Many people know about the classic children's book "The Little Engine That Could" but what about the "little station" that not only could but still can? Not many things born ninety years ago this month are still alive and kicking. A notable exception is a uniquely thriving Hutchinson AM radio station, KWBW.&nbsp;

Once housed in what is now the Reno County Museum and originally known as KWBG, then in a historic local library building at 5th and Main, followed by a long stint in the once suburbs of 17th and Harding and now in at 9th and Main, KWBW has become a local institution playing primarily to middle age and older adults. An FM component was added in 2013 to expand night-time coverage.&nbsp;

It is highly unusual for a low power radio station to survive nine decades of broadcasting and society ups and downs. Especially in recent decades many stations have sold, disappeared and changed formats.&nbsp;

Although it didn't start with a news/talk and sports format KWBW was a Kansas talk pioneer. It has become one of the communities strongest voices for local events and programs, sports and linked up with an on-line news service, Hutch Post, owned and operated by its' parent, Eagle Media out of Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;

The result has been a sizeable number of local listeners who depend on the station for community information, a chance to voice their own telephone comments weekly, high school and community college sports, local personalities that have become engrained in loyal listeners for generations and linking up with popular national programing such as Clay Travis and Buck Sexton (successors to Rush Limbaugh); conservative Glen Beck and longtime coverage of Kansas City Royals baseball.&nbsp;

KWBW has maintained its success through several innovative practices. These include home-spun, so-called ad-lib commercials by station personalities and remote broadcasts where announcers visit advertisers' businesses to deliver live reports. The station was also one of the first to invite clients in to record their own commercials. Additionally, a long-running show called Party Line allows people to advertise their buy-and-sell items for free over the phone. Together, these strategies have helped KWBW overcome competition and challenges that have caused other stations to go bankrupt or fade away.

Success of the station turning ninety this year and its' ability to grow and proper while others, especially AM stations, have failed may be primarily attributed to four people.&nbsp;

The late Fred Conger bought into the station and moved from Topeka more than a half century ago. Conger was willing to experiment with BW Radios' first talk program called Coffee and Conversation. It was only 15 minutes, originating live from the downtown Baker Hotel, now Plaza Towers apartments, and it featured Conger talking about Hutchinson and with its' interesting people. Conger went on to pioneer Party Line, a daily trade and sale program made famous by Wilma "Perky" Perks. For more than a quarter-century she enticed a huge audience both with sale items and appeals for listeners to help local organizations and needy people. 

Conger also launched a sister FM station, KHUT and later ownership further expanded with KHMY-FM.&nbsp;

Without Congers' willingness to move toward a talk format when most stations were only playing music KWBW might not have made it through broadcast turbulence of the 60's and 70's. He also had the courage to be among the few, initially, to add Rush Limbaugh to BW programing. It became the nations' most popular daily radio show and Conger resisted local efforts from opponents to shut it down.&nbsp;

Another key part of the stations' success was Conger turning over ownership in 1989 to a group called Eagle Communications, headed by Hays radio and television owner Bob Schmidt and his principal operating lieutenant Gary Shorman. Schmidt and Shorman brought in needed new ideas, increased capital and challenged the station to embrace change. 

Worn out equipment was replaced, and a future vision was established. As Schmidt readied for retirement, he put all his stations and cable operations into an employee-owned environment known as ESOP. When cable assets were sold employee stockholders were handsomely rewarded, a huge benefit for long-term workers.&nbsp;

The move in 2007 to a closed but strategically located savings and loan office at 9th and Main put KWBW its sister stations back in the heart of Hutchinson, greatly enhancing visibility and taking the stations out of crowded, uninviting facilities. But without the leadership and vision of Conger, Perks, Schmidt and Sharman much, perhaps very little, of what the "little station that could" has accomplished would been possible.&nbsp;

KWBW celebrates 90 years of local radio in Hutchinson

Day 1 of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) boys golf state championships are in the books on a cool, damp and windy day at six different sites.

Hutchinson Central Christian holds a narrow lead after the opening round of the Class 1A boys golf state championship at Mariah Hills Golf Course, positioning itself for a run at the program’s second state title.

