🏈 Defense shines as No. 1 HutchCC shuts out No. 14 Dodge City

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team posted its second consecutive shutout, as the Blue Dragons cruised to a 42-0 win over No. 14 Dodge City on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragons are now 5-0 on the season, 1-0 in Jayhawk Conference play. The Blue Dragons have now won 27 straight regular season games, with the last loss coming on Oct. 7, 2021 to Independence.

Hutchinson scored all 42 points in the first half, including 21 points in each of the two quarters.

HutchCC gained 399 yards of total offense on 76 plays, while the Conquistadors were held to only 35 yards on 52 plays. The Blue Dragon defense held the Conquistador ground game to negative-12 yards on 37 attempts. The stout Hutchinson defense forced four Dodge City turnovers.

Samari Collier found Tre Brown for a 23-yard touchdown pass to put Hutch on the board with 12:03 to play in the first quarter, capitalizing on a four-play 47-yard drive. Collier then plunged into the end zone from a yard out to put the Blue Dragons in front, 14-0, with 8:12 left in the first. Collier threw one more passing touchdown in the first, a 20-yard pass to Waymond Jordan Jr. with 2:47 to play in the period.

Brown caught a 35-yard pass to add onto the Blue Dragon lead with 11:14 to play in the half, followed by a two-yard rushing score from Julius Bolden with 9:50 to play. The final touchdown in the ballgame came with six seconds left in the second quarter, as La'Modrick Spencer forced a fumble and recovered the ball in the end zone.

The back-to-back shutouts by the Blue Dragons are the first since the 2021 season, in which Hutchinson shutout Highland (77-0) and Independence (42-0).

This marks the first time since Aug. 27, 2022 that Dodge City has been shutout, and the first time since Nov. 5, 2022 that the Conqs failed to score a touchdown.

Hutchinson is now 58-35 all-time in Jayhawk Conference openers, and 11-9 against Dodge City in KJCCC openers. The Blue Dragons are 54-36-4 all-time against Dodge City, including winning the last eight matchups.
