WICHITA, Kan. — The Greater Wichita YMCA has met the requirements for a $2 million challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation, marking another milestone in the capital campaign for the new Hutchinson YMCA.

To secure the funding, the Y was required to raise an additional $7 million by October 2025. Officials said the goal was reached ahead of schedule, allowing the Mabee Foundation’s pledge to be fulfilled.

“The fact that we are able to say, ahead of schedule, that we have secured a $2 million challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation speaks to the support and commitment the community has for the Y, and we’re incredibly thankful,” said Mike Folks, Hutchinson YMCA board chair. “Our entire community came together to make this possible, and we can’t wait for the doors to open.”

Construction of the 75,000-square-foot facility began in January at 20th Street and Lorraine on land donated through a partnership with Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System. The new Y is scheduled to open in 2026 and will serve as what leaders describe as a new “front door” for health care delivery in Hutchinson.

“We are extremely grateful to the Mabee Foundation, our other invaluable partners and the community-at-large who embraced our vision and made it their own,” said Ronn McMahon, Greater Wichita YMCA president and CEO. “We’re building more than walls. It’s about creating an even healthier and more connected future for Reno County residents.”

The new Hutchinson Y will feature a destination aquatics center, indoor track, gymnasium, expanded gymnastics center, fitness studios, a community room, and additional family spaces. Programs will include youth development, family engagement and wellness opportunities. Income-based financial assistance will be available to ensure access for all residents.

Despite a rainy start Friday, attendance at the Kansas State Fair surged over the weekend, drawing some of the largest crowds in recent years. Fair officials reported that 102,218 people attended opening weekend, with 43,888 visitors on Saturday alone — just shy of a single-day record.

Organizers noted that new ticket-scanning technology is helping them track attendance more accurately than in years past, when paper tickets were weighed to estimate crowd sizes.

Among the highlights of this year’s fair is the 1861 Club, now in its second year. Built by the Kansas State Fair Foundation, the venue has quickly become a popular year-round event space, hosting weddings, fundraisers, and corporate gatherings. Executive Director James Fisher said the club is already booking events as far ahead as 2027.

The Foundation also brought back a crowd favorite absent since 2019: saltwater taffy. Sold in assorted bags featuring 12 flavors — including buttered popcorn and cinnamon — the Kansas State Fair–branded treat is available at the 1861 Club and at the official merchandise booth.

That booth, located in the Fountain House building, is also seeing record sales this year. A new on-demand shirt printing system allows fairgoers to customize designs, colors, and sizes, with plans to fully renovate the space into a retail-style store by next year.

Fair officials say improvements across the fairgrounds, including new asphalt, upgraded lighting, and enhanced sound systems, have drawn praise from visitors — even those traveling cross-country to experience multiple state fairs.

“The fairgrounds look great, and the energy this weekend showed that,” Fisher said. “It’s exciting to be part of something that adds so much value to the community.”

Day three brings a full day of shows, exhibits and entertainment at Kansas State Fair 

The Hutchinson Police Department has released the results of its recent participation in the statewide “You Drink. You Drive. You Lose.” enforcement campaign.

Over the course of 2.5 weeks, officers conducted overtime saturation patrols aimed at curbing impaired driving. According to HPD, the extra patrols resulted in 34 citations, 18 warnings, three warrants cleared, and contact with 51 individuals. Officers also made one DUI arrest during the campaign.

Police emphasized that impaired driving remains a personal choice — one that can carry serious consequences. “Impaired driving is a choice that YOU make. Make the right choice,” the department said in its release.

HPD also reminded motorists to always buckle up. “Your seat belt is your best defense against impaired drivers,” the release noted. “Every trip, every time.”

The campaign was part of a larger statewide effort to reduce impaired driving crashes and fatalities by increasing visibility and enforcement on Kansas roadways.

Day two of the Kansas State Fair promises something for everyone, blending the best of agriculture, arts, food, and entertainment into a full day of activity.