The Cougars posted a team score of 318 on Tuesday, two shots ahead of Elkhart (320) and five clear of third-place South Gray (323) heading into Wednesday’s final round.

Senior Ryland Kooiman paced Central Christian with a 2-over-par 73, placing him fifth individually. His younger brother, sophomore Cael Kooiman, is eighth after carding a 77. Senior Nathan Reed shot 82 to tie for 11th, while sophomore Tyler Reed added an 86 to round out the team scoring.

Sophomore Tarren Scripsick (116) and senior Brody Froese (118) also competed for Central Christian.

In Class 2A,&nbsp;Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic sits in seventh place held Tuesday at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.

The Celtics carded a team score of 340, paced by sophomore Miles Blaylock, who fired an 81 to tie for 22nd overall. Sophomore Tyler Casebolt followed closely with an 82, while senior Lincoln Barnes added an 84.&nbsp;

Syracuse leads the team standings after a strong collective effort, posting a 301 behind four golfers in the top 10. Salina Sacred Heart sits in second with a 311, and Hoxie is third at 322.

In Class 3A,&nbsp;Hesston senior Grant Waterson fired a 1-under-par 71 to sit in second place after Tuesday’s opening round at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course.

Waterson trails Wichita-Collegiate freshman Landon Langston, who leads the field with an even-par 70 heading into Wednesday’s final round.

Hesston sophomore Austin Penner posted an 82 and sits in a tie for 28th. The Swathers did not field a full team, but Waterson remains in strong contention for the individual state title.

Kingman senior Kory Meireis also delivered a solid round, carding a 78 to finish in a tie for 16th. Halstead did not have any golfers finish inside the top 40 after the first round.

In the team race, Wichita-Collegiate leads narrowly with a 315, just one stroke ahead of Wichita-Trinity Academy (316). Sabetha (326) and Marysville (330) round out the top four.

In Class 4A,&nbsp;Buhler senior Drew DeMeyer fired an even-par 72 to finish the opening round tied for fifth at the Class 4A boys state golf championship, held Tuesday at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

DeMeyer’s round helped the Crusaders to a team total of 332, placing them sixth in the standings heading into Wednesday’s final round. Sophomore Zach Chance added a 76 (T14), while Nick Chance shot 80 (T24) to bolster Buhler’s team effort.

Pratt was led by senior Grant McAtee, who carded a 74 and sits in a tie for ninth place individually. Freshman Beau Ferrell added an 81 (T24) for the Greenbacks, who are currently tied for ninth in the team standings with Fort Scott at 344.

Wamego sits atop the leaderboard with a 309, followed by Topeka-Hayden (316), Bishop Miege (323), and Andale (325). Wamego also placed three golfers in the top five individually, led by Regan Kueker (2nd), Breckin Miller (4th), and Kaden Tyner (T5).

In Class 5A, Hutchinson saw it's two golfers not place. Senior Mitchell Rice shot a 12-over-par 83 and senior Alex Haas finished 20-over-par 91.

⛳ Day 1 recap: Central Christian School in prime spot for state title in Class 1A

BUHLER, Kan. — Charlie Wells, a volunteer firefighter with the Buhler Fire Department, has been named the Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram First Responder of the Month for May.

Wells, who joined the department in September of 2022, balances his service with his full-time work as a finished carpenter and owner of Wells Carpentry. Despite the demands of running his own business, he responds to calls whenever duty calls.

“I am a self-employed finished carpenter,” Wells said. “That’s what I do during the day. I travel around doing mainly remodels, and if I’m close enough when a call comes in, I drop what I’m doing there and respond to that.”

Though his professional path took a different turn, firefighting was always on Wells’ radar. He completed the Fire Science Program at HutchCC in 2005.

“I actually went to Hutch JUCO, went through the Fire Science Program '03 through '05,” he said. “I didn’t go that route. We ended up moving close enough to Buhler a few years ago that we moved into the fire district, and it worked out to where I was able to get on the fire department there, and that’s kind of where I ended up where I am now.”

The Buhler Fire Department includes about 20 volunteer firefighters who remain on-call year-round.

