HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of his town hall meeting in Dillon Hall in the Encampment Building at the Kansas State Fair Saturday night, Kansas U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall said he's been trying to get a bill voted on to require proof of citizenship at the federal level, and he gave an update on that.

"Chuck Schumer is not going to let us even vote for it on the Senate," Marshall said. "The House has already passed it, and they've attached it to the year end funding. Again, I'm trying not to bore you with all the politics of this. But the government's going to run out of money at the end of September. So they were trying to use that as leverage, saying, OK, we've got to pass funding to the government. Let's attach this bill to it that requires proof of citizenship when you register to vote. Chuck Schumer has had a fit and says he's going to blame the Republicans if we shut the government down, so I'm afraid it's stuck."

Ultimately, they have to pass a funding bill, but it's probably going to be a continuing resolution until the new Congress is seated.

"We're trying to keep the government open," Marshall said. "The fiscal year ends on September 30th. It's always disappointing to me that we get up to these strike midnight moments and we haven't done anything yet with it. Again, that's preplanned, though. This is exactly what Chuck Schumer wants. This is what the White House wants. They want to write the funding for the next year. I think where Republicans are at this point is to do what we would call a continuing resolution and fund it from now until the end of December and see what happens with the elections."

Marshall is hopeful that Republicans can win the White House and retain control in the House while getting control of the Senate.

Marshall sees CR on the horizon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team overcame a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to down No. 12 Iowa Central, 33-30, in overtime on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

Sophomore kicker Nestus Burger drilled a 36-yard field goal to give the Blue Dragons the win. This came after Iowa Central missed a 38-yard field goal wide left.

"There's a lot less pressure on your back going out there, knowing you only need three points," head coach Drew Dallas said. "You go out there and operate knowing you have a kicker like Nestus that has a strong leg, going into the wind."

Saturday marked the first overtime game for HutchCC since the Blue Dragons upended Iowa Central on Sept. 10, 2022, at Gowans Stadium, 31-28, a game that was won on a walk-off field goal by Cole Seagraves.

Hutchinson (3-0) trailed 30-16 with 6:19 remaining in the fourth quarter after quarterback Samari Collier threw an interception that was taken back for an Iowa Central (1-2) touchdown.

The Blue Dragons then orchestrated two touchdown drives within a three-minute span to tie the game and send it to overtime.

"Our backs were against the wall," Dallas said. "There really wasn't another option if we wanted to go out and win the game, you've got to spread the ball out and have the two-minute tempo. Proud of the way the guys handled it at the end. Our goal every week is to go 1-0 each week, doesn't matter how we did it."

Collier found Tre Brown on a 15-yard touchdown to cap an eight-play, 73-yard drive in just under two minutes to pull Hutch within 30-23 with 4:26 left.&nbsp;

After the Blue Dragons forced a Triton punt, Collier found Derrick Salley Jr. for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:19 left to tie the game at 30 apiece. The Salley Jr. touchdown capped a seven-play, 55-yard drive.

The Blue Dragons only had two leads in the game, 6-0, in the opening quarter, and the 33-30 final score.&nbsp;

Collier finished the game 23-of-40 passing for 300 yards and three touchdowns, while adding a team-high 89 yards rushing. The 300 yards passing is a new career-high for Collier.

Hutchinson is now 9-1 all-time against Iowa Central and 2-0 in overtime games under Dallas. The Blue Dragons are now 5-4 all-time in overtime games played.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons are off until Sept. 28, when they will host Ellsworth (0-3) at Gowans Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.

🏈 Burger kicks game-winner as No. 1 Hutch takes down No. 12 Iowa Central

INMAN, Kan. — The Inman Heritage Museum hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly finished Inman Harvest Mural on the Inman Grain Elevator on Friday.

The project commemorates the 150th anniversary of immigrants bringing Turkey Red wheat to Kansas, with Inman having a rich history with custom harvesting.&nbsp;

Marci Penner, the Executive Director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation was in attendance and had a simple, but strong message.