The day begins bright and early at 7 a.m. with the Plein Air Art Competition along Lake Talbott East, where artists capture the fairgrounds in fresh morning light. At 8 a.m., agriculture takes center stage with the 4-H and FFA beef, goat, lamb, and swine market shows, plus working equitation demonstrations. Barn tours kick off at Moo-U, offering families a hands-on learning experience.

Visitors can also stop by the Oz Gallery for demonstrations from Kansas woodcarvers and view the professional art exhibits set up around Lake Talbott.

By 10 a.m., families can catch Dr. Goddard’s Lab in the Education Center, cheer on Hedrick’s Pig Races, or head to the Expo Center for the majestic Draft Horse Show. Food competitions get underway with the King Arthur Donut Contest and the Youth Favorite Cookie Contest Judging.

At noon, the Hutchinson Zoo takes over the Education Center, while crowds gather for the Pies, Pies, and More Pies Contest in the Domestic Arts Building. Families can also enjoy Glenda &amp; Mike’s Magic and Ventriloquism Show lakeside.

Afternoon: Contests and Entertainment

The afternoon brings crowd favorites like the Butter Sculpture Contest and the lively Celebrity Grape Stomp at the Gottschalk Park Gazebo. Music and movement fill the grounds with the Kansas Kountree Kloggers and live performances by Sweet Rhubarb.

For a dose of humor and amazement, hypnotist Ron Diamond performs in the Peoples Bank &amp; Trust Arena, while Gottschalk Park hosts both the Cowboy Circus and It’s Showtime Circus.

Evening: Music, Magic, and Mainstage Acts

As the sun sets, competition heats up with the Draft Horse Pull in the Expo Center and the 4-H/FFA Grand Drive at the Prairie Pavilion. The evening also features Catholic Mass, the Pinewood Derby races, and the poetry showcase Eat Your Words.

Live music fills the air with Hyway 14, 80 Proof Alice, The Girls Next Door, and the Great Plains Jazz Orchestra, spread across various stages.

Finally, the night caps off in grand fashion at 7:30 p.m. with world-renowned comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham taking the Nex-Tech Grandstand, bringing laughs to close out a jam-packed day at the Fair.

🏈 Week 1 Hutch Post area high school football schedule

The 2025 Kansas State Fair kicks off today with a special celebration honoring seniors during "Young at Heart Day". Guests 55 and older will enjoy discounted $2 gate admission as the Fair officially opens its 10-day run at the Hutchinson fairgrounds.

The day begins early with the Working Equitation Show at 8 a.m. in Expo II, followed by popular family attractions such as Moo-U Guided Barn Tours at the Birthing Center and Dr. Goddard’s Lab demonstrations at the Education Center. Throughout the morning, visitors can also catch Hedrick’s Pig Races, the Chainsaw Woodcarvers, and a variety of art demonstrations in the Oz Gallery.

At 11 a.m., the official Opening Ceremony takes place at the Peoples Bank and Trust Arena, followed by a ribbon-cutting at 11:15 a.m. The afternoon schedule is packed with livestock competitions including goat, swine, sheep, and beef showmanship events, along with the Draft Horse Show in Expo Center. Visitors can also enjoy special contests such as homemade ice cream judging and the “It’s All About the Bread” competition.

Entertainment highlights include the Cowboy Circus, Ron Diamond the Hypnotist, and “It’s Showtime Circus” at Gottschalk Park. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the coaching staff intact after a national title run and a roster heavy on returners at the right spots, No. 1 Hutchinson Community College heads to Roswell this week seeking a clean, businesslike opener against New Mexico Military Institute. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday from Colt Field on the NMMI campus.&nbsp;

The game will be broadcasted on the flagship station for Blue Dragon football and basketball, <a href="https://streamdb5web.securenetsystems.net/v5/KHUT">Country 102.9 KHUT-FM</a>&nbsp;with Countdown to Kickoff starting at 12:30 p.m.&nbsp;

“We’re where we need to be,” head coach Drew Dallas said. “Every day gets a little cleaner. Now it’s time to gauge where we’re at against another opponent.”

