The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team started its 50th season with a dominant performance against Eastern Oklahoma State in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic on Friday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons won their eighth-straight season opener after an 87-56 victory over the Mountaineers in the 2023-24 season opener.

Hutchinson (1-0) plays NEO (0-1) at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. No. 20 Barton (1-0) plays Eastern Oklahoma State (0-1) at 1 p.m.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;scored a game-high 18 points to lead four Blue Dragons in double figures. Smith was 8 of 10 shooting, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range. Smith just missed a double-double with eight rebounds.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/jackson_hailey_x66o">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;scored 17 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Jackson was 6 of 14 shooting.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/armstead_journey_w1mg">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;hit all five of her shot attempts and finished with 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/norris_kahlen_azmu">Kahlen Norris</a>&nbsp;had 10 points with three rebounds and three assists. Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/horyna_bree_rg28">Bree Horyna</a>&nbsp;had nine points each. Horyna was a perfect 3 of 3 from the 3-point line.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/denison_madie_a39r">Madi Denison</a>&nbsp;finished with six points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons shot 44.3 percent (31 of 70), hitting 5 of 17 from 3-point rang and 20 of 30 from the free-throw line. The Blue Dragons out-rebounded Eastern Oklahoma State 60-36.

Olivia Johnson led the Mountaineers with 13 points. Eastern Oklahoma State shot 23.9 percent (16 of 67) and 5-26 from the 3-point line. The Mountaineers had 17 turnovers.

The Blue Dragons started the game hitting 10 of their first 17 shots and led 23-6 after one quarter. The Dragons used a 15-0 run in building a 17-2 lead after an Armstead free throw with 1:53 to play in the opening quarter.

A Jackson fastbreak layup with 9:16 to play in the second quarter gave the Dragons a 25-6 lead. Horyna gave the Dragons their first 20-point lead of the game with 6:18 to go in the second quarter when she splashed a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 35-13 lead. Jackson hit a jump shot with 3:35 remaining in the period for a 39-15 lead. The Dragons lead 46-21 at halftime.

The Blue Dragons built their first 30-point lead after a Smith layup with 7:05 remaining in the third quarter for a 55-24 lead. Duffy scored inside with 3:01 to go gave the Blue Dragons their largest lead of the game at 39 at 68-29.

DeAnne Karen Thomas, 80, died October 21, 2023, at Legend Senior Living, Hutchinson. She was born February 18, 1943, in Wichita, to Lyndle Everett and Margaret Irene (Eppler) DeHart.

DeAnne graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1961 and graduated Hutchinson Community College in 1963. She worked in the advertising department for Dillons Food Stores for many years.

DeAnne was an artist who enjoyed painting, sewing, and crafting. In her younger years, Deanne also loved to play golf.

On September 8, 1973, she married George Walker Thomas, in Hutchinson. They shared 29 years of marriage, prior to his death on November 6, 2002.

DeAnne is survived by: her sisters, Lynda Oneal of Wichita and Donna Brigman of Hutchinson; nieces, Marlena (Galen) Redenbaugh and Loralea Brigman both of Hutchinson; nephews, Mark (Diana) VanHorn of Wichita, Alan (Beverly) VanHorn of Overland Park, and Jeff (Cindy) VanHorn of Jonesboro, AR.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George and parents, Lyndle and Margaret. &nbsp;

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the Dillon Nature Center Community Room from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team goes after a fourth-consecutive Jayhawk Conference championship on Saturday.&nbsp;

In order to clinch the 11th overall league title, the Blue Dragons (8-0, 5-0 KJCCC) will travel to play the Independence Pirates (3-5, 1-3) at 1 p.m. at Emmot Field in Independence.&nbsp;

The game will be streamed live and free on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 12:30 p.m. with Countdown to Kickoff. The game will also be broadcast of Blue Dragon Flagship Station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5).&nbsp;

Hutchinson enters the game coming off two defensive struggles - a 27-18 victory over Garden City on October 21 and a 13-0 triumph at Highland last Saturday to run their Jayhawk Conference winning streak to 13 games in league designated games and 17 straight overall when postseason games are added.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragon defense didn’t allow a point for the second time this season - Hutchinson beat Iowa Central 27-2 - liming the Scotties to 131 total yards. The Dragon defense had three takeaways, including two interceptions from Ryan Nolan.&nbsp;

