Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) and Barton Community College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing a new partnership aimed at expanding access to respiratory care education and addressing a growing workforce need in central Kansas.

Through this agreement, students from Barton will complete their general education requirements at Barton and then have the opportunity to transition into HutchCC’s Respiratory Care Program. The partnership was developed in response to an increased demand for respiratory care professionals in Barton’s service area, which includes nine regional hospitals."

This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to meeting the healthcare workforce needs of our communities," said Dr. Tricia Paramore, President of Hutchinson Community College. "By working together, we are creating clearer pathways for students and helping ensure that Kansas hospitals have access to the skilled respiratory therapists they urgently need."

HutchCC, Barton CC announce partnership

TOPEKA, Kan. — Hutchinson native and current Washburn University men's basketball coach, Brett Ballard, has been named the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association (KBCA) Four-Year Coach of the Year for the 2024-25 season.

Ballard led the Ichabods to the NCAA Division II Final Four, before falling to eventual national champion, Nova Southeastern in the semifinals. The Ichabods finished the season with a 30-4 record, going 17-2 in the MIAA, and a perfect 16-0 inside of Lee Arena.

Ballard finished up his eighth season in Topeka and guided the Ichabods to the MIAA regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Central Region.

He is a 1998 graduate of Hutchinson High School. He then played one season at Cowley College and one at HutchCC, where he graduated in 2000. Ballard then played his final two seasons at Kansas under Roy Williams.

🏀 Ballard named KBCA Four-Year Coach of the Year

Hutchinson, Kan. – Hutchinson Community College has been awarded a $708,965 FRAME (Fostering Residential Advancement through Mentoring and Education) Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce. The funding will support the construction of three new residential dwellings in Hutchinson, providing valuable hands-on learning opportunities for students while addressing the community’s affordable housing needs.

As part of the project, students in HutchCC’s and USD308’s Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy’s Construction Technology program will build a duplex in the 600 block of East Avenue A, gaining real-world experience in residential construction from foundation to finish. In addition, the college is partnering with Interfaith Housing and Community Services to construct a single-family, stand-alone home on 10th Avenue. Interfaith will employ Youth Apprentices associated with the Construction Technology program in the building of this home.

“These projects represent a win-win for our community,” said Dr. Tricia Paramore, President of Hutchinson Community College. “Our students are developing marketable, in-demand skills while contributing directly to Hutchinson’s housing development and revitalization efforts.”

The FRAME program is a statewide initiative designed to increase the supply of affordable housing across Kansas by fostering partnerships between educational institutions, nonprofit housing providers, and local communities. Other partners collaborating on this project are the City of Hutchinson, the Hutchinson Land Bank, the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, Joel Haag from Mann and Company Architects, Interfaith Housing, GAF Roofing, in addition to several local contractors.

“We’re proud to support Hutchinson Community College and its partners through the FRAME program,” said Kerri Falletti, Grassroots Strategy Developer at the Kansas Department of Commerce. “This grant not only helps build homes — it builds futures by equipping students with critical construction skills while strengthening communities across Kansas.”

Construction is expected to begin this fall, with completion slated for 2026.

‘Dragon Talk with Drew Dallas’ returning for 2025 season on KWBW Radio

Virginia “Ginger” Mayfield, age 73, of Hutchinson, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at home on August 2, 2025. &nbsp;Born in 1951, in Hutchinson, Ginger was an artist and lifelong learner.

After graduating from Hutchinson High School (class of 1969), she achieved a Liberal Art degree at Monticello College, a Bachelor of Art degree from the University of Kansas, and a Master of Fine Art from Wichita State University. Each summer Ginger continued to earn graduate level college credits through Adams State College by participating in the Taos Watercolor Workshops held each year in Taos, New Mexico.

The life she lived was one of joy and creativity. Ginger’s paintings are celebrations of vibrant colors which matched her personality. She shared her talents as an art teacher in Kansas, influencing generations of students at Hutchinson High School, where Ginger was a beloved art instructor for over thirty years.

