McPHERSON, Kan. — Wichita Collegiate claimed the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division 3 &amp; 4 boys tennis championship on Monday at McPherson High School, finishing with 61 points to secure the team title.

Buhler placed second with 43 points, followed closely by Winfield (41) and host McPherson (40). El Dorado finished fifth with 22, followed by Wellington (19), Circle (16), and Augusta (10).

Up next is regional play on Friday. Buhler will host a regional site that includes Augusta, El Dorado, Hesston, Towanda-Circle, Wellington and Winfield. McPherson will travel to the Scott City regional alongside Abilene, Colby, Concordia, Pratt, Ulysses and host Scott City.

Buhler’s Von Woleslagel led area competitors with a fourth-place finish. He fell in the third-place match to Collegiate’s Vihaan Ganganala, 6-2, 6-4, after dropping his semifinal match to eventual champion William Farha of Collegiate, 6-0, 6-1. Farha went on to defeat Jackson Davis of Winfield in the final, 6-1, 6-3.

🎾 Buhler 2nd, McPherson 4th at AVCTL D3 & D4 championship

McPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson High School senior Gabe Pyle has been named the 2025 Mr. Kansas Basketball by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, becoming the third member of his family to earn the state’s top boys basketball honor.

Pyle joins older brothers Drew (2016) and Ben (2018) as recipients of the award. Drew went on to play at Washburn University, while Ben competed at Western Illinois, San Diego and later McPherson College.

A standout senior, Pyle helped lead the Bullpups to their 15th boys state championship in program history this March in Salina. He hit buzzer-beating, game-winning shots in both the quarterfinals and semifinals before McPherson defeated Rock Creek 53-44 in the Class 4A title game.

The victory secured back-to-back state titles for the Bullpups, who went a combined 46-4 over the past two seasons. Pyle finished his career with 1,186 points, ranking sixth all-time in program history. He also tallied 190 career steals, the second-most in school history.

The Pyle family has been deeply woven into McPherson basketball for generations. Gabe’s grandfather, Tom Pyle, was an all-state selection for the Bullpups in the 1960s before playing at Iowa State. His parents, David and Deedra, both played at McPherson in the early 1990s, with David helping the Bullpups to back-to-back Class 5A titles.

His sister, Grace, also made her mark on the court. A former Bullpup standout, she helped lead Pittsburg State to the NCAA Division II national semifinals this season.

In recent years, the family’s presence on the roster has remained strong. Gabe played this season alongside his cousin, Jett Pyle, a junior. Last year, Jett’s older brother, Owen, was part of McPherson’s undefeated title team, giving the Bullpups a trio of Pyles on the floor.

Pyle, who graduates May 17, committed to Hutchinson Community College on April 15 and will join Kyle Fisher’s 2025-26 Blue Dragons. He is also slated to play for the Gold Team in the KBCA All-Star Game on June 21 in Salina.

🏀 McPherson senior and HutchCC commit Gabe Pyle named Mr. Kansas Basketball

Art lovers, shoppers, and families alike will have plenty to celebrate this weekend as the Hutchinson Art Center prepares for its annual Art Fair, set for Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sunflower South Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The event, held the day before Mother’s Day, promises more than 50 artist booths, live music, kids’ activities, and even a raffle featuring original works by acclaimed local artists Jack Stout and Mary Welch.

“This is such a great opportunity for people to find unique gifts—whether it’s for a loved one or themselves,” said Barbara Withrow of the Hutchinson Art Center. “We’ve got pottery, mosaics, fiber art, metalwork, jewelry, and so much more. The range of prices makes it accessible to everyone.”

Withrow, a longtime organizer of the event, noted that all 50 artist spaces have already been filled, with a waiting list for additional vendors. “It’s wonderful to see this level of enthusiasm,” she said. “We even had to turn someone away this week because we were already at capacity.”

Joining Withrow is Emily Kohls, the new Executive Director of the Hutchinson Art Center, who is already embracing the local art community after stepping into her role earlier this spring.

“I remember attending this fair back when I was a student at Hutchinson Community College,” said Kohls. “It’s amazing to now be a part of organizing such a meaningful event for the community.”

The art fair, which was once held outdoors near Main Street, moved to the fairgrounds years ago to provide a more weatherproof and accessible venue for artists and attendees. The Sunflower South Building offers ample parking and easy load-in for artists, along with space for musical performances and seating.

