HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dr. Temple Grandin will present the final Dillon Lecture of the 2023 season when she appears at the Hutchinson Sports Arena on Tuesday, October 31 at 10:30 am.

Dr. Grandin has shaped her career around the research and understanding of animal behavior and stress through the lens of her own experiences navigating life with autism.

Dr. Grandin currently serves as a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, which honored her as a Distinguished Professor in 2022, where she teaches courses on livestock behavior and facility design.

Throughout her life’s work, Dr. Grandin has pioneered the design of livestock handling facilities with modern methods that improve animal welfare and productivity. Dr. Grandin continues to help more than half of the cattle in North America today through the use of her groundbreaking animal handling technology. Facilities she has designed can be seen in the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and more. Dr. Grandin has authored over 400 articles in both scientific journals and livestock periodicals on animal handling, welfare, and facility design.

A prominent author and speaker on both autism and animal behavior, Dr. Grandin has also written more than a dozen books, including Thinking in Pictures, Livestock Handling and Transport, and The Autistic Brain, just to name a few. Her books Animals in Translation and Visual Thinking have been featured on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Tickets to the lecture will be available beginning at 9:45 am the day of the lecture at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Grandin will appear at a press conference for members of the media prior to the lecture. The press conference is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. in the Media Interview Room of the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Dr. Temple Grandin to present Dillon Lecture

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Four employees from EAGLE Media of Hutchinson were recognized at the Station Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting at the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Convention in Overland Park on Oct. 23-24.&nbsp;

There were more than 300 entries in this year's competition. Staff members from the Hutch market took home awards in multimedia campaigns, sports broadcasting and promotions.&nbsp;

In the medium radio market, the following EAGLE employee-owners were honored:&nbsp;

Sports Director and on-air personality Glen Grunwald for KWBW 1450 AM and 98.5 FM received honorable mention for Sports Play-by-Play. Former Hutch High football coach Dan Naccarato assisted him on the broadcast.&nbsp;

Grunwald has worked with EAGLE for 31 years. He's won multiple awards for his work, which include the 2020 KSHSAA Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year and the 2017 Hod Humiston, with the KAB.

Digital Marketing Manager Ashley Weve placed first in Excellence in Multimedia/Digital Promotional Announcement. Weve was awarded for her United Way of Reno County/Reno Connections campaign. This was Weve's first submission with the KAB. The category was new in 2022.&nbsp;

The campaign involved video production, radio commercials on five different stations, Hutch Post ads, Facebook and Instagram ads, Geofencing, Google Performance Max ads and billboards.&nbsp;

Program Director for My 93-1 and PA Voice of the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons, Daren Dunn, placed second for Best Morning Show. 

Dunn also placed second in the Sports Feature for Countdown To Kickoff, the pregame show for Blue Dragon Football.

He placed first in each category previously, winning Sports Feature in 2021 and Morning Show in 2022.&nbsp;

Operations Manager and Morning host for Country 102.9, Pat James, placed first in Station Promotion Announcement. James' promotional announcement included a call to the winner of a furnace through a station-sponsored competition with TimeSaver Home Services.&nbsp;

EAGLE Media Hutch employees bring home KAB awards

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — ESSDACK welcomed over 5,000 students from over 100 Kansas school districts at the 6th annual Career Expo hosted at the Kansas State Fairgrounds October 23-24.&nbsp;

High school students engaged with 230 exhibitors including colleges, businesses and public service. The Career Expo gives businesses the opportunity to advise students directly, address the shortage of qualified employees, and align highschool expectations with industry needs.

"ESSDACK created this event to help students understand their career options after high school and the skills required for high-wage, high-demand jobs,” said Bryan Rohling, Career Expo project lead. “Unlike your typical college or job fair, we've brought employers and colleges together to inform students about all of their options, right here in Kansas."

The most popular booths had interactive, hands-on activities for students. Students were able to touch diseased organs from Emporia State University, test their strength for the Kansas Army National Guard, check out a food truck from Flint Hills Technical College, and test their virtual welding skills with Pratt Community College. ESSDACK appreciates the hard work all of the exhibitors put into their booth spaces.

“Our motto for this event is ‘students cannot be what they cannot see,’” said Joni Clark-Leiker, Career Expo teacher/student liaison. “We created activities for students to complete before, during and after the event to ensure they had the best experience possible.”

Students traveled from all over the state to attend the Career Expo, some traveled over 3 hours to get to the fairgrounds.&nbsp;

“We were very excited so many small, rural school districts decided to participate,” said Clark-Leiker. “We want all high school students to experience what career opportunities are available in Kansas.”

