HUTCHINSON, Kan. — FAMFEST is coming up this Saturday evening at the Hutchinson YMCA from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It's a night of family fun where costumes will be the star of the show.

"We'll be closing an hour early that day to get everything prepared," said David Foster with the YMCA. "The Y will close at 4 p.m. this Saturday instead of 5 p.m., but we're looking forward to a great event. We are combining this with our Saturday Night at the Y. That would be free and open to any middle schooler, 6th, 7th and 8th grader in Hutch and Reno County, plus YMCA families."&nbsp; 

FAMFEST is held monthly at rotating branch locations.

"In addition to having the pool available for swimming, we're going to have Zorb ball, if you have seen people get in those big like hamster wheels and race each other, we'll have one of those. Human foosball, soccer darts, which is really fun, arts and crafts, we'll have a selfie station, all kinds of fun stuff in addition to some of the things we offer at the Y. I think we'll be doing some water volleyball in the family pool. Just a great event for our members and their families and those kids and their families that would normally come to Saturday Night at the Y."

There is another group they hope will come on Saturday.

"We have sent out some, what we call golden tickets to any non-members that are program participants at the Y," Foster said. "It is open to those families, as well. If they received a golden ticket, they just bring that to the Y and they can come and be a part of FAMFEST as well."

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of 1st Avenue and Poplar.

John B. Brown and L.A. Bigger came to Hutchinson in 1872, and set up shop as Santa Fe Railway agents and real estate agents.

Hutch was only six months old. John Brown also built a very large and exquisite home for his family at 127 E. 1st. This quite possibly could be the oldest home still standing in town. Both gentlemen were city councilmen in the early years, with Brown being mayor for 1874 and 1875. The first photo shows the John Brown home in the winter, about 1900.

The second photo shows the Brown and Bigger land office at 2 S. Main in 1882.

In 1909, Robert and Jenny Steele purchased the house and started taking in boarders.

In 1926, architect W.E. Hulse added on a large brick addition, addressed as 17 N. Poplar, that housed 20 apartments. The third photo shows the apartment addition that became known as the Pactola Apartments for many years.

The fourth photo shows the home at 127 E. 1st today, now owned by Rafael Trenado Lopez.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday sent a recommendation back to the Reno County Planning Commission to consider a ban on commercial solar in the Ninnescah watershed that feeds into Cheney Lake and to otherwise direct them to go ahead and write commercial regulations for the parts of the zoned part of the county to which the watershed ban will not apply.&nbsp;

The commission did not choose to ban commercial solar altogether in the county on Wednesday. However, when they get a look at the regulations as they come back from the planning commission again, all of the options for the commission are still on the table, including a ban in the zoned area altogether, depending on how those regulations may be written.

This was after over an hour of discussion, much of it procedural in nature. The bottom line is that the county commission did not feel they have the expertise to adequately determine the threat to the watershed well enough to allow development there. They had multiple perspectives on the best policy solution to get to that end goal, but this is where they have left it for the time being.

County commission sends solar regs back to planning

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — City Engineer Evan Patterson gave an update to the Hutchinson City Council at their meeting on Tuesday on progress in finding out what kind of lines are underground in Hutch.

"The EPA's lead and copper rule required public water systems to inventory all of the water lines, the water service lines in their systems," Patterson said. "That water line inventory for us is due to KDHE by October 16th this year, so we're working on the final quality control checks of it right now. We plan to actually submit I think on the 14th just in case there are some issues uploading the files, but we have completed the data collection for the initial submittal and our city workers actually began collecting data in 2021 on the water lines and we collected information on 10,000 out of the 17,000 water service lines in the city's network."

The advance work has allowed the city to be ahead of many of its peers in the process.

"That was sufficient to actually allow this third party consultant that was contracted by the state to produce an analysis of the remaining ones, the remaining 7,000," Patterson said. "They predict with a 95% confidence level that we don't have any more than 10 lines that we'll need to replace out of those 7,000 service lines. That confidence level is enough for KDHE to let us reclassify those unknown lines as non-lead, which is a pretty big deal for us. While we still will be doing our due diligence and investigating all those unknowns, it means we're no longer under the same clock for identifying all those lines. We still have a little bit of work left for some of the lines that we've identified as galvanized because galvanized steel and iron lines can pick up lead if there's a lead pipe upstream. We need to be able to verify that those galvanized lines didn't have lead upstream, so we're going through some of that process right now. I don't think we'll complete all that before we turn in our first inventory, but we will be working on it in the months after that."

