HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2024 racing season at the Kansas State Fairgrounds will close with some fun on Saturday night. 

"This is a last hurrah on Saturday," said Phil Nightingale with Salt City Racing. "I can't believe the year is over. The year's went so fast. It's been so fun and so exciting with everything we've got going on, but we're going to throw a real twist in it."

It's an open night with three classes racing.

"That's where there's very few rules. Bring what you want," Nightingale said. "We've got a list of four or five rules per class, and so it ought to be fun and exciting to get some other cars out there from that part and just see what happens. So we're going to have the open A mods, B mods, and stock cars."

This should broaden the number of drivers that can come try out the half-mile.

"There's going to be a lot of different drivers, I believe, will be there this weekend," Nightingale said.&nbsp; "You know, we can't accommodate every class throughout the year that's out there in the racing world, so this is a way that we can get every class that's possible around us that race, that they can put their cars on that half mile and go have some fun."

Season finale at Fairgrounds Saturday night

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The opening reception for the members show at the Hutchinson Art Center is Friday.

"It's so much more than painting," said Barbara Withrow, who serves on the Art Center board. "Our artistic community here in Hutchinson is large and varied. We have a beautiful piece of furniture and we have sculpture we have glass we have of course paintings in all kinds of mediums, but what makes this show exciting and it's always well received by the community is the fact that these are local artists. I continue to be amazed at the talent that is in this community. It's just remarkable."

Friday's event is free, but membership in the Art Association is reasonable, as well.

&nbsp;"Student or military membership is $20," said John Eberly with the Art Center. "Individual membership runs from 30 to 35 dollars and a family and household can get everybody in for 40 bucks."

There will be dozens of works to see, and some of them will be for sale, too.

"The other perks of membership I might add you can all year round sell your work in the consignment gallery in the gift shop," You get 10% off all purchases in the gift shop when you're a member at the Art Center."

The Hutchinson Art Center is at 405 North Washington. The event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday is sponsored by First National Bank of Hutchinson.

🏈 Week 5 area high school schedule

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Coats for Kids drive is underway at Ineeda Cleaners. The event began on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and will run through Thursday, Oct. 31.

"Ineeda Cleaners at 13th and Main is our collection spot for people to bring gently used coats, hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, anything that the community can use to help keep people warm and comfortable in those winter months," Rachel Nelson with Ineeda Cleaners said. "Then we clean them and deliver them to Salvation Army for their distribution day."

The Coats for Kids drive was started by former Ineeda Cleaners owner, John Neal.

"John Neal was the owner at the time that the first idea started," Nelson said. "Local radio personality, Dan Deming, collaborated with John and that's how it originally got started."

Nelson and her husband, Chris, took over the ownership of Ineeda Cleaners and elected to keep the annual drive going.

"For Chris and I, we both grew up in Hutchinson and obviously it's wonderful to have the opportunity to use your talent and help people," Nelson said. "So it was an easy decision, of course we wanted to be a part of something that can help the community, but most especially the kids, who need coats when they're outside at school or walking to school, or just being outside and being warm."

Nelson and her team want to beat the Kansas winter by collecting the donations in October.

"We want to be ready for that Kansas winter, you never know when it's going to start," Nelson said. "We don't want to wait until it's a holiday or a Christmas gift or anything like that, we want to get out in front of the weather and make sure everyone is ready to go before we have some crazy blizzard or you never know."&nbsp;

Although Nelson and her team at Ineeda Cleaners do not get to see the children when they're picking up the coats, they do see the joy in people dropping off donations.

"The people who are bringing us donations, they are heartfelt," Nelson said. "When they leave those coats, they put effort into cleaning out their closets and they drop them off and they just have a big smile. They have a generous heart,&nbsp; and they're happy to help us help other people. We're kind of just the middle man of the process, but the community's heart is so big, and I know it brings comfort and joy to the people that are getting those nice coats, or a grandma, or an aunt, or an uncle who's taking care of kids that can get that child a coat and not have to worry about the expense of it. Really, the joy is knowing that we're making a difference, but really those people coming into our store are so happy to help."\

The Salvation Army does the coat distribution in November.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2024 Ride Like MADD Poker Run presented by Bretz Injury Law is coming up this weekend.

