Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) is expanding its agricultural education offerings with the launch of a new John Deere Technician Program, created through a partnership with PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision Equipment.&nbsp;

The program, the second&nbsp;in Kansas, will allow students to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree while receiving specialized training to become certified John Deere service technicians.&nbsp;

“This has been a project in the works for several years,” said Sheldon Stewart, department co-chair of the Agriculture, Business, Computers &amp; Technology Department at HutchCC. “When students complete the two-year program, they’ll graduate with both a degree and John Deere certification, ready to step into the workforce.”&nbsp;

The program is designed to go beyond the college’s existing one-year diesel program. During the first year, students will complete HutchCC’s traditional curriculum. In the second year, they will transition to John Deere-specific training, working directly on equipment and technology at PrairieLand Partners’ dealership near the U.S. 50/K-61 junction. The dealership is expanding its facilities to accommodate the program.&nbsp;

Students will gain hands-on experience alongside certified technicians both in the shop and in the field. Each student must be sponsored by a John Deere dealership, which commits to hiring the student for at least two years after graduation.&nbsp;

“This is truly a hands-on, career-driven program,” Stewart said. “Students come out with little to no debt, a high-demand certification, and a good-paying career that can last a lifetime.”&nbsp;

Industry leaders say the program addresses a critical workforce shortage. PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision, which operate dealerships across Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, are seeking to expand their technician workforce by as much as 25 percent.&nbsp;

Stewart noted that the program also helps strengthen ties between HutchCC and the agricultural community. “Farmers rely on this technology to keep producing, and our students will be trained to keep that equipment running,” he said. “Agriculture isn’t going away, and this program ensures our graduates are prepared for the future—whether that’s with autonomous tractors, electric-powered combines, or other emerging technology.”&nbsp;

John Deere Technician program begins at HutchCC 

The Hutchinson YMCA introduced its new Aquatics Director, Cord Harrington, marking another step forward for the organization as its new facility continues to take shape.&nbsp;

Harrington, who joined the Y a little over a month ago, brings years of aquatics experience, including serving as head swim coach at Sterling College. A lifelong swimmer, Harrington said the role feels like a natural fit. 

“I grew up around the YMCA and it’s exciting to come back and give back to the community,” Harrington said. “With the new facility and new equipment on the way, we’ll have even more opportunities to create memories and expand aquatics programs.”&nbsp;

Harrington will oversee a variety of offerings, including year-round swim lessons for preschool and school-aged children, the Swim Academy designed to prepare youth for competitive swimming, and the YMCA Swim Club, which provides ongoing training and competition opportunities.&nbsp;

Hutchinson YMCA Branch Manager David Foster highlighted the return of the YMCA’s free Splash program, a water safety initiative for second graders across Hutchinson and Reno County. The program will resume September 8, with an estimated 300 to 400 students expected to participate throughout the school year.&nbsp; 

“We’re excited to once again provide this life-saving education,” Foster said. “By the end of the school year, every eligible student in the county will have gone through the program.”&nbsp;

As construction continues on the YMCA’s new building, leaders say the expanded aquatics programs, combined with the expertise of Harrington, will ensure the Y remains a hub for community recreation, safety, and lifelong learning.&nbsp;

YMCA introduces Harrington as new Aquatics Manager

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce has named Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Conditioning as its August Small Business of the Month.

Owner Ron Sturgeon launched the company after Stevens, Inc., where he had worked for 16 years, closed shortly after the birth of his youngest daughter. With a young family to support, Sturgeon drew on his HVAC background and quickly expanded into plumbing, building the business through mentorship and customer referrals.

What began as a one-man operation has grown into a company employing nine people, with as many as 20 at one time. Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Conditioning has been part of many major Hutchinson projects, including the Cosmosphere, Hutchinson Community College, City Hall, the Sports Arena, Tyson, local schools and churches.

The company prides itself on experience, with more than 100 years of combined expertise among its staff. Sturgeon said that knowledge often allows the team to save customers money by repairing older systems rather than recommending full replacement. Employee retention is another point of pride, with each staff member having at least five years of service, and one with more than 25 years.