The need appears to be a lot less than was initially feared.

"We did a pre-application back in May and at the time we thought we'd have about 290 just from a really crude estimate. But again, like I said, now we're looking at just about an estimate of 10, which is significantly less cost to the city. We're still recommending that we go for the full $5.6 million dollar loan amount because for better or worse, we're only going to be able to actually apply against that amount whenever we find water lines we need to replace anyway."

If it does turn out that it is only 10 lines that need replacing, they will likely only use about $100,000 of the loan amount. The council approved the application at their meeting on Tuesday.

Water line inventory ready to submit

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved the bid for the Atrium Hotel demolition at its special meeting on Tuesday. The low bid was for $865,000 from Kansas Concrete LLC of Nickerson.

The bid includes asbestos removal, demolition and hauling away all contents, signage and demolition material. Also, the contractor will remove all concrete, footings and foundations within the structural limits, cut and cap all utilities and backfill the area to grade with fill dirt.

Asbestos abatement is scheduled to start within 45 days of bid acceptance, with demolition to be completed within 120 days of the completion of the asbestos abatement.

The what-ifs regarding what happens after the demolition were the bulk of the questions from the council on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The city will put a lien on the property for the demolition cost. The bottom line is, if the current owner sells the property for more than the amount of the lien and his mortgage, the city will get paid back.  </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved the bid for the Atrium Hotel demolition at its special meeting on Tuesday. The low bid was for $865,000 from Kansas Concrete LLC of Nickerson.The bid includes asbestos removal, demolition and hauling away all contents, signage and demolition material. Also, the contractor will remove all concrete, footings and foundations within the structural limits, cut and cap all utilities and backfill the area to grade with fill dirt.Asbestos abatement is scheduled to start within 45 days of bid acceptance, with demolition to be completed within 120 days of the completion of the asbestos abatement.The what-ifs regarding what happens after the demolition were the bulk of the questions from the council on Tuesday.&nbsp;The city will put a lien on the property for the demolition cost. The bottom line is, if the current owner sells the property for more than the amount of the lien and his mortgage, the city will get paid back. Atrium demolition bid approved

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Superintendent Curtis Nightingale said they just about have everything to finish out the bond projects in the district.

"We're anticipating all the furnishings are being delivered Thursday of this week," Nightingale said. "With that, that should pretty much close everything out. We have the two daycares, we just did some reconstruction on on those buildings to get that stuff ready to go."

Voters approved a&nbsp;$7.6 million bond in the spring of 2023.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School boys soccer team is off to an 8-1-1 start to the 2024 season, already securing more wins than the Salthawks had the entire 2023 season.

The Salthawks won seven games last year, finishing 7-8-2.

"I wouldn't say it's to be expected, but last year our team was young and we returned a lot of starters from last year," head coach Tyler Lawrence said. "We've got a really good player pool with a lot of talent this year."

The Salthawks will host Maize South (9-1-0) this evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. The Mavericks are the current No. 1 seed in the 5A west regional.

"They're the reigning state champs and right now they're leading the west region in class 5A," Lawrence said.&nbsp;

Lawrence says the Salthawks have the home field advantage with the natural surface.

"We're one of the few grass locations in the state," Lawrence said. "To be honest, I think the guys are mentally prepared and ready to go."

Lawrence, who played at Hutch High was thrilled when he was hired in 2022 to coach the program that he once had played for.

"It's fantastic," Lawrence said. "I have great memories of Hutch High soccer, it was really the highlight of high school for me. I played under a really good coach while I was here, so I'm just trying to return the favor to these guys. I've coached a lot of the guys in the junior and senior class for some of them seven or eight years, so I'm just trying to give them the best experience possible."

The Salthawks have played a challenging schedule thus far, and it is only going to get even more tricky over the next week. Hutchinson will host Maize South tonight, travel to Derby on Thursday and then host Maize next Tuesday.

"Last week was tough simply because we had three games during the week," Lawrence said. "That was a lot physically and mentally on the players. This week and next week are tough just simply because of the competition that we have. We're going to have to be on it for the rest of the year, we've got tough games the next three weeks."

The only blemish on the Salthawks' schedule was a loss to Dodge City on Sept. 4. The Red Demons remain undefeated and atop the class 6A rankings.