The Pirates blitzed Ellsworth two weeks ago. The Pirates has season highs for points scored and threw for 252 of their 302 total-yardage output. Defensively, Independence held Ellsworth to four first downs and nine total yards of offense.&nbsp;

Hutchinson will be playing another top nationally ranked defense in the Pirates this season. Independence leads the KJCCC and is second in the NJCAA in rushing defense allowing 49.4 rushing yards per game.&nbsp;

In fact, the last four opponents on Hutchinson’s schedule - Garden City, Highland, Independence and Iowa Western next week - along with the Blue Dragons take five spots in the NJCAA team Rushing defense Top 6 (Kilgore is the only non-KJCCC team in that list).&nbsp;

One year ago, the Blue Dragons had the exact same scenario with a chance to clinch an outright KJCCC title heading into the Independence game. The Dragons passed that test with a resounding 53-0 victory over the Pirates at Gowans Stadium.&nbsp;

🏈 No. 1 HutchCC goes for 4th straight KJCCC title on Saturday at Independence

Cody Ray Allen Curl, 26, of McPherson, KS, passed away at 5:41 pm, Tuesday, October 31, 2023, in Burrton, KS. 

Cody was born in Salina, Kansas on June 24, 1997, a son of Kelsey Ray Curl and Antoinette Marie (Curl) Caldwell. Cody attended Roosevelt grade school, McPherson, KS, and graduated from Nickerson High School, Nickerson, Ks. He then attended Donnelly College, Lansing, Ks. where he received his Associates Degree in Business Management and later received a Welding Certificate for industrial welding. 

Through the years Cody worked for Apac Road Construction, Hutchinson, Ks., he then worked as a pipeline welder for many years and was currently working for TL Steel, Burrton, Ks as a welder. Cody was a great football player, he enjoyed boating, wrestling, camping and spending time with his friends and family. 

He is survived by his mother, Antoinette Caldwell (Eric), of McPherson, KS; his brother, Dustin Curl (Michelle), of McPherson, KS; girlfriend, Ashley Jennings, of Halstead, KS; his grandparents, Mark &amp; Connie Powell, of McPherson, Ks. and Harold &amp; Missy Curl, of McPherson; his grandmother, Kathy Hornecker (Terry), of Wichita, Ks.; his uncles, Aaron Curl, of Wichita, KS, Uncle Huey (Significant other) Heather Andes, of Medora, Ks, Marty Andes, of Wichita, KS., Nathan Harold (Ashley), of McPherson, Ks., Eric Harold, of McPherson, Ks., cousins, Kirsten Campbell and Addy Carrillo, Hauna Nelson and his loving dog, Sister Marie; other relatives and a host of friends.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you think you have heard a new voice on the KWBW Morning Show since February or on both Hutch High and HutchCC football games, you would be correct.

Newton native Sean Boston is the newest addition to the Eagle Media Hutchinson team of sportscasters and will make his debut tonight calling the action of the HutchCC Blue Dragons as they open the 2023-24 basketball season versus Eastern Oklahoma State College.

Boston joined the Eagle Media Hutch sportscast team this past February, accepting the Assistant Sports Director/Account Executive position.

"It's time to wind down a little," Glen Grunwald, radio voice of the Blue Dragons, said. "I started calling games for Hutch at the beginning of the 1998-1999 season, assisting Rusty Hilst with football and doing the play-by-play for basketball that fall." Grunwald has called more than 3,000 sporting events since he began sports broadcasting as a hobby in 1985 at KANS in Larned. 

"My college roommate, Dennis Franz, owned KANS and asked me to step in and do color for their play-by-play guy for football," Grunwald said.

"Little did I know that, by basketball season, that gentleman would be moving away and I was tossed the ball to start doing play-by-play for the rest of the sports season," Grunwald chuckled.

Ironically, Larned's basketball coach was Kevin Abbott, who lives just around the corner from Grunwald in Hutchinson.

In 1990, the Barton County Cougars came calling and Grunwald started calling their basketball and national volleyball tournament runs until Dan Deming gave him a call and talked him into making the switchover to Hutchinson in the summer of 1998.

So 38 seasons later, 26 as the voice of the Blue Dragons, the time has come to transition to the future.