As Hutchinson’s only union plumbing and HVAC provider, the business offers benefits, retirement plans and a workplace culture Sturgeon describes as both professional and fun. Beyond its operations, the company supports local schools, SkillsUSA, Hutchinson Community College and disaster relief, while employees volunteer in areas such as fire safety education and student mentorship.

Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Conditioning named Small Business of the Month

Harold L. Tegethoff was born February 26, 1936, in Morrowville, KS, to George M. and Ursula (Scheetz) Tegethoff. &nbsp;He died August 18, 2025, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. &nbsp;

Harold was raised on the farm, and attended Fairbury Junior College, Fairbury, NE, while working at a windmill factory. &nbsp;He attended Kansas State University, changed his major to education, and completed his Bachelor of Education at Emporia State University. &nbsp; Harold’s junior high mathematics teaching career began at Hutchinson USD 308 Central Junior High, in 1960. &nbsp;He continued teaching until his retirement in 1994 from Hutchinson High School and part-time at Hutchinson Community College. &nbsp;While teaching, Harold commuted to Emporia, where he completed his Master of Education degree.

In 1975, Harold married Linda Johnson Nerad, in Wichita. &nbsp;Together, they raised Linda’s two daughters, Denise and Michelle. &nbsp;One of his joys was helping to raise Michelle’s five-year-old son, Robert Lounsbury III, during the six months she was deployed to Italy and Sarajevo while serving in the United States Air Force. Harold and Robert enjoyed their daily visit to Fraese Drug Soda Fountain, where Harold continued to meet with his coffee buddies. &nbsp;The coffee buddies were solving the world’s problems, but more than that, they were a valuable support group to each other.

Harold was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. &nbsp;His deep Catholic faith led him to begin a Perpetual Adoration prayer hour on Sunday nights, in 1989. &nbsp;Harold treasured his quiet time with the Lord. &nbsp;He was a member of the Thursday morning Cursillo men’s prayer group and frequently attended daily mass as well as Saturday Mass.

Harold will be remembered for his thoughtful kindness. &nbsp;After his retirement, he was the homemaker in charge of vacuuming and all household chores, while Linda continued working another 17 years. Harold always appreciated Linda’s home cooking and even insisted on doing the dishes as an expression of his gratitude.

Harold is survived by: &nbsp;his wife of almost 50 years, Linda; stepdaughters, Denise Avery (Robert Scott Avery) and Michelle Hurst; grandchildren, Christopher P. E. Avery (Marie Moses), Catherine R. Avery (Jacob Gonedridge), and Robert L. Lounsbury III; great-grandsons, Christopher J.P. Avery and Emitt Avery; great-granddaughter, Alice Lounsbury; brother, Robert Tegethoff; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wilma Brandt.

Jack Joseph Gagnebin, 82, of Abbyville, died August 18, 2025, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. He was born November 29, 1942, in Hutchinson, to Joseph J. and Vesta M. (Bridgeman) Gagnebin.

Jack grew up in Abbyville, Kansas, and graduated from Fairfield North High School in 1961. He attended Hutchinson Community College for one year before joining the United States Air Force. After being honorably discharged, Jack returned to Abbyville and took over his father’s business, Gagnebin Gas and Oil, delivering fuel to local farmers. He later became a truck driver, hauling cattle for Branson Truck Line in Lyons for a number of years. Jack also enjoyed his time as a USD 310 school bus driver for over 20 years. He loved duck hunting and enjoyed snow skiing and lake activities, mainly driving the boat pulling family and friends. But Jack was most happy with his family around him and attending his grandchildren's activities - his grandchildren were the light of his life. He was a member of Plevna Community Bible Church.

On November 28, 1964, Jack married Sharon L. Dennis, at the Plevna Community Bible Church.

He is survived by: his beloved wife of over 60 years, Sharon Gagnebin of the home; sons, Michael Gagnebin and wife Emily of Wichita, Darin Gagnebin and wife Nancy of Paola; grandsons, Noah and Levi Gagnebin of Wichita, granddaughters, Mckenzie Gagnebin of St. Louis, Missouri, Bailey Gagnebin of Paola; and many extended family members.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Marilyn Gagnebin, Alice Nadine Gagnebin, and Joan Loudenback.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Plevna Community Bible Church, with Pastor David E. Green officiating. Private family inurnment will take place later.