Dallas expects a charged, on-campus military-school atmosphere and a natural-grass surface reminiscent of last November’s trip to Georgia Military. “It’ll be a rowdy environment with the cadets right on top of you,” he said. “Handling our emotions and the little things, penalties, ball security, quarterback-center exchange, that’s how you escape Week 1 with a win when both teams are unveiling new wrinkles.”

Dallas named Christian Johnson the starting quarterback and praised his command of the system. “He’s taken that next step,” Dallas said. “He can make every throw and make plays with his feet. His experience gives us stability early.”

Offensive Coordinator Tony Koehling called this “as much experience as we’ve had, top to bottom,” and said Johnson’s third year should expand what the Dragons can do at the line of scrimmage. “With Christian being a third-year guy, it helps the offensive line, too,” Koehling said. “We can put a little more on the quarterback’s back with in-game adjustments.”

Dallas also emphasized Hudson Ferralez as a priority No. 2 who will see meaningful early reps. “Hudson will be a big part of what we do,” he said. “We want to bring him along the way we did with Christian last year.”

The run game shifts from a feature back to a committee after the graduation of Waymond Jordan Jr., who's now the starting tailback at Southern California, Dallas pointed to Rashaud Hurt and Titus Petteway among a “good host” of backs. “Early in the year you work through rotations with live tackling,” he said. “Who protects the ball? Who gets yards after contact? Those answers come under the lights.”

On the perimeter, returning playmakers Derrick Salley Jr., L.T. Robinson and Kordell Gouldsby headline the receivers. Dallas said Gouldsby’s leap from return ace to complete receiver has been noticeable: “We’ve known what he can do with the ball in his hands; now he’s a real receiver threat.” Tight end is deep and diverse with Cole Coonrod, Jabari Harris and Kaiden Seamster, giving the staff personnel flexibility.

“The identity may tweak week to week,” Koehling said. “We’ll stay true to our principles, but we’ll do what this group does best.”

Koehling’s biggest early read: the interior is ahead of schedule, tackles are talented but new. “We’re really strong inside at center and both guards, experience and depth, and we can rotate,” he said. At tackle, transfers Gus Thuston and Leon Brigham “fit right away,” while 6-foot-9 Jacob Hawks (Washburn Rural) is a massive, high-ceiling freshman who “might be one of the biggest recruits to come out of here if it clicks.”

The line has “really gotten good” at gap-scheme concepts. “Our counters and power, they understand how to run it versus a lot of fronts,” Koehling said. Simplicity is the philosophy: “I try to keep it universal so they can play fast.”

Defensive Coordinator Matt Wallerstedt said the unit is “executing at a high level” with a second offseason in the scheme. “We’ve got good depth; we can keep guys fresh,” he said. “This D-line can be special.”

Inside, K.J. Henson has paired his pass-rush with improved run fits; Jeffrey Manns II can play both three-tech and nose; TaVeon Robinson has matured from raw to explosive; newcomers Jacob Griffin and Elijah Jackson add heft. “They’ve grown up,” Wallerstedt said. “We can line-change up front and still affect the passer.”

Linebacker is deeper than last fall. Brady Whitman and freshman Jack Sells are battling at Mike; Tyler Lassiter (Garden City transfer) brings throwback physicality as he returns from a foot issue; Teegan Haines (McPherson HS, Garden City CC), Chris Robinson (Oklahoma State) and Amir Hill (moved down from safety) round out a long, athletic room. “We’ll grade and rotate,” Wallerstedt said, noting last year’s successful week-to-week combinations.