"Hutchinson has always had great sportscasters. Go way back to Tom Hedrick, who got his start with KWBW in the late '50s. Gary Bender, John Rooney, Hod Humiston, Bob Watson, Jerry Kershaw, and, most recently, Rusty Hilst," Grunwald added. "I'm so proud to be part of that great group of local sportscasters."

"Sean will do a great job. We've been talking about this being a possibility for about three-years-plus. He is a great young man that has called the Hutchinson broadcast job a 'dream job.' I'm looking forward to watch him grow and prosper and couldn't be more proud of how he has embraced the position," Grunwald said.

Boston has a vast history behind the mic for being so young. The Halstead High School and Butler Community College graduate called a state championship football season for Bishop Carroll just a few years ago. He served as an intern with the KJCCC office, helping with a number of events. He has also called arena football in both Wichita and Dodge City, and was part of the Dodge City broadcast team for both Dodge City High and Dodge City Community College for 3 1/2 years. In addition to all that, he had a short stint with Eagle Media Hays in 2022.

"Sean recently got married (to Liz Reifschneider) and became a new dad when he adopted Liz's two young boys, so he is happy to make the Hutchinson area home," Grunwald added.

"It's truly an honor to be a part of the Blue Dragon broadcast crew," Boston said. "I've always had tremendous respect for HutchCC athletics and am looking forward to this opportunity. The passion that the city of Hutchinson and the surrounding areas have for Blue Dragon athletics is truly one-of-a-kind."

Both Boston and Grunwald will continue to provide broadcast coverage for the NJCAA volleyball and basketball championships when they take place in the Sports Arena.

Grunwald will continue to call Hutch High athletics for at least another year with his good friend, Dan Naccarato. Naccarato will assist Boston and Grunwald with the home Blue Dragon games, while Daren Dunn will continue to assist on the road.

"I think the transition will be great. I thank HutchCC Athletic Director Josh Gooch for allowing me to make this transition and continue this year behind the mic. Special thanks to all the fans that have made the past 26 years so very, very special," Grunwald said.

Glen Grunwald isn't going away, he will still continue to call HutchCC men's basketball who also open the season versus North Idaho at the Sports Arena Friday night. Grunwald will only call the home games for the men, while Boston will call the road women's and men's contests.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you think you have heard a new voice on the KWBW Morning Show since February or on both Hutch High and HutchCC football games, you would be correct.Newton native Sean Boston is the newest addition to the Eagle Media Hutchinson team of sportscasters and will make his debut tonight calling the action of the HutchCC Blue Dragons as they open the 2023-24 basketball season versus Eastern Oklahoma State College.Boston joined the Eagle Media Hutch sportscast team this past February, accepting the Assistant Sports Director/Account Executive position."It's time to wind down a little," Glen Grunwald, radio voice of the Blue Dragons, said. "I started calling games for Hutch at the beginning of the 1998-1999 season, assisting Rusty Hilst with football and doing the play-by-play for basketball that fall." Grunwald has called more than 3,000 sporting events since he began sports broadcasting as a hobby in 1985 at KANS in Larned. "My college roommate, Dennis Franz, owned KANS and asked me to step in and do color for their play-by-play guy for football," Grunwald said."Little did I know that, by basketball season, that gentleman would be moving away and I was tossed the ball to start doing play-by-play for the rest of the sports season," Grunwald chuckled.Ironically, Larned's basketball coach was Kevin Abbott, who lives just around the corner from Grunwald in Hutchinson.In 1990, the Barton County Cougars came calling and Grunwald started calling their basketball and national volleyball tournament runs until Dan Deming gave him a call and talked him into making the switchover to Hutchinson in the summer of 1998.So 38 seasons later, 26 as the voice of the Blue Dragons, the time has come to transition to the future."Hutchinson has always had great sportscasters. Go way back to Tom Hedrick, who got his start with KWBW in the late '50s. Gary Bender, John Rooney, Hod Humiston, Bob Watson, Jerry Kershaw, and, most recently, Rusty Hilst," Grunwald added. "I'm so proud to be part of that great group of local sportscasters.""Sean will do a great job. We've been talking about this being a possibility for about three-years-plus. He is a great young man that has called the Hutchinson broadcast job a 'dream job.' I'm looking forward to watch him grow and prosper and couldn't be more proud of how he has embraced the position," Grunwald said.Boston has a vast history behind the mic for being so young. The Halstead High School and Butler Community College graduate called a state championship football season for Bishop Carroll just a few years ago. He served as an intern with the KJCCC office, helping with a number of events. He has also called arena football in both Wichita and Dodge City, and was part of the Dodge City broadcast team for both Dodge City High and Dodge City Community College for 3 1/2 years. In addition to all that, he had a short stint with Eagle Media Hays in 2022."Sean recently got married (to Liz Reifschneider) and became a new dad when he adopted Liz's two young boys, so he is happy to make the Hutchinson area home," Grunwald added."It's truly an honor to be a part of the Blue Dragon broadcast crew," Boston said. "I've always had tremendous respect for HutchCC athletics and am looking forward to this opportunity. The passion that the city of Hutchinson and the surrounding areas have for Blue Dragon athletics is truly one-of-a-kind."Both Boston and Grunwald will continue to provide broadcast coverage for the NJCAA volleyball and basketball championships when they take place in the Sports Arena.Grunwald will continue to call Hutch High athletics for at least another year with his good friend, Dan Naccarato. Naccarato will assist Boston and Grunwald with the home Blue Dragon games, while Daren Dunn will continue to assist on the road."I think the transition will be great. 🏀 Boston set for debut in Sports Arena