"I think the game against Dodge was kind of a wake up call for us," Lawrence said. "Last year, we struggled with confidence in big games and I think that kind of reared up in the Dodge match. I'm glad that happened early in the season, because we've had a few matches since then where the game is close and you can tell the guys are growing and learning from those experiences."

The Salthawks are currently in third place in the 5A west regional standings behind Maize South and Salina South.

"It's nice to see the guys riding high on confidence and enjoying their success," Lawrence said. "I will say, especially when we're talking about regional seeding in 5A west, there is not really a soft spot."

Hutchinson has outscored its opponents 22-18 so far this season, including six games decided by one goal or fewer.

"Offensively we have a lot of good attacking players this year," Lawrence said. "One of our key players up front is Griffin Galyon, he's only a sophomore, but he's extremely talented and naturally gifted, but he also works really hard and has a great attitude. We also have some great upperclassmen in our attack. We have Landon Nusser who's a senior this year, he's a big physical presence, he's a great finisher and scored our first two goals of the season and really set a tone for us as a team. Probably another player in our attack is Hayden Waymire, he's put a lot of work in individually and grown a lot as a player."

The Salthawk defense is the tone setter that makes the team goes.

"We have some depth in our midfield, in the starting positions, Jack Yoder and Cole Bleything provide great leadership and they coordinate well together," Lawrence said. "They're just a great engine for our team and can cover the whole field."

"We also have a really strong senior class," Lawrence said. "We have Lucas Witt, Alex Johnson and Daniel Prichard, they're all great leaders for the team and have big game experience. We also have Jason Prichard, Jair Maciel and Alex Mendez. They're juniors and are getting a great experience this year and really contributing to the team, as well."

Lawrence says he is grateful for the community support his team has received to this point.

"Our parents and fans have been great this year," Lawrence said. "We always have a really good showing at the games and myself and our players really appreciate their support."

⚽ Hutch High enjoying success on the pitch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas State University men's basketball coach Jerome Tang is the latest to speak at the Sports Arena as part of the Ray and Stella Dillon Lecture Series.

Tang is well-known for his interaction with the K-State student body in Manhattan.

"We build great relationships, not just with our players, but with the community," Tang said. "I just love the students, I've always had a passion for the students everywhere I've been. One of the things that attracted me to K-State, as an assistant, when we would play in Bramlage the students would tear up the newspaper and toss it in the air, I just thought that was the coolest thing. I'm so thankful they do it and I get to be on that side now."

Tang took over the K-State program in 2022 after 19 years as an assistant at Baylor University.&nbsp;

"The truth is that I didn't have other opportunities," Tang said. "I did explore other places and they all said no. Gene Taylor was the person dumb enough to say yes, or smart enough to say yes. I know as frustrating as it was for me, knowing that I could do the job given the opportunity, I firmly believe God blocked those doors, cause there were things I still needed to learn, there were experiences that I still needed to have, and in his perfect timing, he opened the right spot for me."

Tang is also well-known for his passion that he has for his players.

"I have this really good friend named Tim Maloney. Coach Maloney and I coached at Baylor together," Tang said. "He would always say 'Jerome, you teach basketball, but you coach people,' it's a teaching portion of things, I had this really great bible quiz coach growing up named Norma Schuler and she was just one of the most positive people that I've ever been around. It didn't matter how bad things were, Sister Schuler would have just the right words to say to make you feel better. I saw what she did for each of us individually and I thought man I'd love to have that kind of an impact. As a high school coach, I taught Bible and history at Heritage Christian Academy, so there is always a teaching portion to it, but I think you teach the material, but you're always coaching people."

Tang says Wichita State head men's basketball coach Paul Mills is a good friend of his and had a great quote.

"He said, 'hey Jerome, you know one of the definitions for coach it's a vehicle that takes people from one place to where they want to go, from where they're at to where they want to go,' I think that's a great illustration of what coaching is. We're taking them from where they're at to where they want to go. The course to get there, we have to help them understand and plan, cause everyone wants to do it in a straight line, and that's not always the case."

There are two simple solutions to how Tang always keeps an upbeat energy and passion around his team.

"We win, or we learn," Tang said. "There's always something when it happens, you can learn something from it. Our thing in recruiting is when one of my staff members calls and says 'hey this kid committed to another school,' I say God's got somebody better for us. God's faithfulness in my life allows me to know that if something doesn't go the way I want it to go, it's because he has something better in mind."