On the back end, boundary-corner-turned-safety DJ Jester and M.J. Graham “quarterback” the coverages. Corners Rayshawn Reynolds Jr. and Earl Parker had strong springs; MJ Harrell swings between field corner and nickel; transfer Da'Mun Allen is in the boundary mix; Johnathan Boyd and Bryce Summerall give nickel length and explosiveness. “We’re roughly three-deep across five DB spots,” Wallerstedt said.

The emphasis now is emotional control. “We’ve got better chemistry and leadership,” he said. “Last year, when things wobbled, it could snowball. A guy like DJ Jester has flipped, now he’s the one steadying the group. The test is simple: if we get scored on the first drive, do we play 60 level-headed minutes?”

Dallas called hidden-yardage “a big reason we won tight games” last year, and co-Special Teams Coordinator Andy Krause expects that to remain a weekly advantage even with new specialists.

Placekicker Alejandro De La Poza (Mallorca, Spain/Sunrise Christian) brings accuracy, height and upside. The punting room is headlined by Denzel Moore, “NFL-looking hang and turnover; he can punt with either foot,” Krause said, with Max Flowers and Sam Rayborn providing depth as Rayborn plays into shape. Long snapper is an open competition between veteran Dalton Rokey and freshman Austin Cornett; Krause praised Rokey’s accuracy and Cornett’s speed and physicality.

In the return game, Gouldsby remains the focal point. “We coach special teams like offense and defense,” Krause said. “Field position and momentum, we want that advantage every week.”

Dallas is in Year 6 as head coach and credits administrative support and community buy-in for the program’s stability. “Our families love Hutchinson,” he said. “Consistency with the staff makes everything run more efficiently and trickles down to the players.”

Wallerstedt said an intact defensive staff accelerated the spring install. “Last year everyone was swimming,” he said. “This year, coaches and veterans taught it together. It’s been smooth.”

Koehling echoed the fit. “Coach Dallas recruited me here,” he said. “We see the game the same way. It’s a good place to work, and a good place for players to grow.”

No new uniforms for the Blue Dragons in 2025, but “same look, maybe new combos,” Dallas said. The program’s core remains unchanged: play fast, be clean, lean on depth and win the field-position battle.

“Just another opportunity to showcase who we want to be,” Dallas said. “We’ll adjust to what we see and let our experience show up in the critical moments.”

Henson has paired his pass-rush with improved run fits; Jeffrey Manns II can play both three-tech and nose; TaVeon Robinson has matured from raw to explosive; newcomers Jacob Griffin and Elijah Jackson add heft. “They’ve grown up,” Wallerstedt said. “We can line-change up front and still affect the passer.”Linebacker is deeper than last fall. Brady Whitman and freshman Jack Sells are battling at Mike; Tyler Lassiter (Garden City transfer) brings throwback physicality as he returns from a foot issue; Teegan Haines (McPherson HS, Garden City CC), Chris Robinson (Oklahoma State) and Amir Hill (moved down from safety) round out a long, athletic room. “We’ll grade and rotate,” Wallerstedt said, noting last year’s successful week-to-week combinations.On the back end, boundary-corner-turned-safety DJ Jester and M.J. Graham “quarterback” the coverages. Corners Rayshawn Reynolds Jr. and Earl Parker had strong springs; MJ Harrell swings between field corner and nickel; transfer Da'Mun Allen is in the boundary mix; Johnathan Boyd and Bryce Summerall give nickel length and explosiveness. “We’re roughly three-deep across five DB spots,” Wallerstedt said.The emphasis now is emotional control. “We’ve got better chemistry and leadership,” he said. “Last year, when things wobbled, it could snowball. A guy like DJ Jester has flipped, now he’s the one steadying the group. The test is simple: if we get scored on the first drive, do we play 60 level-headed minutes?”Dallas called hidden-yardage “a big reason we won tight games” last year, and co-Special Teams Coordinator Andy Krause expects that to remain a weekly advantage even with new specialists.Placekicker Alejandro De La Poza (Mallorca, Spain/Sunrise Christian) brings accuracy, height and upside. The punting room is headlined by Denzel Moore, “NFL-looking hang and turnover; he can punt with either foot,” Krause said, with Max Flowers and Sam Rayborn providing depth as Rayborn plays into shape. Long snapper is an open competition between veteran Dalton Rokey and freshman Austin Cornett; Krause praised Rokey’s accuracy and Cornett’s speed and physicality.In the return game, Gouldsby remains the focal point. “We coach special teams like offense and defense,” Krause said. “Field position and momentum, we want that advantage every week.”Dallas is in Year 6 as head coach and credits administrative support and community buy-in for the program’s stability. “Our families love Hutchinson,” he said. “Consistency with the staff makes everything run more efficiently and trickles down to the players.”Wallerstedt said an intact defensive staff accelerated the spring install. “Last year everyone was swimming,” he said. “This year, coaches and veterans taught it together. It’s been smooth.”Koehling echoed the fit. “Coach Dallas recruited me here,” he said. “We see the game the same way. It’s a good place to work, and a good place for players to grow.”No new uniforms for the Blue Dragons in 2025, but “same look, maybe new combos,” Dallas said. The program’s core remains unchanged: play fast, be clean, lean on depth and win the field-position battle.“Just another opportunity to showcase who we want to be,” Dallas said. “We’ll adjust to what we see and let our experience show up in the critical moments.”