Twenty win seasons are normally the magic marker for a successful season for college basketball teams.

Finishing 20-12 last season, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team felt like it underachieved and look to an almost entirely new cast of players to make its run for third-year head coach Tommy DeSalme.

"I'm really excited for this season," said DeSalme, who is 45-21 in his first two seasons on the Blue Dragon bench. "I think we have a team that has lots of room for growth and is versatile."

The all-time NJCAA leader in program victories with 1,894 opens its 92nd season on Friday with North Idaho in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic at 7:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena.

The 2022-23 Blue Dragons were the second-highest scoring team in the NJCAA last season at 97.2 points per game. Leading scorer Aaron Franklin, the Jayhawk Conference's leading scorer from last season, moved onto Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Returning players for DeSalme this season are guards&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/bundy_kernan_hvu2">Kernan Bundy</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/wagler_landon_xlpj">Landon Wagler</a>&nbsp;and forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/weathers_dadrevius_3k80">Dadrevius Weathers</a>.

Bundy (6-foot-3, 190, Overland Park) started in 29 of 32 games last season and is the leading returning scorer. Bundy averaged 9.1 points per game while shooting 37.2 percent overall and 29.1 percent from 3-point range. He had a career-high 28 with five 3-pointers against Northwest Tech last season.

Wagler (6-5, 200, Lenexa) battled through injuries in his freshman season and played in 24 games. The fourth-generation Blue Dragon averaged 1.3 points in 4.0 minutes per game.

Weathers (6-7, 180, Phenix City, Alabama) threw down some show-stopping dunks in his freshman season. He averaged 5.8 points per game in just under 10 minutes played per game.

"We have three strong returners," DeSalme said. "All three of those guys have put in hard work and improved and I look for great seasons by them."

The Dragons have xx transfers added to the mix this season.

"There are lots of new faces," DeSalme said.

"I'm looking forward to watching our lead guard group (Ricks, Holman, Branch and Smith). They all have the ability to play the pace offensively and defensively that we need to have for success.

"We have lots of hybrid players who can play guard and forward positions (Thomas, Whitney, Adeoye, Simon and Daniel). Thomas and Simon are transfers who give us some experience. Daniel and Simon and Thomas can all play well with back to basket as well."

The Blue Dragons were picked to finish sixth in the Jayhawk Conference preseason coaches' poll.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons look for rebound season in 2023-24

Ever since John Ontjes took over the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball program before the 2007-08 season, one thing has always been a constant entering each and every season.

The 2023-24 Blue Dragon women face those same lofty hopes as the season opens Friday with the Eastern Oklahoma State Mountaineers in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic at 5:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson plays NEO at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons are picked to finish second behind Butler in the preseason Jayhawk Conference Coaches' Poll, but are unranked in the NJCAA national preseason rankings.

One of the reasons for the lack of national attention was the way Hutchinson ended the 2022-23 season. The Blue Dragons were stung 73-68 by Coffeyville in the quarterfinal round of the Region VI Tournament, ending last season with a 23-8 record. The Dragons were 17-7 in the KJCCC last season and finished fourth.