Tang is gearing up for his third season in the Little Apple, which the Wildcats will open their season on Oct. 29 with an exhibition game against Fort Hays State.

"I like our guys, we have talented kids, but they're kids," Tang said. "We're probably spending more time coaching maturity, teaching them how to be professionals, not pros, but professionals. How do they wake up every day, what do they do, every decision they make during the day, because every decision matters. If it was just basketball, they're talented, we're going to be pretty good."

When recruiting, Tang looks for student-athletes that smile.

"After you get past the talent, I like guys who smile," Tang said. "I've never seen a guy who frowned have a high motor. I dislike walking into a room, where you know somebody is going to have a frown on their face. They're going to suck the energy out the building, so if I talk to a guy for five minutes and I don't make him laugh, or he don't make me laugh, I move on. I like seeing them smile with their teammates, it says a lot about them."

Tang says the family aspect is important in his everyday life in Manhattan.

"We say if the only time you spend time together is on the basketball court at the office then you're really not a family," Tang said. "Every week we have family dinners, one week it's catered, one week it's potluck, so our wives cook, we don't do the wives cooking every week, cause as husbands we want them to not be mad at us. The guys come over to the house, and one of the things I say is we don't want them to only know where the bathrooms are, we want them to know where the knives and forks are, so they feel at home. There's nothing like having the guys over to the house, they're sitting in the living room, watching TV, eating and then one of them falls asleep, you know that they feel comfortable enough to fall asleep on your couch."

Tang speaks on family and passion at Dillon Lecture Series

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Treasurer&nbsp;Richele Calvert will be at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday to ask for more help.&nbsp;

"The tag office they they do a great job the employees that we do have," said Reno County Administrator Randy Partington. "Residents if you go at the beginning of the month, end of the month, Mondays or Fridays you're probably going to wait a couple hours. The county treasurer has requested an additional person position to add to the tag line up front to hope hopefully ease some of that strain that's put on the taxpayers when they come in to pay their tags and taxes."

"That position is funded by the motor vehicle fund which is part of the fees when you go in and pay your tags you'll pay, I think it's a dollar fifty right now," Partington said. "All that money is then collected in a separate fund it's not property tax it's not tax levy fund so all those tag clerks are paid out of that fund."

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

"Residents if you go at the beginning of the month, end of the month, Mondays or Fridays you're probably going to wait a couple hours. The county treasurer has requested an additional person position to add to the tag line up front to hope hopefully ease some of that strain that's put on the taxpayers when they come in to pay their tags and taxes."The tag office has the money to do this."That position is funded by the motor vehicle fund which is part of the fees when you go in and pay your tags you'll pay, I think it's a dollar fifty right now," Partington said. "All that money is then collected in a separate fund it's not property tax it's not tax levy fund so all those tag clerks are paid out of that fund."The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Mental Health Task Force and Fight the Stigma are coming together for a Community Photo Event Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson.

"Fight the Stigma is all about educating and advocating for mental health and mental health awareness," said Jaime Garcia with Fight the Stigma. "A lot of people don't even know what the word stigma means and that's a negative set of beliefs about, it could really be about anything, but a negative set of beliefs about mental health and so our role as always and has been is educating and advocating."

The Thursday event is about getting connected and knowing that if you struggle with mental health issues, you are not alone.

"This is going to be a rather short event but very impactful I feel," Garcia said. "We are going to have a guest speaker and he's going to tell his story, his own personal story with mental health and his journey through his life with it. We are going to have several mental health resources. Horizons will be there, Tyler Vance from Horizons will be there to talk about their services.

Emily Parker from Milestone Clubhouse will also talk about what they do, but the highlight of the night is going to be the group photo.&nbsp;

"Everyone who attends they'll get a free raffle ticket as they enter the gate and those will be raffled off at some point," Garcia said. "The highlight of the evening will be a big aerial photograph that we are having taken to really show all of us together we are trying to pack that stadium so bring everybody bring your co-workers and your whole families because we want to pack that stadium and make a really cool and unique aerial photograph and put Reno County on the map for World Mental Health Day."

Attendees are encouraged to wear lime green or black for the photo.

Event for World Mental Health Day in Hutch Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards told Hutch Post that the State Board of Education has narrowed its focus for school districts in the next round of accreditation.