The run will take place in Wichita on Saturday, Oct. 5 with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. at Jay Hatfield Honda Powerhouse, 11212 E Kellogg Drive.

This poker run helps raise funds and awareness for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in the effort to stop drunk and drugged driving.

"When MADD was started in 1980, there were about 40,000 Americans who were killed by drunk drivers a year. That number got down to as low as about 10,000 right before COVID," Matt Bretz said. "Since COVID occurred, it's gone up to about 13,000 Americans killed a year by drunk and drugged driving. It's a real issue. And MADD has been at the forefront. I'm on the board of directors on the national board of MADD. We work really on two main areas. One is supporting victims and helping them through the process and survivors, people who have lost family members. The other thing is raising awareness of the dangers of drunk and drugged driving and to put an end to it."

Entry is $25 a hand or $50 for 3 hands with proceeds benefitting MADD of Kansas. Payouts are as follows: 25% for the best hand, 15% for the second best hand, and 10% for the worst hand. Stops include Cycle Gear, Pinkies, Savage Cycles, Freedom Road Cycles, and Twister City Harley-Davidson. A free lunch will be served after the run courtesy of Twister City and the PrairieThunder HOG Chapter. There will be a $5 raffle and plenty of door prizes. Donations are accepted and all vehicles are welcome.

"One of the biggest things we've done recently was passage of the HALT Act that would include technology in new cars that prevents drunk driving estimated to save 10,000 lives a year," Bretz said. "The technology discussed in the HALT Act has been around since 2006. It's on some European cars already. And it's passive technology. The driver sits in the car. It detects whether you're impaired. And if you're impaired, it won't let you start the engine."

This year, the ride is in memory of Ashley Austin, who lost her life to an impaired driver on Dec. 19, 2023. Ashley will be forever remembered as a beloved agriculture education teacher at Canton-Galva High School. Growing up on a farm fostered her passion for agriculture, leading her to start the first FFA program for USD 419. Her dedication to her students will have long-lasting effects on the present and future generations. Ashley is greatly loved and deeply missed by her family, friends, students, and her dog Rowan.

"There are people every weekend here in Hutchinson and across Reno County, there are people every weekend who get arrested for drunk driving, and thank goodness, most people don't kill anyone when they do it, but sometimes they do," Bretz said. "This technology keeps people from having to make the choice. You know, if they if they leave the bar and they've only had a couple and they think that they're fine and their car won't start, you know, then there's no shame in going back inside and saying, you know, it turns out, I guess I've had a little bit more than I thought I did."

Poker run for MADD Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman told Hutch Post they are in the middle of updating the district's strategic plan.

"It has been a process," Couchman said. "We started it a couple months ago by putting together a survey and we are using the Kansas Association of School Boards and they are facilitating this process. They come in and they create a survey. They actually distribute the survey. Obviously, we help push it out to our staff and our community and our parents. It was pushed out on social media, sent through email. We gathered a bunch of data. In fact, we had a huge response. We had like 1,100 surveys returned, which is fantastic response in our community."

KASB then makes sure the data is able to be used for further work.

"We've had two focus groups where we had about 45 community members, parents, staff members," Couchman said. "We tried to make sure that we had different various factions represented on that focus group. Then they've spent two evenings in the last few weeks looking at that data, narrowing it down to themes, creating action plans, suggested action plans and suggested measurements. That's where we're at right now."

The final decisions will be at the school board level.

"We will look at it as an administrative group and also as a board of education," Couchman said. "In the end, the board of education will then kind of tweak and refine our final action plan and our themes. Right now, the four themes that they were looking at were student opportunities, operations and resources. That would be everything from budget to, I suppose, facilities would be underneath there, to upkeep, to anything having to do with that. Then we also had culture and community engagement. We'll see whether or not those stay with those four, or if we narrow it down to three."

The intent is once they have direction from the board, an administrator will take the lead on each of the remaining themes.

Buhler USD 313 doing strategic planning

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Former President Donald Trump said on the campaign trail in September that he would put large tariffs on John Deere if they move their jobs to Mexico. Raj Bhala, Brenneisen Distinguished Professor at KU Law, explained some of the potential mechanisms a President could use to accomplish that.

