Chester Lamont “Mont” McGillivray, 89, died March 14, 2024, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. &nbsp;He was born May 12, 1934, in Ulysses, Kansas, to Gerald Guy and Esther Alma (Withrow) McGillivray. &nbsp;

Mont graduated from Ulysses High School in 1952, and attended Garden City Community College. &nbsp;Throughout his career, he worked as a sales representative for PMS Foods, Far-Mar-Co, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield. &nbsp;After retirement, Mont and his wife, Kathleen, moved to Bella Vista, AR, where they lived for 23 years before returning to Hutchinson in 2021. &nbsp;Mont was a member of the Ulysses Jaycees and the Knights of Columbus in Bella Vista, AR. &nbsp;He enjoyed golfing and traveling throughout the United States and other countries. &nbsp;Mont always put his family first, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church, Bella Vista, AR, and Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

&nbsp;On January 10, 1954, he married the love of his life, Kathleen Mae Komma, in Satanta, KS. &nbsp;They recently celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Mont is survived by: &nbsp;his wife, Kathleen McGillivray; children, Patricia Augustine (Barry), Guy McGillivray (Kathy), all of Hutchinson; Leslie Wilds of Yukon, OK, Crystal Hill (Brad) of Palmer Lake, CO and Emporia, and Kyle McGillivray (Heather) of Atlanta, GA and Cave Creek, AZ; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his parents; siblings, Sally McGillivray, Lynne Fox, Doug McGillivray, Don McGillivray, and Kayo McGillivray; son, Terry McGillivray; and grandson, Joshua McGillivray.

Parish Rosary will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2024, with Mass of Christian Burial to Follow at 10:30 a.m., both at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson. &nbsp;Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. &nbsp;Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. &nbsp;Cremation has taken place.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 16 Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team knocked off No. 11 Cowley College, 89-83 in the Region VI semifinal on Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons advance to the Region VI championship game for the 31st time in program history. Hutchinson will face No. 1 Barton on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson built a comfortable 42-27 halftime lead thanks to a hot shooting performance. The Blue Dragons knocked down 16-of-30 shots in the first half, including six 3-pointers.&nbsp;

Cowley struggled to produce in the half, going just 8-of-31 and 1-of-8 from the 3-point line. Despite the struggles from the floor, the Tigers did knock down 10-of-12 free throw shots.

The Tigers turned up the defense in the second half, leading to multiple points off turnovers. Cowley finished with 30 points off of 20 Blue Dragon turnovers.&nbsp;

The Tigers knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to start the second half and pull within 42-33.&nbsp;

Hutchinson responded by scoring the games next seven points to push the lead back to 49-33.

Cowley did not go away though, continuing to take advantage of Blue Dragon turnovers. The Tigers pulled within six with 1:56 to play after Hutchinson led by as many as 19.

The Tigers then pulled within three, 86-83 with 19 seconds remaining following a 3-pointer from Jeff Nwankwo.

J.P. Ricks was then fouled and knocked down 1-of-2 from the foul stripe to put Hutch up four. After a missed Cowley shot, Kam Thomas was fouled and delivered both free throws to put the Blue Dragons in front 89-83 with 2.1 seconds to play and put the game on ice.

Thomas finished with a team-high 23 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Kobe Smith scored 17 big points off the bench, 12 of which came in the second half. Kernan Bundy added 14 off the bench, while JP Ricks (12 points) and Russell Branch (10 points) each scored in double figures, as well.

Nwankwo led the Cowley offense with a game-high 27 points, while Corey Thomas had 17.

The Blue Dragons knocked down 30-of-40 free throw attempts compared to 23-of-34 for the Tigers.&nbsp;

With the win, the Blue Dragons should have secured at least an at-large bid in the upcoming NJCAA Tournament.

Nathalee Smith, 90, passed away on March 15, 2024, at Hester Center at Wesley Towers in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born October 23, 1933 in Fort Worth, Texas. &nbsp;She was the oldest child of Harmon Bryan Poff and Annice Perry Poff.&nbsp;

Nathalee attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri for one year and then transferred to the University of Oklahoma where she graduated in 1954. &nbsp;&nbsp;

On August 15, 1954, she married Dennis O. Smith in Fort Worth, Texas. She and Dennis moved to Lawton, Oklahoma and later to Dachau, Germany where Dennis was stationed with the United States Army. Upon their return to the United States, Dennis enrolled at the University of Kansas and graduated in 1959 with a law degree. They moved to Kansas City for two years before moving to Hutchinson to live, practice law and raise their family.

