Bonnie Lea Byrum, 79, died March 28, 2024, at Thorne Care Center Wesley Towers, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;She was born December 8, 1944, in Denver, CO, to Henry Bechthold and Helen (Lewellen) Bechthold.

Bonnie was a 1962 graduate of Hutchinson High School. &nbsp;She also graduated from Salt City Business College, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;Bonnie was a member of the Oklahoma Rural Letter Carriers Association Auxiliary, Faith United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, KS, and the United Methodist Women’s church organization.

On August 8, 1992, she married Jim Byrum, Jr., in Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;He died July 17, 2014.

Bonnie is survived by: &nbsp;her children, Timothy (Cindy) Trapp of Nashville, TN, Terry (Heather) Trapp of Madisonville, KY, Tammy Trapp of Hutchinson, KS, and Teresa Lehmann (Ron) Corwin of Hutchinson, KS; granddaughter, Mauryn Lehmann; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: &nbsp;her parents; husband, Jim Byrum, Jr., sister, Barbara McVey; and Kendall Trapp, the father of Timothy, Terry, and Tammy.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Elliott Mortuary. &nbsp;Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, KS. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2024, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.

Janna Vivian Huschka, 68, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024, at her home in Hutchinson, Kansas. Janna was born June 8, 1955, in Great Bend, KS, the daughter of James and Joyce (Mohr) Lofland. On August 20, 1977, she married Kurt Huschka in Great Bend, KS. They shared 46 years of marriage together.

Janna graduated from Great Bend High School in 1973 and attended Barton Community College. She was a childcare provider and worked for Childcare Links in Hutchinson. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. She attended Central Baptist Church in Great Bend.

Janna was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James Lofland Jr., and a sister, Julia Barnes.

Survivors include her husband, Kurt; a son, Clint (Bianca) Huschka; a daughter, Bonnie Huschka-Cole; siblings, Jill (Derrel) Hopper, Jerry (Paige) Lofland, and Jackie (Lowayne) Lofland-Goosen; and four granddaughters, Lily Huschka, Savannah Huschka, Melita Huschka and Zoey Cole.

The Golden Anniversary season of Hutchinson Community College women's basketball has made its way to the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball National Tournament semifinals.

The top-seeded Blue Dragons (35-0) will meet the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters, seeded 20th, in the first national semifinal at 5 p.m. CDT (4 p.m. MDT) on Saturday at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Wyoming. No. 2 Wabash Valley and No. 3 Northwest Florida State play in the second semifinal on Saturday.

The game will be broadcast live on KHMY-FM (93.1) with Sean Boston (play-by-play) calling the action beginning at 4:45 p.m. (Hutchinson time). All tournament games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Monday's championship game to be televised on ESPNU.

The Blue Dragons make their seventh all-time national semifinal appearance, the first since 2019. The Dragons are 3-3 in national semifinal games, the last win coming in 2015, a 63-55 win over Walters State at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.

The Dragons advanced to the semifinals with a dominant 76-45 win over No. 8-seed New Mexico on Friday.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/jackson_hailey_x66o">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;led five Hutchinson players in double figures with 23 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;added 16 points. The Dragons limited New Mexico to 29.1 percent shooting, holding the Thunderbirds 31 points under their 76-point season average.

Saturday's first national semifinal will feature two of the nation's best defensive teams. The Blue Dragons rank ninth in the NJCAA in scoring defense at 53.3 points per game and fourth in field-goal defense at 32.7 percent shooting allowed. Eastern Arizona ranks third in scoring defense (49.3 ppg) and is No. 1 in field-goal defense (30.9 percent).

Eastern Arizona, a Region 1 at-large tournament team, has been ranked in the NJCAA Top 25 all season long. Seeded 20th in the tournament, the Gila Monsters have defeated No. 13 Pearl River 56-45, No. 4 Collin 61-60) and No. 5 Gulf Coast State 67-53 in their tournament run so far.

Eastern Arizona is the second Region 1 opponent the Blue Dragons will play in the national tournament this year. Hutchinson eliminated Region 1 champion Cochise 59-54 in Wednesday's second round. The Blue Dragons are 2-1 all-time against Region 1 teams in the NJCAA Tournament in their history.

The semifinal winners will have Easter Sunday off and will meet in the 2024 national championship game at 7 p.m. CDT (6 p.m. MDT).

HutchCC held a slim 19-13 lead after the first quarter, but dominated the next three frames. The Blue Dragons led 37-21 at halftime and 59-38 after three quarters.