"There are a number of legal levers the president could use," Bhala said. "The first is the president could use section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and say that the agricultural machinery that is being imported into the United States impairs the national security of the United States. We have to have a viable farm sector, and to do that, we have to have excellent domestically made farm equipment to harvest agricultural goods. And we can't be dependent on Chinese or even U.S. companies that are making their equipment overseas. Now, this was, of course, you'll remember, this was exactly the argument made on countries China and Canada on steel and aluminum. Section 232, the national security argument, was what the Trump administration used. Another possibility would be section 201 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to take action against import surges that are causing or threatening to cause serious injury to a U.S. industry, the kind of industry you just mentioned that's occurring in Kansas and in Iowa. If it can be shown that it is imports of agricultural machinery that are the cause of that injury, then section 201 would allow the president to impose tariffs on foreign made equipment. That includes, again, equipment made overseas by a U.S. multinational. Now, we've seen section 201 used during the Trump administration with respect to washing machines and solar equipment. So that's the second mechanism."

There's also Section 301, which says that a foreign government is engaging in an act, policy, or practice that is unfair or discriminatory or unreasonable against the United States, and that is a burden or restriction on U.S. commerce. That is much less likely, due to the differences in the relationship between Mexico and the U.S. as opposed to China. However, there is another avenue a chief executive could take.

"The president could simply, to use the Nike marketing line, he could just do it," Bhala said. "In other words, the president could just simply impose, as President Trump has talked about doing, a tariff of 10% across the board, or 60% on all Chinese goods, or 200% on John Deere equipment made in Mexico. The problem with that, it is probably going to be illegal under both U.S. law and our treaty obligations under the World Trade Organization agreement and under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement or USMCA. I would note that President Nixon, well, he simply imposed a 10% tariff on imports back around 1971, all imports to stem a tide of imports and restore America's balance of payment position as we were coming off the gold standard. And it was quite successful in that time. He took it off after about three months, and there was never really much of a legal challenge that was successful anyway to President Nixon's actions."

Part of that may have been because those actions didn't last very long. More to the point, do tariffs work when they are used?

"I hate to give you the lawyer's answer, but I think the lawyer's answer is the best one, is really it depends," Bhala said. "It depends on a number of factors. It depends, for example, on how high, how stiff the tariff is.&nbsp;A small tariff, you know, 5%, 10%, it may be possible for the producer, exporter overseas and the importer in the United States to absorb the tariffs, particularly if the competitors, the domestic competitors are raising their prices in an, say, an inflationary environment. A 200% of tariffs, no, that can't be absorbed. Another factor on which whether tariffs are effective depends is what economists call the elasticity, the price elasticity, and the elasticity of substitution for the good in question. How easy, for example, is it for consumers of John Deere goods to purchase other farm goods? That goes to the elasticity of substitution. If they have other alternatives, then imposing the tariff is simply going to cause the farmers to shift to other producers of a like farm product."

The problem is that the issue is larger than just one sector of an economy, particularly if retailiatory measures are taken by the other country.

"In other words, does, say, Mexico, if Mexico is where the John Deere equipment is now being made, retaliates against the United States on U.S. exports to Mexico, hitting other sectors? For example, let's talk about exports of wheat or other Kansas or Missouri farm products, farm commodities to Mexico. If Mexico whacks our farmers with tariffs, then we could say that regardless of the efficacy of keeping John Deere jobs in the United States, we've hurt our export-oriented farmers and their incomes. We have seen, of course, tit-for-tat retaliation by China in the trade war with China. We should not expect Mexico would roll over and play dead against U.S. tariffs on products that are being made in Mexico and shipped to the U.S. So we look at the first of the market itself, the ag equipment. Then we look at the broader economic assessment of how other products have been affected. And then third, what do tariffs do to our overall status as the world leader in advancing free markets?"

