Eugene Glenn “Gene” Haas, 93, of Hutchinson, died March 13, 2024, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born August 31, 1930, in Ellinwood, to Roy and Anna (Meier) Haas.

Gene graduated from Chase High School in 1949 and attended Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951-1954 and received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in Korea. Gene worked as a land surveyor for Hefling Engineering for many years and then as consulting engineer for Reno County Public Works for over 20 years. He also volunteered as the elevator operator at Reno County Courthouse for many years, as well as at the Fox Theater and on the Volunteer Center advisory council. Gene was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, member and past-president of Kansas Land Surveyor’s Association, past member of V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361, Loyal Order of Moose #982, and AMBUCS. He loved hunting, camping, fishing, and was an avid HCC basketball fan.

Gene married Betty June Keen on January 30, 1954, in Hernando, MS. They shared 62 years of marriage before her death on May 17, 2016.

He is survived by: his children, Elizabeth Haas of Hutchinson, Richard and Nancy Haas of Excelsior Springs, MO, Vivan and Thomas Shamblin of Wichita; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Shirley Cox and Donna Belote.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, with military honors conducted by United States Marine Corps honor guard.

Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily until the service at Elliott Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association, American Kidney Fund, Hospice of Reno County, or New Covenant Presbyterian Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