“We are all on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” Wells said. “We carry pagers and we have an app on our phones that when we get dispatched they both go off, and anybody that is available makes an effort to show up for it no matter when it is.”

Wells said the department typically handles about 100 calls per year, but that number was slightly higher in 2024.

“I think last year, the year total we ran about 130 calls,” he said. “That’s pretty typical. That was a little more than average, usually we’re a little closer to 100 — and a lot of those come during the dry season, late winter before things start greening up in the spring time. A lot of those are grass fires, brush fires. That’s really when we’re the busiest, grass fire season.”

The department operates a range of equipment, including a command unit, a fire engine, a new tender acquired about a year ago, a large brush truck with a 1,200-gallon tank, and three small brush trucks outfitted with 300-gallon tanks.

“We have a command unit that we got here a few years ago,” Wells said. “Typically our chief or captains will respond in that.”

Training is a key component of the department’s readiness. The team trains monthly, with larger joint sessions held quarterly with neighboring departments.

“The first Thursday of every month, we have training in the evening,” Wells said. “Then once every quarter, we have countywide training where we get together with Haven and Nickerson and the guys out in the western part of the county. We work together with Hutch Fire and we all get together and have big training days usually on a Saturday morning.”

For Wells, the call to serve is rooted in a desire to help those in their most urgent moments.

“My favorite part is just giving back to the community,” he said. “We’re all problem solvers, and when somebody calls 911 it’s because they’ve got a problem and they’ve exhausted all of their resources. They can’t solve it, and they need somebody else to help do that for them. It’s kind of just the excitement of the unknown. You don’t know what’s going to be next. Unfortunately, it could be something really tragic, but it’s just an opportunity to give back to somebody in need.”

Wells was nominated by Beck Wells: "Charlie Wells is a hardworking and passionate firefighter, Boy Scouts leader, husband, and father. He is always prepared to lend a hand to anyone who needs it with a calm and patient demeanor. He takes his leadership very seriously, always seeking out new opportunities to learn how to be a better leader through the books he reads and the people he associates with. I have never met anyone with a cross word to say about Charlie, and we are all beyond proud to have him in our community. He deserves so much praise and is rarely recognized for all of the work he does for his family, his friends, and everyone around him, so I hope you will please consider him for this award.”

Wells' Fire Chief Casey Howard said this about Wells: "He is an extremely dedicated member of our department. He goes above and beyond the standard to provide the services needed every time the pager sets tone. He is well-deserved of this award."

TOPEKA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School led the way for area programs at the 2025 KSHSAA Girls 5-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships, held May 22–24 at Hummer Sports Park.

The Salthawks tallied 41 points to place 16th overall, with standout performances across relays and individual events. Hutchinson’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Alayna Wiggins, Emma Buller, Morgan Most and AJ Gooch placed 11th in the finals (4:04.35). In the 200 medley relay, the team of Julianna Stivers, Gooch, Wiggins and Most took 11th (2:00.89).

Individually, Gooch earned 7th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.27 and added a point with a 16th-place finish in the 200 IM. Wiggins also qualified for finals in the 100 backstroke, finishing 13th.

McPherson and Hesston each earned top-30 team finishes, scoring 26 and 24 points, respectively.

McPherson was paced by senior Bree Pickerell, who scored in two events. She placed eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:37.52) and 13th in the 200 IM (2:25.72). Teammate Adyson Wiens added a 14th-place finish in the IM. The Bullpups’ 200 freestyle relay team finished 14th in 1:51.13.

Hesston junior Angela Ewert earned the Swathers’ top individual finish, placing eighth in the 200 freestyle (2:00.48) and ninth in the 500 freestyle (5:35.69). Hesston added points in the 200 medley relay with a 15th-place finish.

Buhler’s top showing came from freshman Hannah Swain, who placed 13th in the 500 freestyle (5:46.58). The Crusaders also competed in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Andover won the team title with 304 points, followed by Blue Valley Southwest (276.5) and Lansing (215). Hillsboro’s Lauryn Vogt highlighted the meet by winning state titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, including a state-record time of 23.39 seconds in the 50.

