HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Giuseppe's Jr.&nbsp;Submarine Sandwiches-Food Trailer will hold its first-ever Day of Thanks and Giving on Thursday, Nov. 28 at 4 p.m. The event will take place in front of Axe It Up Hutch at 110 W. 2nd Ave.

Giuseppe's Jr. Submarine Sandwiches-Food Trailer owner Nick Bianciella will be handing out over 400 half turkey sub sandwiches and bottled water to those in need.

"I really enjoy giving back as much as I can," Bianciella said. "Being a new food trailer, it just seemed like a good idea, and I want people to know I'm out there. I do definitely want to give back to all of the people that have helped me get to where I'm at so far."

The idea of the event is something that has really taken off for Bianciella.

"Really it just started out as something small too, it kind of got a lot bigger than I thought it was going to get," Bianciella said. "I originally planned on donating about 100 sandwiches to the homeless and just people that don't even have a meal that day. There has been many years I've been not around family and didn't really have much to do on Thanksgiving, so even people like that, not anybody specific."&nbsp;

The reason that Bianciella has been able to go from around 100 sandwiches to over 400 is thanks to other local businesses.

"I got some very generous donations from Jackson Meat, Smith's Market, and then Dillons Marketplace," Bianciella said. "That's where I get my stuff from typically and they stepped it up and now I'm able to donate about 450 sandwiches."&nbsp;

Because of the generous donations, Bianciella thought it'd be good to help out local law enforcement, as well. Bianciella plans on helping out the Hutchinson Fire Department, Hutchinson Police Department, Reno County Sheriff, Reno County EMS and the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I decided I wanted to give back to local law enforcement, the people that are on duty that day, away from their families."

Bianciella is the grandson of the original Giuseppe's location in Hutchinson in the 1970s and 1980s.&nbsp;

"They got all of their stuff from local vendors, as well," Bianciella said. "They got their meat from Jackson, and produce and stuff came from Smith's. I wanted to basically follow in that same exact footstep, the best that I could, cause I brought back a lot of the old memory and give back to the community what they've been missing for about 40 years."

"Axe It Up Hutch offered to donate their location that night for a place to sit down and eat," Bianciella said. "They're going to donate some desserts for that occasion, so it's going to be a pretty awesome time, I can't wait."

Bianciella and a few friends will be the ones wrapping all 450 sandwiches.

"I have a pretty good buddy of mine and another friend of mine, we're all going to tackle it the morning of," Bianciella said. "I'll probably be doing a lot of the prep the day before. Most of it's going to just be me and a couple of friends."&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jon Austin, DVM with Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital reminds pet owners to be careful to keep their pets safe during Thanksgiving celebrations.

"You see incidences of issues with pets that are getting food that they shouldn't, getting into things in the guest rooms that they shouldn't, medicine, things in purses," Austin said. "Always, just a word of thought for people, either confine your animals, maybe in the master bedroom where they're safe, where you can have a controlled environment in your home. If you let the pet be loose, then you need to talk to your guests about putting things up."

Not every guest is going to be used to having an animal around.

"They may not all be pet people that as odd as that might seem to us, because we're wired that way where we really enjoy animals," Austin said. "There are people who don't, or there are people who have allergies or there are people who are afraid. So again, you know, communication, communication with your, with your guests, communication with, with the other members of the household, you know, it might be best, like I said, just to confine your pet back in the master bedroom, you know, move their food and water, their bed back there, keep them back there where they're safe and in a controlled environment. You know that way you don't have to experience any of these issues. If you're just having a quick get together with, you know, people, and like you said, hosting, then your pet's inconvenience for a few hours and it stays safe. It's just a small sacrifice to avoid a huge issue."

If your pet gets into people food, it can cost a lot of time and money.

"Eating the pie, eating the turkey, pulling the turkey carcass off of the cutting board," Austin said. "When you're around the corner at the table, so they'll sure do it, and those things aren't good for them. You know, you can get anything from just a gastritis to diarrhea, vomiting. You can have something serious like pancreatitis or foreign body. You know, the, the, the poultry bones are not good. They're soft and they flex and they can really become a obstructive foreign body. Then you end up having to have, instead of enjoying your Thanksgiving meal, having a nap, you end up taking your dog for GI tract surgery."

