. We've got to cool it. Let's cut the interest rate now."

"A quarter percent cut at their meeting on September the 18th is not going to be that big a deal," Goss said. "A second cut, I expect, in 2024, so I expect two rate cuts this year from the Federal Reserve."

There is one thing both major party presidential candidates have in common.

"We're going to see more spending," Goss said. "The question is, how do you pay for it? Probably the Democrats would be more likely to raise taxes, and of course, that would have some negative impacts on the economy. The Republicans are more likely to do other factors, not raising taxes, but increasing the debt. So, you got a little bit of bad for both parties. They're offering solutions that are not very tasteful for the average taxpayer and average worker out there."

Fed chair Jerome Powell said a rate cut at the September meeting would be unrelated to the upcoming presidential election.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Rotary Club of Hutchinson will hold its next meeting Monday, August 5th at noon at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. The public is invited to attend.

Our speaker will be Elizabeth Vieyra.  She serves as the Missionary and US Administrator for Ripples from the Well, a non-profit organization dedicated to caring for vulnerable children and cultivating self-sufficient communities in Jinja, Uganda. Liz brings a wealth of experience from her background as an elementary school teacher in Hutchinson and her involvement in various non-profit initiatives.

Liz's journey is a testament to the power of divine calling and commitment. At just 13 years old, she felt a profound calling to serve in Africa. This dream became a reality in 2022 when she visited Uganda for the first time, two decades after her initial calling. Leaving behind a full-time teaching career, Liz embraced her vocation to serve God's purpose, focusing her efforts on the children in Uganda.
