LENEXA, Kan. — The Buhler High School swim &amp; dive team placed 8th at the class 5-1A state meet held at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center.

This is the highest finish the team has ever had at the state meet, per head coach Shane DeWeese.

The 200 Yard Medley Relay team of Hudson DeWeese, Jonah Gardner, Payton Frees and Marshall Birney set a new school record and finished 5th with a time of 1:43.90.

DeWeese finished 8th in the 200 Yard IM, setting a school record with a time of 2:07.97 in the prelims. Isaak Neighbor finished 12th.

Scott Schweizer finished 11th in diving with a score of 279.65 in the finals.

The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team of DeWeese, Gardner, Frees and Birney set a new school record and finished 6th with a time of 1:31.51.

Gardner finished 6th in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, setting a new school record of 1:03.13.

The 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of DeWeese, Gardner, Frees and Birney set a new school record of 3:26.57.

8 a.m. Sunday UPDATE from Hutchinson Fire Department:&nbsp;The Hutchinson Fire Department has had discussions with Kansas Gas this morning and the evacuation area has been minimized to the following area. Main Street from Avenue D down to Avenue G 1 Block East and West of Main Street on Avenue E. This includes all businesses on both sides of Main Street and 1 residential home on Avenue F. Currently there are 18 businesses and 1 residential home without gas service. If you live outside of the stated area, you may return to your home.

Kansas Gas will continue to have a large presence in this area for the next couple of days.  We ask that you continue to avoid the area as work is being done to remedy the situation.  Kansas Gas is continuing to monitor the area for gas and will continue throughout the next couple of days. 

Overnight, crews have made significant progress and all hands are working on fixing the situation. 

If residents in the area are concerned about their home having gas inside, Kansas Gas has a hotline to call.  Please call 888-482-4950 and reference the Hutchinson incident.  Kansas Gas has technicians in the area that will come by and monitor your home for gas.  If you feel you have a gas emergency, please contact 911 for HFD response.

9 p.m. UPDATE: Officials tell us that as of 8 p.m., the evacuation zone has been reduced to the area bounded by Avenue C to Avenue F, and Walnut to Adams.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The evacuation will remain in place until morning while Kansas Gas Service repairs the gas main. Once that repair is complete, Kansas Gas Service will contact each resident to restore service.&nbsp;

ORGINAL POST: Shortly before 9:30 a.m., the Hutchinson Fire Department said they were called to the area of B and Main for reports of a natural gas odor. Responding crews could not find a source at that location so they moved their way down Main Steet.&nbsp;

When they arrived to the corner of Avenue E and Main Street, they saw the gas coming up through the road and sidewalk.&nbsp; They entered the business there and their monitors activated.

Crews noted that all the occupants of the building were out, and they exited the building and within 30 seconds the building exploded.&nbsp;

Officials said that the fire is being fed by a 10-inch natural gas line. Officials
say that the body of the fire is under control, but the street and fire remains
on fire due to the gas leak.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Fire Department crews were forced to take a
defensive stance and are using unmanned water streams to fight the fire.&nbsp; 

Mayor Stacy Goss said that all the City of Hutchinson fire
crews are deployed along with crews from Reno County Fire District Number 3,
Buhler and South Hutchinson fire departments. 

The area between Avenue A and Frank Hart Crossing and Popular
Street and Adams Street are currently under an evacuation.&nbsp; 

There has been an evacuation and warming center set up at
the Salvation which is located at 700 North Walnut. 

Kansas Gas and Evergy have crews on the scene monitoring the
evacuated buildings. Kansas Gas released a statement to Hutch Post:

“Our crews have responded to 428 S. Main in Hutchinson,
Kansas and are working with the Hutchison Fire Department and local emergency
responders. More information will be released once officials have completed
their investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The primary concern of Kansas Gas Service is safety. As a
precautionary measure, the area around the location is being isolated and
secured.&nbsp;

If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately then
call 911 and our Emergency Line 888-482-4950. Do not use any electrical
equipment such as phones, garage doors, or light switches until you are a safe
distance away from the odor.”

We are scheduled to receive another update from the
Hutchinson Fire Department.&nbsp; We will
update this story as new information becomes available.

UPDATED: Hutchinson Fire Department battles southside fire, evacuation zone set up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — 43 Hutch Post area boys wrestlers have qualified for state tournaments after regionals were held across the state on Friday and Saturday.

The state wrestling championships will be held Feb. 28-March 1 at four different sites. Class 6A will be held in Overland Park, class 5A in Park City, class 4A in Salina and classes 3-1A will be in Hays.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — D.J. Dudley has had some big moments as a Blue Dragon, but none bigger than his basket in the final seconds of a 64-63 win over Butler on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons are now 17-10 overall, 13-8 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson moves in front of Butler for the No. 4 spot in the conference standings with three games to play.&nbsp;

With Butler (18-9, 13-8) in front 63-62, Hutchinson called a timeout with the ball in their frontcourt with 10 seconds to play. Bo Aldridge drove the ball into the lane and put up a shot with just over three seconds to play, Dudley crashed and used his right hand to tap it in with 1.5 seconds remaining.

Russell Branch tried a 70-foot desperation heave as time expired, but came up short, handing the Grizzlies their second loss to the Blue Dragons in the regular season.&nbsp;

Butler led 35-24 at halftime and led by as many as 14 with 4:13 to play in the first half.&nbsp;

Hutchinson held a few leads within the first four minutes of the game, and then would not hold another lead until Aldridge made a layup with 1:22 to play for a 62-60 lead. The Grizzlies would tie the game up with 1:08 to play.