Such surgeries can cost several thousand dollars, depending on how extensive the surgery has to be.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Our 31st annual Project Concern was a blessing again, and we are so thankful for all of our outstanding listeners who really helped us. November the 4th, we launched Project Concern and our deadline was 10:00 Monday morning. Because of your generosity, we were able to raise an incredible amount of money again.

Monday morning during the morning show from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., Glen Grunwald and Sue Achilles put on the infamous turkey outfits and we raised almost $3,000 in a 90-minute time period, which brought our total this year to $11,643. 

What does that mean? Well, we are going to give Dillons a check for $8,733. They, in turn, are giving us an additional $2,000 in gift cards, so the buying power there is around $11,000 that will be turned over to the Salvation Army for people to be able to pick those certificates up on Tuesday and Wednesday.

We will write a check to the Friendship Meals for $1,455 and the Christian Soup Ministry for $1,455. Major Paul James said that 752 families applied and were screened by the Salvation Army to get assistance. That equates to about 2,635 people.

Project Concern brings in over $11K in donations

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Board of Education approved in October the use of $1.6 million in capital outlay to go with the $872,211 in grant funds already accepted to put a Lil' Hawks Daycare 0-3 facility on ground on the northwest corner next to Morgan Elementary.

"Having the child care center is going to allow us to expand 25 slots for zero to three students, which is what our community needs," said Ashley Webster. "They need child care. They need everyday traditional childcare, so it will allow us to not only expand, but expand our hours and expand our programming."

The expansion means parents won't have to find fill in the summer.

"We have only been a 10 month programming, um, but through the support of the Reno County Child Care Task Force, we have been able to secure them some funds additionally to the capital outlay that the board approved to be able to offer childcare 12 months a year."

Webster believes in the staff that she has, but she knows they will need more people.

"We already have a great staff of 15 staff members, and we have the support of the leadership team who backs that childcare," Webster said. "We are going to have to advertise. We are going to have to, you know, try to enlist people who want to come out and grow brains and not brew coffee, but I think we can do that. I think we have a great culture, and so we're building on a culture that we already have, and we are building on a credibility of our culture and our care, and so I think that's our advantage."

Now that they have solidified a location, they can meet with the city and the architects to get the details of the Morgan Elementary site worked out and begin site preparation.

New childcare building to allow for more programming

"It went really well," James said. "We had about 230 families. I think some of that, because it was really warm still at that time, so I think we would have had more, but we had a lot more gloves and hats to give. Typically we don't have that many, and so we were grateful to have more of those, and of course we give out not just coats, but hats and gloves and blankets as well, and we had more blankets to give out this year too."

Project Concern's final push is Monday, and there is a lot of Thanksgiving need this year.

"We have right around 700 families that have signed up for Project Concern," James said. That's 2,611 people that will help this year, and so we're excited for that. As far as kids signed up for toys, we're already at 987 children, and last year we were like 1,012, so that's still with two weeks to go."

The giving for Project Concern as of Friday is still below last year's numbers, so if you could bring by some funds Monday morning to the EAGLE Media studios, that would be appreciated. One of the best parts is you can do it anonymously. Also, if you know when you are going to give, you can let the mail appeal people at the Salvation Army know and they will tailor those mailings to when you are ready.&nbsp; 

"If you end up getting on that list, if you make a note on the remit slip and say, you know what, I don't want to give 25 times a year or whatever that might be, you can say, no, I really, I give during the Christmas season, or I give four times a year, you can put that note on there, and that company will adjust that. Or if you don't want to be on the list at all, you can say, please take me off the list, the current company we have has been really good about doing that."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Net Zero home produces as much electricity as it consumes.

To reach that goal, you'll need a solar system. Your solar panels can be mounted on your roof or ground mounted.

Let’s start with some terminology. KW stands for Kilowatts and indicates how powerful your panels are. The panels on the house I’m buying are 10.5 KW. When I’m looking for a charging station for my EV (Electric Vehicle), I’m looking for one at least 150 KW, some are as strong as 350 KW. Your 240 V outlet for your clothes dryer or oven is about 10 KW. The term kWh (kilowatt hour) refers to how much power you use or return to the grid. An incandescent 100 watt lightbulb will use 100 watts in an hour.