She is survived by: her husband of thirty years, George “Bill” Forst; brother, Bill (Sarah); sister Janet (Randy); sister-in-law, Kathy; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Ginger was preceded in death by her parents, Erma and Martin Mayfield, and brothers, Larry and Rick.

A celebration of Ginger’s life will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Hutchinson Art Center, 405 N. Washington St., Hutchinson. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday thru Saturday until October 4 at Elliott Mortuary.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Defending national champion Hutchinson Community College has been picked to win its fifth consecutive Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference football title in a vote of league coaches released Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons, who shared the KJCCC regular-season crown last year with Butler and Coffeyville, received 42 points and six of the seven first-place votes in the 2025 preseason poll. Hutchinson went 11-1 overall in 2024, winning its second national title under sixth-year head coach Drew Dallas.

Garden City, which collected the remaining first-place vote, was picked second with 36 points. The Broncbusters are looking for their first winning season since 2021 under second-year coach Kiyoshi Harris. Butler, coming off its 26th conference championship, was chosen third with 31 points. The Grizzlies are led by first-year head coach Kyle Woodall following the resignation of Bryce Vignery in March.

Coffeyville, which went 9-3 last season and shared the KJCCC title, was picked fourth with 29 points. Dodge City, which finished 6-4 under first-year coach Ryan Lusby, is fifth with 21 points. Independence (17) and Highland (13) round out the poll, with Tom Minnick taking over the Scotties program after a 5-6 season.

The KJCCC season opens Aug. 23, when Independence hosts Trinity Valley at 11 a.m. and Dodge City visits Tyler Junior College at 7 p.m. Highland and Butler open Aug. 30, with the Scotties hosting Snow College and the Grizzlies traveling to Northeast Oklahoma A&amp;M.

🏈 Blue Dragons picked to win fifth straight KJCCC title

As students gear up for a new academic year at Hutchinson Community College, President Dr. Tricia Paramore is reflecting on a successful first year at the helm — and setting the tone for continued growth and accessibility in the year ahead.&nbsp;

Paramore, a longtime faculty member and administrator who began her career at HutchCC in 1996 as a biology instructor, stepped into the presidency on July 1, 2024. Now entering her 30th year with the college, she said her first year in the role was steady, productive and fulfilling.&nbsp;

“It could have been really big ups and big downs, but it wasn’t,” Paramore said. “It was really great. I’ve got a great team and our staff is amazing. Our customer service philosophy is to bring your A-game every day, be responsive and help people feel at home.”&nbsp;

That team-focused approach seems to be paying off. HutchCC celebrated another record graduating class in 2024 with approximately 1,000 graduates. Of those, 475 students crossed the stage in May, a moment Paramore called a “great time of celebration.”&nbsp;

The college also awarded more than 1,700 degrees and certificates last year — accounting for 11% of all credentials earned at Kansas community colleges.&nbsp;

“That's saying something,” Paramore said. “It speaks to the strength and accessibility of our programs.”&nbsp;

Enrollment for the upcoming fall semester is currently trending about 6% higher than last year, although Paramore noted those numbers fluctuate daily leading up to the start of classes on Aug. 20. Some specialized programs, such as physical therapy assistant training, are already underway.&nbsp;

Expanding Technical and Workforce Pathways&nbsp;

In line with changing workforce needs, HutchCC continues to expand its technical and certificate programs. Among the newest is a John Deere program in partnership with PrairieLand Partners. The two-year program, based at South Campus and the PrairieLand facility on K-61, will offer students industry-specific training, tool allowances and job placement upon completion.&nbsp;

Paramore added, “These students are going to have jobs when they finish.”&nbsp;

The push to support technical training reflects a broader shift away from the traditional four-year college track.&nbsp;

“College looks different for everyone,” Paramore said. “When you and I were in school, the four-year degree was the norm. Now, some students want to go straight into the workforce with a certificate or associate degree — and that’s great, too.”&nbsp;