Jack Gagnebin |1942-2025|

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The defending national champion Hutchinson Community College football team will open the 2025 season with more preseason recognition than any program in the country.

JCGridiron released its preseason All-America teams, and the Blue Dragons led the way with 23 total selections, including 10 on the prestigious first team, six more than any other school.

Running back Titus Petteway, wide receiver Derrick Salley Jr., center Mason Thrush, guard Dylan Johnson, and defensive tackle Jeffrey Manns II highlighted Hutchinson’s first-team honorees. They were joined by defensive end Demarcus Johnson, defensive end J’Lynn Allen, linebacker Tyler Lassiter, and defensive backs David Jester and Da’Mun Allen.

The Blue Dragons added four second-team picks, quarterback Christian Johnson, defensive tackle TaVeon Robinson, defensive end Darius Wiley, and cornerback Rayshawn Reynolds. Three more were honored on the third team, including offensive tackle Dylan Nolan-Cook, defensive tackle K.J. Henson, and cornerback Nireek Sharpe.

🏈 HutchCC dominates JCGridiron preseason All-America teams with 23 selections

Brian Martin, a former Hutchinson Community College basketball player who went on to play at Kansas and in the NBA, died Friday. He was 62.

Martin, a 6-foot-9 forward from Fort Smith, Arkansas, played one season for the Blue Dragons in 1980-81 under coach Gary Bargen. He helped lead HutchCC to a 24-8 record, including a 6-4 mark in the Jayhawk Conference to finish second. The Blue Dragons were dominant at home with a 13-3 record, went 3-5 on the road and were perfect in neutral-site contests at 8-0. That season ended with Hutchinson capturing the program’s 11th Region VI championship before falling in the NJCAA Bi-District game.

From HutchCC, Martin transferred to Kansas, where he played three seasons from 1981-84 under coaches Ted Owens and Larry Brown. He averaged 3.6 points and 3.2 rebounds as a sophomore, improving to 5.1 points and 5.1 rebounds as a senior captain during Brown’s first year. The Jayhawks won the Big Eight tournament that season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Martin was selected in the ninth round of the 1984 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers and split the 1985-86 season with Portland and Seattle. He later played six years in the Continental Basketball Association, winning a title with Tampa Bay in 1985, and also competed professionally in Belgium, Germany, Spain and Italy.

After retiring from basketball, Martin returned to Wichita in 2002 and built a career in insurance and banking while remaining active in civic and faith organizations.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Ridgepoint Church in Wichita.

The Blue Dragons were voted the unanimous No. 1 team in the NJCAA Division I preseason poll released Monday, receiving all 12 first-place votes. Hutchinson finished the 2024 season 11-1 and captured the program’s second national championship with a 28-23 victory over Iowa Western in Canyon, Texas.

Last fall, the Blue Dragons climbed to No. 1 by the third week of the season and remained in the top three for the remainder of the year. They dominated No. 2 Georgia Military 63-21 in the semifinals before outlasting Iowa Western in the title game.

The poll marks the seventh consecutive season Hutchinson has opened with a national ranking. Under head coach Drew Dallas, the Blue Dragons have been ranked in 62 of the 68 polls released during his tenure, holding the No. 1 position 36 times. Hutchinson has now appeared in 49 straight national polls dating back to 2021.

The preseason Top 5 features Hutchinson, Iowa Western, Northwest Mississippi, Navarro and Georgia Military. Garden City, another member of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, checked in at No. 7, while Butler was ranked No. 13.&nbsp; Coffeyville and Dodge City each received votes.

Hutchinson, which also won the 2021 national championship under Dallas, will try to add a third title to its resume this fall.

🏈 HutchCC enters 2025 season as unanimous No. 1 in NJCAA preseason poll

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Marcus &amp; Millichap, a leading commercial real estate brokerage firm, announced Monday the $3.4 million sale of a retail strip center and Dillon’s Fuel Station ground lease in Hutchinson.