 </figure>SEAN BOSTON Hutch PostTOPEKA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School led the way for area programs at the 2025 KSHSAA Girls 5-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships, held May 22–24 at Hummer Sports Park.The Salthawks tallied 41 points to place 16th overall, with standout performances across relays and individual events. Hutchinson’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Alayna Wiggins, Emma Buller, Morgan Most and AJ Gooch placed 11th in the finals (4:04.35). In the 200 medley relay, the team of Julianna Stivers, Gooch, Wiggins and Most took 11th (2:00.89).Individually, Gooch earned 7th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.27 and added a point with a 16th-place finish in the 200 IM. Wiggins also qualified for finals in the 100 backstroke, finishing 13th.McPherson and Hesston each earned top-30 team finishes, scoring 26 and 24 points, respectively.McPherson was paced by senior Bree Pickerell, who scored in two events. She placed eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:37.52) and 13th in the 200 IM (2:25.72). Teammate Adyson Wiens added a 14th-place finish in the IM. The Bullpups’ 200 freestyle relay team finished 14th in 1:51.13.Hesston junior Angela Ewert earned the Swathers’ top individual finish, placing eighth in the 200 freestyle (2:00.48) and ninth in the 500 freestyle (5:35.69). Hesston added points in the 200 medley relay with a 15th-place finish.Buhler’s top showing came from freshman Hannah Swain, who placed 13th in the 500 freestyle (5:46.58). The Crusaders also competed in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.Andover won the team title with 304 points, followed by Blue Valley Southwest (276.5) and Lansing (215). Hillsboro’s Lauryn Vogt highlighted the meet by winning state titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, including a state-record time of 23.39 seconds in the 50.

Jacye Reimer of Hutchinson claimed the win in the IMCA Stock Car A Feature, holding off fellow Hutchinson driver David Brown and Wichita’s Colten Kelly to take the checkered flag.

Randy Wilson of Wichita led the IMCA Modified feature, finishing ahead of Hutchinson’s Jake Nightingale and Casey Jo Gemmill of Goddard.

In the IMCA Hobby Stock division, Morgan Olmstead of Overton, Nebraska, took the top spot. Cody Williams of Minneapolis, Kansas, finished second, with Salina’s Garrit Caswell in third.

Salina’s Warren Huffman won the IMCA Northern Sport Mod A Feature, finishing ahead of Brian May of Spearville and Dodge City’s Joey Maupin.

Promoter Phil Nightengale said the event’s Kids Night drew a record 211 children, the highest attendance in the event’s history.

SaltCity Racing returns to the track Friday, May 31, with a special event featuring the ASCS National Sprint Car Tour and Super Stocks. Pits open at 3 p.m., gates at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:30 p.m., and racing starts at 7 p.m.

SALINA, Kan. — Kansas Wesleyan University will honor a unique father-son legacy this fall as Dave Dallas and his son, Drew Dallas, are inducted into the Jerry Jones Coyote Athletic Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend.

The Hall of Fame breakfast and induction ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, inside Muir Gymnasium on the KWU campus.

Dave Dallas, who served as KWU’s head football coach from 1997 to 2013, helped rebuild the program and led the Coyotes to KCAC championships in 2001 and 2002. He ranks second in program history with 94 wins and was named KCAC Coach of the Year in 2001. Known for his leadership and commitment to student-athletes, he coached six NAIA All-Americans and more than 300 All-KCAC honorees.

His son, Drew Dallas, followed in his footsteps, first as a quarterback for the Coyotes from 2006 to 2007, then as a rising star in the coaching ranks. Drew will be inducted for his post-graduate accomplishments, having led Hutchinson Community College to a 49-5 record over five seasons as head coach. His Blue Dragon teams have claimed four Jayhawk Conference titles and two NJCAA National Championships, cementing his status as one of the premier coaches in junior college football.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — SaltCity Racing is gearing up for it's third race of the 2025 season with the Murphy Tractor and Equipment IMCA Season Opener at the Kansas State Fairgrounds this evening.&nbsp;

"The IMCA is the largest sanctioned bodied through the country," Phil Nightingale with SaltCity Racing said. "They have over 10,000 racers registered to race throughout the country, that's one reason why I went with that sanctioning body at the Kansas State Fairgrounds for that sole reason."