Three musical groups are scheduled to perform throughout the day, and children can enjoy free goodie bags—including a bit of Play-Doh, which, organizers noted, has become a hit with both kids and parents. “It’s great to see parents playing right alongside their kids,” said Withrow.

This year’s fair also highlights a special art raffle, giving attendees a chance to win original works from well-known regional artists. Raffle tickets will be available at the entrance, and winners do not need to be present to claim their prize.

Alongside the Art Fair, the Hutchinson Art Center continues to host multiple exhibitions, including Visible Voices: Art Beyond the Struggle, a mental health-themed showcase created in partnership with Milestone Clubhouse. The exhibit, which runs through May 16, includes artwork from local residents exploring mental illness and the therapeutic role of creativity.

“The stories behind the pieces are just as powerful as the works themselves,” said Kohls. “It’s important to show how art can help build mental wellness.”

Organizers hope the community will mark their calendars for Saturday’s event and take advantage of the diverse offerings. “Whether you’re looking for a last-minute Mother’s Day gift or just want to support local artists, this is the place to be,” said Withrow.

As mailboxes across Reno County prepare for more than just letters and bills this Saturday, local letter carriers are once again rallying to “Stamp Out Hunger,” the nation’s largest single-day food drive, spearheaded by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC).

Josh Estrella, a longtime letter carrier in Hutchinson, has been participating in the drive since he joined the U.S. Postal Service in 2006. He said the local carriers are aiming to collect more than 20,000 pounds of food this year — a milestone not reached since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is something we do for the community that’s incredibly meaningful,” Estrella said. “We’ve been doing this nationally since 1993, and since then, letter carriers have collected over 1 billion pounds of food across the country.”

The effort is simple, but impactful: residents are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items near their mailboxes on Saturday, May 10. Letter carriers will collect the donations during their normal delivery routes and deliver them to the Reno County Food Bank.

“It may slow us down a bit that day, but it’s worth it,” Estrella said. “We even have retired carriers come out to help. It’s a team effort, and a community effort.”

Donations of canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, cereal and boxed meals like macaroni and cheese are especially appreciated. Residents are asked not to donate items in glass containers, as they often break during transport.

“If you’re going shopping this week, grab a few extra items,” Estrella said. “That way you’re not pulling from your pantry — and you avoid donating anything expired.”

Those who might be out of town on Saturday can set out donations earlier in the week. Plastic donation bags and reminder postcards are being delivered beginning Tuesday.

The drive also accepts monetary donations. Checks should be made out to the Reno County Food Bank and placed in a clearly labeled envelope inside the mailbox — no stamp needed. Cash donations should follow the same process.

“Every item we collect stays right here in Reno County,” Estrella said. “This is a way for every resident to give back and help local families facing food insecurity.”

Last year, Hutchinson carriers collected just over 18,800 pounds of food. Route 26 — covering the city’s west side — took home bragging rights for the most collected. Estrella said there’s a friendly rivalry among routes, with carriers even weighing their loads at the dock to keep track.

“Once the trucks start backing up and the doors open, seeing all that food pour out is such a good feeling,” Estrella said.

Processing the food is an all-hands-on-deck operation. The Reno County Food Bank sends a crew to the post office Saturday afternoon, where volunteers and carriers sort, weigh, and load items into delivery trucks for distribution.

“From kids to retirees, Scouts to church groups, it takes the whole community,” Estrella said. “We just hope folks continue that generosity this year.”

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive takes place nationwide on Saturday, May 10. Residents are encouraged to leave their donations outside early in the day to ensure pickup.

After a week of final touches and preparation, the Jay and Connie Schrock Family Early Education School celebrated a major milestone on Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Staff members spent the week cleaning, organizing and transforming classrooms ahead of the center's first licensing inspection, which was successfully completed. Ms. Brooke led the cleaning efforts, while Ms. Jodie and Ms. Elise redesigned the toddler room. Ms. Emily created a new, cozy space for infants.

The event marked a significant step forward for the early education program, which aims to serve local families and support young learners in a nurturing, well-equipped environment.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School baseball coach Mace Krol earned bragging rights in the first-ever Krol Series on Friday at Hobart-Detter Field, as the Salthawks picked up a pair of wins over teams coached by his brothers — Adam, head coach at Andale/Garden Plain, and Noah, head coach at Haven.

With the two wins, the Salthawks improve their record to 12-9 on the season. They will host Newton on Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field.&nbsp;

With the split for Haven, the Wildcats are now 15-7, and will travel to Hesston next Friday. The two losses drop Andale/Garden Plain to 10-10, and they will play at Buhler on Monday.