These are all open questions as Americans get ready to go to the polls in November. Not that trade policy alone will get someone to vote one way or the other, but it is a component of the United States place in the world, which should be a concern when choosing who to support.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Former President Donald Trump said on the campaign trail in September that he would put large tariffs on John Deere if they move their jobs to Mexico. Raj Bhala, Brenneisen Distinguished Professor at KU Law, explained some of the potential mechanisms a President could use to accomplish that."There are a number of legal levers the president could use," Bhala said. "The first is the president could use section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and say that the agricultural machinery that is being imported into the United States impairs the national security of the United States. We have to have a viable farm sector, and to do that, we have to have excellent domestically made farm equipment to harvest agricultural goods. And we can't be dependent on Chinese or even U.S. companies that are making their equipment overseas. Now, this was, of course, you'll remember, this was exactly the argument made on countries China and Canada on steel and aluminum. Section 232, the national security argument, was what the Trump administration used. Another possibility would be section 201 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to take action against import surges that are causing or threatening to cause serious injury to a U.S. industry, the kind of industry you just mentioned that's occurring in Kansas and in Iowa. If it can be shown that it is imports of agricultural machinery that are the cause of that injury, then section 201 would allow the president to impose tariffs on foreign made equipment. That includes, again, equipment made overseas by a U.S. multinational. Now, we've seen section 201 used during the Trump administration with respect to washing machines and solar equipment. So that's the second mechanism."There's also Section 301, which says that a foreign government is engaging in an act, policy, or practice that is unfair or discriminatory or unreasonable against the United States, and that is a burden or restriction on U.S. commerce. That is much less likely, due to the differences in the relationship between Mexico and the U.S. as opposed to China. However, there is another avenue a chief executive could take."The president could simply, to use the Nike marketing line, he could just do it," Bhala said. "In other words, the president could just simply impose, as President Trump has talked about doing, a tariff of 10% across the board, or 60% on all Chinese goods, or 200% on John Deere equipment made in Mexico. The problem with that, it is probably going to be illegal under both U.S. law and our treaty obligations under the World Trade Organization agreement and under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement or USMCA. I would note that President Nixon, well, he simply imposed a 10% tariff on imports back around 1971, all imports to stem a tide of imports and restore America's balance of payment position as we were coming off the gold standard. And it was quite successful in that time. He took it off after about three months, and there was never really much of a legal challenge that was successful anyway to President Nixon's actions."Part of that may have been because those actions didn't last very long. More to the point, do tariffs work when they are used?"I hate to give you the lawyer's answer, but I think the lawyer's answer is the best one, is really it depends," Bhala said. "It depends on a number of factors. It depends, for example, on how high, how stiff the tariff is.&nbsp;A small tariff, you know, 5%, 10%, it may be possible for the producer, exporter overseas and the importer in the United States to absorb the tariffs, particularly if the competitors, the domestic competitors are raising their prices in an, say, an inflationary environment. A 200% of tariffs, no, that can't be absorbed. Another factor on which whether tariffs are effective depends is what economists call the elasticity, the price elasticity, and the elasticity of substitution for the good in question. How easy, for example, is it for consumers of John Deere goods to purchase other farm goods? That goes to the elasticity of substitution. If they have other alternatives, then imposing the tariff is simply going to cause the farmers to shift to other producers of a like farm product."The problem is that the issue is larger than just one sector of an economy, particularly if retailiatory measures are taken by the other country."In other words, does, say, Mexico, if Mexico is where the John Deere equipment is now being made, retaliates against the United States on U.S. exports to Mexico, hitting other sectors? For example, let's talk about exports of wheat or other Kansas or Missouri farm products, farm commodities to Mexico. If Mexico whacks our farmers with tariffs, then we could say that regardless of the efficacy of keeping John Deere jobs in the United States, we've hurt our export-oriented farmers and their incomes. We have seen, of course, tit-for-tat retaliation by China in the trade war with China. We should not expect Mexico would roll over and play dead against U.S. tariffs on products that are being made in Mexico and shipped to the U.S. So we look at the first of the market itself, the ag equipment. Streets closed for HutchFest and Rod Run

INMAN, Kan. — The Inman High School volleyball team is off to a 23-1 start on the season and ranked No. 1 in the Kansas Volleyball Association (KVA) rankings.&nbsp;

The Teutons, which have placed fourth place the past two seasons at the state tournament, are ready to take that next step under head coach Kathy Russell, who accepted the job last February. Russell is well-known in the area, having coached at Buhler and Haven, as well as several years as a club coach.

"It's like a dream for a coach to walk into something like that," Russell said. "When I walked in they had all the talent, but they had no guidance, and they can't do it alone. We're working together and bond together, so they are just thriving at what I'm selling. It's not about you, it's about your team and what you can do for your team. They are all diving in and just doing great things."&nbsp;

The players are poised to accomplish their goal of claiming the state title next month.

