HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a successful debut season in 2024, Salt City Racing is returning to the Hutchinson Fairgrounds with an expanded 2025 schedule, new series, and renewed community enthusiasm.

Track promoter Phil Nightingale said lessons learned during the inaugural season have paved the way for a smoother and more exciting year two.

“We learned a lot about running a racetrack,” Nightingale said in a BW Morning Show Interview. “The crowd, the drivers—everyone had great enthusiasm. And now that we’ve got a three-year contract with the Fair Board, we’re in it for the long haul.”

Last year’s highlight was the Silver Crown race in July. Despite skepticism, Nightingale and his team successfully hosted the track’s first 100-lap race in more than a century, proving the updated track surface could go the distance—and then some.

“We could’ve gone 150 laps,” he said. “That’s how good the track was.”

Credit for the improved surface goes to Mike, a track specialist out of Iowa with experience prepping NASCAR’s dirt event at Bristol Motor Speedway. He spent three days reshaping the Hutchinson track last season—no new dirt, just new angles and better preparation.

This year, more improvements are coming. Nine new wall panels will be installed before the April opener and the pit entrance is moving from the east side to the west for better flow.

Joining Nightingale again this year is Nick Baalman, who co-manages the operation and brings decades of racing experience to the table.

“I’ve raced my whole life, but I had no idea what goes into putting on just one race night,” Baalman said. “It’s a massive behind-the-scenes effort. But the support from the community here has been incredible.”

Baalman, who helped launch Mel Hambelton Racing seven years ago, praised the collaboration between the dealership, racing division, and Salt City Racing. He said the enthusiasm from sponsors this year is stronger now that a long-term agreement is in place.

Salt City’s season kicks off April 25 with the Heartland Modified Touring Series, one of the fastest-growing modified divisions in the region. That race will also feature the United Rebel Sprint Series, setting the tone for a thrilling season.

“We’re expecting 40 cars, maybe more,” Nightingale said. “It’s going to be a great show.”

Drivers are anticipated from across Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado, emphasizing the event’s regional draw.

Fans can also look forward to additional major events, including:

Salt City Racing will continue streaming races in 2025, primarily through RacingDirt, while ASCS and Silver Crown events will be broadcast on DirtVision and FloRacing, respectively.

For Nightingale, the secret to success is teamwork.

“Nick and I share everything—responsibilities, ideas, frustrations. You can’t run this kind of thing alone,” he said. “I couldn’t do it without him.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jeremiah Harmon, welding instructor at Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy, has been named the Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Teacher of the Month for April.

Harmon was surprised with the award Monday afternoon and honored with a gift basket, as well as a pizza and ice cream party. The award was presented by Don Glaspie and Cris Schul from Allen Samuels and Ashley Weve with EAGLE Media.

He was nominated by substitute teacher Michele Hansen, who praised the environment Harmon has created in his classroom.

“As a sub, I appreciate a class that has high expectations and love from the teacher,” Hansen said. “The students treat me with so much respect, kindness and appreciation I just have to sub in his class. I do not have to monitor, discipline or deal with any negative behaviors because Mr. Harmon has modeled to the students how one should behave, perform and follow through.”

Harmon credited his students for the honor.

“This isn’t a me, this is a we,” Harmon said. “All I did was create an opportunity for them to impress somebody, and they did. It was a substitute who noticed their behavior and put in for the award. That says a lot about them.”

Harmon’s welding class operates with a strong emphasis on career readiness. Students work at their own pace with individual assignment sheets and receive immediate, hands-on feedback in the lab.

“I treat it like we’re at work,” Harmon said. “Class starts at 8, so I’m ready at 8. The students are expected to be, too. It’s about preparing them for the real world.”

Originally from West Virginia, Harmon said he learned welding out of necessity. After serving in the Army as a machinist, he moved to California and worked in the welding trade. A shortage of skilled labor on a major bridge project in the Bay Area made a lasting impression.

“When I saw a major bridge project needing Canadian welders because we didn’t have enough here, it hit me: if we’re short on skilled workers, we need teachers,” Harmon said. “That’s when I knew I wanted to teach.”

Now in his 15th year of teaching, Harmon said he continues to be inspired by his students’ potential.

“One of you could be welding in outer space,” Harmon told his class. “And who says it can’t be you?”