Game 1 — Hutchinson 3, Andale/Garden Plain 1

Jack Davis delivered a complete-game gem on Friday, leading the Hutchinson Salthawks to a 3-1 win over Andale/Garden Plain (10-9) in the opening game of the Krol Series.

The win marked Davis’ second complete game of the season and improved his record to 4-1. The right-hander allowed just three hits and one unearned run over seven innings, striking out four and walking two.

Andale/Garden Plain took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Brody Winter drew a bases-loaded walk. Hutchinson quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly from Caiden Beavers to even the score.

The Salthawks broke the tie in the sixth when GeVaugn Embers came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit sacrifice fly. An error later in the inning added an insurance run for a 3-1 lead.

Beavers, Embers, Jack Yoder, Carter Morgan, and JuJu Lyons each had one hit for Hutchinson. Beavers and Embers also drove in runs. Defensively, the Salthawks turned three double plays.

Caden Fowler took the loss for Andale/Garden Plain, allowing three runs — only one earned — on four hits over five innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

Noah Stanley, Austin Bugner and Jared Flax each had one hit for the Indians, while Winter drove in the team’s lone run.

Game 2 — Haven&nbsp;7, Andale/Garden Plain 2

Haven rallied in the seventh inning to stun Andale/Garden Plain 7-2 on Friday, scoring six runs in the final frame to cap a come-from-behind win.

Andale/Garden Plain opened the scoring in the third inning on a fielder’s choice by Noah Stanley. The lead held until the sixth, when Jaxson Wilder’s RBI single down the right field line tied the game for the Wildcats.

In the bottom of the sixth, Austin Bugner singled home a run to give Andale/Garden Plain a brief 2-1 advantage.

But Haven erupted in the top of the seventh, collecting five hits and scoring six runs to flip the game. The biggest blow came from Chandler Ingold, who ripped a three-run triple to right-center to put the Wildcats in control.

Ingold also earned the win on the mound, throwing a complete game. He allowed just four hits and two unearned runs while striking out three and walking four over seven innings.

Patrick Keehn took the loss for Andale/Garden Plain, pitching six and one-third innings. He gave up six runs — five earned — on seven hits, striking out five and walking two.

Haven finished with nine hits, led by Ingold and Tanner Loughrie with two apiece. Ingold went 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBIs.

Greyson Winter, Bugner, Easton Linnens and Cruz Kaiser each had one hit for Andale/Garden Plain. Stanley and Bugner drove in one run apiece.

Game 3 — Hutchinson 12, Haven 0 (5 Innings)

Caiden Beavers recorded his sixth three-hit game of the season as Hutchinson rolled past Haven 12-0 in five innings Friday at Hobart-Detter Field.

Beavers went 3-for-4 at the plate, including an inside-the-park home run in the second inning, his first home run of the season. He also singled in the first and doubled in the third, driving in a total of four runs.

The Salthawks erupted for six runs in the first inning, highlighted by Beavers’ two-run single, an RBI double by Cole Bleything, a sacrifice fly from JuJu Lyons, and RBI contributions from Jack Davis and Merrick Brotzman.

In the second, Hutchinson tacked on five more runs despite recording just one hit in the frame. Beavers’ inside-the-park homer brought in two, followed by a hit-by-pitch RBI for Brotzman, a bases-loaded walk to Oak Williams, and a sacrifice fly by Carter Morgan.

Lyons capped the scoring in the third with a line-drive single to right.

On the mound, Morgan earned his first complete-game victory, allowing just three hits over five shutout innings. He struck out five and walked two. Wyatt Bontrager took the loss for Haven, giving up six runs on five hits in just one-third of an inning.

Williams led Hutchinson with three walks and two stolen bases. The Salthawks swiped five bags as a team and turned one double play defensively.

Brogan Wray, Chandler Ingold, and Tanner Loughrie each had one hit for Haven.