Strong Presence in Area High Schools&nbsp;

HutchCC also continues to play a major role in dual-credit education across the region. Last year, nearly 2,300 high school students in 33 schools across Reno, McPherson, Harvey, and part of Rice County earned college credits through HutchCC.&nbsp;

“These students can graduate from high school already two or three steps ahead,” Paramore said. Many of the courses are part of the state’s Systemwide Transfer program, allowing for seamless credit transfer to Kansas universities.&nbsp;

Technical classes like welding, machining, auto body, and electrician training are also offered in high schools, supported by Senate Bill 155, which covers tuition for qualifying technical courses.&nbsp;

A Network of Campuses and Partnerships&nbsp;

In addition to its main campus in Hutchinson, HutchCC maintains outreach centers in Newton and McPherson, as well as numerous program-specific sites within Hutchinson — including facilities for barbering, cosmetology, fire science and agriculture diesel mechanics.&nbsp;

Paramore emphasized that HutchCC’s broad reach and partnerships make education both affordable and accessible.&nbsp;

“Eighty-six percent of our students receive some form of financial assistance,” she said. “And students who take courses in high school at the reduced tuition rate can even get reimbursed if they attend HutchCC full time after graduation. It’s almost like getting two classes for the price of one.”&nbsp;

With momentum building, Paramore is focused on continuing to meet community needs through high-quality education, responsive workforce training and strong student support.&nbsp;

“As a president, it’s not about me — it’s about how we serve our students, our community and the state,” she said. “And that’s what we’re committed to doing, every day.”&nbsp;

Now, some students want to go straight into the workforce with a certificate or associate degree — and that’s great, too.”&nbsp;<h2>Strong Presence in Area High Schools&nbsp;</h2>HutchCC also continues to play a major role in dual-credit education across the region. Last year, nearly 2,300 high school students in 33 schools across Reno, McPherson, Harvey, and part of Rice County earned college credits through HutchCC.&nbsp;“These students can graduate from high school already two or three steps ahead,” Paramore said. Many of the courses are part of the state’s Systemwide Transfer program, allowing for seamless credit transfer to Kansas universities.&nbsp;Technical classes like welding, machining, auto body, and electrician training are also offered in high schools, supported by Senate Bill 155, which covers tuition for qualifying technical courses.&nbsp;<h2>A Network of Campuses and Partnerships&nbsp;</h2>In addition to its main campus in Hutchinson, HutchCC maintains outreach centers in Newton and McPherson, as well as numerous program-specific sites within Hutchinson — including facilities for barbering, cosmetology, fire science and agriculture diesel mechanics.&nbsp;Paramore emphasized that HutchCC’s broad reach and partnerships make education both affordable and accessible.&nbsp;“Eighty-six percent of our students receive some form of financial assistance,” she said. “And students who take courses in high school at the reduced tuition rate can even get reimbursed if they attend HutchCC full time after graduation. It’s almost like getting two classes for the price of one.”&nbsp;<h2>Looking Ahead&nbsp;</h2>With momentum building, Paramore is focused on continuing to meet community needs through high-quality education, responsive workforce training and strong student support.&nbsp;“As a president, it’s not about me — it’s about how we serve our students, our community and the state,” she said. “And that’s what we’re committed to doing, every day.”&nbsp;

Ryan Christopher Swanson, 56, died August 2, 2025, at Hospice House, surrounded by his wife and four sons. &nbsp;He was born January 19, 1969, in Merriam, to Abbie Blevins. Ryan was lovingly adopted by Rex and Vicky Howell. &nbsp;After Rex died, Vicky married Robert “Swanee” Swanson, and he adopted Ryan.&nbsp;

Ryan graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1987, and attended Hutchinson Community College (HCC) and Kansas State University, where he graduated in 1991. &nbsp;