New Mexico (27-7) struggled to shoot the floor, knocking down just 16 of 55 (29%) shots, including 3 of 21 from behind the arc.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons knocked down 29 of 60 (48%) of its shots, including 6 of 21 (29%) 3-pointers.

Hutchinson dominated the glass, outrebounding the T-Birds by 19, 47-28.

Hailey Jackson collected her third 20-point outing of her freshman campaign, leading the Blue Dragons with 23 points. Kiki Smith finished with 16 points, knocking down four 3-pointers. Monae Duffy secured her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds. 

Journey Armstead and Akaysha Muggeridge each scored 10 points, while Muggeridge also brought down eight rebounds and dished a team-high six assists.

Mary Jo “Jody” Velten, 81, died March 20, 2024, at her home in Arlington. She was born April 1, 1942, in Somerset, Kentucky, to John and Lois (Russell) Hood.

Jody graduated from Somerset High School in 1960, and went on to graduate from Berea College with a Chemistry degree and minor in Microbiology in 1964. She did graduate work at McNeese State University and UC Irvine, studying chemistry. Jody worked in the chemistry field for several years before staying home to care for her family.

On June 1, 1964, she married Terry Velten, in Berea, Kentucky. They shared nearly 60 years together.

Jody is survived by: husband, Terry Velten, Arlington; son, Joe Velten, Lancaster, South Carolina; daughter, Mimi Leis (Kurt), Wichita; sister, Jean Hanson (Dan), Chattanooga, Tennessee; brothers, Jim Hood (Linda), Savannah, Georgia, Bill Hood (Kim), Dallas, Georgia; grandchildren, Abigail Leis, Sophia Leis, Tanner Velten (Jennifer), Ryan Velten, Karley Velten (Joseph); step grandchild, Adrian Hewett; and great-grandson, Roman Taylor.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team makes their seventh overall appearance in the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament national quarterfinals and first since 2019 on Friday at the Ford Casper Center.

The top-seeded Blue Dragons (34-0) will meet the eighth-seed New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds (27-6) in the first of four quarterfinals at 1 p.m. (Noon Casper time). The Hutchinson-New Mexico winner advances to the national semifinals to meet the Gulf Coast State/Eastern Arizona winner at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The game will be broadcast live on KHMY-FM (93.1) with Sean Boston (play-by-play) calling the action beginning at 12:45 p.m. (Hutchinson time). All tournament games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Monday's championship game to by televised on ESPNU.

The Blue Dragons are 6-0 all-time in the NJCAA Tournament quarterfinals. The last time Hutchinson played in the quarterfinal round was 2019 when the Dragons defeated Odessa 66-50 in Lubbock.

Hutchinson survived an upset bid from No. 16-seed Cochise College in the second-round on Wednesday. Trailing by as many as nine points, the Blue Dragons rallied, getting 11 fourth-quarter points from leading scorer&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;- who was shut out on just two shot attempts in the first three quarters - to earn a 59-54 victory over the Apaches.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/jackson_hailey_x66o">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;scored a team-high 16 points to pace the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/armstead_journey_w1mg">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;had 12 points and four assists.

New Mexico comes from a tough Region 5 field that placed three teams - Odessa and Collin - in the national tournament field. The Thunderbirds are an at-large entry into the tournament after falling in the Region 5 semifinals two weeks ago.

New Mexico advanced to the national quarterfinals after a 74-61 win over Trinity Valley in the second round on Wednesday. The Thunderbirds used a 23-11 second-quarter to keep the Cardinals at arm's length throughout the second half. Cacia Antonio and Pania Davis had 20 points each to lead New Mexico. Antonio had a double-double with 11 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons are making their 11th NJCAA Tournament appearance, the 10th under head coach John Ontjes, who is 18-10 in the national tournament in his time in his 17 seasons with the Blue Dragons.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons to face New Mexico JC in NJCAA quarterfinals today

With spring drills beginning Monday for the Hutchinson Community College football team, head coach Drew Dallas has announced a reshuffling of coaching duties on his staff for the 2024 season.

The reorganization was prompted with the hiring of two new assistants for the upcoming season.

The new hires to the Blue Dragon staff are Matt Wallerstedt and Conner Lierz.

Wallerstedt is a veteran coach at all levels of college football, including Kansas State. He will become the Blue Dragons’ new defensive coordinator and linebackers’ coach.