"We need to let this mural be a symbol of thinking big," Penner said. "Because of this mural, people will be coming into Inman, and they will wonder what we're all about. We're proud of what we have in our origins. I think what the museum is doing is also thinking big, so I hope we can get behind that and continue great things for Inman."

The mural was designed and painted by Mindy Allen, of Mindy's Murals. Allen took the design from her iPad onto the 108-foot tall and 49-foot wide grain elevator.

"I have to use a grid and so for this one with the size of it I used Doodle Grid," Allen said. "So basically doodle all over the wall and then I take a photo of those doodles, layer them over the top of the image and make it so I can see both, and then I can draw from that."

During the fundraising process of making the project happen, the Inman Heritage Museum received a $7500 grant through the "Rural Mural Program" from the Office of Rural Prosperity through the Kansas Department of Commerce.&nbsp;

"When we saw this application come in at the Office of Rural Prosperity, we were practically doing cartwheels down the hallway," Director of Rural Prosperity Trisha Purdon said. "Those of you that worked tirelessly to put this together, put together something so impactful, so huge, that the whole state, the whole country took notice."

Allen started the project in Inman in early June and finished the product in mid-July. The Junction City-based artist spent many hours in Inman.

"We would usually start around 7-7:30 and then work until about 2:30-3, somewhere in there," Allen said. "I don't know how many hours that is, but usually anywhere between seven to 10 hours is what I would work."

The project all came about in a quick time period after Allen was first contacted.

"When Ron (Regehr) first started talking to me about it, he kind of gave me his thoughts and ideas,"Allen said. "I did a design and he took it back to the others, and then to be able to know that was the initial talk and that I was excited about it, but not really sure to be able to see it become a reality is just amazing."

With the mural painted on the western side of the Inman Grain Elevator, Allen didn't have to battle too much of the Kansas sun, but she did have some challenges.

"The most difficult part is just having to deal with the weather," Allen said. "The wind, the rain, needing to take time off for that, or work in the wind, even though its difficult. The heat with this one wasn't so much of an issue, because the side the building faces, so we were in the shade a lot of the time."

The turnout for the ribbon cutting ceremony surprised Allen.

"It makes me feel like I'm on cloud nine," Allen said. "I never expect it and then when I come and there are all of these people to recognize it and pay tribute to it, it just makes me feel so special to be able to have been a part of it."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Data from AAA says it is more expensive to own a new car this year than it was last year.

"AAA's annual Your Driving Costs study reveals that the total cost to own and operate a new vehicle is up to $12,297," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "That's an increase of $115 from 2023. Some of the leading culprits in that rise are depreciation and finance charges of the vehicles."

With automakers adding more vehicle choices with major redesigns, AAA advises buyers to consider various factors associated with owning and operating a new vehicle to fully understand ownership costs.

"The sales weighted average price for a new vehicle is $38,883," Steward said. "That's an increase of a little over 1% over last year."

On average, cars in this year's YDC lose $4,680 in value through depreciation annually.&nbsp;

"Half-ton pickups are the most expensive to operate, followed by electric vehicles in general," Steward said. "Medium SUVs are third highest in cost. If you're looking at least expensive to operate, gas powered small sedans, followed by hybrid vehicles and then sub-compact SUVs."

If you are buying a new car,&nbsp;create a monthly or annual budget and factor in ownership and operating costs before purchase.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the second consecutive year, the Chiefs Trophy was on display at the Kansas State Fair. This year, instead of just one trophy on display, there were two, both Super Bowl LVII and LVIII trophies won by the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp;

"This was really cool to see in person," Tracy Conley from Bucklin said. "I honestly didn't know it was going to be here, but I heard people talking about it earlier and knew that I had to go see it. My husband is a Broncos fan, so I made sure to send him a picture of the trophies."

The trophies were on display at the House of Capper from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a pep rally was held at Peoples Bank and Trust Arena, as well. These events were all apart of Red Friday festivities at the fair.