The 50,420-square-foot property at 401 E. 4th Ave. is anchored by national tenants including Planet Fitness, Dollar Tree and Dillon’s Fuel Station. It sold for $3,415,000.

Mark Ruble, Chris Lind and Zack House, investment specialists with Marcus &amp; Millichap’s Phoenix office, along with Colby Haugness, the firm’s broker of record in Kansas, had the exclusive listing and marketed the property on behalf of the seller, a Kansas limited liability company.

Built in 1968, the property sits on 3.98 acres adjacent to downtown Hutchinson. It is located one mile south of Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College, serving a population of more than 46,000 residents within a five-mile radius.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas is making history today, honoring the voices, vision, and impact of women in sports media with the first-ever observance of Women in Sports Broadcasting Day.&nbsp;

The day was proclaimed by Gov. Laura Kelly at the urging of KSN-TV sports anchor and reporter Asia Cymone Smith, whose advocacy turned a personal mission into a statewide recognition. For Smith, the proclamation is more than a ceremonial gesture, it’s a statement of value in an industry where women still make up just 38% of sports broadcasting roles in Kansas, according to a review of recent staff directories from stations in Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City.&nbsp;

“It’s something that felt surreal, something that I’d been thinking about for a long time,” Smith said. “I wanted to make sure that women, us hard-working women who are also putting in work here, are recognized. This is a testament to the recognition and the work we’ve put in. And it highlights contributions of the former women in sports broadcasting and the ones to come.”&nbsp;

Smith, who also serves as Miss Kansas USA, has made women in sports broadcasting a central part of her public platform. She operates a mentorship initiative called Girls Talk Game, aimed at uplifting young girls who aspire to careers in the field through school visits, group sessions and one-on-one coaching. “I want to be the help that I always wish I had when I first got started,” she said. “I want to be that person that teaches them the ropes so they don’t have to struggle and so they have the same opportunities to learn and get the knowledge they need to succeed.”&nbsp;

That desire was shaped by her own experiences. Early in her career, she was once told, “We’re not here to hold your hand or teach you the ropes.” 

It was a moment that stayed with her, and one she vowed not to repeat with the next generation. 

“For every little girl who really is watching the TV news and sees us, I want them to know that it’s possible, no matter what other people tell you, when they tell you, you don’t belong in the industry,” Smith said. “Those are comments we get all the time. And I want them to know those people can’t define your success.”&nbsp;

The proclamation also honors the women who have inspired others on the national stage. It names Kansas-connected journalists such as Becky Dixon, the first woman to co-host ABC’s Wide World of Sports; Aminia Smith, a former sports journalist in Lawrence now hosting ESPN’s SportsCenter; and Kendra Douglas, a former Wichita sports anchor now working as an NBA sideline reporter. Smith said seeing them succeed at such high levels serves as proof of what’s possible. “They’re inspirations to us who are sitting here today,” she said.&nbsp;

Joining Smith in celebrating the day are KAKE-TV sports director Micaela Dea and KWCH-TV multimedia journalist Rachel Hallam. Though they work at competing stations, the three regularly cross paths on the sidelines, at press conferences and in locker rooms, and have forged a bond over shared experiences. 

“We see each other all the time,” Dea said. “I knew from the onset of joining this career I wanted to be one of those women that helped other women. If I could have my small part in making that easier for the next woman, that’s amazing. And of course, I want to pay tribute to all the other women before us that have literally trailblazed the way.”&nbsp;

Dea, who became KAKE’s first female sports director last year, said she is encouraged by how far the industry has come. “I can’t imagine where it will be in the next twenty years or the next couple of decades,” she said. “But I definitely am proud to be one of those women in sports that loves to empower other women.”&nbsp;

Hallam said the observance is a meaningful acknowledgment of both the progress made and the challenges that remain. “It means everything,” Hallam said. “It’s hard to be in this industry in the first place, and then how hard it is to be a woman in this industry. Just for everybody to finally recognize that, not just ourselves and not just the other women that are in this industry, but to know that it is still a growing industry and we still have opportunities laid out in front of us.”&nbsp;