ESSDACK Career Expo welcomes thousands

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-Because of the high potential of cold and wet weather on Sunday, the Hutchinson Community College Athletic Department has moved the Blue Dragon women's soccer team's opening-round Region VI Tournament game has been rescheduled.

The fourth-seeded Blue Dragons (12-4-3) will play host to fifth-seeded Butler (9-5-5) at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The game was originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, but the forecast for then is 38 degrees with better than a 50-percent chance of rain and potentially and rain-snow mix.

The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 5:55 p.m.

The Hutchinson/Butler winner will play the Barton/Coffeyville winner on Thursday November 2 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

⚽ Dragons' Region VI Soccer matchup moved to Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-Playing at home for the first time in three weeks, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team rallied from down one set to defeat the Garden City Broncbusters in five sets on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons posted season highs for kills and digs in defeating Garden City 23-25,25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 15-3 on Sophomore Recognition Night.

Hutchinson improved to 23-13 overall and remained in second place in the KJCCC at 10-4. The Blue Dragons travel to first-place Barton at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in Great Bend. Garden City dropped to 18-12 overall and 8-8 in the league.

The Blue Dragons are now 5-3 in five-set matches this season.

Sophomore outside hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/golden_taniya_wjj0">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;led the Blue Dragons with her 18th double-double of the season. She had a match-up 18 kills on .218 hitting with a career-high 21 digs. Now with 510 kills for the season, Golden moved into fifth place on the Blue Dragon single-season kills list. Her 929 career kills are the second most in program history.

Sophomore setter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/ravenhani_giovanna_k9db">Giovanna Ravanhani</a>&nbsp;had 42 assists and had her eighth double-double of the season with 12 digs. Ravanhani had seven kills on .389 hitting. Ravanhani is now eighth on the Blue Dragon season assist list with 1,152 and eighth on the career assist list with 1,551 assists.

Sophomore middle&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/dean_anna_0g77">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;had 10 kills on .276 hitting. She had three blocks, four digs and a career-high five set assists. Dean moved into the career Top 10 in total blocks with 224 blocks. Her 149 season blocks rank 15th on the single-season list.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/long_ashlyn_ig40">Ashlyn Long</a>&nbsp;finished with nine kills.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/briseno_alejandra_xati">Alejandra Briseno</a>&nbsp;had six kills and six digs.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/murphy_mckenzie_k4jq">McKenzie Murphy</a>&nbsp;had six kills and four blocks.

The Blue Dragons had 61 total kills, the second-highest total this season and finished hitting .188. The Dragons had 7.5 team blocks, a season-high 95 digs and two service aces.

The Dragon defense raised its game in the final two set. Hutchinson had 31 digs over the final two sets and 4.5 blocks in the fifth set alone. The Blue Dragons held Garden City to .003 hitting in the final two sets.

Freshman libero&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/rollandini_isabella_ircy">Isabella Rollandini</a>&nbsp;had a career-high 29 digs. Freshman Cataline Arce had eight digs and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/vontress_jaidynee_y3l8">Jaidynee Vontress</a>&nbsp;had seven digs.

Set 1: The opening set featured 13 ties and five lead changes. Golden had five kills to lead the Dragons, but Garden City countered with five kills each from Appolline Lepuissant and Julia Brazil. A Golden kill tied the set at 10-all. Leading 15-14, the Dragons scored three straight to build an 18-14 lead. Garden City answered back with a 5-1 run and tied the set at 19-all after a Hutchinson attack error. Tied at 21, Garden City took a two-point lead, but a service error and attack error helped the Dragons tie the set at 23. The Busters took the set 25-23.

Set 2: The Blue Dragons out-hit Garden City .234-.045 in the second set. Tied at 5-all, a Murphy kill gave the Dragons the lead for good. A Buster attack error bumped the Dragon lead to 12-9. A Dean kill bumped the Hutchinson lead to 17-11. The Blue Dragons sided out on 16 of 19 chances in the second set. Leading 22-18, an Arce service ace upped the lead to five. Then Ravanhani had a setter dump on match point to give the Dragons a 25-19 victory and knot the match at a set each.

Set 3: Garden City got its offense untracked in the third set. The Busters had 17 kills on .306 hitting in the third set while the Dragons had 14 kills on .200 hitting. The Dragons took an 11-9 lead after a Golden kill. Garden City fought back and led 18-15 after a Tola Maczka ace. Trailing 20-16, a Ravanhani kill slowed the Buster roll, but Garden City took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-18 set victory.