"The state board in its latest revisions to accreditation is focusing, I think, more clearly on three measurable state outlines as sort of the basics the state wants to see you deal with," Tallman said. "That's state test scores as a measure of academic readiness, graduation requirements, how many students graduate on time, and then finally, how many students earn or enrolled in some sort of post-secondary education within two years. Those have been a part of the system for a long time, but the new accreditation system really drives those three measurable things into focus as what the board is going to look at as far as outcomes, even though other things are important."

One of the ways that districts can practically move on this is by strengthening its multi-tiered system of supports.

"It really means you are regularly monitoring how well your students are doing throughout the school year, not just on like the basis of a single test or something like that, and you have ways or what you might call interventions, personalized way of saying, if we're seeing that this child, for example, is having trouble, let's just go to a simple one. They're having trouble with fractions, and they're not doing as well as others in the class. You make time to get that student some extra help to solve that."

Also a key point is decreasing absenteeism, so that the interventions done in school have time to work.

"In a lot of cases it's not kind of deliberately flouting policy," Tallman said. "It's just not being sure why it's important. The second thing is, related to that, is really working hard at trying to have strong, positive relationships with your students and parents so that you can communicate that message and then, quite frankly, so students want to be in school. In other words, a lot of it comes down to if learning is seen as relevant, if it's engaging, if you feel cared about, if the environment seems safe, you will want to be in that kind of environment."

Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center

RENO COUNTY —&nbsp; Family and friends traveled from across Kansas, Georgia, and Alabama to witness the graduation of the 331st Basic Training Class at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday, October 4. 

KLETC Police Instructor Senior James Buettgenbach, the class coordinator, introduced the graduates. This was followed by a commencement speech from Christopher Kennedy, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. He shared personal insights and lessons that have helped him succeed in his career, stating “Contemplate your life, recognize and appreciate the individuals who took the time and made the effort to get you where you are today. As you move forward, be prepared to support those around you—you never know when you will need their support again in life. My path has thrown me some humdingers at times, and the only reason I’ve made it this far is the amazing assistance I’ve received from my support team.”

Class President Officer Jacob Earley of the Hutchinson Police Department also addressed the graduates. He spoke about the class's future, the connections they made, and how they bonded. He remarked, “This class is different in a lot of ways. We all have different personalities and different ways of thinking. We’re the group that likes to argue about the color of the sky, but we’re also the group that puts all of our differences aside when it comes to needing and supporting one another.”

Under the authority of Vice Provost and Director of Police Training Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s Law enforcement licensing authority.

KDOT announces September bids

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, in a partnership with Hutch Rec, the Cosmosphere, Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson, Hutchinson YMCA, and Hutchinson USD 308, are hosting a Mother &amp; Son Date Night event on Saturday, Nov. 2.

"The idea actually came through conversations with Benjamin Anderson with Hutch Regional," said Hutch Rec's Tony Finlay. "We decided that one of the gaps in the community was events specifically for mother and sons. And so as we started that, we realized that it would be great to bring in other community partners, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club.&nbsp; We've been in close contact with USD 308 as well."

This event takes place Nov. 2 starting at 6 p.m. at the Cosmosphere and includes a catered meal, rose for each mom, hand-written card for each son, and a program featuring former NASA spacesuit technician Sharon McDougle.

"It's a fundraiser for the Cosmosphere," said David Foster with the YMCA.&nbsp;We're going to be able to raise some money for them and help some of those kids that are coming to the event, maybe experience camp at the Cosmosphere this summer. I think it's kind of neat when other organizations can come together on behalf of the community at large to support mothers and sons, like Tony said, but also give some of these kids an opportunity to maybe get to do some things that they've never done before, which I think is really cool."&nbsp; 

Tickets are $100 per mother-son couple and can be purchased online at&nbsp;<a href="http://hutchrec.com/">hutchrec.com</a>&nbsp;or in-person at Hutch Rec Downtown (17 E. 1st Ave.), from 9 a.m.&nbsp;to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"It's going to be a pretty formal event, but we also want it to be fun and educational at the same time and having the former astronaut come and speak," Foster said. "We're also going to staff the event for the most part with hosts and waiters with some male role models from around the community. I know Hutch Community College Athletic Department is going to help out along with some other local community leaders. So if there are any males out there listening that would like to serve as a role model that night and work with this event, they can just let us know and we'll be glad to get them plugged in."