From a very young age, Ryan was a gifted athlete with a special love for the game of basketball. &nbsp;He played basketball for Hutchinson High School as well as HCC. &nbsp;In 1988, he helped the HCC Blue Dragons win the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament. &nbsp;After graduating from K-State, Ryan began his career coaching men’s basketball teams at various colleges, including Kentucky, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Garden City. &nbsp;From 2006-2009, he coached the Hutchinson Blue Dragons and from 2015-2022, the Buhler High School Crusaders. &nbsp;Throughout his coaching career, Ryan made thousands of connections with coaches, athletes, families, and the media, leaving an impact on everyone he ever met. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Currently, Ryan owned Phoenix Restoration and Phoenix Roofing, with his wife, Robin. &nbsp;He was a member and avid golfer at Prairie Dunes Country Club. &nbsp;Ryan enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends especially on vacations, with trips to Las Vegas being one of his favorite get-aways. He had a fondness for all dogs, but especially his own four-legged pals- Willow, Maverick, Chief, Cali, Harley, and Stella. &nbsp;In addition, Ryan’s grand-dogs- B, Remi, Goose, Hank, Bentley, and Milo, held a special place in his heart. &nbsp;Above all, Ryan loved his family unconditionally, and was always there for them in the peaks and valleys of life. &nbsp;Ryan was proud to be a father, and proved blood does not make you a father, true love and devotion does.&nbsp;

On October 3, 2010, he married the love of his life, Robin Raye Griffey, in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ryan Swanson, a former Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball player and head coach and longtime figure in Reno County athletics and business, died following a medical emergency while on vacation in Branson, Missouri.

Swanson grew up in South Hutchinson and was a standout at Hutchinson High School before playing basketball at Hutchinson Community College. As a Blue Dragon, he helped lead HutchCC to the 1988 NJCAA National Championship and was named an Academic All-American in 1989.

He returned to his alma mater as the head men’s basketball coach from 2006-09, compiling a 66-29 record over three seasons. After his tenure at HutchCC, Swanson remained active in the local basketball community, coaching youth teams and later taking over as head boys basketball coach at Buhler High School from 2015 through the 2021-22 season.

Outside of basketball, Swanson and his wife, Robin, founded Phoenix Restoration and Roofing, a Hutchinson-based business providing 24/7 emergency services for water, fire, storm and mold damage, as well as non-emergency carpet and air-duct cleaning.

Hutchinson Community College’s Cosmetology and Barbering programs will once again help area students get ready for the upcoming school year with its annual Back to School Haircut Day.

The event will take place on Monday, August 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the HutchCC Cosmetology and Barbering Center, located at 200 E. 3rd Ave. in Hutchinson.

Children from pre-K through 12th grade are eligible to receive a free haircut, provided by HutchCC cosmetology and barbering students along with licensed volunteer stylists and barbers. No appointment is necessary, and haircuts will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

“This day is a highlight of the year for us and our students,” said Alex Hass, HutchCC’s Cosmetology Program Coordinator. “We look forward to offering this each year and are excited to help those in our community prepare for the upcoming school year.”

Marilyn Joyce Christner, 93, died, Saturday, July 26, 2025, at The Arbors, Hutchinson. She was born December 31, 1931, in McPherson, KS, to Leo Kelly and Dorothy Anna (Wilke) Slabach.

In 1949, Marilyn graduated from Inman High School. Shortly after high school, she attended Hutchinson Community Junior College, earning her associates degree in 1951.

On September 2, 1951, she married Keith L. Christner, in Hutchinson. They shared over 63 years of marriage, prior to his death on February 17, 2015.

Marilyn truly enjoyed being active in her community and making a difference by being involved in Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Antique Club, Vota Vita, the Election Board, and Christian Women Fellowship (CWF). In her spare time, she was still golfing and bowling up until 3 years ago.

Marilyn is survived by: her children, Mike Christner of Sellersburg, IN, Rex (Terry) Christner of Hutchinson, KS, Keith (Julie) Christner of Garden City, KS, Jay (Donna) Christner of Augusta, KS, Kathy (Jamie) Carroll of Hutchinson, KS, and Cindy (Jeremy) Adcock of Hutchinson, KS; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Shirley Ann Fager, 83, died July 25, 2025, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born June 15, 1942, in Talmadge, MI, to Paul M. and Elizabeth G. (Carlisle) Smith.