During their years in Hutchinson, Nathalee was active as a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout leader. &nbsp;She also participated in the 4-H Horse Club program, Reno County Quarter Horse Association, Hutchinson Public Library, Hutchinson Symphony Guild, Blood Mobile and Hutchinson Hospital. &nbsp;

She was a member of the Psi chapter of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority as well as Chapter BL of P.E.O. &nbsp; She attended Grace Episcopal Church where she was a Junior Choir director, Sunday school teacher and a member of the Altar Guild.&nbsp;

She loved to read all different types of books. &nbsp;She missed this terribly when she developed Macular Degeneration later in life. &nbsp;She traveled extensively. &nbsp;She took each of her four grandsons on a special adventure during the summer before their senior year in high school. &nbsp;She had many, many friends and family members. &nbsp;She enjoyed celebrating their lives by sending them birthday and anniversary cards. &nbsp;She had a great appreciation for music, attending musical performances whenever she could. &nbsp;At the end of her life, music was always playing in her room which seemed to comfort her.&nbsp;

Nathalee was preceded in death by her husband in 2002, both of her parents, her sisters Loretta and Nina, and her son Gregory.&nbsp;

Survivors are: daughters Kimberly (Peter) Fanelli and Kathleen (Eric) Andres; sons Geoffrey and Scott (Katie); grandchildren Friedrick Schweitzer, Hans Schweitzer, Kyle (Lena) Kendall, Travis Kendall; and step-grandchildren Joe Fanelli, Scott Andres, Robyn (Brian) Bell, and Chloe Mitchell.&nbsp;

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday March 20, 2024, at Grace Episcopal Church, 2 Hyde Park Dr, Hutchinson with Reverend Dr. Ted Blakley officiating. &nbsp;Family will greet friends following the service. &nbsp;Friends may sign her book at Elliott Mortuary from 9 am – 5 pm. &nbsp;Burial will be a private family service at Memorial Park.

The Blue Dragons are now 32-0 overall, and will play in the Region VI championship game for the 11th time in program history on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

HutchCC will face the winner of the 5:30 p.m. semifinal on Friday between Dodge City and Butler.

Hutchinson trailed Barton (22-10) after the first quarter, 15-10, before picking up the defensive intensity. 

The Blue Dragons held Barton to 3-of-10 (30 percent) from the floor in the second quarter, while Hutchinson outscored the Cougars 20-7 to build a 30-22 lead at halftime.

Hutchinson built an 18-point lead at the 2:25 mark in the quarter, their largest lead of the contest. The Blue Dragons led 44-31 heading into the final quarter.

Neither team cracked double-figure scoring in the final frame, as the Cougars outscored Hutchinson, 8-5. The Cougars pulled within 44-33 early in the fourth quarter, but would not get any closer than that until the final 30 seconds.

Hutchinson was led by Bree Horyna with 11 points, all coming in the first half. Journey Armstead scored 10 while dishing off five assists, and Hailey Jackson finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

Barton was led by a double-double performance from Vera Ojenuwa with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Vivian Onugha had nine points and 12 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons are now 11-10 all-time in Region VI semifinal games following the win.&nbsp;

Following Tuesday night's thrilling come-from-behind overtime buzzer-beating victory over Garden City in the quarterfinals, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team is set to make its 46th appearance in the Region VI Tournament semifinals on Friday.

The No. 16-ranked and third-seeded Blue Dragons (26-5) will take on the No. 11-ranked and second-seeded Cowley Tigers (27-4) at 7:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Hutchinson-Cowley winner will play the Barton-Butler winner in the Region VI Tournament men's championship game at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons play in the Region VI Tournament semifinals for the second time in head coach Tommy DeSalme's three seasons on the Hutchinson bench. Two seasons ago, the Blue Dragons defeated Butler 92-85 in the semifinals at the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina.

Hutchinson is 30-15 all-time in the semifinal round of the Region VI Tournament and are 144-52 in 73 regional tournament appearances.

Friday's matchup with Cowley will be the 21st Region VI Tournament meeting with the Tigers. The Blue Dragons lead that series 21-19, but Cowley has won the last two postseason matchups, including a 116-107 loss to the Tigers in the 2021 championship game. The 21 games regional tournament games against Cowley ties 21 regional games against Independence for the most Region VI Tournament games against a single opponent in program history.