The four different IMCA classes that will be racing include IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Modified, IMCA Hobby Stock and IMCA Northern SportMod.

"The one that will probably put on the best show is what we call the A mods, they're the fastest cars we have," Nightingale said. "That's a modified car with open front wheels and about a 400 horse motor. Then we have the B mods, which is kind of just like the A mods, but it's just a little less horsepower and a little less money to make that car go. Then we have the stock car class, which looks just like a stock car and those guys put on a great show. Then we have what we call the hobby stock class, which is almost like a stock car, just take the glass out of it, put role bars in it and you've got some different rules to follow. Those hobby stock guys put on a great show, we had them one time last year and so excited to have them back for 2025."

This evening also serves as Kids Night at SaltCity Racing.

"Every kid under 12 gets in free," Nightingale said. "The first 100 kids is going to get a ton of prizes, so you want to be first in line for the first 100. We've had some great sponsors that have stepped up and paid for those kids to get in free. There will be all kinds of prizes and giveaways, we're also going to have tons of neat vehicles for kids to play on and touch. We're going to have police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, the SWAT team is going to be there, the National Guard is going to be there."&nbsp;

SaltCity Racing gears up for third race of season Friday

Riders from across Kansas will hit the road this Saturday for the fourth annual “Cruise for the Cure” poker run, a motorcycle (and road-legal vehicle) event organized to raise funds for the Cancer Council of Reno County. Hosted by Bretz Injury Law in partnership with Salty Cycles, the charity ride has grown into a community-fueled tradition drawing more than 100 participants in past years.

The event begins Saturday morning, May 24, at Salty Cycles, located at 129 E. Sherman in Hutchinson. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m., with engines revving for the start at 10:30 a.m. Riders will embark on an 87-mile route that stretches into neighboring Harvey County, stopping at four checkpoints: Buhler Gas Company in Buhler, Lighthouse Coffee in Inman, Dan’s Cycle in Hesston, and the The Barn in Burrton, before returning to Bretz Injury Law for lunch, raffles and awards.

Entry fees are $25 for one poker hand or $50 for three. The poker element of the ride includes drawing cards at each stop, with a final skill game determining the last card. Prizes will be awarded for the best hand, second-best hand, and even the worst hand—a playful tradition that adds fun to the serious cause.

“This event was created to support a cause nearly everyone can relate to,” said Casey Ensz, an organizer with Bretz Injury Law. “Cancer affects almost every family, and the Cancer Council of Reno County does a tremendous job helping those who fall through the cracks of insurance and other support systems.”

Half of the entry fees go directly to the Cancer Council, which provides assistance with transportation, food and other expenses for local patients. Additional fundraising will include raffles with prizes donated by area businesses. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. A free lunch catered by Cancun Mexican Grill will be served to participants upon return.

And the event isn’t just for bikers. “If you’ve got a road-legal vehicle—even a Toyota Camry—you’re welcome to join us,” Ensz said. “It’s about raising money and awareness. The more, the merrier.”

The event marks the first poker run of the season for Bretz Injury Law, which organizes four charity rides annually, benefiting various causes including Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Hosted by Bretz Injury Law in partnership with Salty Cycles, the charity ride has grown into a community-fueled tradition drawing more than 100 participants in past years.The event begins Saturday morning, May 24, at Salty Cycles, located at 129 E. Sherman in Hutchinson. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m., with engines revving for the start at 10:30 a.m. Riders will embark on an 87-mile route that stretches into neighboring Harvey County, stopping at four checkpoints: Buhler Gas Company in Buhler, Lighthouse Coffee in Inman, Dan’s Cycle in Hesston, and the The Barn in Burrton, before returning to Bretz Injury Law for lunch, raffles and awards.<figure>