Leave that on for 10 hours and you will use 1,000 watts or one kilowatt (1 kWh). KW is the strength and kWh is what you consume. By the way, a 100 watt equivalent LED bulb uses only 14 watts in an hour - a savings of 86%!

You can buy whatever sized system your budget can afford and roof/property space can accommodate. Let’s assume a typical system is a 10 KW system. A 10 KW system will produce 10 kWh in an hour when the sun is shining. An average house will consume 35 kWh in a day so as long as you have three and a half hours of sun, you will not buy any electricity. 

Now, where does the extra electricity go if you produce more than you consume you ask ? It goes back into the grid as a credit which you can use another day or at night. This assumes you use Evergy with Net Metering.

The policy on banking the extra electricity varies depending on where you live and how old your system is. The panels on the house I’m buying were installed before July 1, 2014 so my credits roll over month to month but are zeroed out April 1. A friend in Maryland gets a check for any excess April 1; we are not so fortunate. However, if you add panels today, the credit will be zeroed out at the end of every month. The cost of a system is roughly $3,000 per 1 KW. Thus a 15 KW system will cost about $45,000, a 10 KW system is $30,000 and a 5 KW system is roughly $15,000. Generally a solar company will ask for a year worth of electric bills and calculate what size system would be appropriate for you. 

You won’t get a check if you produce extra in Kansas. A ground mounted system will be slightly more since the rack is an additional cost and you will need to run wire underground for a distance.

On average, a solar system will pay for itself in 12 years. If there’s a good chance you’ll be moving, you might think twice. I have retired and plan to be in my home in Hutch for the duration, so it would be worth it. Total what you spend per year and divide your cost by that total to determine pay off years. For example, if I buy a $10,000 system and save $1,000/year, it will be paid off in 10 years. Also be aware that due to the Inflation Reduction Act, you will receive a 30% tax credit so you just saved almost a third. You’re welcome. 

Whether or not adding a solar system to your house will improve its value is to be debated. When I had the house I’m buying appraised, the appraiser said she did not consider the solar panels in the valuation. Some might avoid a house with solar. I feel I got a $30,000 10.5 KW system for free.

Be wary of free solar systems. You've been around the sun a few dozen times and know if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Those who install panels for free will often keep most of the electricity for themselves. Read the fine print in any contracts before you sign.

Optimally, panels should be facing south and at a 30 degree angle (varies by latitude).

Panels not facing south will still produce electricity, just less effectively. East facing will produce in the morning and west facing in the afternoon. Longer summer days will&nbsp;produce far more than the shorter days of the winter, however you’ll have high demand&nbsp;from your air conditioner in the summer. 

Flipping my gas furnace and hot water heater to electric is on my to do list to avoid putting any carbon in the atmosphere. We’ll see if solar energy produced on short winter days can power them.

Some people add batteries to their configuration. The PowerWall by Tesla is commonly&nbsp;used. They cost about $10,000 each (minus 30% tax credit) so it’s a serious commitment. Why would you use a battery? You can use them to power your needs at night. You could conceivably go completely off grid if your nerves can take it. If the grid goes down in a storm your sump pump and refrigerator would still function.

Alternatively, if you have an electric vehicle, you can configure your system so the EV will power your house if the grid goes down. Also, since your credit will be wiped out at the last day of the month, this would be a way to keep some of the power you produced from the last day to the next month. One PowerWall will hold 13.5 kWh so you might need more than one.

Selecting a company to install solar is a challenge. After interviewing several companies, I found that King Solar (<a href="https://www.kingsolar.net">https://www.kingsolar.net</a>) in Yoder is the only vertically integrated solar company in Kansas that specializes in solar. Vertical integration means they handle everything in-house (sales, design, installation, electrical and service). This gives them a technical knowledge of the entire process and means the buck stops with them so finger pointing is avoided if a component fails. Having all of their team living in the Wichita/Hutchinson area also means they can offer quicker response time for service calls than their out-of-town competition.