Ontjes, who has built a 446-96 record in his first 16 seasons at Hutchinson, returns four players from last season, including two starters.

First-team All-KJCCC forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;(6'0, Lafayette, LA) is the leading returning scorer for Hutchinson. Last season, Duffy averaged 13.1 points per game and shot 48.1 percent from the field. She ranked third in the KJCCC in rebounding at 8.7 boards per contest.

Duffy had nine double-doubles last season with season highs of 25 points against Northwest Tech and 21 rebounds against Independence. Duffy had two of the top five all-time single-game rebound marks last season.

Sophomore point guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/armstead_journey_w1mg">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;(5'8, Tulsa, OK) was fifth in the Jayhawk Conference last season in assists, averaging 4.1 assists (141 total assists). Armstead averaged 9.6 points per game and looks to improve her shooting percentage from 33.1 percent overall and 20.1 percent from 3-point range.

Armstead had two 10 assist games last season and eight games of seven or more assists.

A pair of in-state players round out the group of returning Blue Dragons.

Forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/horyna_bree_rg28">Bree Horyna</a>&nbsp;played in all 31 games, starting two. The 5'10 forward from Liberal averaged 2.4 points and 2.9 rebounds. Five-7 guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/mccormick_brynn_gver">Brynn McCormick</a>&nbsp;played 13 games and averaged 1.7 points per game. She shot 28.6 percent from 3-point range.

The Blue Dragons look to improve an offense that struggled at times in 2022-23. Last season, the Dragons averaged 71.3 points while shooting 39.9 percent overall and 28.9 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, the Dragons allowed 59.2 points per game with opponents shooting 28.9 percent.

Ontjes welcomes two transfers into the program this season.

Sophomore guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/mosley_peyton_0rzp">Peyton Mosley</a>&nbsp;(5'7, Prosper, Texas) played last season at Missouri Southern State University. Mosley appeared in 12 games for the Lions as a guard off the bench while averaging 2.6 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.3 steals in 5.2 minutes per game.

Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/muggeridge_akaysha_rpaz">Akaysha Muggeridge</a>&nbsp;(5'9, Rockhampton, Australia) was at Sacramento State University last season. She appeared in six games last season.

Five freshman also join the Blue Dragons this season. Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;(5'7, Topeka) was a highly south in-state prospect. Minneola freshman forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/denison_madie_a39r">Madi Denison</a>&nbsp;(5'11) is the other in-state freshman.

Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/norris_kahlen_azmu">Kahlen Norris</a>&nbsp;(5'9, The Colony, Texas), forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/jackson_hailey_x66o">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;(5'11, Tulsa, Oklahoma) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/pleasant_jada_61uv">Jada Pleasant</a>&nbsp;(5'7, Beaumont, Texas) round out the freshman class.

🏀 WBB:  Four players return for Ontjes as HutchCC Women open season Friday

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Each year, McPherson College invites Kansas high school students to exhibit their best art and compete for prizes and scholarships at the Art POP exhibition in Friendship Hall at the college. This year, a record number of high schools, art teachers, and students are participating in the exhibit.

Art from 15 schools statewide includes more than 100 art pieces from students and high school art teachers. This is the first year that the exhibit has featured the work of both students and their teachers. Student work will be juried by Tim Stone, painter and part-time art instructor at Wichita State University. A closing reception and award ceremony are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 17, from 5:30-7 p.m., with awards announced at 6 p.m.

The exhibit features artwork from high school students attending Concordia, Garden City, Smoky Valley (Lindsborg), Hesston, McPherson, Canton Galva, Belle Plain, Hutchinson, Goessel, Inman, Kinsley, Salina Central, Moundridge, and Free State (Lawrence).

The exhibit is open to the public during regular business hours, Monday-Friday, through Nov. 17.

McPherson College hosting Art POP exhibition

Ricky Allen “Rick” Turner, 59, died peacefully on earth and was ushered into Heaven on October 30, 2023, at Westview of Derby, with his family by his side. &nbsp;He was born December 6, 1963, in Hutchinson, to Kenneth William and Annie Mae (Potter) Turner.