Shirley graduated from Pratt High School in 1960. She attended Pratt Community College and graduated with a bachelor’s in elementary education from Wichita State University. Shirley was an elementary school teacher in Leon, Moundridge and Leroy. She enjoyed fishing, geocaching and taking photos. When living in Independence, Shirley liked to attend the Neewollah festival and would go back to Independence for the parade once she moved away. She cherished spending time with family; Shirley’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to her.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One of Hutchinson’s most cherished and historic events returns next weekend, as the community comes together for the 136th annual Emancipation Celebration—a three-day gathering honoring freedom, unity, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

Toyla Frondorf and J.K. Vann previewed the celebration, which runs from Friday, Aug. 1, through Sunday, Aug. 3. The weekend includes a mix of family-friendly events, cultural observances, food, music, and community connection, centered primarily at Hutchinson Community College.

“This event has endured for over a century because it brings people together,” Vann said. “It’s not just about the past—it’s about acknowledging where we are today and continuing the work to eliminate discrimination in all its forms.”

Friday Festivities: Fun, Basketball, and Jazz

The celebration kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday with Family Fun Night at HutchCC's Central Park, featuring bounce houses, free hot dogs, face painting, a cakewalk, and other kid-friendly activities.

At 6 p.m., the action moves indoors to the Hutchinson YMCA for a three-point shootout. The free event is open to all ages, with sign-ups beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Friday wraps with a special “Jazz in the Park” concert at 8 p.m. featuring the Hutchinson Community College Jazz Band, bringing smooth sounds to the summer evening at Central Park.

Saturday starts with the Emancipation Parade at 10 a.m., beginning at Avenue B and Adams and traveling north along Main Street to 12th Avenue. Anyone interested in participating in the parade can contact chairperson Kathy Fuller to join.

Following the parade, festivities shift back to HutchCC with a community picnic and barbecue at noon at Stringer Fine Arts Center. The picnic will include the official reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, recognition of parade winners, and an address from this year’s parade marshal, Robert Green.

“This is the heart of the weekend,” Vann said. “There’s just something powerful about sharing food and stories while surrounded by friends, old and new.”

The celebration wraps up Sunday with the beloved Gospel Fest at 3 p.m. in the Gallery Theatre at Stringer Fine Arts Center. Vann emphasized the deep roots of gospel music in African American history, calling it a bridge between generations and a message of enduring faith.

“It’s healing. It’s heritage. It’s history,” he said.

Immediately following Gospel Fest, guests are invited to the annual ice cream social, a tradition started by Dr. Hence Parson and closes the weekend on a sweet, communal note.

This year, organizers made a conscious effort to centralize most activities at Hutchinson Community College to make it easier for attendees to stay engaged throughout the weekend.

“We want to move beyond just attendance,” Vann said. “We want full participation. That means making it easier for people to show up and be part of it.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Three weeks ago, Ty Adkins wasn’t even sure he’d get a chance to tee it up in a U.S. Amateur qualifier. Now, the 2023 Hutchinson High School graduate is preparing to compete on one of golf’s grandest amateur stages.

Adkins, who recently wrapped up his sophomore season at Wichita State and is transferring to South Dakota State this fall, earned a spot in the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship with a 6-under-par 66 on Monday in final qualifying at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park. He tied for medalist honors with his former Shocker teammate, Michael Winslow, to claim one of the coveted invitations.

“I honestly didn’t even think I’d get into the first qualifier,” Adkins said. “I signed up late and was seventh on the waitlist. The whole journey from there to qualifying for the U.S. Am has been surreal.”

The 2025 U.S. Amateur Championship will be held Aug. 11–17 at the historic Olympic Club in San Francisco. The tournament opens with two rounds of stroke play on the Ocean Course, before the top 64 scorers advance to match play on the famed Lake Course. The Olympic Club has hosted five U.S. Opens, most recently in 2012, and the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open.