"That's their goal, that's what they want, and they have all the talent," Russell said. "It takes discipline, teamwork, them working together to help each other be the best that we can be, and I think we have all of those things. The girls are playing with confidence and walking into the gym, the girls are on fire, they just want to be the best that they can be. They're like little sponges."

The Teutons' lone loss this season came on Sept. 14 to Cheney in three sets, 20-25, 28-26, 20-25.

"Cheney is well-coached and are a very scrappy team," Russell said. "They're not very big, but we kept swinging at them, we weren't patient enough and kind of played soft. We were just a little off that day. Cheney played well and they deserved to win, but I'd love to meet up with them again. I think it was good for the girls to get a loss, because they don't like that taste in their mouth, so it was kind of a blessing in disguise."

The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) has implemented a new postseason format for classes 3-1A for the 2024 season. The teams will be placed into four groupings for regional play, with each group having two quads. The format is more similar to how the larger classifications have done it in the years past in volleyball and basketball.

"We have so many teams in 2A, so it's going to be different," Russell said. "We pulled some really tough teams in there, so we're going to have to beat them all anyway to get where we want to get, so it doesn't matter where we meet them."

Russell is hopeful the tough competition the Teutons have played in the regular season will pay off come postseason.

"I love the competition, like I said earlier, that's the only way we're going to get better," Russell said. "We want to play tough teams, so we look forward to it. That's something we're training for and preparing the girls for."

The Teutons are led by two-time all-state selection, and <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/9c3f101e-bbe2-4f5f-ae09-03ca272b3436">Utah commit</a>, Suttyn Harris. The 5-foot-11 junior outside hitter is off to another strong year.

"Suttyn is an amazing young lady," Russell said. "She's just really committed to her team, she's an excellent teammate, she knows the game, she's been playing it for awhile. I coached her back when I think she was in sixth grade, I taught some lessons to her, so she's come a long way since then. She's a gamer, she just wants to win and wants her teammates to do well, so we're thrilled that she's on our team. She's just an all-around kid, not only on the court, but off the court as well. She works hard to be the best she can be."

Russell knew she had talent when she took the job at Inman, but that's not the only thing that has caught her eye since the first day of practice.

"I knew that we had a lot of talent on the team, but not only that, we have an amazing work ethic," Russell said. "During the offseason, they were just working so hard in the weight room and so determined. I've got a full team of those girls, and it's kind of like a dream team as a coach to walk in and have girls so dedicated and want to be the best that they can be."

"I have eight strong core girls that I can play in any position I needed to," Russell said. "I also have a bench that's really strong. My middles, Morgan Froese and Brooke Aden, they're both really strong in the middle. I also have Kenna Woods who plays defense in club ball, but here she plays outside and she can just rip the ball, too. My setters are Taylor Froese, a sophomore, and Maddi Parsons, a freshman, I could move them wherever I want. I can switch between a 5-1 or a 6-2, whatever we need to do."

Russell has been around the game of volleyball for a number of years, but she says this team is special.

"I have been in it a long time and have seen some really good players, but this group is just something special," Russell said. "They are just amazing young ladies and I am just thrilled to be apart of this."

One thing that Russell said made taking the job even better was the fact she gets to coach alongside her daughter, Emme, who played at HutchCC and then at Arkansas State.&nbsp;

"She's been a head coach and is also a big part of this program," Russell said. "Between Emily and our other assistant,&nbsp;Nicole McClellan, we have all the pieces of the puzzle put together and we're just improving every time we step on the floor."

The Teutons will host class 1A-Division I No.1-ranked Little River tonight for a best-of-5 match against the Redskins.&nbsp;

🏐 'It's kind of like a dream team' Teutons thriving as No. 1 team in class 2A

STERLING, Kan. — The Sterling High School football team has one of the more difficult schedules in class 1A, but the Black Bears have used that to their advantage and have found themselves sitting at 2-2, following back-to-back wins.&nbsp;

"We have just a buzzsaw of a schedule, and we knew that going into the year," Sterling head coach Brent Schneider said. "The thing that we kind of say is we play Conway and they won state last year and they're great, and we play Medicine Lodge and in my opinion they're probably the second best team in the state. We play good football teams, and the way we spin it is there is nobody we're going to face in districts or playoffs that play football that we haven't seen before. That's kind of what we take pride in, that we play a tough schedule, and that we fight and grind."