They will host Newton on Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field.&nbsp;With the split for Haven, the Wildcats are now 15-7, and will travel to Hesston next Friday. The two losses drop Andale/Garden Plain to 10-10, and they will play at Buhler on Monday.Game 1 — Hutchinson 3, Andale/Garden Plain 1Jack Davis delivered a complete-game gem on Friday, leading the Hutchinson Salthawks to a 3-1 win over Andale/Garden Plain (10-9) in the opening game of the Krol Series.The win marked Davis’ second complete game of the season and improved his record to 4-1. The right-hander allowed just three hits and one unearned run over seven innings, striking out four and walking two.Andale/Garden Plain took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Brody Winter drew a bases-loaded walk. ⚾ Krol Series: Hutch High picks up wins over Andale/Garden Plain and Haven

Viewers in Kansas know Asia Cymone Smith as the dynamic weekend sports anchor and sport reporter for KSN News 3. Most often found on the sidelines of football fields or courtside at basketball games, Smith is now making headlines herself, this time, as Miss Kansas USA 2025.

Born and raised in San Diego, Smith has called Wichita home for over two years. Since joining KSN, she’s transitioned from general news into full-time sports, a field where she’s building both her career and a legacy.

“Being on the sidelines has been a dream, but now I have the opportunity to stand on a different kind of stage,” Smith said during a recent interview on the BW Morning Show. “Competing for Miss Kansas USA was a way for me to return to my roots in pageantry and amplify my platform for women in sports broadcasting.”

Smith has been involved in pageantry since age 12, a pursuit she says built her confidence and prepared her for a life in front of the camera. Although she took a break during college, her recent return led to a state crown and a new mission.

“I didn’t compete in a local pageant. I went at-large and chose to represent East Wichita,” she said. “Now, I’ll compete for Miss USA later this year — and if I win that, it’s on to Miss Universe.”

The date and location for Miss USA have yet to be announced, but Smith said preparation is already in full swing. In the meantime, she’s focused on deepening her community engagement through mentorship and service.

Her mentorship initiative, Girls Talk Game, supports women pursuing careers in sports media — a field where women remain underrepresented, particularly in leadership roles. Smith hopes to change that.

“I want to be the mentor I didn’t always have,” she said. “A lot of girls don’t know where to start. I want to give them that starting point — to show them they belong.”

Smith brings more than encouragement — she brings experience. A former competitive cheerleader and track athlete, she ran collegiately at San Diego State and the University of Florida, where she earned her master’s degree and was part of an NCAA championship-winning team.

Beyond broadcasting, Smith is currently writing a children’s book titled There’s No One Like Me, inspired by her mother, who developed vitiligo more than a decade ago. The story aims to teach kids about diversity, acceptance, and the beauty in being different.

“She struggled with how people looked at her,” Smith said. “I wanted to create something that helps children understand skin differences and learn not to judge people by appearance.”

In addition to her work at KSN and with Girls Talk Game, Smith also volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters Kansas, serves as a mentor and "big," and is involved with the Miracle League of Wichita, supporting adaptive sports for youth with disabilities.

“Being Miss Kansas USA isn’t just about the crown,” she said. “It’s about using the platform to serve, to uplift, and to represent the people of this state with pride.”

As she prepares for Miss USA and juggles her roles in sports, service, and storytelling, Smith is focused on one mission: making space for others — particularly women — to follow in her footsteps.

“Pageants and sports might seem like opposites,” she said. “But I’m proof you can love both — and succeed in both.”

Wichita’s Asia Cymone Smith Takes on New Title as Miss Kansas USA 2025

A pair of brothers are bringing a way to play golf year-round. &nbsp;Dylan and Drew Mueller are the owners of The Swing Easy, a new indoor golf simulator lounge that aims to bring the experience of year-round golf to the community, regardless of weather or skill level.&nbsp;

“We’d been to a few of these places in bigger cities,” Dylan Mueller said. “There just wasn’t anything like it around here. We thought it’d be fun to have something people could enjoy all year round.”&nbsp;

They are open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday hours haven’t been finalized.&nbsp; The Swing Easy is located at 1616 East Eleventh here in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Using high-tech golf simulators, players can tee off at more than 1,500 digital replicas of real-world courses — from Augusta National to TPC Louisiana. The system captures swing speed, ball trajectory, club path, and more, giving instant feedback to players of all levels.&nbsp;

“You don’t need to be a pro to have fun here,” Dylan said. “Even if you’ve never played before, the simulator gives you feedback so you can see what you're doing and improve.”&nbsp;

While the technology is sophisticated, the atmosphere is laid back and welcoming to all ages. Players can adjust game settings to suit kids or beginners — even turning championship-level courses into easier par-3 layouts.&nbsp;

“You can come in with your kids, change the realism, and just have a great time,” Dylan said. “It’s about making golf more accessible.”&nbsp;