Set 4: The Dragon defense started to take command of the match in the fourth set, bringing up 20 digs in the fourth set alone. Rollandini had eight digs in the set. The Dragons jumped out to a 4-1 lead after a Murphy kill. Leading 9-7, the Dragons went on a 7-0 Rollandini service run to build a 16-7 lead. Garden City hit negative .049 in the fourth set. Hutchinson led 24-16. Garden fought off two set points, but Golden had a kill on the third for a 25-18 win to tie the match at 2-2.

Set 5: The Dragons had an early 3-1 run, but the Busters scored four straight to take a 5-3 lead A Golden kill stopped that run and Garden City maintained the lead through the crossover leading the Dragons 8-6. Hutchinson scored four-straight points with two Briseno kills and a Dean kill to lead 10-8. Tied at 11-all, kills by Briseno and Dean gave the Dragons a 13-11 lead and forced a Garden City timeout. The teams sided out on the final four rallies. The Dragons closed out the match with a Golden kill for a 5-13 set lead.

The Blue Dragons travel to first-place Barton at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in Great Bend. Garden City dropped to 18-12 overall and 8-8 in the league.The Blue Dragons are now 5-3 in five-set matches this season.Sophomore outside hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/golden_taniya_wjj0">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;led the Blue Dragons with her 18th double-double of the season. She had a match-up 18 kills on .218 hitting with a career-high 21 digs. Now with 510 kills for the season, Golden moved into fifth place on the Blue Dragon single-season kills list. Her 929 career kills are the second most in program history.Sophomore setter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/ravenhani_giovanna_k9db">Giovanna Ravanhani</a>&nbsp;had 42 assists and had her eighth double-double of the season with 12 digs. Ravanhani had seven kills on .389 hitting. Ravanhani is now eighth on the Blue Dragon season assist list with 1,152 and eighth on the career assist list with 1,551 assists.Sophomore middle&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/dean_anna_0g77">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;had 10 kills on .276 hitting. She had three blocks, four digs and a career-high five set assists. Dean moved into the career Top 10 in total blocks with 224 blocks. Hutchinson had 31 digs over the final two sets and 4.5 blocks in the fifth set alone. Golden had five kills to lead the Dragons, but Garden City countered with five kills each from Appolline Lepuissant and Julia Brazil. A Golden kill tied the set at 10-all. Leading 15-14, the Dragons scored three straight to build an 18-14 lead. Garden City answered back with a 5-1 run and tied the set at 19-all after a Hutchinson attack error. Tied at 21, Garden City took a two-point lead, but a service error and attack error helped the Dragons tie the set at 23. The Busters took the set 25-23.Set 2: The Blue Dragons out-hit Garden City .234-.045 in the second set. Tied at 5-all, a Murphy kill gave the Dragons the lead for good. A Buster attack error bumped the Dragon lead to 12-9. A Dean kill bumped the Hutchinson lead to 17-11. The Blue Dragons sided out on 16 of 19 chances in the second set. Leading 22-18, an Arce service ace upped the lead to five. Then Ravanhani had a setter dump on match point to give the Dragons a 25-19 victory and knot the match at a set each.Set 3: Garden City got its offense untracked in the third set. The Busters had 17 kills on .306 hitting in the third set while the Dragons had 14 kills on .200 hitting. The Dragons took an 11-9 lead after a Golden kill. Garden City fought back and led 18-15 after a Tola Maczka ace. Trailing 20-16, a Ravanhani kill slowed the Buster roll, but Garden City took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-18 set victory.Set 4: The Dragon defense started to take command of the match in the fourth set, bringing up 20 digs in the fourth set alone. Rollandini had eight digs in the set. The Dragons jumped out to a 4-1 lead after a Murphy kill. Leading 9-7, the Dragons went on a 7-0 Rollandini service run to build a 16-7 lead. Garden City hit negative .049 in the fourth set. Hutchinson led 24-16. Garden fought off two set points, but Golden had a kill on the third for a 25-18 win to tie the match at 2-2.Set 5: The Dragons had an early 3-1 run, but the Busters scored four straight to take a 5-3 lead A Golden kill stopped that run and Garden City maintained the lead through the crossover leading the Dragons 8-6. Hutchinson scored four-straight points with two Briseno kills and a Dean kill to lead 10-8. Tied at 11-all, kills by Briseno and Dean gave the Dragons a 13-11 lead and forced a Garden City timeout. The teams sided out on the final four rallies. The Dragons closed out the match with a Golden kill for a 5-13 set lead.