"I have been here at the fair for both last year and this year to see the trophies," Cooper Grimes from Little River said. "I've never been to a game in Kansas City, but getting to see the trophies that Mahomes and the Chiefs held up after winning the Super Bowl is awesome."&nbsp;

Chiefs Super Bowl trophies on display at State Fair Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 26-year-old Hutchinson man was sentenced to 632 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections on Friday in Reno County District Court.&nbsp;

Briantey L. Baskin was sentenced to 620 months for attempted murder in the first degree, 41 months for aggravated battery, 12 months for aggravated assault and six months for criminal threat.

The attempted murder and battery charges will be served concurrently, while the assault and criminal threat charges will be served consecutively.

Baskin pleaded guilty on Aug. 15 to all four charges.

Baskin was arrested on May 9 after stabbing a man near First Avenue and Main Street in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police made an arrest connected to a disturbance Thursday morning.

According to a release from Capt. Dayton Gates, at approximately 8:33 a.m., officers were dispatched to First Avenue and Main Street for a disturbance. When officers arrived on the scene, they located a male victim with a laceration to his body. Another victim reported a male threatening him with a knife during the same incident.

The injured victim was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment. He is currently in stable condition. Briantey L. Baskin, 26-year-old male of Hutchinson, was arrested for attempted murder in the first degree and aggravated assault.

Hutchinson man sentenced for May stabbing 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Heading into the final weekend of the Kansas State Fair, the numbers have been solid thus far. 

At Friday morning's Kansas State Fair Board meeting, General Manager Bryan Schulz said attendance through Thursday was over 220,000, with big days expected for Chiefs Red Friday and the Riley Green concert Saturday night.

The carnival is also ahead of last year's pace on money collections, with a strong Monday due to area kids being out of school really helping this year.

Speaking of the Riley Green concert, Schulz expects that to be the largest attendance in a few years, with over 7,000 expected on Saturday night. 

The hope is that they can get strong walk-up numbers for Pop Evil Friday night and that the weather is not too warm and they can get strong numbers for the Sunday afternoon Oak Ridge Boys concert to close out the fair.

🏈 Week 2 area high school schedule

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dan Murray with NFIB Kansas is not surprised by the fact that their&nbsp;Small Business Optimism Index fell in August.

"Our Small Business Index, which is over 50 years of data, it fell by two and a half points in August, which erases minor gains that we experienced in July," Murray said. "This represents the 32nd consecutive month below the 50-year average of 98. The Uncertainty Index rose to 92, its highest level since October of 2020. Inflation remains the top issue amongst small business owners. Twenty-four percent of owners reported it as their top small business operating issue down one point in July."

There is an issue on the horizon if Congress does not act to make the tax relief in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent.

"In the moment, high inflation, the inability to find workers continue to be a problem for small business owners," Murray said. "As they look out on the horizon, they will experience a massive tax hike in 2025 or the 2026 year, if we don't make permanent the small business deduction."

Inflation in costs of materials and labor is having to be passed on to small business customers, as well.

"When we looked at this most recent study, price hikes were the most frequent in the finance, retail, construction, and manufacturing sectors," Murray said.&nbsp; "Twenty-five percent of small business owners planned price hikes in August, so that is certainly top of the mind for particularly finance, retail, construction, and manufacturing."

Of the 62% of small business owners trying to hire in August, 90% reported few or no qualified applicants for the positions they were trying to fill.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Tourism unveiled its Mobile Visitor Center (MVC) on Thursday at the Kansas State Fair with a ribbon cutting inside the Pride of Kansas building.

 The MVC will attend major sporting events, fairs, trade shows and festivals in and out of the state to help attract guests to visit Kansas. 

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland and&nbsp;Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed joined Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe at the event on Thursday.

“Kansas is home to endless views, unique geography, one of a kind sights, vibrant communities and amazing people," Reed said. "Whether its a road trip that takes you to the Gypsum Hills, a treasure hunt on US-36, a camping trip to one of our many beautiful lakes, or hiking and biking on over 800 miles of biking and pedestrian trails in our state, Kansas is a destination for all road trips. Today, I am proud to be a part of the unveiling of the Kansas Mobile Visitors Center, which will provide us with the opportunity to showcase our amazing state."

Toland talked about how the idea and vision came about for the MVC.