Motorcyclists and community members alike will hit the road Saturday, Sept. 13, for a poker run benefitting the Reno County Veterans Memorial.

The ride begins at Salty Cycles, 129 East Sherman, with registration opening at 9:30 a.m. and kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. Riders will make a clockwise loop through the region, stopping at Shep Chevrolet in Haven, Bob’s Bikes in Sterling, Shane Love Insurance in Arlington, and the Reno County Veteran's Memorial before concluding at Bretz Injury Law Office in Hutchinson.

The cost is $25 per hand or $50 for three hands, with all proceeds going directly to the Veterans Memorial’s upkeep and programming. The final stop will feature a free lunch, raffles, and door prizes.

“This community has really blessed us, and it’s an honor to give back through events like this,” said attorney Matt Bretz, who is helping sponsor the event. “The Veterans Memorial is something truly special here in Reno County, but it’s expensive to maintain. Every dollar raised helps ensure it remains a place of honor and reflection.”

Organizers expect more than 150 motorcycles to participate this year, continuing a tradition of biker-led fundraisers in Reno County.

Bretz tells us, "Motorcyclists really show up for things, whether it's for kids that are victims of sexual abuse or violence. They show up at the courthouse to provide some protection and comfort and security, or whether it's fundraisers, whether it's the toy run, whether it's Cancer Council, Veterans Memorial, motorcyclists show up, and I so appreciate that."

Participants don’t need a motorcycle to take part. Classic cars, autocycle riders, and community members who simply want to donate are welcome.

The Veterans Memorial, located off K-96, has become a landmark for locals and visitors alike. Organizers encourage families with loved ones who served to contact the memorial committee about recognition opportunities.

The Sept. 13 run comes ahead of other motorcycle charity rides this fall, including a rescheduled benefit for the Cancer Council of Reno County and upcoming toy runs in December.

 </figure>STEVE HARMON Hutch Post ContributorToday's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 200 block of East Sherman on the south side.In June of 1873, Hutchinson citizens voted for bonds of $15,000 to build the first public school house. E.L. Meyers sold the bonds in St. Louis.Built in the fall of 1873, the first Sherman School opened April 14, 1874, at 227 E. Sherman. The first photo shows that school and children in 1876. It faced Maple Street with all ages studying together.<figure>

 </figure>In 1915, the original Sherman building was razed and replaced with a much larger structure, now addressed as 221 E. Sherman. This building cost $70,000 to construct. The fourth photo shows this Sherman School about 1920 when it became a junior high school and before another annex was added in 1925.<figure>