Lierz is a familiar name to Blue Dragon football. He is a former offensive lineman who played at Hutchinson Community College in 2018 and 2019. Lierz is the new tight ends coach and assistant strength and conditioning coach

“We are certainly excited about the two new additions to our staff this offseason," Dallas said. "Coach Lierz is a former player who is from the state of Kansas and has great energy and an understanding on what we are all about here at Hutch.&nbsp; Coach Wally is also another Kansas guy.&nbsp; His experience and knowledge are a welcomed addition as we try to continue to elevate our program.”

The other six coaches on staff were with the Blue Dragons last season during a year the Dragons went through the regular season undefeated and won the Jayhawk Conference championship posting a 10-1 overall season.

Dallas has made some changes to some of their duties as well.

Dallas will continue to serve as the Blue Dragon quarterbacks’ coach. Dallas will be in his fifth season as head coach and has posted a four-year record of 38-4.

Matt Martin returns for his third season with the Blue Dragons. Martin is the Dragons’ assistant head coach, wide receivers coach and co-special teams’ coordinator.

Greg Cross returns for his seventh season and has been promoted to Associate Head Coach as well as his position duties with the running backs and as run-game coordinator.

Tony Kohling will be in his second season as Blue Dragon offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Andrew Krause returns for his ninth season on the Blue Dragon sideline. Krause returns to the defensive side of the ball as defensive backs coach, co-special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

Former Blue Dragon player Demarcus Roberson returns for his second season on staff as the Dragons’ defensive line coach and assistant strength and condition coach.

Davin Hawkins is back for his second season as the safeties’ coach and is now the head of the strength and conditioning program.

Taylor Martin returns as a student assistant for offensive quality control and Adonis Armstrong is back as a student assistant for defensive quality control.

“This is a great group of men that are not only great coaches but guys that are professionals and determined to develop our team in every way possible," Dallas said. "Their ability to adapt to new roles, teach the game of football and work at a championship level is second to none.&nbsp;

"They all bring something unique and special to the table and it has been fun attacking the off-season with them up to this point. I am excited to get going on the field with them in spring practice and am looking forward to building &amp; developing our team with them as we prepare for the ’24 season.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Connors State just missed the NJCAA Division I national championship game by three points. The No. 19 seeded Cowboys beat Moberly, Salt Lake and Hutchinson to get to the semifinals. All teams seeded higher than them. 

The No. 7 Triton College Trojans beat Connors State 87-84 Thursday to move on to the final game of the tournament. Head Coach Brian Burns is in his first year with the Trojans.&nbsp;

Sophomore guard Amar Augillard led Triton with 26 points. Freshman guard AJ Dixon scored 20. Freshman guard Khamani Cooper lead Connors State with 22. Sophomore forward Bradyn Hubbard scored 21.&nbsp;

Triton got off to a quick lead in the first half and led 51-37 at halftime. The Trojans shot 62.5% from the field and 50.0% from the 3-point line.&nbsp;

Connors State adjusted at halftime but dealt with foul trouble late in the game. Freshman forward Buddy Hammer Jr. received his fourth foul of the game with under 10 minutes left. Hammer Jr. was&nbsp; a presence for Connors State in the paint. He averaged 14 points a game during the tournament. Hammer Jr. scored a tournament high 22 points on Thursday.&nbsp;

With a little over a 1:30 to go, Connors State only trailed by two (86-84) after Hubbard made two free throws.&nbsp;

Sophomore guard Antonio Green Jr. got fouled and went to the line but missed both of his free throws for the Cowboys.&nbsp;

With about a minute left, Hammer Jr. went back into the game, but quickly fouled out. Triton's sophomore guard Dior Conner made 1-2 free throws to make it a three point game 87-84). Connors State had one more possession but the clock ran out.&nbsp;

Triton will play Barton in national championship on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m.&nbsp;

Glen Grunwald and Rick Kraus will have the game play-by-play on Saturday on Country 102.9 FM and KWBW 1450 AM/98.5 FM.

Joan Marie Tolar, 81, of Hutchinson, died March 25, 2024, at Hospice House. She was born January 11, 1943, in Hutchinson, to Eldon E. and Leona M. (Newlin) Fast.