Imogene Kinast, 89, died October 24, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born September 1, 1934, in Ellsworth, to William C. and Mathilda (Stratmann) Janssen.

Imogene graduated from Lorraine High School, and attended Kansas State University. &nbsp;She retired as a full-time administrative assistant at Hutchinson Community College in 1997. &nbsp;Imogene later worked for the Reno County District Court part-time, retiring in 2007. &nbsp;She liked the simple things in life like sewing, gardening, and volunteering at the Hutchinson Zoo. Imogene was a lifelong Lutheran, and currently a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

On June 4, 1954, she married Charles R. Kinast, in Holyrood, KS. &nbsp;He died April 2, 2020, after they shared almost 66 years of marriage.

Imogene is survived by: &nbsp;daughters, Vicki Shook (Timothy) of Wichita, Pamela Johnston (Randolph), and Laurie Givan (Tim), all of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: &nbsp;her parents; a sister, Agnes Scott; and a brother, Donald Janssen.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2023, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Henry Blickhahn officiating. &nbsp;Private family burial will take place prior to the service in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. &nbsp;Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Honor Flight is holding a fundraiser event on Saturday in Hutchinson.

"Red, White and Stew, it's going to be at the Stringer Fine Arts building at Hutchinson Community College," said John Hooker with Honor Flight. "It's from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the 28th. The public is welcome. Veterans eat free. If they bring their wife or significant other, we ask for a $7 donation."

Veteran Jeremy Ehart will speak and there will be a quilt raffle and a bake sale as well.&nbsp;The Kansas Honor Flight is an all-volunteer organization that works to honor Kansas Veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam Era Veterans by providing them with an a FREE 3 day trip to visit their memorials in Washington, D.C.  They also get to visit Arlington National Cemetery, Fort McHenry and several other memorials.

"When I came back from being overseas in Vietnam, we did not receive the welcome that those from other wars had received," said Tom Angel with Honor Flight. "This is a way of kind of making up and giving us closure on what we missed out on. The experience is something that, it's very hard to describe. I was somewhat hesitant in the beginning on going, but now that I've gone, any Veteran should go and see the memorials that have been erected for them."

Kansas Honor Flight has been able to send thousands of Veterans to Washington, D.C.

"3,865 Veterans have taken this flight," Angel said. "The Veteran, the cost to the Veteran is nothing. We see a lot of father-son, father-granddaughter, taking their grandparents along. The smiles on their faces, when they see how their Veteran lights up. It's a three-day experience they'll remember the rest of their life."

The flight is chartered from Wichita to Baltimore, so you don't need to worry about the flight being canceled or delayed. Honor Flights happen four times a year.

Kansas Honor Flight holding Saturday event

HOBBS, New Mexico — The No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team closed out the fall season on Tuesday with an eighth-place showing at the NJCAA National Preview.&nbsp;

Playing on the same course – Rockwood Community Links in Hobbs, New Mexico – as the 2024 NJCAA Division I Championships, the Blue Dragons shot a combined 17-over 869 over the last two days.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons had rounds of 291 and 292 on Monday before posting a 286 on Tuesday to close out the tournament. &nbsp;

Hutchinson finished 14 strokes off the pace of team champion Odessa (282-292-281), which won the tournament by two strokes with a 54-hole team score of 855. Runner-up Dodge City shot an 857 and Midland finished third at 869.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons had two players finish in the individual Top 20. &nbsp;

Redshirt freshman Louis Ross was the only Blue Dragon to finish in the individual Top 20. Ross tied for 11th with a 1-over 214 on the par-71 course. Ross had rounds of 70 and 72 on Monday and closed with a 72 on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Sophomore Marco Anderson, who played as an individual player, tied for 21st overall. Anderson shot 216 after arounds of 75, a career-low 69 and a 72.&nbsp;

Freshman Micah Blowers tied for 26th at 217. Blowers carded rounds of 73, 73 and 71.&nbsp;

Sophomore Louis Galvin tied for 30th at 218. He posted rounds of 75, 72 and 71.&nbsp;

Freshman David Razinskas finished tied for 48th at 222. Razinskas had rounds of 73, 75 and 74.&nbsp;

Freshman Charlie Box tied for 67th with a 54-hole score of 225. Box had rounds of 76 and 77 on Monday and rebounded with a 72 on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Community College sophomore Daniel Brown was named the Jayhawk Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week for this second time this season after another impressive performance in last Saturday’s 27-18 victory by the No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons over Garden City at Gowans Stadium.&nbsp;