Smith said she hopes today’s recognition sparks more opportunities for women in leadership roles, production and high-profile analyst positions in men’s sports. “There’s a lot of leadership positions I think can still be filled,” she said. “Women have completely trailblazed and transformed the sideline reporter role. But why not have those same broadcasters be analysts for the NBA and for the NFL? Our perspective is important and should be shown, too.” She pointed to growing momentum in women’s sports coverage, from WNBA expansion to record-breaking college softball and volleyball crowds, as proof that the appetite is there for more women’s voices. “I think it’s continuing to grow, and that’s great to see,” she said.&nbsp;

While Women in Sports Broadcasting Day is new, those celebrating it hope it becomes an annual touchpoint for progress. “I hope every girl watching sees this and thinks, ‘That can be me,’” Smith said. “Because it absolutely can.”&nbsp;

The proclamation urges Kansans to join in recognizing the achievements of women in sports media and to support ongoing efforts toward equality in the profession. For Smith, Dea and Hallam, that means continuing to show up for each other, and for the young women they hope will follow in their footsteps.&nbsp;

“We’re supposed to be competitors,” Hallam said, “but we’re constantly having each other’s backs. That’s what makes this day so important, it’s a reminder that we’re here, we can do our job, and we’re not going anywhere.”&nbsp;

Kansas marks first Women in Sports Broadcasting Day

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall is on the road this month as part of his 100-stop tour across Kansas, meeting with residents, farmers, and business leaders to discuss key issues facing the state.

Marshall said one of the highlights of the tour so far has been visiting with agricultural producers, including a stop at the Reno County Farm Bureau. He noted that while many grain farmers are struggling with low commodity prices and high interest rates, there are bright spots in the beef and dairy industries.

“We finished up last night in Reno County with a big, optimistic crowd,” Marshall said. “Farmers are under pressure with rising loan costs and poor wheat and corn prices, but there’s hope with new trade deals and support programs like updated Title I reference prices.”

A key theme of Marshall’s stops is mental health, particularly in rural areas. He cited alarming statistics, including that more farmers today die by suicide than from farm accidents.

“Mental illness and addiction are in the same bucket of issues,” Marshall said. “We’re seeing an epidemic of mental health challenges in youth, in mothers after childbirth, and in farming families. Community health centers, like Prairie View, are doing a great job responding to people in crisis.”

Marshall also highlighted Kansas’ manufacturing strength, pointing to demand for American-made products and challenges finding enough workers to meet it. He said provisions in what he calls the “big, beautiful bill” – such as removing taxes on overtime pay – are helping ease the strain.

The senator spent part of Friday visiting Hutchinson Community College, where he touted new flexibility in federal Pell Grants that allow short-term training programs to qualify for assistance.

“Not everyone wants a four-year degree,” Marshall said. “Kansas community and technical colleges are training welders, electricians, and health care workers who can start jobs earning $60,000 to $80,000 a year with little to no debt.”

Marshall said the tour will continue through Labor Day weekend before he returns to Washington, where Congress faces a September 30 deadline to fund the federal government.

Marshall highlights mental health, trade, and workforce training

Jess Roy Heim, 85, of Hutchinson, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born May 30, 1940, to Clara Mae (Featherhoff) and William Walter Heim Sr. at Grace Hospital, Hutchinson.

At age 4, the family moved to rural area and began farming using horses. Jess attended Willow Grove Grade School, graduated from Buhler High School in 1959, and Hutchinson Community College. He worked various jobs with friend Jake Base during the summer. At age 15, they were working construction. His father was disabled in 1950 and he had to help financially. In high school, Jess played football as a guard and linebacker and was also involved in FFA.&nbsp;

After graduation, he worked at Western Foods, Laramie Mills, and in 1961, he began working at Cessna. In 1962, Jess was drafted into the Army and served 2 years - 13 months in Korea and the remaining time in Fort Lee, Virginia. Jess was very proud to have served his country. He wore his Army Veteran hat quite often. Jess returned to Hutchinson and Cessna Hydraulics and retired in 2002 from Eaton Hydraulics (Cessna) after 41 years. He developed a love for golf that continued for many years. Being a people person, Jess became bored with retirement and worked delivering flowers for Dillon Stores for 13 years. He enjoyed his co-workers as family and meeting the customers. Jess attended The Father’s House church in Hutchinson.