Putting is available but optional, as Dylan&nbsp;admits the short game can be tricky to translate indoors due to depth perception. “You can putt in the simulator — it works great — but it’s definitely the hardest part for people to wrap their heads around.”&nbsp;

The idea for Swing Easy took shape after a friend worked at a similar business in Kansas City and praised the concept. Seeing its potential for Hutch, the brothers took the plunge and opened up shop.&nbsp;

With plans to launch leagues in the fall and winter, Bueller hopes to build a steady year-round clientele — especially during the colder months when hitting the actual green isn’t an option.&nbsp;

“It’s a great way to stay out of the heat or the cold and still play a full 18 holes,” he said. “And it’s just a good time.”&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Betsy Mueller is running more than 3,000 miles across America to prove that life with multiple sclerosis doesn’t have to come to a stop.

Diagnosed in August 2021 with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), Mueller is on a mission to raise awareness for the disease while becoming the first person with MS to run across the United States. She began her journey March 9 in Santa Monica, California, and expects to finish in New York City on June 22, though she's aiming for an earlier finish on June 14.

She will pass through Hutchinson this weekend.

“I'm really excited about Hutchinson,” Mueller said. “I grew up in West Allis, Wisconsin, where the Wisconsin State Fair is, so I love towns with state fairs. They’re just such cool places.”

Her cross-country route spans more than 3,000 miles and climbs a total of 112,745 feet in elevation, a physical and mental test for any runner, let alone someone managing a chronic neurological condition. But for Mueller, the run is not just about mileage. It's about reclaiming her life.

“In 2021 I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and that first six months was really hard,” she said. “When the feeling finally came back on the left side of my face, it gave me hope again — that maybe this disease isn’t in control of me.”

RRMS affects everyone differently. Symptoms can include fatigue, mobility issues, cognitive challenges and sensory disturbances. Mueller’s initial treatment, high-dose steroids, failed to ease her symptoms. Only after undergoing plasma exchange therapy did her condition improve.

 </figure>SEAN BOSTON Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Betsy Mueller is running more than 3,000 miles across America to prove that life with multiple sclerosis doesn’t have to come to a stop.Diagnosed in August 2021 with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), Mueller is on a mission to raise awareness for the disease while becoming the first person with MS to run across the United States. She began her journey March 9 in Santa Monica, California, and expects to finish in New York City on June 22, though she's aiming for an earlier finish on June 14.She will pass through Hutchinson this weekend.“I'm really excited about Hutchinson,” Mueller said. “I grew up in West Allis, Wisconsin, where the Wisconsin State Fair is, so I love towns with state fairs. They’re just such cool places.”Her cross-country route spans more than 3,000 miles and climbs a total of 112,745 feet in elevation, a physical and mental test for any runner, let alone someone managing a chronic neurological condition. But for Mueller, the run is not just about mileage. It's about reclaiming her life.“In 2021 I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and that first six months was really hard,” she said. “When the feeling finally came back on the left side of my face, it gave me hope again — that maybe this disease isn’t in control of me.”<figure>

 </figure>RRMS affects everyone differently. Symptoms can include fatigue, mobility issues, cognitive challenges and sensory disturbances. Mueller’s initial treatment, high-dose steroids, failed to ease her symptoms. Only after undergoing plasma exchange therapy did her condition improve.Even now, she continues to deal with “pseudo flares,” symptoms that mimic true relapses and can be psychologically difficult to navigate.She credits her progress to a strong support system, a plant-based diet and the therapeutic power of running.“I've always enjoyed running,” Mueller said. “Eventually, when we moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, I’d see people running across America and thought, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ I wanted to show people MS isn’t a death sentence, you can still do the things you’ve always dreamed of doing.”Mueller aims to run roughly 30 miles a day, often starting around 6:30 a.m. She is accompanied by rotating support drivers, including family and friends who’ve helped guide her journey across multiple states.“The support has been amazing,” she said. “I’m usually the helper, so at first it was hard to accept help. But now I’ve learned it’s OK. It’s actually been great.”<figure>

 </figure>Mueller has faced intense conditions — from heat in California to snow and hail in New Mexico — but said the mindset shift has been key.“While people are rushing to work or the store, I get to experience nature — even if it’s snowing and hailing,” she said. “It was fun to me.”Her advice to others with MS is to connect with others, and don’t lose hope.“Joining a support group really helped me early on,” she said. “You feel like you're with your people. Everyone’s MS is different, but knowing you’re not alone matters. Life doesn’t have to stop.