Joan graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1961, where she was active in many musicals and Student Council, and from Hutchinson Community College in 1963. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and worked as an administrative assistant at the church for over 25 years, retiring in 2009. Joan also directed children’s choirs for more than 20 years and took the leadership for 10 Mother’s Day musicals and several children’s Christmas programs. She was a member of the Senior Choir, Anna Circle, numerous church committees, Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and served as a Stephen Minister. Joan also had been a member of YWCA in Nigeria, Sweet Adelines, and PEO Chapter CM.

On July 7, 1963, she married Robert H. “Bob” Tolar, in Hutchinson. They shared over 60 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: their sons, Dwight &amp; Mary Tolar of Manhattan, Donald Tolar of Hutchinson; grandsons, Alex Tolar of Manhattan, Drew Tolar and Reece Tolar of Cheney; and many extended family members.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce &amp; Ted Hesse, Jean &amp; Bob May; and brother-in-law, Byron Tolar and his wife Julia.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 140 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson. Burial will take place at a later date in Fairlawn Burial Park.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Block-By-Block Investment Program is an opportunity for residents of Hutchinson to come together, improve their neighborhoods, and foster a strong sense of community pride. 

The program is a collaborative effort between the City of Hutchinson and Hutch Rec’s Healthy Neighborhood Initiative aimed at encouraging clusters of neighbors to collaborate on exterior home improvement projects, enhancing curb appeal and fostering a sense of community. 

Eligible projects include a range of exterior improvements such as updating porches, replacing front doors, adding flowerbeds, and more.

In order to get funding, you must do the following:

Must be located in a featured neighborhoods south of 17th street. (SW Bricktown, The Founders Neighborhood, Grace Arbor, Creekside, Midtown, College Grove)

Have proximity of clustered properties to maximize impact.

CASPER, Wyo. — The Hutchinson Community College&nbsp; women's basketball team outscored Cochise (AZ) by nine in the second half to come-from-behind and win, 59-54.

The Blue Dragons advance to the quarterfinals of the national tournament and will play the winner of New Mexico and Trinity Valley (TX) on Friday at 1 p.m. CT in the Ford Wyoming Center.

Hutchinson (34-0) had a two-point lead with 2:47 to play in the first quarter, but would not lead again until 1:42 mark in the third quarter following an Akaysha Muggeridge 3-pointer. The Blue Dragons led 44-41 after three quarters of play.&nbsp;

The Apaches' largest lead of the game was nine points in the second quarter, while the Blue Dragons' largest advantage was eight in the final seconds of the ballgame.

Cochise (26-8) scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take a 45-44 lead. The Blue Dragons scored six straight to go in front 53-49, before the Apaches got within 53-51 with 1:28 to play.

After a HutchCC timeout, Jayhawk Conference and Region VI Most Valuable Player Kiki Smith stepped up big. The freshman from Topeka scored on a layup to push the lead to four, but that wasn't it. 

Smith then picked up a steal and scored to push the lead to 57-51 with 53 seconds left. Smith scored all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter, seven in the final 2:06.&nbsp;

Hailey Jackson led the Blue Dragons with 16 points, while Journey Armstead finished with 12 and Smith 11.&nbsp;

Cochise was led by Ali Hardwell with 17 points, Clara Gonzalez scored 16.

The Blue Dragons are now 21-12 all-time in national tournament games and are 4-2 in second round games. John Ontjes improves his record to 18-10 as the head coach of the Blue Dragons in the national tourney.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— It's the game of trading baskets, at least it was in the second half for Triton College and South Plains College Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;Triton ultimately walked away with a 88-87 win against the No.2 South Plains Texans.

The game came down to the very final seconds. With about .07 left on the clock, sophomore guard Jaborri McGhee got fouled on the 3-point line by Triton's freshman guard AJ Dixon.&nbsp; This gave South Plains the opportunity to tie it up, but McGhee made just two of the three free throws.&nbsp;

South Plains led at halftime 47-43. Triton took the lead for the first time in the second with 16:05 remaining on the clock (52-51). There were 17 lead changes and five tied up scores.&nbsp;

Sophomore guard Amar Augillard let Triton with 23 points. He also recorded four assists. Dixon scored 20 for the Trojans. Sophomore forward Malique Ewin recorded a double-double for South Plains with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jermahri Hill scored 18.&nbsp;

Triton will play the winner of No. 19 Connors State and No.11&nbsp; Hutchinson in the final four on Thursday, March 28 at 7:15 p.m.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Barton CC is the first team from Kansas to secure a spot in the semifinals of the 2024 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The No.1 Cougars beat the No.8 Northwest Florida State Raiders 87-73.&nbsp;

It was mainly an inside game, as both teams shot less than 30% from the 3-point line.