Rick graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1982, and attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri and Wichita State University. &nbsp;He was very gifted with anything related to the Arts, especially singing, acting, and drawing. &nbsp;Rick played in many High School plays and would command the stage. Rick had a hilarious sense of humor and was well liked by many. Rick had a generous, sweet and kind heart. Rick accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior on January 1, 1984 and was baptized. His favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:13; "For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." Rick was loved unconditionally by his family, and he shared a special bond with his sister, brother-in-law, two nieces, nephew and two great-nephews. &nbsp;

Rick is survived by: his father, Kenneth Turner (Barbara) of Hutchinson; brother, Terry Turner (Janet) of Hutchinson; sister, Annette Souza (Steven) of Shell Knob, MO; nieces and nephews, Brandon Colvard, Ashley Schmidt, Traca Colvard, Anthony "Tony" Turner (Brea), Cameron VanDegrift (Laura), Trevor Turner (Alyssa) and Colby Turner; eight great-nieces and nephews; and uncles, Jim Turner (Pam) and Allen Cole and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Celebration of Life service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2023, at Elliott Chapel. &nbsp;Inurnment will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. &nbsp;Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. &nbsp;Cremation has taken place.&nbsp;

O’Dell Reed, 81, born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, passed away in Wichita, KS on October 29th, 2023.

O’Dell Reed, was born on October 1, 1942 known as Big O, and lived in Muskogee Oklahoma the son of parents who were sharecroppers, until around 5 years old. Later, moving with all his family including the Reed’s, Crawford’s, and Irving’s to Hutchinson Kansas.&nbsp;

In Hutchinson He lived a life of humble beginnings attending McCandless Elementary School followed by Sherman Junior High where he finished 8th grade.

O’Dell’s first job that he loved dearly was shoe shining. Mr. Fuller took him under his wing and taught him everything he needed to know about shoe shining. Here O’Dell found a new passion and gained tips to help support his family. Next O’Dell became a dishwasher at Hutchinson Community College, there he adopted the name “The singing pot and pan man”.&nbsp;

O’Dell loved to sing so much that he made a career in entertainment singing with many groups including The Jades, O’Dell Reed and the Fabulous Cadillac’s, The Imperials, and King Midas and the Mufflers, with whom he entered The Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Liberty Hall of Fame in 2007. His talent, voice, and smile touched the lives of countless fans who have admired him for years. O'Dell's love for singing gospel and soul music inspired him to become one of the most iconic and beloved soul singers in the Hutchinson area.

Later on, O’Dell would retire from Jacksons Meat Market and move to Wichita, KS to be closer to his family. O’Dell Reed was a simple passionate man, he will always be remembered for his bright smile, energetic personality, mild nature, and caring ways. He touched so many lives and always remained positive until the very end. O’Dell will be forever missed.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for Friday, November 17, 2023, at 2:00 P.M., at the Dillon Hall/Encampment Building in Hutchinson, KS.

O'Dell will be buried in the East Side cemetery with his mom per his request.

Rev. Eldon John Epp, 72, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023 at his home. He was born on September 1, 1951 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of John Regier and Katharina (Ediger) Epp.

Eldon grew up on a cattle farm south of Buhler. He graduated from Buhler High School with the class of 1969. Eldon later attended Hutchinson Community College and Bethel College, where he received his undergraduate.

Following his schooling, Eldon worked on a year-round team managing Swan Lake Christian Camp near Freeman, South Dakota for 2 ½ years. He then headed off to the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana and graduated with his Master’s degree of Divinity. The summer following his seminary, Eldon student pastored at First Mennonite Church of Christian in Moundridge. In 1981, he started pastoring at the new Mennonite Church in Salina and in 1988 went to Ames, Iowa for a ½ time post with the campus-related Mennonite Fellowship there.

In 1993, Eldon began two years of chaplaincy training at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, followed by three years at the Manhattan, KS Mennonite Church. Eldon moved to Wichita in 2007, and in 2009, he began pastoring at First Mennonite Church in Ransom, Kansas until 2021. His most recent positions were Chaplain for Bethesda Home in Goessel and Associate Pastor at Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church in Wichita.

Eldon served on the stewardship team for the Western District Conference and was a member of the Christian Peacemaker Team.

He is survived by his sister, Dee Graber (Gary Clingenpeel), her daughter, Tammy (Brian) Coatney and their daughter, McKenna (Cannon) Kern; brother, Don (Annette) Epp, and their sons, Henry Epp (Sara Lewis), and Andrew (Taisha) Epp and their children, Isaiah, Izabella, and Lincoln.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Raymond Epp; and great-nephew, Clay Coatney.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A new report released today by United Ways of Kansas highlights the hardships of nearly 450,000 Kansas households who were unable to afford the state’s cost of living in 2021.