The Black Bears graduated a strong senior class that helped the team go 6-4 last fall. Sterling opened this season with a pair of losses to Sedgwick, 42-13, and Moundridge, 28-7.

"We have about seven starters on both sides of the ball that haven't played a lot of varsity football," Schneider said. "We opened the season with a really good Sedgwick team that I think has 16 seniors, and then a really good Moundridge team who's coming up from 8-man, but has a really good senior and junior class. They were definitely challenging opening games to start the season, but I was very proud of how our kids just kept getting better every day."

Schneider knew it was going to take a little bit of time for his team to get up to speed at the varsity level. The Black Bears picked up its first win of the year in Week 3 over Inman, 21-20, handing the Teutons its first loss.

"We put it together in a game against Inman where there was a lot of adversity," Schneider said. "We had a late start with some thunderstorm stuff, so we spent an hour and a half in a hot gym. They had their homecoming week, so we were kind of fighting that stuff, and then we had a kid get stretchered off in the third quarter with some muscle spasms in his neck that they were pretty concerned about about, so I was just proud of how our team responded there."

The Black Bears added another win in Week 4, downing then-undefeated Ellinwood, 41-35.

"We kind of got punched in the mouth a little bit by Ellinwood," Schneider said. "We responded very well, and told our kids that's kind of the benefit of having difficult games early in the season, because we've been challenged and I thought that was the biggest reason we were able to come back in the second half against Ellinwood."

The Black Bears run the flexbone offense and are led by junior Zane Farney at tailback, the two-time all-state selection is off to another strong campaign. As a sophomore Farney rushed for 1,500 yards, and so far this year is up to 577 yards for a 144-yard average per game. Junior Wyatt Newberry has 277 yards rushing for three touchdowns and a nine-yard average per attempt. Sterling as a team has rushed for nearly 300 yards per game to go along with 10 touchdowns.&nbsp;

Junior Boston Ekart has caught all five passes thrown by junior Logan Isaac for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Isaac has also been a threat on the ground with 135 yards.

One of the big reasons for the Black Bear success has been the offensive line, a brand new unit at the varsity level this year.

"Everybody on our offensive line is new to varsity football," Schneider said. "That unit is led by Waylon Schmidt, he's a senior, and he has done a really nice job with his leadership on that front."

The Sterling defense has made some changes early in the season.

"We have kind of been trying to find our identity on defense," Schneider said. "We changed some things around in Week 2, and really have been figuring things out. We played well against Inman, and then we turned around and Ellinwood did some things we weren't prepared for. Kevin Ploutz and Teyton Savage have been anchoring us up front. We're really young at the linebacker position, but we've got some really good athletes there."

Schneider says to knock off Medicine Lodge (3-1) on the road this week all comes down to execution.

"We've got to execute," Schneider said. "Medicine Lodge had a really good game plan for our run game last year, and we did some nice things against it, but it's just kind of those things you have to stick with it. Sometimes it's tough to watch from the stands because it's a little bit slow going, but you just stick with it and then the run game starts popping. We need to possess the ball and keep it out of their quarterbacks hands, he's a great kid and an all-state athlete, probably one of the better quarterbacks in all of 3-2-1A."

The Black Bears are hoping for a different outcome than last year, a game in which Sterling lost at home to Medicine Lodge, 21-20. The Black Bears went for the 2-point conversion and the win, but failed and suffered the loss.

"It was a dogfight and a lot of good stuff," Schneider said. "I do know they're going to fast and physical."

Schneider is happy with where the program is in his sixth year as the Black Bears head coach.

"When we really struggling and our numbers were really low, one thing as a coaching staff and administration we talked about is that we wanted to really make the culture something we should be proud of," Schneider said. "I really do think that we're there. I hear compliments about how are kids act and behave in the community. I just had a compliment the other day about how a group of our kids were at the local cafe, and how they interacted with the community members and how they cleaned up after themselves. It's really great to hear things like that and see how our kids act in the hallways and I couldn't be more proud. We always say that we want to raise young men of character, and you can't guarantee the wins and the losses, but I got into coaching because I had great role models growing up and I kind of want to return the favor on that.&nbsp;

The Black Bears only have three seniors, but Schneider is happy with their leadership.