The Blue Dragons advanced to the 2024 semifinals when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>&nbsp;hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer in overtime to defeat Garden City 88-87 at the Sports Arena. Thomas banked in a 3-pointer with 6.1 seconds remaining regulation to force overtime. Thomas had 20 points, while&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/simon_valentino_8svq">Valentino Simon</a>&nbsp;had 11 points and 13 rebounds and J.P. Ricks added 12 points and nine assists in the victory over the Broncbusters.

Friday's game will be the third-straight nationally ranked matchup between the Blue Dragons and Tigers this season.

Cowley game into the Sports Arena on December 9 and stung the Blue Dragons 83-70. Corey Thomas has 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Tigers. Thomas had 14 points, but Hutchinson shot a season-low 32.9 percent in the loss.

The Dragons returned the favor on February 14 winning 88-86 at Scott Auditorium in Arkansas City. Trailing by 14 points with 9:42 to play in the second half,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kobe_csmn">Kobe Smith</a>&nbsp;hit the game winner with 1.6 seconds to play to give the Dragons a series split with Cowley.

The Blue Dragons are 3-4 against NJCAA-ranked opponents this season.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons, Tigers to meet in semifinal top-20 tilt

The top-seeded Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team makes its 21st appearance in the Region VI Tournament semifinals on Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Jayhawk Conference champion and tournament top seeded Blue Dragons (31-0) will meet the fourth-seeded Barton Cougars (22-9) in the first Region VI semifinal at 1 p.m. The Hutchinson-Barton winner will play the Dodge City-Butler winner at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) beginning at 12:45 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The only stream is a pay-per-view stream provided by the KJCCC Sports Network beginning at 12:55 p.m.

The Blue Dragons last appeared in the Region VI Tournament semifinals two seasons ago. Hutchinson defeated Seward County 92-84 en route to defeating Barton in the championship game for the program's ninth Region VI championship in program history.

The Blue Dragons are 10-10 all-time in Region VI Tournament semifinal games and are 67-38 all-time in 47 regional tournament appearances. Friday's game will be the ninth all-time Region VI Tournament matchup. The Dragons are 3-5 against Barton in the first eight meetings.

The Dragons advanced to Friday's semifinals after hitting 12 3-pointers and posting a 32-point first quarter as Hutchinson eliminated Cloud County 90-56 on Tuesday at the Sports Arena. Haley Jackson led five Hutchinson players scoring in double figures with 16 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;had 15 points.

Barton, the defending Region VI Tournament champion, advanced to the semifinal round with a 67-43 victory over Coffeyville on Tuesday in Great Bend. The Cougars shot 50 percent for the game and had four players scoring in double figures. Vera Ojenuwa had 15 points and seven rebounds while Vivian Unugha had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Over their last six games, Barton has been on an incredible defensive run allowing only 46 points per game.

Hutchinson won both regular-season meetings against Barton this season. The Blue Dragons had a big fourth quarter in a 74-64 win on January 17 at the Sports Arena and held the Cougars to 29.8 percent shooting in a 57-39 win on March 2 in Great Bend.‎‎

🏀 WBB: No. 1 ranked Blue Dragons face Barton in Region VI Semis

Eugene Glenn “Gene” Haas, 93, of Hutchinson, died March 13, 2024, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born August 31, 1930, in Ellinwood, to Roy and Anna (Meier) Haas.

Gene graduated from Chase High School in 1949 and attended Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951-1954 and received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in Korea. Gene worked as a land surveyor for Hefling Engineering for many years and then as consulting engineer for Reno County Public Works for over 20 years. He also volunteered as the elevator operator at Reno County Courthouse for many years, as well as at the Fox Theater and on the Volunteer Center advisory council. Gene was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, member and past-president of Kansas Land Surveyor’s Association, past member of V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361, Loyal Order of Moose #982, and AMBUCS. He loved hunting, camping, fishing, and was an avid HCC basketball fan.

Gene married Betty June Keen on January 30, 1954, in Hernando, MS. They shared 62 years of marriage before her death on May 17, 2016.

He is survived by: his children, Elizabeth Haas of Hutchinson, Richard and Nancy Haas of Excelsior Springs, MO, Vivan and Thomas Shamblin of Wichita; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Shirley Cox and Donna Belote.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, with military honors conducted by United States Marine Corps honor guard.

Career Fair at Sports Arena next month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Longtime radio voice of the Blue Dragons Glen Grunwald was honored on Tuesday for his 26 years of calling Hutchinson Community College men's basketball and football games on EAGLE Media stations, Country 102.9 and KWBW.