Jeremiah Harmon is Allen Samuels Teacher of the Month for April

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School softball team was swept by the Campus Colts on Tuesday afternoon at Fun Valley.&nbsp;

The Salthawks fall to 3-13 on the season and will play at Salina South on Friday. The Colts improve to 6-6 on the year.

Game 1 — Campus 19, Hutchinson 3

Campus scored 11 runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 19-3 win over Hutchinson.

The Colts opened the game with a scoring barrage that included a run-scoring single from Kyra Caudillo, a three-run double by Brooke Burling, and RBI singles from Ava Strohm, Lillian Clements, Alexis Butler and Caudillo.

Addison Coupe started in the circle for Hutchinson and allowed seven hits and eight runs—only two of them earned—over one inning. She struck out one and walked three.

Caudillo and Butler each collected two hits to lead Haysville Campus, while Burling finished with a game-high three RBIs, going 1-for-1 at the plate.

Hutchinson fell to Haysville Campus 5-1 on Tuesday in the second game of the doubleheader.

Haysville Campus took an early lead in the second inning on a run-scoring double by Brooke Pfeiffer. Hutchinson answered in the bottom half of the frame when Annalee Eckhoff singled to center to tie the game at 1-1.

The Colts reclaimed the lead in the third on an RBI double by Alexis Butler and added insurance in the fifth with a solo home run to left by Emerleigh Cooper.

Kohlbie Craft pitched a complete game for Hutchinson, allowing 10 hits and five runs—four earned—while striking out four and walking one. Brooke Burling earned the win for Haysville Campus, giving up four hits and one run over seven innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

Eckhoff drove in the Salthawks’ lone run and finished 1-for-3. Jaden Durant went 2-for-3 to lead Hutchinson in hits, and the defense turned one double play.

Kindergarten readiness is top of mind this week as Hutchinson Public Schools prepares to host meet and greet events for incoming students and their families.

On Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m., Ferris Graber, Wiley, Morgan and Lincoln-McCandless elementary schools will welcome families for a special kindergarten event. Allen Elementary, a STEM-focused magnet school, will host its meet and greet Thursday during the same time.

The events are designed to introduce children and families to their new schools and staff in a welcoming, low-pressure environment.

“This is really just a fun opportunity to meet the teachers, principals and other families,” said Stacy Goss USD 308 Director of Communications. “You don’t need to bring any paperwork—it’s just a chance to connect.”

All children who turn 5 on or before Aug. 31 are eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall. For younger children, the district offers the Little Hawks program, which serves children from birth through age 5.

Thanks to the Myrna B. Weeks Donor Advised Fund through the Hutchinson Community Foundation, the district will distribute welcome gifts to approximately 265 incoming kindergarteners. Each gift includes basic school supplies, Play-Doh, and a 100-page summer skills workbook focused on letter recognition, coloring, tracing, fine motor skills and more.

“These are all the things that educators and the state of Kansas say students need to be practicing over the summer,” said Goss. “Some students already know these skills, and some don’t—but we’ll meet them where they are.”

Kindergarten readiness continues to be a key focus for the district, as research shows strong early learning experiences set the tone for long-term academic success. Studies have shown a positive correlation between attending preschool and third-grade math and reading scores.

“We’re deeply invested in early childhood education,” Goss added. “When families are also invested, it helps children enter kindergarten emotionally, socially, physically and academically prepared.”

In addition to in-district support, families are encouraged to take advantage of resources like the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides free books to young children.

The district also hinted at broader changes in how kindergarten might be introduced next year, reflecting the evolving needs of incoming students.

“We’re exploring what I’d call a ‘course correction’ in how we begin kindergarten,” Dr. Dawn Johnson, USD 308 Superintendent. “Students today come to us differently than they did 20 years ago. It’s about crawling and walking with them before we expect them to run.”

A significant item on the agenda is a proposed overhaul of the state basketball format. Under the plan, quarterfinal games would be played at neutral sites on Tuesday or Wednesday of championship week, followed by semifinal matchups on Friday and state title games on Saturday. The semifinals and finals would be hosted at traditional, more prestigious state venues. The new model would group two classifications at each of three final four sites, while one class would remain solo. Consolation games would take place either Friday or Saturday morning. The KSHSAA staff developed the proposal in response to member school feedback seeking a more unified and prestigious state tournament experience.