ALICE in Kansas: A Study of Financial Hardship places a spotlight on a large population of hardworking residents who work at low-paying jobs, have little or no savings and are one emergency away from falling into poverty. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. 

The Report is the most comprehensive depiction of financial need in the state to date, using the latest data from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Census. The Report unveils new measures, based on 2021 income levels and expenses, that quantify how many in Kansas’s workforce are struggling financially, and why.

In 2021, a total of 310,108 Kansas households fell into what United Way calls the ALICE population. These are households earning more than the official U.S. poverty level, but less than the basic cost of living. This number was double the official poverty rate, which accounted for 137,011 households in the state. Combined, ALICE households and households in poverty fell below the ALICE Threshold of Financial Survival and accounted for 39% percent of all households in Kansas.

“We all know ALICE,” said United Way State Chair, Lisa Gleason “ALICE is the recent college graduate unable to afford to live on their own, the young family strapped by childcare costs and the mid-career professional now underemployed. These folks are vital to our state’s future economic well-being, and they face barriers beyond their control – frustrating their ability to become financially stable.”

The Report is a project of United For ALICE, a grassroots movement of United Ways, corporations, nonprofits, and foundations in more than half the United States, all using the same methodology to document financial need. ALICE Reports provide county-by-county data and analysis of how many households are struggling, including the obstacles ALICE households face on the road to financial independence.

“This Report provides the objective data that explains why so many residents are struggling to survive and the challenges they face in attempting to make ends meet,” said the Report’s lead researcher, United For ALICE National Director Stephanie Hoopes, Ph.D. “Until now, the true picture of need in local communities and states has been understated and obscured by misleading averages and outdated poverty statistics.”

▪ Households below the ALICE Threshold span all races, ages, and genders, closely mirroring the state's basic demographic make-up. Yet for certain groups, the struggle is disproportionate. For example, 60% of Black and 49% of Hispanic households in Kansas were below the ALICE Threshold in 2021, compared to 36% of white households.

▪ Because wages had stagnated for a decade, 28% of the state’s 30,020 retail sales workers lived below the ALICE Threshold in 2021.

▪ Half of Kansas’ 105 counties – 61– had 40 percent or more households unable to make ends meet in 2021. The average income needed in order to survive in Kansas depends on local conditions and ranged from $50,700 to $76,596 annually for a family of four, more than double the official U.S. poverty level.

▪ Even with the variety of temporary pandemic supports available, in 2021, a family of four with two-full time workers earning salaries as a retail salesperson and a cashier – two of the most common occupations in Kansas –were just able to meet their basic expenses with the help of these supports.

United Way is focused on providing the basic foundation in the areas of education, financial stability, and health to help improve the lives of both ALICE and those in poverty, for the long-term benefit of the wider community.

The Report was released in partnership with United For ALICE, a U.S. research organization driving innovation, research and action to improve life across the country for people in financial hardship and was funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas.

“When individuals struggle financially – their communities also struggle. The social determinants of health, like someone’s zip code and the amount of money they make, have a significant impact on a person’s and community’s health and well-being,” said Virginia Barnes, director, Blue Health Initiatives. “Across one’s lifespan, increased financial instability also increases risk for mental illness, chronic disease, higher mortality, and lower life expectancy. We believe this United for ALICE report will spur action to better support the whole health of Kansans.”

The average income needed in order to survive in Kansas depends on local conditions and ranged from $50,700 to $76,596 annually for a family of four, more than double the official U.S. poverty level.▪ Even with the variety of temporary pandemic supports available, in 2021, a family of four with two-full time workers earning salaries as a retail salesperson and a cashier – two of the most common occupations in Kansas –were just able to meet their basic expenses with the help of these supports.United Way is focused on providing the basic foundation in the areas of education, financial stability, and health to help improve the lives of both ALICE and those in poverty, for the long-term benefit of the wider community.The Report was released in partnership with United For ALICE, a U.S. research organization driving innovation, research and action to improve life across the country for people in financial hardship and was funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas.“When individuals struggle financially – their communities also struggle. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — To help combat food insecurity amongst its campus community, Hutchinson Community College has launched a student food pantry located in the Rimmer Learning Resource Center.