Grunwald joined the Blue Dragon broadcast crew in the 1997-98 season.

Since then, Grunwald has called 1,556 games and 1,248 as the Voice of the Blue Dragons. He has called 688 Blue Dragon men's basketball wins and 189 football wins.

In addition to his time as the lead Blue Dragon play-by-play voice, Grunwald has called numerous games as part of the NJCAA DI Men's Basketball Tournament and the NJCAA DI Volleyball Tournament broadcast crews.

Grunwald took over as the Sports Director at EAGLE Media in Hutchinson in 2019, replacing former Voice of the Blue Dragons, Rusty Hilst.

He has received the Hod Humiston Award by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters in 2017, the Oscar Stauffer "Sportscaster of the Year" award in 2020 from the Kansas Interscholastic Activities Administrators Association and numerous other awards.

Most recently, Grunwald was honored as one-of-three state finalists by the National Sports Media Association for Kansas "Sportscaster of the Year" for 2023.

Grunwald called the 2017 National Championship game in which the Blue Dragon men's basketball team defeated Eastern Florida State, as well as the first-ever football national title in program history in 2021.

The Blue Dragon Athletic Department awarded Grunwald and his wife Christi each with a rocking chair at the Region VI Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday.&nbsp;

He will continue to call the Blue Dragon men's basketball games for as long as they keep playing, including the Region VI Tournament semifinal on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Cowley College in the Sports Arena.

Grunwald announced earlier this year that he will be stepping down as the Voice of the Blue Dragons to spend more time with his wife and family. Grunwald plans to continue serving as the voice of the Hutchinson High School Salthawks for years to come.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Longtime radio voice of the Blue Dragons Glen Grunwald was honored on Tuesday for his 26 years of calling Hutchinson Community College men's basketball and football games on EAGLE Media stations, Country 102.9 and KWBW.Grunwald joined the Blue Dragon broadcast crew in the 1997-98 season.Since then, Grunwald has called 1,556 games and 1,248 as the Voice of the Blue Dragons. 🎙 Grunwald honored by HutchCC for 26 years behind the mic

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -&nbsp;The 2024 Region 6 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will take place at the fabled Sports Arena in Hutchinson KS for the semifinals and the finals on March 15 and 16.

“With the NJCAA D1 National Tournaments moving back a week, it created a situation that opened up many venues that we couldn’t use in the past because they hosted KSHSAA state tournaments,” said Mike Saddler, KJCCC commissioner and NJCAA Region 6 director. “A couple years ago the Region voted to hold our tournament in Hutchinson in the years when our tournament wasn’t the same weekend as high school State.”

The Sports Arena was opened in 1951, and is home to the NJCAA Division 1 men’s basketball championship tournament. The Arena underwent a major renovation through 2016 and 2017, and now boasts three practice courts, fresh locker rooms, a weight room, and new offices, as well as mechanical and cosmetic improvements. This years’ men’s national tourney takes place March 24-30.

Saddler noted the uniqueness of the Sports Arena.

“The Sports Arena is one of the best junior college basketball venues in the country. It is as good of a championship-caliber venue as there is nationally, so for us to get to host our region championship there is wonderful,” said Saddler. “It also provides the men’s teams in our region the opportunity to have played multiple games where the national tournament will be in a couple of weeks, which is a huge advantage for whoever advances from Kansas.”

Second round (quarterfinal) games of the Region 6 tournament are on Tuesday, March 12, with winners advancing to Hutchinson for Friday semifinals.

Saddler and the rest of the staff of the Region 6 tournament are looking forward to being in Hutchinson come Friday.

“The city of Hutchinson is a great basketball community, so they are excited to have the Region 6 Tournament. They put on great tournaments all throughout the year, whether it’s the NJCAA Men’s D1 National Tournament, NJCAA D1 Volleyball Tournament, or the many KSHSAA State events they host,” said Saddler. “The Hutchinson community does a wonderful job supporting the events they host, and they put on a first- class experience every time.”

🏀 2024 Region 6 basketball tournaments at the Sports Arena March 15-16

PARSONS – Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/darnell_jaeleigh_5kwl">Jaeleigh Darnell</a>&nbsp;combined for three home runs and six RBIs while pitchers&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/blakesley_delaney_cwfy">Delaney Blakesley</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/tomlinson_morgan_sq65">Morgan Tomlinson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/lake_dakota_j57w">Dakota Lake</a>&nbsp;teamed up to control the Labette offense as the Hutchinson Community College softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals on Tuesday at the LCC Softball Field.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/sandoval_olivia_ydnf">Olivia Sandoval</a>&nbsp;had the go-ahead RBI and Darnell homered while Blakesley and Lake limited Labette to three hits in a 4-2 victory in Game 1 on Tuesday. Darnell hit two home runs and drove in five runs as Tomlinson and Lake combined for a three-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory.