 </figure>Entry fees are $25 for one poker hand or $50 for three. The poker element of the ride includes drawing cards at each stop, with a final skill game determining the last card. Prizes will be awarded for the best hand, second-best hand, and even the worst hand—a playful tradition that adds fun to the serious cause.“This event was created to support a cause nearly everyone can relate to,” said Casey Ensz, an organizer with Bretz Injury Law. “Cancer affects almost every family, and the Cancer Council of Reno County does a tremendous job helping those who fall through the cracks of insurance and other support systems.”Half of the entry fees go directly to the Cancer Council, which provides assistance with transportation, food and other expenses for local patients. Additional fundraising will include raffles with prizes donated by area businesses. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. A free lunch catered by Cancun Mexican Grill will be served to participants upon return.And the event isn’t just for bikers. “If you’ve got a road-legal vehicle—even a Toyota Camry—you’re welcome to join us,” Ensz said. “It’s about raising money and awareness. As summer approaches, Buhler USD 313 and Hutchinson USD 308 and other schools are stepping up to ensure no child goes hungry during the break. Districts are offering free meals for all children ages 18 and under, with no applications or proof of income required—just a commitment to feeding the community.&nbsp;

Hutchinson USD 308: Grab and Go Convenience

From&nbsp;June 2 through July 25, Hutchinson USD 308 will operate its&nbsp;Summer Meal Program, offering nutritious meals through convenient&nbsp;Grab &amp; Go&nbsp;sites. Please note:&nbsp;No meals will be served on July 4.&nbsp;

Local school districts to serve summer meals

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — All three area high school girls soccer teams were eliminated from postseason play Thursday evening in their respective regional championship games.

In Class 5A, Hutchinson High School saw its season come to an end with an 8-0 loss at Maize South. The Salthawks trailed 6-0 at halftime before allowing two second-half goals. Hutchinson finishes the 2025 season with an 11-7 record. Maize South (16-2) advances to Monday’s state quarterfinals.

In Class 4-1A, Buhler suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Mulvane in penalty kicks. The Crusaders fell behind 1-0 but tied the match in the 50th minute on a goal by Madi McCool. Mulvane (12-6) moves on to the quarterfinals, while Buhler ends its season at 12-6.

Also in Class 4-1A, McPherson fell at home to Topeka-Hayden, 2-1. The Bullpups struck first with an early goal, but Hayden equalized with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Wildcats netted the go-ahead goal with 26 minutes left in the match. McPherson had opportunities late but couldn’t convert.

A recent fire at the Reno County landfill has prompted local fire officials to issue renewed warnings about the dangers of improperly handled lithium-ion batteries. 

Hutchinson Fire Marshal Michael Cain cited rising fire safety concerns tied to the popular batteries, which power everything from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles and e-scooters. 

“You are correct — lithium-ion batteries are becoming a large issue, not only here, but throughout the country,” Cain said. “People don’t realize just how much we rely on them.” 

According to Cain, improper charging, exposure to high temperatures, and incorrect disposal are key factors in battery-related fires. In many cases, consumers overcharge their devices or leave them plugged in under hazardous conditions, such as inside hot vehicles during the summer months. 

“That can cause the batteries to go into what’s called thermal runaway,” Cain said. “They’ll catch fire or, in some cases, even explode.”

Swelling in phone batteries, for example, is often a sign of failure, though protective cases can sometimes hide the warning signs. <figure>

 </figure>Officials also emphasized that lithium-ion battery fires require specialized firefighting equipment. Traditional water methods are ineffective and even dangerous. “We’ve got a new foam trailer to help with that,” Cain said. “Once those car batteries get going, they’re very difficult to put out.”<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/293ff1e4-2f3d-4d46-9687-8cf54e16b421">(LINK)&nbsp;Recycling lithium-ion batteries and other hazardous household waste&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>The recent fire at the landfill originated from lithium-ion batteries improperly discarded in the general waste pit, where heavy equipment further damaged them, creating a volatile situation. “Once they're in the pit and they get degraded or crushed, it’s a real challenge to suppress that fire,” Cain said. “You don’t know what else might catch fire in there.” To prevent future incidents, the fire department urges residents not to toss batteries into household trash. Instead, they should be taken to the landfill’s designated battery disposal area or dropped off at local retailers equipped to handle hazardous recycling. Home Depot, Lowe’s and Harbor Freight are other locations in town where the batteries can be recycled. As lithium-ion battery use continues to expand, officials say proper handling and disposal are crucial to keeping the community safe.