The Cougars led 42-35 at halftime and stayed out in front for the rest of the game. Barton proved successful by attacking the rim against the Raiders. 

They scored 50 points in the paint to Northwest Florida's 30 and shot 50% from the field.&nbsp;The Cougars also shot 72.7% from the free throw line (24-33).&nbsp;

Six off the Cougars roster scored in double figures.&nbsp;Freshman guard Brent Moss led Barton with 18 points. Moss was 6-10 overall and 6-6 from the 3-point line off the bench.&nbsp;

On the defensive end, Barton recorded 19 steals. Sophomore guard Cooper Jackson had seven steals.&nbsp;

Freshman guard Jamal Sumlin and sophomore guard/forward Tavion Banks had 16 points each for Northwest Florida State.&nbsp;

Barton will play the winner of No.13 Odessa College&nbsp; and No.5 Indian Hills in the last four of the tournament on Thursday, March 28, at 5 p.m.&nbsp;

Game time for the No. 1 Blue Dragons (33-0) and 16th-seeded Apaches (26-7) will be at 3:30 p.m. CT (2:30 p.m MT) at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Wyoming.

The game will be broadcast live on KHMY-FM (93.1) with Sean Boston (play-by-play) calling the action beginning at 3:15 p.m. (Hutchinson time). All tournament games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with next Monday's championship game to by televised on ESPNU.

The Blue Dragons will be making their 11th national tournament appearance, the first since 2022. The Blue Dragons are officially a 12-time national tournament qualifier, but the 2021 was wiped out by the Coronavirus Pandemic.

After winning the Region 6 Tournament - a 54-52 win over Butler on March 16 - the Blue Dragons earned their third national tournament opening-round bye and the first as the No. 1 overall seed. The Dragons have been a No. 2 overall seed three times (2012, 2014 and 2015).

The Blue Dragons are 3-2 all-time in second-round games and are 7-3 in opening games of a national tournament. the Blue Dragons are 20-12 all-time in the NJCAA Tournament.

Led by 2024 Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year and Region VI Tournament Most Valuable Player&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>, the Blue Dragons roll into the national tournament undefeated for the fifth time in team history, joining the 1977, 2012, 2014 and 2015 teams.

The Blue Dragons meet Region 1 champion Cochise for the first time ever. The Dragons are 1-1 against Region 1 teams in the national tournament, going 1-1 against Central Arizona in 2012 and 2013.

Cochise won its opening-round game national tournament game over Chattanooga State 72-43 on Tuesday.

Sumer Joan Foster, 47, of Buhler, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 22, 2024 at her home. She was born on September 25, 1976 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of Johnnie and Joy (Shuyler) Moore. 

She graduated from Buhler High School and later graduated from Hutchinson Community College. 

Sumer previously worked for Sterling Services in Sterling. She always wanted to be a cancer registrar. 

Sumer was a fan of arts and crafts and animals. 

Sumer is survived by her two sons, Tim Foster (Megan Schroeder) of Hutchinson, and Samuel (Ellianna) Foster of Hutchinson; parents, Johnnie and Joy Moore of Buhler; and brothers, Steve Moore of Buhler and Shaun (Penny) Moore of Hutchinson. 

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents. 

Cremation is planned. A private service will be held at a later date. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Buhler Mortuary to be used to defray funeral expenses and sent to PO Box 589, Buhler, KS 67522.

TOPEKA - Eagle Radio's Dustin Armbruster is the 2024 recipient of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hod Humiston Award.

The award is given annually to a Kansas broadcaster who has made significant contributions to the field of sports broadcasting as well as work in the community.&nbsp; The award is named for Hod Humiston who was the first television sportscaster in Kansas when he did play-by-play coverage of college games for KTVH (now KWCH TV), channel 12, Wichita.

Armbruster becomes the fifth Humiston award recipient who has worked in the Hays market joining Bob Davis, Wyatt Thompson, Steve Webster and Gerard Wellbrock.

Armbruster serves as the play-by-play voice of Hays High athletics on 96.9, KFIX as well as an analyst on Fort Hays State broadcasts. He is co-host of the Bull Morning Show on on KKQY (101.9) and is the&nbsp; operations manager at Eagle Radio-Hays. Armbruster is a multi-award KAB Award winner and two-time recipient of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Oscar Stauffer Award (2022, 2013) for high school play-by-play.