"I've been really proud of our seniors," Schneider said. "They're not necessarily the focal point of our team, but they definitely have made sure things are rolling in the right direction. They're a big part in what we do. I think our community does know that we have good leadership, but we have good leadership and we have kids that are very coachable, and I couldn't be more proud of how our parents in the community have raised our young men and how they're buying into our culture."

"We opened the season with a really good Sedgwick team that I think has 16 seniors, and then a really good Moundridge team who's coming up from 8-man, but has a really good senior and junior class. They were definitely challenging opening games to start the season, but I was very proud of how our kids just kept getting better every day."Schneider knew it was going to take a little bit of time for his team to get up to speed at the varsity level. The Black Bears picked up its first win of the year in Week 3 over Inman, 21-20, handing the Teutons its first loss."We put it together in a game against Inman where there was a lot of adversity," Schneider said. "We had a late start with some thunderstorm stuff, so we spent an hour and a half in a hot gym. They had their homecoming week, so we were kind of fighting that stuff, and then we had a kid get stretchered off in the third quarter with some muscle spasms in his neck that they were pretty concerned about about, so I was just proud of how our team responded there."The Black Bears added another win in Week 4, downing then-undefeated Ellinwood, 41-35."We kind of got punched in the mouth a little bit by Ellinwood," Schneider said. "We responded very well, and told our kids that's kind of the benefit of having difficult games early in the season, because we've been challenged and I thought that was the biggest reason we were able to come back in the second half against Ellinwood."The Black Bears run the flexbone offense and are led by junior Zane Farney at tailback, the two-time all-state selection is off to another strong campaign. As a sophomore Farney rushed for 1,500 yards, and so far this year is up to 577 yards for a 144-yard average per game. Junior Wyatt Newberry has 277 yards rushing for three touchdowns and a nine-yard average per attempt. Sterling as a team has rushed for nearly 300 yards per game to go along with 10 touchdowns.&nbsp;Junior Boston Ekart has caught all five passes thrown by junior Logan Isaac for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Isaac has also been a threat on the ground with 135 yards.One of the big reasons for the Black Bear success has been the offensive line, a brand new unit at the varsity level this year."Everybody on our offensive line is new to varsity football," Schneider said. "That unit is led by Waylon Schmidt, he's a senior, and he has done a really nice job with his leadership on that front."The Sterling defense has made some changes early in the season."We have kind of been trying to find our identity on defense," Schneider said. "We changed some things around in Week 2, and really have been figuring things out. We played well against Inman, and then we turned around and Ellinwood did some things we weren't prepared for. Kevin Ploutz and Teyton Savage have been anchoring us up front. We're really young at the linebacker position, but we've got some really good athletes there."Schneider says to knock off Medicine Lodge (3-1) on the road this week all comes down to execution."We've got to execute," Schneider said. "Medicine Lodge had a really good game plan for our run game last year, and we did some nice things against it, but it's just kind of those things you have to stick with it. Sometimes it's tough to watch from the stands because it's a little bit slow going, but you just stick with it and then the run game starts popping. We need to possess the ball and keep it out of their quarterbacks hands, he's a great kid and an all-state athlete, probably one of the better quarterbacks in all of 3-2-1A."The Black Bears are hoping for a different outcome than last year, a game in which Sterling lost at home to Medicine Lodge, 21-20. The Black Bears went for the 2-point conversion and the win, but failed and suffered the loss."It was a dogfight and a lot of good stuff," Schneider said. "I do know they're going to fast and physical."Schneider is happy with where the program is in his sixth year as the Black Bears head coach."When we really struggling and our numbers were really low, one thing as a coaching staff and administration we talked about is that we wanted to really make the culture something we should be proud of," Schneider said. "I really do think that we're there. I hear compliments about how are kids act and behave in the community. I just had a compliment the other day about how a group of our kids were at the local cafe, and how they interacted with the community members and how they cleaned up after themselves. It's really great to hear things like that and see how our kids act in the hallways and I couldn't be more proud. We always say that we want to raise young men of character, and you can't guarantee the wins and the losses, but I got into coaching because I had great role models growing up and I kind of want to return the favor on that.&nbsp;The Black Bears only have three seniors, but Schneider is happy with their leadership."I've been really proud of our seniors," Schneider said. "They're not necessarily the focal point of our team, but they definitely have made sure things are rolling in the right direction. They're a big part in what we do. I think our community does know that we have good leadership, but we have good leadership and we have kids that are very coachable, and I couldn't be more proud of how our parents in the community have raised our young men and how they're buying into our culture."