Jess married the love of his life, Sheryl Barkman, in 1966. They shared over 59 years of marriage and have a son, Bret. He was very involved in coaching Bret and his teammates in baseball, football, basketball, and soccer for 7 years, enjoying every moment of it. Jess took pride in having a beautiful lawn as well as a productive garden. He also enjoyed decorating for Christmas - his Christmas lights lit the neighborhood. Jess enjoyed watching westerns, Kansas City Royals, and Kansas City Chiefs with a Pepsi-Cola and a bowl of popcorn with extra butter.

Jess was blessed with 4 granddaughters: Elizabeth “Ellie”, Allison, Mallory, and Sophia. He never missed an important event involving them. Jess was very proud of each one for their many&nbsp;achievements and always had a picture of them to share when conversing with others. They were&nbsp;the bright spot in his life.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; granddaughter, Elizabeth; sister, Alberta Bishop; brothers, Edward, Walter (Zella), and William “Bill” (Doris).

Jess is survived by: his wife, Sheryl; son, Bret (Angelea); granddaughters, Allison, Mallory, Sophia; brother-in-law, Rick Barkman (Irene); Chad Henson (Christina) and numerous other nephews and nieces.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Marilyn M. Post, 74, died August 11, 2025, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. She was born on February 1, 1951, in Great Bend, to Aloysius Francis “Louie” and Elizabeth Agnes “Betty” (Ackermann) Gerritzen.

Marilyn graduated from Claflin High School in 1969 and attended Barton County Community College. She worked at Electrex, Hutchinson, assisting in wire harnessing, and later she worked at Stutzman’s and Home Depot in the greenhouse. Marilyn enjoyed life; she loved to spend time in Carey Park watching the water fountains with her dog, Sandy. Marilyn liked to read and take care of her plants and flowers.

Marilyn is survived by: her sister, Janet Weseloh of Sylvan Grove; companion of over 15 years, Steve Behrendt of Hutchinson; former husband, Jerry Post of Hutchinson; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and beloved dog, Sandy.

With a new head coach, a battle-tested senior class, and a hunger to rewrite expectations, the Nickerson Panthers are entering the 2025 football season with energy and purpose.

“We are very excited about this upcoming season,” said first-year head coach Parker Bruce, who also serves as the team’s defensive coordinator. “Our boys are rebranding what it means to be a Nickerson Panther, and our staff is extremely proud of them for that.”

Bruce inherits a veteran group, including nine returning offensive starters and multiple three-year varsity players, led by senior quarterback Kristopher Monroe. A multi-sport athlete and state-qualifying wrestler, Monroe enters his third year as the Panthers’ starter and is stepping into a major leadership role.

“Kristopher is a key factor to our season,” Bruce said. “He’s looking towards a much larger leadership role than he’s used to, but he has done a great job so far.”

The Panthers will feature a physical, simplified offensive scheme designed to play fast and adapt to tough Kansas weather. Monroe will be supported by Rylan Morrell, a powerful junior running back; Austin Peterson, a 6-foot-3 senior receiver with elite speed; and a veteran offensive line led by Zein Rector, Atton Nelson, and Gabe Taylor.

“Our offense is a hard-nose scheme that fits Kansas football,” Bruce said. “Our boys have bought into the ideology.”

Senior tight end/linebacker Riley Brawner returns as a cornerstone on both sides of the ball. A three-year starter and three-sport athlete, Brawner is being recruited at the collegiate level and anchors the defense from his middle linebacker position.

“He is a legit collegiate prospect at 6'2”, 210-215,” Bruce said.

On defense, Bruce said the team is focused on fast, disciplined play. With multiple players entering their third or fourth year in the system, the Panthers are confident in their execution. Depth up front will be critical, especially with several linemen playing both ways.