Hutchinson will host Pratt on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena, while Butler will host Garden City at 7:30 p.m. in the Power Plant.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 8 Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team scored just five points in the fourth quarter, but did just enough defensively to defeat Butler, 54-49 on Saturday afternoon in the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons are now 24-3 overall, 18-3 in the Jayhawk Conference. HutchCC maintains second place in the conference standings with three games remaining.

Butler (20-6, 15-6) pulled within 41-40 with 2:59 to play in the third quarter, the closest the game had been since it was 8-6 in the first period.

Hutchinson responded with 11-0 run to go in front 52-40 with 9:10 to play in the fourth quarter. Butler scored the next nine points to pull within three with just under four minutes to go.

The Blue Dragons held the Grizzlies scoreless the final 3:47 of the game, while the lone Hutchinson basket came by Katie Duncan with 1:32 left. The Duncan bucket ended a 7:38 scoreless drought for Hutchinson.

Hailey Jackson led the way for Hutchinson with 13 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Jackson also finished with 12 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season and 12th of her career. Kahlen Norris scored 12, while Duncan finished with 10 points.

Keegan Yarick scored a game-high 14 points for the Grizzlies, which never held a lead in the game.

Hutchinson will host Pratt on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena, while Butler will host Garden City at 5:30 p.m. in the Power Plant.

🏀 Hutch Post Area scoreboard for Friday, Feb. 21

Halstead High School graduate Karenna Gerber is now the all-time leading rebounder in Pittsburg State University women's basketball history with 843.

The 6-foot senior set the new mark in an 81-74 win over Nebraska Kearney on Thursday in Kearney. She surpassed Lizzy Jeronimus (2012-15) for the record.

Gerber finished the game with 24 points, going 11 of 11 from the field, which tied the school record for the best field goal percentage in a single-game.

Gerber graduated from Halstead in 2021 and was a two-time class 3A all-state performer. She was also a four-time all-Central Kansas League selection.

Pitt State is 24-2 overall, 16-0 in the MIAA and ranked No. 5 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll.&nbsp;

Now that the winter storm has moved on, we invited Hutchinson Public works director Cecil Weible to talk about the snow removal.   

He said that his crews have been busy.  They have had crews out twenty-four hours a day for the last three days.  

Temperatures made the difference in how they decided to treat the clean-up from the storm.  Because of the frigid temperatures, they elected to plow first.  

Weible said “In these temperatures salt takes a very long time to activate and work. “  

They concentrated on plowing first, get as much of the snow off the road.  After they got to the point where there was no more plowing to be done other than widening then they started to put the salt down.   

 Not only did they treat the roads differently, but they also handled the snow removal differently because of the snow type.   

They decided not to pre-treat this time. They said with the wind plowing and the snow type the pretreatment would have caused the snow to stick, and mother nature actually helped by blowing the snow off the roads.  

Now that the sun is out and warmer temperatures are ahead, there is a new concern that crews are prepared for.  

Once the snow starts melting, crews will keep salt on it.  The worst part is you have melting during the day, but at night it freezes, and you begin to have black ice. Crews will be out putting salt down, keeping the roads in that condition.

Public works director talks about response to snow storm

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 100 block of North Main on the east side. Today's article focuses on the 122 N. Main address.

Before the current building was reconfigured, it was the P. Martin Dry Goods store at 118-122 N. Main.

Then in 1906, J.W. Jenkins started a music store with his sons and the building became a single store at 122 N. Main. The first photo shows that music store in 1922 during an auto parade.

Jenkins was at that location for 20 years.

In 1928, Jones-O'Neal Shoe Co. started in this location and was there until 1986 for a 58-year run. The second photo shows Jones-O'Neal during the 1946 Prairie Pow-Wow.

The third photo shows the Jones-O'Neal storefront in 1960.

The fourth photo shows Jones-O'Neal in 1975 with a different storefront.

In 1988, Payton Optical moved there after a long occupancy at the Wolcott Building, which was just being razed. They were at the 122 N. Main location for 29 years of their 70-year family run.

In 2017, Greg Payton retired and sold the business to the Specs Eyewear Co. of Wichita. The fifth photo shows the 122 N. Main location today, still Specs, with the property under the JGP Properties ownership.

🎧 BW Morning Show Interview: David Foster, Hutchinson YMCA

Following approval at the USD 309 board of education meeting on Tuesday, Parker Bruce has been named the next head coach of the Nickerson High School football team.

Bruce currently serves as the head boys basketball coach for the Panthers.

The 25-year old graduated from Andale High School in 2018 and then played football at Butler Community College and then at Kansas State.

Bruce takes over for Taylor Bauman, who resigned following the season. The Panthers went 1-8 during the 2024 season with its lone win coming against Lyons.&nbsp;

Bauman led the Panthers for three seasons, going 3-24, each season finishing with a 1-8 record.

The last time Nickerson has won more than one game came in the 2019 season, a 4-5 mark. The last Panthers team with a winning record came in 2017, when NHS finished 7-3 under current Hutch High head coach, Mike Vernon.

This Saturday, HutchCC and the Cancer Council of Reno County&nbsp; &nbsp;will be holding their 13 Annual “Pink Out” night at the Sports Arena as the Blue Dragons host the Butler CC Grizzlies in a Jayhawk Conference Tilt. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Emily Brown of the Cancer Council of Reno County talks about the importance of this event. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The cause is not lost on the game. &nbsp;Gooch talked about how cancer touches everyone, even if it isn’t directly. &nbsp;&nbsp;