“It’s one of the most historic venues in the country,” Adkins said. “Just being able to walk those fairways and compete against the best amateurs in the world, it’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid.”

That dream almost didn’t happen. Adkins received a late call-up to the July 1 local qualifier at Beatrice Country Club in Nebraska and responded with a 4-under-par 68, good for a fourth-place finish and a spot in final qualifying.

At Milburn, Adkins made the turn at 1-under before catching fire on the back nine. He went 5-under over his final five holes, including birdies on holes 12, 14, 15 and 16, and capped the run with a bunker hole-out eagle on the par-5 17th. Adkins went from tied for 15th place after 11 holes to the lead after the strong finish.

“I bogeyed 11, and that’s when I knew I had to make a run,” he said. “I hit some really good shots coming in, and when that eagle dropped, I kind of zoned out. I couldn’t believe it was happening.”

His brother, Trent, also a Hutch High alum, was by his side every step of the way, having taken the day off work to serve as his caddie.

“He doesn’t play a lot of golf, but he was awesome out there,” Adkins said. “He kept me grounded and helped me stay calm down the stretch. That meant the world to me.”

The performance was years in the making. Adkins credited a long list of mentors and supporters, beginning with his former high school coach, Charlie Pierce.

“Coach Pierce really introduced me to competitive golf,” Adkins said. “He let me start practicing with the high school team when I was still in middle school. That made a huge difference in my development.”

"I'm so happy for Ty," Pierce said. "He's worked so hard for everything he's accomplished, and it's great to see his hard work rewarded."

Adkins also paid tribute to the late Mike Kenney and Rusty Hilst, two pillars of the Hutchinson golf community who helped guide his journey.

“Mike helped me become a better golfer and a better person. And Rusty, he was always in my corner, helping me with scholarships, writing letters, and always checking in. I wish I could’ve called him after I qualified. I know he’d be proud.”

A constant source of support, Adkins’ parents, Troy and Susan, have been with him for every step of his golf journey. From junior tournaments to state tournaments to this summer’s breakthrough run, they’ve logged countless miles and never wavered in their belief.

“My parents have sacrificed so much for me to chase this dream,” Adkins said. “They’ve driven me all over the country, supported every crazy tournament I’ve signed up for, and never stopped encouraging me. I wouldn’t be in this position without them.”

A regular at Prairie Dunes Country Club, Adkins was made an honorary member in high school and has worked as a caddie there throughout college. He credits the world-renowned course, and its longtime head professional, John Lanham, as a major part of his development.

“John Lanham has been incredible to me,” Adkins said. “He’s always let me come out and practice as long as I’m working and caddying. There’s not many better places in Kansas to practice than Prairie Dunes, just having this course in Hutchinson is just insane. It's one of the best courses in the country and one of the best courses in the world. It's really a blessing to be able to play out here and I owe a lot of my success to that course and to John.”

After two seasons at Wichita State, Adkins entered the transfer portal and will head to Brookings, South Dakota this fall to join the South Dakota State golf program under head coach Parker Edens.

“I’m excited for the new opportunity,” Adkins said. “Coach Edens is a great golfer himself, and I think I can learn a lot from him. I’m hoping he can even caddie for me at the U.S. Am.”

"To have players qualify for USGA events is a huge deal for our program," Eden said. "We have been lucky enough to have two players do that this summer, with Ty qualifying for the U.S. Am and an incoming freshman qualify for the U.S. Junior. To have the Jackrabbits represented at the biggest amateur tournament in the world is a great representation of where our program is headed and we are grateful to have Ty being the one representing us there. I think this shows the quality of program we are building and have here in Brookings, South Dakota."

The championship begins Monday, Aug. 11 with 18 holes of stroke play, followed by another round Tuesday. The top 64 players then advance to head-to-head match play, culminating in a 36-hole championship match on Sunday, Aug. 17.