The Blue Dragons improved to 18-6 overall. The Dragons, now in a three-way tie for first place in the Jayhawk Conference at 7-1, play the two teams they are tied with – Seward County on Saturday in Liberal and Butler on Monday in El Dorado.

GAME 1 RECAP – Hutchinson 4, Labette 2 Hutchinson led 2-0 in the second inning, but Labette scored single runs in the second and third to tie the game at 2-all. The Dragons immediately grabbed the lead right back in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and third with one out, Sandoval grounded out to second, which allowed&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/brawner_brie_9nkv">Brie Brawner</a>&nbsp;to score the go-ahead run for a 3-2 lead.

Darnell then homered to center to lead off the fourth inning as Hutchinson built a 4-2 lead.

From that point, Lake went into pitcher her fourth save of the season. She pitched the final three innings with one walk and four strikeouts with no runs or hits allowed.

Brawner led the Blue Dragons going 2 or 3 with two runs scored. Sandoval drove in two runs with a double and groundout. Darnell hit her fifth home run of the season.

The Blue Dragons had seven total hits in the opening game.

Blakesley (5-0) worked the first four innings to earn the pitching victory. She allowed three hits and two runs, only one earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.

GAME 2 RECAP – Hutchinson 6, Labette 0 Both Darnell and Sandoval each went 4 for 4 to led the Blue Dragons' nine-hit attack. Sandoval set the battle for Darnell's huge game.

Sandoval gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead when her third-inning RBI single scored&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/backhaus_bailey_6uk7">Bailey Backhaus</a>. After Sandoval led off the fifth with a single, Darnell homered to left-center field for a 3-0 lead. Then in the sixth, Sandoval tripled to lead off the inning and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/kealey_annie_xr9m">Annie Kealey</a>&nbsp;was walked ahead of Darnell's second homer of the game, a three-run shot to left center for a 6-0 lead.

With her sixth and seventh home runs of the season, Darnell was 4 for 4 with a single-game high five RBIs. Darnell also doubled in the second inning.

Sandoval had a triple in her 4 for 4 performance. She scored two runs.

Tomlinson and Lake then combined for a three-hit shutout. Tomlinson allowed two hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Lake earned her second save of the day and fifth of the season with 3 1-3 innings of scoreless relief. Lake struck out six and walked one with one hit allowed.

Lake entered the game in the bottom of the fourth after Labette had two runners on. Lake pitched out of the jam with a pop up in foul territory caught by catcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/mastin_alexis_jxjs">Alexis Mastin</a>.

🥎 Blue Dragons sweep Labette in midweek tilt

From an offensive standout, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team tied for the 11th-most runs scored in a single game on Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field. From the defensive/pitching perspective, the Cowley Tigers had one of the biggest days by an opponent in Blue Dragon history.

The Tigers outlasted the Blue Dragons 23-22 in the first of two meetings this season between Cowley and Hutchinson.

The Blue Dragons are now 16-5 overall. Hutchinson returns to Jayhawk Conference play on Thursday at Butler. Cowley is now 12-7.

The final numbers – Cowley 23 runs on 21 hits and Hutchinson 22 runs on 21 hits – rank among the biggest single-game numbers in program history:

+ The combined 45 runs ties for second most in team history, matching the 45 combined runs scored between Hutchinson and Cowley on April 12, 2022 at Hobart-Detter Field.

+ Hutchinson's 22 runs scored tied for the 11th-most scored in Blue Dragon single-game history.

+ Cowley's 23 runs are the third-most runs scored by a Blue Dragon opponent in Blue Dragon single-game history.

The Blue Dragons were on the cusp of completing the largest comeback in program history. Twice the Blue Dragons scored by 12 runs and trailed 23-14 at the seventh-inning stretch.

Trailing 16-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Dragons exploded for 10 runs in the inning to pull within 16-14. Hutchinson sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning and pulled within two on&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/cymbalista_colin_rw61">Colin Cymbalista</a>'s sacrifice fly that scored&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/tucker_jordan_v8wz">Jordan Tucker</a>.

Cowley immediately answered back with a seven-run seven inning to claim a 23-14 lead.