“Nationally, nearly 60% of college students experience some sort of food insecurity”, shared Debbie Graber, a HutchCC counselor in its Student Success Center. “It’s a proven statistic that food insecurity can directly impact a student’s academic performance and their ability to complete their degree. We feel this is a step we can take to positively impact that.”

The food pantry is made possible through a grant from the Kansas Board of Regents. The pantry will initially serve only non-perishable items with the goal of adding refrigerated storage to allow for expanded offerings to benefit students.

HutchCC starts student food pantry

Monday's thrilling five-set road victory over Butler vaulted the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team into the No. 2 overall seed for the 2023 Region VI Division I Volleyball Tournament, which begins Wednesday at home sites across the league.

Hutchinson (24-14) play host to Dodge City (15-16) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena in its opening-round match.

The match will be broadcast live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 5:50 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person. Because this is a postseason event, Blue Dragon All-Sports Tickets are not valid. Hutchinson Community College students will be admitted free.

The Blue Dragons and Colby tied for second at 9-5, but the Dragons won a tie-breaker with the Trojans for the second seed.

Hutchinson swept the regular-season series with the Conquistadors, but each match had its difficulties.

The Blue Dragons defeated Dodge City 3-1 on August 30 at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson decisively won the first two sets, but dropped the third 25-10 before winning the fourth 20-19.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/golden_taniya_wjj0">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;had a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. The Dragons held Dodge city to .077 hitting and had nine team blocks.

Hutchinson rallied from two sets down to defeat Dodge City on September 30 at the Student Events Center in Dodge City. Golden had 27 kills on .404 hitting in a 21-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-14, 15-10 come from behind victory. The Blue Dragons had a season-high 20 team blocks in the second matchup.

Golden continues to lead the nation in kills with 541.

The Dragons hit .212 as a team and average 14.76 digs and 1.94 service aces per set.

Dodge City is averaging 10.95 kills per set on .141 hitting. The Conquistadors average 15.21 digs. 1.47 blocks and 1.85 aces per set.

The Hutchinson/Dodge City winner will take on the Colby/Cloud County winner in the second Region VI semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Barton Gym in Great Bend. The Blue Dragons continue to lead the Jayhawk Conference in blocking at 2.37 blocks per set.

🏐 Blue Dragons host Dodge City tonight in Region VI first round

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Fine Arts and Humanities Department of Hutchinson Community College will host Fine Arts Day on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon.&nbsp;

Those who wish to attend must be a high school junior or senior. The Fine Arts Department will host free workshops and scholarships.&nbsp;

Workshops will include Vocal Jazz with Neal Allsup, Polaroid Emulsion Lift with Kim Invancovich and Amy Goering and Stage Fighting with Deidre Mattox and Shane Dawson.&nbsp;

Those who plan to audition for a choral and vocal jazz scholarship need to bring one piece of music. Art students need to bring a portfolio of 10 sketches, and theater students need to bring two contrasting monologues that are one minute each in length.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Community College to host fine arts day

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Rotary Club of Hutchinson will hold its next meeting Monday, Nov. 6 at noon at the&nbsp;Stringer Fine Arts Center on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. Linda Kehres and Elaine Heisler will present at the meeting. The public is invited to attend.

Linda Kehres became Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at KU in 2019. She has degrees from Emporia State and Baker University and a lengthy career with nonprofit organizations in Topeka, leading one to earn the city’s Nonprofit of Distinction award. 

Linda is a graduate of Leadership Kansas and was selected as the Women of Influence Rising Star in Topeka.

Linda Kehres, KU Osher director, will speak about a new local partnership with Hutchinson Community College that will bring high quality enrichment noncredit short courses to Hutchinson. 

The courses focus on individuals 50 and “better,” yet anyone is welcome.&nbsp;

Elaine Heisler serves as a member of the KU Osher Lifelong Learning Advisory Board. Prior to retiring she worked in the marketing and public relations field while living in Topeka. Now, Elaine enjoys the freedom of retirement. Her days are filled with reading, working out at the Y, and watching lots of sports.

Elaine and her husband, Bob, live in Wichita, after moving here in 2015. 

The South Central part of Kansas is home to them. They appreciate the openness, both of the landscape and the people.