Brown improved his nation-leading quarterback sack total to 13 with three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss against the Busters.&nbsp;

Brown finished with six total tackles, including five solo stops. Brown has had eight sacks in the last three games. He leads the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss.&nbsp;

Brown is the fourth Blue Dragon to be named the conference’s player of the week. Jordan Scruggs and Ryan Nolan have each won the award once this season. Brown is the 13th overall Blue Dragon to earn weekly conference honors.&nbsp;

Brody Alan Kappel, 30, died October 21, 2023, in McPherson. He was born July 8, 1993, in Hutchinson, to Johnny Dwayne and Diana Leigh (Hall) Kappel.

Brody graduated from Buhler High School in 2011 and he attended Hutchinson Community College and Central Christian College in McPherson. He was the Director of Technology for New Hope Evangelical Church, McPherson.

Brody had a passion for technology and enjoyed working with any type of electronic. He was an animal lover, especially when it came to his cat.

Brody is survived by: his mom, Diana (Cavin) Lambert of Hutchinson; sisters, Michelle (Jason) Parrish of Hutchinson and Sara (Sam) Bookless of Omaha; nieces Scarlett and Stella of Omaha; step brothers, Jeff (Sara) Lambert of Dodge City and James Waggoner of Wichita.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents, Don and Mary Hall.

Jerry graduated from Hutchinson High School and attended Hutchinson Community College where she received her associate’s degree. She went on to attend Emporia State University and then finished her undergraduate degree in teaching at Washburn University.

Jerry was heavily involved in the Hutchinson High School drum and bugle corp marching band and a Member of the 1960 and 1961 National championship Junior College Debate Team through Hutchinson Community College. Jerry was a volunteer for the Reno County Cancer Society and New Life Christian Church for many years. She was a member of New Life Christian Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Silver Leaf Chapter # 464.

Jerry was preceded in death by her father, Cleon Rogers; mother, Geraldine Hood and Geraldine’s husband, William (Bill) Hood.

She is survived by her three daughters, Sarah (Daren) Fankhauser, Amy (Milt) Mounts and Dana (Jamie) Rice; and six grandchildren, Lauren Koehler, Maddie Fankhauser, Lindsey Fankhauser, Alec Koehler, Colby Rice and Grant Rice.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2023, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS with Pastor John Frey officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with no family present and from 10:00 a.m. to service time with family present on Friday at the funeral chapel. Burial will take place in Fairlawn Cemetery, Hutchinson, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Wesley Towers or New Life Christian Church and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.

The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team suffered a drop of five spots in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Rankings, which were released on Monday.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons dropped a 1-0 decision to now-No. 11 Kansas City on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. The Blue Dragons, now 12-3-3 overall, suffered a 4-2 loss to No. 17 Cowley on Monday after the rankings came out.&nbsp;

Now ranked in 14 consecutive rankings periods, that ties for the second-longest run in the polls in team history.&nbsp;

Five Jayhawk Conference teams are ranked in this week’s rankings led by KJCCC Champion Barton at No. 8. Kansas City is No. 11, Hutchinson is No. 16, Cowley No. 17 and Barton No. 18.&nbsp;

Iowa Western remains the No. 1 team in the poll with all seven first-place votes. Seminole State remains No. 2 and Tyler remains No. 3. Salt Lake jumps up to No. 4 and Monroe Community College is No. 5.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons’ next game will be the Region VI Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday. Pairings will be released on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Community College football team remains atop the latest NJCAA Division I Football Rankings, released on Monday.&nbsp;

Now 7-0 after a 27-18 home victory over Garden City on Saturday at Gowans Stadium, the Blue Dragons received 9 of 10 first-place votes with No 2 Iowa Western getting the other. The Blue Dragons maintain a 149-141 lead over the Reivers.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons have now been ranked in 25 consecutive ranking periods.&nbsp;

With the victory, the Blue Dragons start a season 7-0 for the eighth time in program history.&nbsp;

Kilgore maintained the No. 3 spot with a 37-17 win over previous No. 4 Trinity Valley. Jones and Snow move up one spot each to Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons travel to Highland for a Noon kickoff on Saturday in Highland.&nbsp;

Dodge City jumped into the Top 10, jumping up four spots. Butler dropped from No. 7 to No. 13 after a loss to Iowa Western. Iowa Central dropped its second-straight game and fell to No. 14.