Adkins plans to arrive in San Francisco a few days early to walk the course and prepare for what he calls the most exciting week of his life.

“I’ve worked so hard for this,” he said. “And I’ve been blessed with people around me who’ve believed in me the whole way. I’m ready to compete, to soak it all in, and to show I belong out there.”

Educators from across Reno County will come together once again for “All Hands on Deck,” a countywide professional development event set for Jan. 5, 2026, on the Hutchinson Community College campus.

The one-day event will host more than 1,100 educators representing every public school district in the county, as well as private schools such as Central Christian and educational institutions like HutchCC and RCEC. The event features a full schedule of keynote presentations, breakout workshops, and networking opportunities designed to strengthen instruction and collaboration across the region.

“This is really an all-inclusive event for anyone involved in education in Reno County,” said Paul Erickson, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for grades 6–12 at Buhler USD 313 and a lead organizer for the event. “It’s a massive undertaking, but the results have been well worth it.”

Originally launched in 2024, the event received overwhelmingly positive feedback, prompting organizers to bring it back after a one-year break. “It takes more than a year to plan an event of this scale,” Erickson noted. “With HCC offering their entire campus and school districts dedicating a professional development day, it’s a huge team effort.”

Keynote speaker Kim Bearden from the renowned Ron Clark Academy will headline the 2026 event. Bearden, co-founder and author of The Essential 55, will also lead breakout sessions throughout the day.

While outside experts like Bearden are invited to share their expertise, the majority of the workshops will be led by local educators. Topics will include balanced assessment, high-level instruction, early literacy strategies, and specialized training for coaches, including strength and conditioning sessions.

In addition to professional development, the event includes a vendor showcase during the extended lunch hour from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Businesses are invited to sign up and present their products and services directly to the region’s educators. Erickson said vendor participation helps keep the event affordable for schools and provides valuable exposure.

“Last time, we had about 30 vendors, and the feedback was phenomenal,” he said. “We’re hoping to fill those spots again. Vendors get direct access to over a thousand education professionals in one place.”

"All Hands on Deck" to return in 2026

After a 32-year hiatus, the Sky Ryders Drum &amp; Bugle Corps are back — and they’re already making waves on the national stage. Under the direction of Dale Antione, the corps completed its 2025 summer tour with standout performances in Iowa and Illinois and received top rankings in their competitive division.

The Sky Ryders launched their summer training camp, or “spring training,” in Hutchinson on June 30. Over the next two weeks, members — many experiencing their first taste of drum corps intensity — trained up to 10 hours a day in the Kansas heat, honing their music and marching skills at Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College’s Gowans Stadium.

Their hard work culminated in a well-attended dress rehearsal performance on July 7, which drew a crowd of 300 to 400 people. “The support we received from the Hutchinson community was incredible,” said Antione. “From local schools to community volunteers like Cleta Long, who helped with uniforms, everyone pitched in to make this a success.”

The Sky Ryders made a memorable appearance in Hutchinson’s Eagle Media Patriots Parade, which Antione called the largest crowd he’s seen in years. “The energy and reception were just phenomenal,” he said. “People were excited — and a little surprised — to see us back.”

The corps embarked on its short summer tour July 8, performing in Ankeny, Iowa, and Lyle, Illinois, while a scheduled show in Dubuque was canceled due to severe weather. Despite being a new corps in the SoundSport division, the Sky Ryders delivered high-scoring performances, earning the top score in their category at both competitions.

“The kids really stepped it up,” Antione said. “They were rewarded not just with strong scores, but with praise from the judges and standing ovations from the crowd.”

Auditions for the 2026 season will begin in December, with in-person and video options available. Students from freshman year of high school through college are eligible to try out.

Looking ahead, Antione said the organization hopes to expand next summer’s training to three weeks and extend the tour. The Sky Ryders will consider petitioning for evaluation to move into DCI’s Open Class for 2027, with an eventual goal of returning to World Class competition.

And there may be more excitement on the horizon for Hutchinson, Antione hopes that the city could host a DCI show again in 2026.