“We still need to find some depth up front to give our big boys a break,” Bruce said.

Several new faces are expected to contribute, including Dalton Wakefield-Baker, a returning senior who has impressed at running back, fullback, and linebacker after taking a year off. Tyler Morrell, Riley Spurlock, and underclassmen like Connor Bower, Kagyn Rice, Connor White, and Elijah Trass could all play valuable roles this fall.

But for Bruce, the most exciting part of year one is the team’s chemistry.

“The bond between the players from top down has been impressive,” he said. “Our older guys are taking the younger ones in, and showing them what ‘team’ means.”

The Panthers are eager to shed their old image and establish a new standard under Bruce and his staff, which includes offensive coordinator Michael Hill, quarterbacks coach Kyle Vedder, and others. Nickerson has went 1-8 each of the last four seasons, going 4-40 over the last five years. “Come Week 1, we will not look like the stereotypical Nickerson Panther team,” Bruce said. “It gives our players a chance to showcase multiple different skill sets that can help better their opportunities for college.”

🏈 High school football preview: Nickerson Panthers

StartUp Hutch is rolling out a new mentorship program designed to connect aspiring and current small business owners with experienced local advisors.

Executive Director Graham Clemme said the program, launching this week, pairs entrepreneurs with mentors who have specific expertise in their field. It is intended to complement the free business coaching already offered by StartUp Hutch.

“We want to have experts in the community be there for an hour or two a month — an additional friend and supporter who’s been through it and can help you avoid common mistakes,” Clemme said.

The initial group of mentors includes David Hogan of Newton, specializing in operations; Sarah Diamond of rural Hutchinson, experienced in nonprofits and grant writing; and longtime Hutchinson resident Gene Pflughoft, who has a broad background in high-level business operations. More mentors will be added in the coming months.

Prospective mentees can request a match through the Startup Hutch website. Clemme said the team will discuss each applicant’s needs and connect them with a suitable mentor.

Clemme also stressed the importance of starting with a solid business plan and financial projections before launching a venture. “Think about month-to-month projections over the next three years. That’s not only best practice, but essential if you’re applying for loans or investment,” he said.

Startup Hutch recently partnered with Groover Labs in Wichita through the Kansas Department of Commerce’s Excel Kansas program, which provides technology-based businesses with grants starting at $5,000 and up to $25,000 to develop prototypes and validate market demand. One grant will be awarded in Reno County, with applications expected to open in September.

Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge Returns&nbsp;

With the school year underway, Startup Hutch is also reviving its Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, part of the statewide Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge. Students will create business plans, develop pitch presentations, and participate in a trade-show-style event scheduled for the spring semester.

Clemme said the goal is to involve all high schools in Reno County in a countywide competition, likely hosted at Hutchinson Community College in March.

</h2>Startup Hutch recently partnered with Groover Labs in Wichita through the Kansas Department of Commerce’s Excel Kansas program, which provides technology-based businesses with grants starting at $5,000 and up to $25,000 to develop prototypes and validate market demand. One grant will be awarded in Reno County, with applications expected to open in September.<h2>Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge Returns&nbsp;</h2>With the school year underway, Startup Hutch is also reviving its Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, part of the statewide Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge. StartUp Hutch launches new mentorship program 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center will host a three-day Foundation Oil Painting Workshop on Sept. 26-28, offering beginners the chance to learn essential skills from Wichita artist and teacher Yulla Vega.

The workshop will run from 1 to 4 p.m. each day. Tuition is $85 for non-members and $75 for Art Center members.

Participants will learn to safely work with solvents, paints and supplies while practicing core techniques in color mixing, brushwork and layering. The class will feature step-by-step instruction, live tutorials and individualized guidance to help attendees create their own paintings and develop a solid foundation in oil painting.

Vega is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of home and place, often inspired by personal experiences with transitional homelessness, selective mutism and systemic disruption. Their art, which spans painting and installation, aims to honor survival and the reassembly of self.