The Blue Dragons kept battling back, posting an eight-run seventh inning to pull within 23-22.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/gunderson_cody_npi8">Cody Gunderson</a>&nbsp;homers to right to lead off the inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/summers_jackson_drux">Jackson Summers</a>&nbsp;then added a two-run single to pull within six runs. Cymbalista followed with an RBI single,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/pimental-guerrero_luis_ubag">Luis Pimentel-Guerrero</a>&nbsp;drew a bases-loaded walk,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/davis_jon_e1bh">Jon Davis</a>&nbsp;scored on a wild pitch, Gunderson singled home Cymbalista and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/maher_quinn_h0lr">Quinn Maher</a>'s RBI single drove in Pimentel-Guerrero to complete the eight-run inning and pull the Dragons within 23-22.

Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth innings, but the Blue Dragons stranded the potential tying run at second base in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Gunderson paced the Blue Dragon offensive onslaught going 4 for 6 with two home runs – he hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-all. Gunderson had five RBIs and scored three runs.

Maher had his first career four-hit game going 4 for 4 with two runs, two RBIs and two walks.

Cymbalista was 3 for 5 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/bowie_mac_309y">Mac Bowie</a>, Tucker and Summers had two hits each. Bowie had a double and three runs scored. Tucker tripled and scored three runs. Summers had a season-high three RBIs.

Pimentel-Guerrero homered and drove in four runs.

The Blue Dragons six walks off eight different Cowley pitchers, which combined for 14 strikeouts. Seven Blue Dragon batters were hit with pitches. Six Cowley batters were plunked with pitches.

Hutchinson used nine different pitchers.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/mckay_gus_ihyq">Gus McKay</a>&nbsp;was tagged with the loss. Blue Dragon pitchers allowed seven combined walks and the Blue Dragons committed seven errors, which tied for the fifth most in single-game history, matching seven errors against Independence in a Region VI Tournament game on May 8, 2015.

⚾ Blue Dragons fall in high scoring affair with Cowley

ST. CHARLES, Missouri – The No. 5-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team opened the 2024 spring season on Monday and Tuesday with a third-place finish at the Lindenwood Invitational played at Missouri Bluffs Country Club.

The Blue Dragons finished with a 54-hole team score of 857 (+5). The Dragons were 18 strokes behind team champion Lindenwood and three strokes behind second-place and District III rival Indian Hills. The Blue Dragons shot rounds of 284 and 288 on Monday and closed the tournament with a 1-over 285 on Tuesday.

Hutchinson had two Top 10 individual finishers on Tuesday.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/razinskas_david_7wz3">David Razinskas</a>&nbsp;tied for 10th overall after shooting an even-par 213 over 54 holes. Razinskas scored better each round opening with Monday rounds of 73 and 72 before closing Tuesday with a team-low round of 3-under 68 on Tuesday.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/anderson_marco_qoi7">Marco Anderson</a>&nbsp;tied for 23rd place at 6-over 219. Anderson opened the tournament with a 72, but slipped in the Monday afternoon round to 75. He closed on Tuesday with a 72.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/ross_louis_dfpl">Louis Ross</a>&nbsp;tied for 34th at 9-over 222. Ross had rounds of 78, 72 and 72.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/thissen_kenton_qoy2">Keaton Thissen</a>&nbsp;tied for 38th at 10-over 233. Thissen carded rounds of 71, 79 and 73.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/sauder_brooks_jmni">Brooks Sauder</a>, playing as an individual player tied for 59th with a 54-hole total of 232. Sauder had Monday rounds of 77 and 72 before posting an 83 on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons will play at the Oakwood Intercollegiate next Monday and Tuesday in Enid, Oklahoma.

⛳ HutchCC golfers 3rd at Lindenwood University Invitational

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a study done for all the community colleges in the state, Hutchinson Community College provides value for the investment Reno County makes in tax dollars.

"We get local property tax revenue, of course, from the Reno County taxpayers," said HutchCC President Carter File. "A portion of our budget comes from the state of Kansas. That's based on student credit hours, but also what classes they are taking. Technical education classes are reimbursed at a higher rate. It's a complicated formula. It's not as complicated as the K-12 formula, but it's pretty complicated. Finally, we get student tuition and fees. Those are about 32% of our budget. The state is about 30%, the local property tax part is about 38%."

Last year, the college received about $15.6 million in property taxes.

"The total amount of economic impact that Hutchinson Community College has on an annual basis on the Reno County region is $391.5 million," File said.