“It’s been an encouraging start,” Antione said. “We’re back. And we’re only getting better.”

Over the next two weeks, members — many experiencing their first taste of drum corps intensity — trained up to 10 hours a day in the Kansas heat, honing their music and marching skills at Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College’s Gowans Stadium.Their hard work culminated in a well-attended dress rehearsal performance on July 7, which drew a crowd of 300 to 400 people. “The support we received from the Hutchinson community was incredible,” said Antione. “From local schools to community volunteers like Cleta Long, who helped with uniforms, everyone pitched in to make this a success.”<div><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FSkyRydersPAF%2Fvideos%2F606621538737945%2F&show_text=true&width=560&t=0" width="560" height="429" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowFullScreen="true"></iframe></div>The Sky Ryders made a memorable appearance in Hutchinson’s Eagle Media Patriots Parade, which Antione called the largest crowd he’s seen in years. “The energy and reception were just phenomenal,” he said. “People were excited — and a little surprised — to see us back.”The corps embarked on its short summer tour July 8, performing in Ankeny, Iowa, and Lyle, Illinois, while a scheduled show in Dubuque was canceled due to severe weather. Despite being a new corps in the SoundSport division, the Sky Ryders delivered high-scoring performances, earning the top score in their category at both competitions.“The kids really stepped it up,” Antione said. “They were rewarded not just with strong scores, but with praise from the judges and standing ovations from the crowd.”<figure>

 </figure>Auditions for the 2026 season will begin in December, with in-person and video options available. Students from freshman year of high school through college are eligible to try out.Looking ahead, Antione said the organization hopes to expand next summer’s training to three weeks and extend the tour. The Sky Ryders will consider petitioning for evaluation to move into DCI’s Open Class for 2027, with an eventual goal of returning to World Class competition.And there may be more excitement on the horizon for Hutchinson, Antione hopes that the city could host a DCI show again in 2026.“It’s been an encouraging start,” Antione said. “We’re back. And we’re only getting better.”

Sky Ryders wrap up successful summer tour 

The Hutchinson Fire Department is strengthening its emergency medical response by expanding its roster of Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs), thanks to a growing partnership with Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp;

Fire officials recently sent five firefighters through the college’s AEMT program, building on a successful pilot initiative and bolstering the department’s ability to provide life-saving care in critical situations. The program is part of an ongoing effort to enhance pre-hospital treatment capacity beyond the basic EMT level.&nbsp;

“All of our firefighters are EMTs when they’re hired on,” said Rebecca Mendoza, the department’s EMS Training Captain, “We had five advanced EMTs prior to this class. Now, with the additional five, we’ve doubled our advanced care team. It means better service when seconds count.”&nbsp;

The AEMT certification allows firefighters to start IVs and administer more advanced medications than a basic EMT, especially in life-threatening emergencies. It also opens doors for long-term career growth.&nbsp;

Fire Captain Luke Raya&nbsp;said his motivation to pursue the AEMT credential stemmed from observing his truck’s engineer on calls.&nbsp;

“I always wondered what he was seeing and why he was doing what he did,” Raya said. “So I started learning from him, and I thought, if I ever retire and still want to work in the medical field, this would be a good path.”&nbsp;

Zack Richardson, another recent graduate of the program, said the training fulfills a longtime goal.&nbsp;

“Ever since I got my EMT license, I wanted to advance to the next level of care,” Richardson said. “I was blessed Hutchinson Fire gave me the opportunity to go through the AEMT program. It’s something I’ve been working toward for years.”&nbsp;

The training spans roughly two academic semesters, combining classroom instruction and clinical hands-on experience. The firefighters who completed the program are now better equipped to handle trauma and medical calls as demand for emergency services continues to grow.&nbsp;

The department’s investment in training reflects a broader commitment to public safety and professional development. Officials say additional AEMT classes may be offered in the future as Hutch Fire works to ensure all residents receive the highest standard of emergency medical care.&nbsp;