With a few exceptions, most solar companies either do sales or installation and very few have any type of service department. All of the competitors in the Wichita area have other business ventures (such as general contracting, environmental remediation, electrical contracting, etc) that in my opinion distracts from their ability to offer dedicated solar services. King Solar is the oldest solar company in Kansas that is still in business&nbsp;(established in 1982) and is typically at or near the lowest cost option because they have invested in a warehouse to avoid most material supply issues.

Net Zero: Solar 101

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shiann Benson is the Allen Samuels CDJR Hero of the Month. 

She was nominated by Bryan Montoya.&nbsp;“She would put serving her community and environment before herself," Montoya said. "She is always willing to help anyone out.”

Benson said becoming a firefighter was a choice she wanted to make.

"I have always wanted to help people any way that I could," Benson said. "Being a volunteer was a good way to do just that."

She's glad to be able to be a part of where she lives this way.

"What I enjoy most is that I get to help my community, as well as other communities when they need it," Benson said. "My long-term goal is to either go full time as a firefighter or become an EMT."

She said the group of first responders she works with is important to her.

"As a volunteer, you become part of a family," Benson said. "I couldn't just choose one first responder that I look up to. Every single one of the people I work with are the people I look up to."

"Seven years prior was kind of the cycle for the KESA 1.0 and was really geared to look at the district as a whole and some processes and things," said Haven USD 312 Superintendent Craig Idacavage. "They focused on five R's and you had to build a rubric and grade yourself around those and a lot of hoops and narratives to write and to jump through."

The paperwork requirements for the new system are less stringent, while keeping up standards.

"It really focuses more on what is going on in the classroom and the building-wise through high quality instruction, through standards alignment, through balanced literacy and so those things that are starting in the classroom first," Idacavage said.

The accreditation status of each district or system will be presented to the Kansas State Board of Education during the summer of 2025.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you're headed out of town next week, it won't be as hard on your wallet as previous years at the pump.

"We definitely have something to be thankful for this holiday with gas prices," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Here in Kansas, the average is $2.72 a gallon. That's about 30 cents less than the national average, a little bit more than that, and sixth lowest in the nation. Kansas, as usual, we have pretty good gas prices to be thankful for. If you're traveling anywhere south and southeast of here as well, that's where you'll see the lowest prices in the nation."

Locally, prices are on either side of the state average.

"Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, Texas all have some of the lowest prices in the country," Steward said. "If you're staying here in the region, don't expect to see prices too much higher than we have here, and in many cases, lower. If you happen to be headed to Colorado, their average is $2.94 a gallon, so about 20 cents more on average if you're headed there."

Gas prices OK for Thanksgiving travelers

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month Misty McCurdy is a math teacher at Reno Valley Middle School in Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309.&nbsp;

"I love that I get super close with my students," McCurdy said. "My class sizes are usually smaller than the regular class sizes so we just kind of make a little family. I do it different for both grades because I teach both 7th and 8th grade. Eighth grade I pre-teach whatever the 8th grade teacher is getting ready to teach so that my kids that I have are more confident once the 8th grade teacher starts that topic or that standard. They've seen it and then when she starts it they are kind of like light bulb moment like, oh I already know this, you know, I'm kind of ahead of the game. Seventh grade a little bit more just tutoring and working on like maybe skills from a year or two ago that they're still struggling on."

There are still some skill gaps from the COVID-19 years that McCurdy is helping fill in.&nbsp;

"Kids seem to struggle a lot with fractions," McCurdy said. "They just don't seem to like them and I think it's just because they don't understand the concept of a fraction early. It's hard to visualize, so that's usually the first thing that we start with is what's a fraction and what can you do with it and what's it look like and how do you add it and we just kind of go from there."

It's rewarding for McCurdy to hear from former students how they are using what they have learned.

"Just two weeks ago I was at a wedding from a retired teacher, and there was a bunch of previous students there and one of them hollered at me and said, 'Hey, Mrs. McCurdy, you're never going to believe this, I just used the pythagorean theorem recently,' I think this kid's about 25 now and I'm like 'What? Tell me all about it.' All the kids at the table looked at him and kind of started giggling and he was doing roof trusses and their number wasn't working."

McCurdy's class received Pizza from Pizza Hut and ice cream from Braum's to commemorate her award.