Also up for discussion is the future use of a shot clock in high school basketball. Following a year of experimental use and survey data collection, KSHSAA staff are recommending a phased rollout of mandatory shot clocks during postseason play. The proposal includes:

KSHSAA Executive Board to consider new state basketball format, phased shot clock mandate

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As orange cones and construction signs begin to dot the highways and byways of Kansas this spring, officials are urging motorists to slow down and stay alert during National Work Zone Awareness Week.

Nick Gosnell, spokesperson for the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) District 5, which covers much of south-central Kansas, emphasized that work zone safety is not just about protecting construction workers — it's about saving drivers’ lives.

“In 2024, Kansas saw eight people killed and more than 500 injured in work zone crashes,” Gosnell said during a recent interview. “And around 90% of those injured were motorists, not workers.”

According to state data, Kansas averaged 4.6 work zone crashes per day in 2024, totaling more than 1,700 incidents. While about three-quarters of those were limited to property damage, Gosnell said any crash has the potential to seriously impact lives.

“It’s a rite of spring in Kansas — you change your clocks, and the orange barrels show up,” Gosnell said. “The point is to remind drivers that if they see those signs or cones, it’s time to take an extra few seconds, look ahead, and be prepared.”

Among the major projects in Gosnell’s district is the “Gold Project,” which aims to overhaul the interchange of K-96, I-135 and I-235 near Wichita. Once complete, the redesign will resemble the seamless transitions found in suburban Kansas City.

“It's on schedule, though the spring rains are a double-edged sword — good for crops, not so much for construction,” Gosnell said.

Other work includes resurfacing U.S. 50 west of Hutchinson and bridge improvements near the Reno and Harvey County line.

For drivers wanting real-time updates, Gosnell recommends the KanDrive app or visiting <a href="http://www.kandrive.gov">www.kandrive.gov</a>, which provides current road conditions and construction alerts across Kansas.

In addition to following posted speed limits — which often come with doubled fines in work zones — Gosnell stressed the importance of giving workers space.

“They’re working just feet from you — closer than you and I sitting across a table,” he said.

Drivers may also encounter pilot cars guiding them through single-lane areas. According to Gosnell, KDOT aims to keep wait times to 15 minutes or less during such operations.

Gosnell also highlighted updates to Kansas’ Move Over Law, which now requires drivers to change lanes or slow down for any vehicle stopped on the roadside, not just emergency responders.

Western Kansans often voice frustration about long detour routes, but Gosnell explained that those decisions are based on bridge capacity and safety standards for heavy truck traffic.

“The only bridges we can guarantee will handle that load are those on state highways,” he said. “We’re not trying to inconvenience anyone — we want everyone, including our workers, to get home safely.”

As construction season ramps up, Gosnell and other KDOT officials hope National Work Zone Awareness Week serves as a reminder that everyone plays a role in road safety.

 </figure>According to state data, Kansas averaged 4.6 work zone crashes per day in 2024, totaling more than 1,700 incidents. While about three-quarters of those were limited to property damage, Gosnell said any crash has the potential to seriously impact lives.“It’s a rite of spring in Kansas — you change your clocks, and the orange barrels show up,” Gosnell said. “The point is to remind drivers that if they see those signs or cones, it’s time to take an extra few seconds, look ahead, and be prepared.”<h2>Big Projects, Bigger Impacts</h2>Among the major projects in Gosnell’s district is the “Gold Project,” which aims to overhaul the interchange of K-96, I-135 and I-235 near Wichita. Hutchinson resident, Louis Pegon, is competing in the 129th Boston Marathon on Monday morning. Pegon, 33, has French citizenship, but currently resides in Hutchinson.

He will be wearing red bib number 1912 and will be in the first wave going off at 9 a.m. CT Monday morning. The race will be televised on ESPN2.

There are a total of 69 entries from the state of Kansas that are competing in the Boston Marathon.&nbsp;

The race begins in Hopkinton, Mass. and ends on Boylston Street in Boston.

The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon. The inaugural event was held in 1897 with just 15 participants competing. The race has grown in popularity with runners from all over the world in the event. There are a total of 32,080 entries in this year's race, which tops last year's 29,685 entries.

SEDGWICK, Kan.&nbsp; — A Sedgwick woman has been arrested in connection with an attempted aggravated kidnapping that occurred the evening of April 15, authorities said.