ARKANSAS CITY — The No. 16-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team couldn’t dig its way out of a pair of two-goal deficits on Monday as the Blue Dragons fell to No. 17 Cowley 4-2 on Monday at the Cowley Soccer Complex.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons finish the regular season 12-4-3 overall and finish fourth in the Jayhawk Conference with a 9-4-3 record (30 points). Cowley moved past the Blue Dragons into third place at 9-2-4 overall and 9-2-4 in league play (31 points). &nbsp;

Hutchinson will be the No. 4 overall seed for the upcoming Region VI Tournament. The Dragons will play at home on Sunday. Time and opponent should be released on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons were in catch-up mode from the first minute of the game. Cowley’s Lucia Rivas scored just 51 seconds into the game. &nbsp;

The Dragons had the equalizer in the 19th minute when Kaitlyn Edwards hammered home a cross from Tatiana Mayumi for her 13th goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1.&nbsp;

Cowley scored two more goals in the first half to lead 3-1 at halftime.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons immediately countered 41 seconds into the second half when Jayda Wyatt took a pass from Katharina Marx and sprinted toward the goal. Wyatt blistered a shot from 22 yards out to cut the Cowley lead to 3-2.&nbsp;

Six minutes later, the Tigers made it 4-2 on a Sara Espinoza goal in the 52nd minute.&nbsp;

Blue Dragon keeper Karsyn Slothower made eight saves in 12 shots faced. She had to face a penalty kick in the second half, but Cowley’s Lea Evin missed wide right.&nbsp;

Edwards has now scored goals in 4 of her last 5 games. Now with 89 saves for the season, Slothower moved into second place on the Blue Dragon single-season list for saves.&nbsp;

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team started the Dennis South Memorial Tournament with a win and a loss on Friday at Reiver Arena.

The Blue Dragons defeated Monroe College 25-19, 21-25, 29-27, 25-19 to open play on Friday. The Dragons then jumped out to a 2-0 lead on tournament host Iowa Western, but dropped a five-set nail-biter to the Reivers 25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 18-25, 13-15.

Now 21-13, the Blue Dragons play Missouri State-West Plains at 9 a.m. on Saturday to close out the tournament.

MONROE RECAPAfter the teams split the first two sets, the Blue Dragons held Monroe to .141 hitting over the final two sets and Hutchinson snapped a three-match losing streak with a four-set victory.

The Blue Dragons hit .218 for the match and out-blocked Monday 14-9.

Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/golden_taniya_wjj0">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/dean_anna_0g77">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;had 12 kills each to lead the Blue Dragons.

Coming off its second bye week of the season, the top-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team returns to action Saturday to meet the Garden City Broncbusters in a Jayhawk Conference showdown at 1 p.m. in Hutchinson's Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragons (6-0, 3-0 KJCCC) have won six games in a row to start the season, which ties for the eighth-best start to a season in program history. The Dragons have won 11 consecutive games in Gowans Stadium.

Two weeks ago, the Blue Dragons earned a 46-10 victory over No. 11 Dodge City, Hutchinson's fourth victory over a ranked opponent this season. Tied at 3-3 early in the second quarter, a safety started 23-point run over a span of 4 minutes, 22 seconds to take command of the game.

The Blue Dragons continue to lead the nation in scoring defense at 8.0 points per game allowed. The Dragons are No. 2 in the NJCAA in quarterback sacks.

The Blue Dragons have won four consecutive games against Garden City. Last season at Broncbuster Stadium, Hutchinson posted its second-largest margin of victory in series history over the Busters with a 65-7 victory.

🏈 HutchCC Blue Dragons Play Host to Garden City Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nancy Swain, current General Manager at EAGLE Media in Hutchinson, and future General Manager, Matt Althouse attended a lunch at Hutchinson Community College on Friday, October 20th&nbsp;to meet a group of Schmidt Foundation Scholarship recipients. 

These students were chosen to receive scholarships from the Schmidt Foundation through guidelines which include maintaining a great GPA.&nbsp;

“Bob and Pat Schmidt always enjoyed seeing young people succeed and their Foundation continues to provide that support for this group of students,” said Foundation President Gary Shorman.

"It was exciting to see such a fine group of young people who are working hard to achieve their goals," Swain said. "The excitement they expressed towards their fields of study and enthusiasm for Hutchinson Community College was refreshing to see! Matt and I were honored to meet each student and encourage them to continue pursuing their dreams! Hutchinson Community College is a great school and a wonderful place to begin your education!"