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of East 17th and North Plum.

In the mid-1970s, Floyd Dick and Robert Owens formed the Patlyn Oil Co. and started acquiring gas stations.

In 1978, they purchased the old Herman Oil Co. gas station at 434 E. 17th.

In 1984, Robert Owens solely owned the company and had bigger ideas. The first photo shows the Robert Owens Gas Station in 1987 right before demolition.

Owens idea was to get into the convenience store/gas station/car wash business. The second photo shows his "full stop" dream under construction.

Owens then leased the completed property to the Wen's One convenience store group, owned by the Wenger Oil Co. out of Newton. The third photo shows the property during the Wen's One occupation.

In 1998, Owens converted the lease over to the T &amp; E Oil Co., owned by the Shorty Brown Family. They converted the property into the "Pantry Plus" convenience store moniker. The fourth photo shows the property then, under that name.

In 2003, the Pantry Plus group sold out to the Kwik Shop group, who just happened to own a facility just diagonal in the intersection. That's when the 434 E. 17th property was rebranded to the Kwik Shop. The fifth photo shows the property today, still the Kwik Shop, with the property still owned by the Patricia and Carl Owen Trust of Oklahoma City.

📷 Throwback Thursday: APCO - Vol. 90

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jim Gruver with the Downtown Hutch Rod Run is looking forward to the 17th annual event Friday and Saturday. Registration on Friday begins at noon.

"Everybody comes in a little different this year," Gruver said.&nbsp; "We are not pre reserving any parking spots so a couple of options. People can come in go where they want to park walk back to the registration and register or they can just get in line at registration."

More than half of the cars are there both days, though Saturday is the larger day and had almost 300 cars last year.

"The big thing on Friday is 6:00 p.m. is our annual cruise," Gruver said. "Everybody takes out leaves the event and a lot of them just drag up and down Main. A lot of them just go different places in town. It's kind of open to whatever they want to do. We have a little cruise route up and down Main, that back in the day used to be Sandy's a restaurant down there on North Main and that's kind of the turnaround spot and coming back, but the other thing that goes along with that this year is we are doing a poker run which will go to five different locations.&nbsp; Anybody that comes to the and signs up at the rod run that day can be registered and join the the poker run also, and there's a $500 cash prize for that poker run."

The parking spots do not hold from one day to the next, so registration at 8 a.m. Saturday will be important for those that want the best spot on the busiest day, and there will be plenty of trophies given away Saturday, as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We've kind of slimmed it down a little bit now from what we used to," Gruver said. "I think we are at 26 different classes right now and each one of those classes then is divided up into different years, so number of trophies is I think 50 some different trophies."

Rod Run this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss notes that the manufacturing sector is showing some weakness in this part of the country.

"We've lost manufacturing jobs for 2024," Goss said. "The U.S. economy has lost more than between 33 and 40,000 manufacturing jobs just in 2024. So manufacturing, we may not call it a recession, but it sure feels like a recession for certain portions of the manufacturing sector."

The Sunflower State is seeing its own struggles, specifically.

"In Kansas, you're talking about aircraft manufacturing and parts manufacturing, which is a big, big important industry for the state of Kansas," Goss said. "That's undergoing some significant changes. I look no further than Boeing aircraft to see what's going on there and the connections to the Kansas economy. That's certainly being felt by a lot across the region, but particularly in Kansas."

The supply managers and bankers that Goss surveys regularly are pretty negative about the coming months.

"There's a lot of pessimism out there in this part of the country," Goss said. "I think it's also in other parts of the nation, but particularly here because of the dependence on agriculture, the dependence on manufacturing, and now we've got this strike going on. Now, we'll have to wait and see."

Goss said the labor actions across the country, from Boeing in the northwest to the dockworkers in the Gulf and Atlantic, will have a drag on the economy in the fourth quarter.