According to the Sedgwick Police Department, officers responded to reports that a woman had attempted to forcibly remove a child from a practice field located at 400 W. 4th St. at approximately 6:40 p.m. Witnesses said the woman stated her intent to take the child from the school property. Two supervising adults intervened and were able to separate the woman from the child.

The incident was reported to law enforcement on April 16. Following an investigation and consultation with the Harvey County Attorney’s Office, a 37-year-old Sedgwick resident was taken into custody and formally charged with attempted aggravated kidnapping, a felony.

The suspect is currently being held at the Harvey County Detention Center and is awaiting an initial court appearance.

To protect the privacy of the child and the integrity of the investigation, no further details about the victim have been released.

“We take these incidents extremely seriously, and I want to commend Officer Harmon for his diligent investigation,” said Sedgwick Police Chief Bryan L Hall. “Our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of every member of this community.”

Hutchinson, McPherson battle deep field at Newton Invitational

NEWTON, Kan. — Hutchinson and McPherson faced off against a large and competitive field Thursday at the Newton Invitational held at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

Maize South took home top team honors with a score of 322, led by Colten Hoover’s 78. Bishop Carroll finished second at 327, and Valley Center was third with a 339. Hutchinson placed 10th with a team total of 369, while McPherson followed in 12th at 372.

Hutchinson was paced by Mitchell Rice, who carded an 84 to tie for 14th individually. Landyn Powell added a 93, followed by Alex Haas and Maks Dreiling with matching 96s. Tate England rounded out the scoring for the Salthawks with a 112, and Chris Evans shot 122.

McPherson’s top finisher was Cole Cooper, who turned in a 90. Kamerson Buckbee and Teigan Younger each shot 93 and 94, respectively. Lawson Ediger and Hudson Krehbiel both finished at 95, while Zane Sporleder and Paxton Ingels contributed rounds of 97 and 98.

Garden City’s Maddix Shook earned medalist honors with a 74, two strokes ahead of Max Farber from Bishop Carroll.

Hesston takes 4th, Buhler ties for 9th at Wichita Collegiate Invitational

WICHITA, Kan. — Hesston placed fourth and Buhler tied for 10th at the Wichita Collegiate School Invitational boys golf tournament Thursday at Tallgrass Country Club.

Andover claimed the team title with a 319, followed by Wichita Collegiate (323) and Andover Central and Hesston (327 each). Buhler posted a 354 to tie Augusta for 10th in the 12-team field.

Carter Frey and Grant Waterson led the way for Hesston, each carding an 81 to finish tied for 10th individually. Teammates Austin Penner and Eli Frantz followed closely with rounds of 82 and 83, respectively, while Ty Unruh added a 91 and Eli Roth shot a 92.

Buhler was paced by Drew DeMeyer, who tied for 13th with an 82. Zach Chance added an 85, Brennan Geilenfeldt posted a 92, Jace Heimerman finished at 95, Brayden Adams shot 97, and Isaiah Heredia rounded out the scoring with a 113.

Andover’s Seth Benjamin and Andover Central’s Xayden Garcia shared medalist honors with rounds of 74.

LINDSBORG, Kan. — Athletes from across central Kansas delivered standout performances Thursday at the Smoky Valley Invitational held at Bethany College, with several local schools making their mark in individual and relay events, on a day that saw wind gusts north of 40 miles per hour.

McPherson’s Matt Burger won the boys 100-meter dash in 11.16 seconds and narrowly missed a double win, taking second in the 200-meter dash (23.46). The Bullpups also took second in the boys 4x100 relay and won the girls 4x800 relay (10:27.97), led by Lexi Patterson, who also won the girls 3200 meters in 12:24.48.

Trinity Catholic’s Isaac Hammersmith stood out by finishing runner-up in the 100 (11.30), placing seventh in the 200, and winning the high jump with a leap of 6-8. He also claimed the long jump title with a mark of 22 feet, 0.5 inches. Trinity’s boys 4x400 relay team placed fourth (3:37.01), and John Lindstrom placed second in the 3200 and third in the 1600.

Buhler’s Lillie Ledford dominated on the girls side, winning the 400 (59.46) and finishing second in the 200 and third in the 100. The Crusaders won the girls 4x400 relay (4:16.20) and placed third in the 4x100.