"About a year and a half ago we had a series of conversations with the Kansas Tourism team," Toland said. "They were about the World Cup and specifically the east side of the state and the need for a visitors information center somewhere along I-70. So we had some conversations and decided to talk to KDOT to see what we could do."

Toland says Reed and his staff listened to the idea and had an even better vision.

"KDOT came with a concept of a mobile visitor center," Toland said. "They did some research about what cities around the country had been doing. There is a model where you don't wait for them to come to you, you go to them. You go to the people you want to bring to your place."

Toland and his staff were skeptical of this vision in the beginning, but now has a different opinion.

"They (KDOT) were right," Toland said. "They were absolutely right that we need to think differently about how we bring people to Kansas. It's not just about expecting them to pull off the highway and stop at our place. We need to go to Dallas, to Denver, to Ames, Iowa, to Lincoln, Nebraska, to Chicago and make the case for why they should come here."&nbsp;

Toland was very appreciative and supportive for all of the hard work done to bring visitors to the Sunflower State by Kansas Tourism and its Director Bridgette Jobe.

"I also want to think the Kansas Tourism team, because they are always open to those new ideas," Toland said. "Kansas has now achieved visitation numbers that are dramatically above where we were pre-COVID. We've got more people to come to Kansas than ever before, and that's because this team is getting out there and hustling. They're doing it in-person, they're going to the trade shows and our numbers are way up."

The van will hit the road shortly after the Kansas State Fair to make its debut outside of the state.

"I think two days after the fair is over he (Kevin Crockett) is heading to Nebraska City for a major event," Jobe said. "We have it scheduled to be on the road every week between now and the end of the year."

Ribbon cutting for Mobile Visitors Center at State Fair Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Prices at the pump are continuing a general downward trend for fuel buyers, according to Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas.

"The average gas price in Kansas is $2.96 a gallon," Steward said. "We're under that $3 a gallon threshold. Currently, 13 states across the country have a sub-$3 average. We're definitely trending down in many areas of the country."

"Right now, demand is pretty light in the United States," Steward said. "It has been for a while. Crude oil prices have been fairly stable to falling. We do have a situation with Hurricane Francine, which has bumped up prices one to one and a half percent."

Assuming that damage from Francine doesn't tighten gasoline stocks, prices still could go lower.

"They assess after the storm passes," Steward said. "Apparently, about 38 or 39% of Gulf production was temporarily off line as the hurricane passed through. Now, the assessment stage happens, where they look for damage. Certainly, there's power outages that impact refineries, as well. It may be a short-lived impact of that hurricane."

With demand traditionally dropping in the fall months and the less expensive winter blend of gas entering the system, there's a good opportunity for even more savings in the coming weeks.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East 1st and North Walnut.

Five years after its inception, Hutchinson wanted a YMCA.

In 1876, the YMCA was organized by T.J. Templin, a Methodist minister.

By 1890, the YMCA was housed in the upstairs rooms above the American National Bank at 22 N. Main St.

In 1909, the Commercial Club raised funds to construct a new building at 100 N. Walnut.

Completed in 1911, construction cost $58,000 — equipment was $28,000. The building included a swimming pool, gym, bowling alley, reading rooms and sleeping rooms. The first photo shows that building in 1930.

The first floor was a bit below grade. The second photo shows the main desk in 1950 from the front door.

In 1955, the Santa Fe Railway Station was demolished and Walnut street was opened up for through traffic. The third photo shows the YMCA during that construction.

In 1959, this building was razed and Salt City Federal Savings &amp; Loan built a new structure here. The fourth photo shows construction beginning at that location.

From 1983 to 2001, the Kansas Farm Services were located there. The fifth photo shows the current building occupants, now addressed as 100 E. 1st,  the United Methodist Health Ministry.

📷 Throwback Thursday: YMCA - Vol. 87

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Some of the equipment is on site for the demolition of the old St. Elizabeth Hospital at 500 West 20th.

"We're starting demolition this week," said Clint Nelson with Interfaith Housing. "We still have some startup pieces that we need to need to tend to when you get security fence up and kind of get everything staged for the big project, but our contractor believes that by the end of this week, they made it start taking down the actual structure and the project itself is estimated to be six weeks start to finish."