With more than two decades of artistic practice, Vega combines studio work with public engagement and holds a project management certification to expand art’s role as a tool for community dialogue and healing. They have studied fine arts at Cowley College and the Kansas City Art Institute and are a member of Artist Inc. Vega currently works as an artist, project manager and teacher at Mark Arts in Wichita.

Hutchinson Art Center to host beginner oil painting workshop Sept. 26-28

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School senior Kale Dreiling placed fifth in the nation in the Job Interview category at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in June in Atlanta.

Dreiling earned his spot at nationals by winning first place in April at the Kansas SkillsUSA competition. The Job Interview contest included about 50 qualifiers, with Dreiling advancing to the top 12 finalists before placing fifth overall.

“They only medal the top three,” said Glenna Burden, who has coached the leadership competitions at Hutchinson High for the past two years. “He had an exceptional overall score … but we just barely missed it.”

Jeremiah Harmon, SkillsUSA lead advisor and Dreiling’s welding instructor, said he encouraged Dreiling to compete. “This really is a big deal when you consider our role in CTE is to become college and career ready,” Harmon said. “Placing 5th in the country for preparing students in Job Interview; which includes job searching, writing resumes, asking and securing letters of recommendation, cover letters, filling out applications, meeting with receptionists, conducting an interview, and even the handshake. The student is scored in every aspect of the event and I am very proud to brag on both Kale and Glenna; Kale earned 898.75 of 1000 points.”

Burden explained that the contest is judged from the moment competitors begin the process. “Everything is graded from the eye contact, the handshake, how he sits before he’s taken back to the interview panel,” she said. “He’s got a gift of gab … it’s what he can do in that room that put him ahead.”

Burden called the competition “absolute life skills,” adding, “Not everyone is going to college like they used to. I think that we need to reinvigorate our pursuit of the trades, and this is just one more way to get visibility to our pursuit.”

Also attending nationals from Hutchinson High were Eli Perez, Enrique Flores and Felisa O’Neal.

Hutch High’s Dreiling places 5th in nation at SkillsUSA job interview contest

One day after earning a preseason national ranking, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team were picked to finish second in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons earned their highest preseason league pick since being tapped as the preseason favorite in 2015. Last season the Dragons were picked to finish third.

On Monday, the Blue Dragons were ranked No. 15 in the NJCAA Division I preseason rankings.

The 2025 Blue Dragons have six players returning from an 11-2-7 team in 2024 that placed third in the KJCCC with an 8-2-6 record. The Blue Dragons defeated Dodge City 1-0 in overtime in the opening round and upended Butler 2-1 in the semifinals to earn their first Region 6 Tournament championship berth since 2014. The Blue Dragons lost to Cowley in the championship game in penalty kicks in the title game.

Sammy Lane, the only head coach in Blue Dragon women's soccer history, begins his 21st season when the No. 15-ranked Blue Dragons open the season with No. 12 Trinity Valley at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 25 at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

Lane is 270-74-19 in his first 20 seasons at Hutchinson.

Defending KJCCC and Region 6 champion Cowley is the preseason poll in the league's coaches' poll. Hutchinson is second, followed by Butler, Barton and Dodge City in spots 3, 4 and 5. Garden City, Coffeyville and Seward County round out the preseason poll.

The Blue Dragons will have three preseason scrimmages before opening the season with Trinity Valley. The Dragons go to Pittsburg State on Friday and will play host to Neosho County at 1 p.m. on Sunday and FC Wichita at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 21.

⚽ Blue Dragons picked 2nd in KJCCC preseason poll

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College will host its Blue Dragon FanFest on Thursday, Aug. 14, at Gowans Stadium.

The event, which begins at 7 p.m., will feature Blue Dragon football, volleyball, soccer and spirit squad student-athletes. Fans will have the opportunity to meet players and coaches, get autographs, take photos and pick up schedule posters.

There will also be free snow cones available to attendees.

The event helps sustain operations at the Hospice House, one of the few remaining standalone facilities of its kind in Kansas. Administrator Darla Wilson said the funds raised stay entirely within the community, often going toward technology upgrades, facility improvements, and other needs to support patients at the end of life.&nbsp;