The intent is for that to be a developable lot once the demo work is done.

"The finish on this contract is a full backfill and compaction, grading and overseeding," Nelson said. "Until we get to the point of starting a new development on that site, it will be just open green space."

The long-term goal is more affordable housing in that area.

"Our intent is to redevelop that site with home buyer units," Nelson said. "Kind of middle income, mid range home buyer units. We're going to take our time to make sure we're selecting a design and a build that's appropriate for that neighborhood. We would hope by mid 2025, that we'll have all the pieces in place and have our funding commitments in place and be able to start rebuilding on that site."

The goal is to allow two-income families to be able to afford to buy in the new development. Interfaith will also seek grant funding to help with that, as well.

St. Elizabeth demo to start this week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach talked to Hutch Post at the Kansas State Fair. He's proud of the work his team has done to combat federal overreach.

"We've had a number of victories against the Biden administration," Kobach said. "I'm really pleased with our team, one of which was the Title IX case, where the Biden administration is trying to use its regulatory authority, which it doesn't have in this instance, to force colleges and high schools to allow biological males to use women's restrooms, locker rooms, showers, and a whole host of other things. And we won that case in Kansas District Court. The U.S. Department of Justice is moving on up to the Court of Appeals, and we hope to win there as well. We had another victory in a case where the Biden administration is trying to give the right to unionize to legal alien farm workers, farm workers who have H-2A visas, and we beat them in District Court on that issue as well. And then of course the student loans question, where the Biden administration is trying to forgive student loans without proper authority, we beat them in that case as well, so we're racking up some victories for the Constitution and for the people of Kansas."

The expansion of administrative action without attempts to get legislation through Congress has been a relatively recent phenomenon.

"One change occurred about 20 years ago, 15 years ago, that has really changed the role of State Attorney General, and that is that the various U.S. courts of appeals, the various circuits have opened up standing, meaning they've allowed states to come in as plaintiffs, where maybe 30 years ago they would not have allowed the state to sue," Kobach said. "That's been the biggest change. Then you have the other big change, which is the Biden administration, and before that the Obama administration, just pushing the envelope of what they try to do. You know, previously they would try to move something through Congress. Now they don't even bother. They just go straight to a regulatory agency and push a regulation that is unconstitutional and probably contrary to statute, in the case of, such as the Title IX one or the attempt to forgive student loans. That's another big change. You've got an overreaching administration, which we didn't see 20 years ago, and you've got rules of standing that allow the states to come in and challenge it."

Kobach's office is also working on another administrative strategy, called 'sue and settle', when an administration gets a friend to sue them and then settles with that friend to bypass the administrative law process.

"Kansas is right now leading an effort to stop this sue and settle arrangement where an administration has a friendly lawsuit, and then they settle it, and they achieve what they wanted by not even issuing a regulation. They just have a settlement and a lawsuit," Kobach said. "The case is called East Bay Sanctuary, and it's in the Ninth Circuit out of California. And that's exactly what happened there. The plaintiffs got a friendly settlement or in a friendly negotiation with the U.S. Department of Justice, and the state of Kansas, along with a couple of other states, were jumping in and saying, no, no, no, you don't. We want to intervene in this case and represent the people of the United States. That case is about the plaintiffs trying to basically wipe away a good immigration regulation that would make it harder for these illegal aliens to falsely claim asylum, and it would make it harder for them to come in anywhere they want along the border, and then if they get caught, say, oh, I'm here for asylum. And so anyway, it's a great regulation. We're there to defend it, and we're trying to intervene, and we're asking the U.S. Supreme Court to allow us to intervene to stop this sue and settle scheme, and we should have an answer from the U.S. Supreme Court soon."

That case is about the plaintiffs trying to basically wipe away a good immigration regulation that would make it harder for these illegal aliens to falsely claim asylum, and it would make it harder for them to come in anywhere they want along the border, and then if they get caught, say, oh, I'm here for asylum. And so anyway, it's a great regulation.
