Weekend happenings 

The Kansas Prisoner Review Board has granted parole to Jimmie Nelms, a man convicted of murdering Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Conroy O’Brien during a 1978 traffic stop near Matfield Green.&nbsp;

Nelms, now in his 70s, was sentenced to two life terms plus additional years for aggravated kidnapping and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is scheduled to be released to out-of-state family custody, officials said.&nbsp;

The decision has sparked strong backlash from state officials and law enforcement groups, who say Nelms’ release undermines justice for the violent killing of a law enforcement officer.&nbsp;

“This cop killer received two life sentences after he brutally executed a highway patrol officer. Now, he is about to be released on parole. There is something deeply wrong with this picture,” said Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach in a statement. “Those who murder law enforcement officers should expect to receive the death penalty, not to be walking free on the streets of Kansas.”&nbsp;

Trooper O’Brien, 26, was conducting a routine traffic stop on the Kansas Turnpike during the early morning hours of May 24, 1978, when Nelms and two others overpowered him. Authorities said O’Brien was forced at gunpoint into a roadside ditch, where he was pistol-whipped and fatally shot twice in the head with his own service weapon.&nbsp;

The three suspects, later identified as being wanted in a string of armed robberies across multiple states, were apprehended later that day after engaging another trooper in a gunfight. All were taken into custody following a manhunt.&nbsp;

Col. Erik Smith, superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, said he received notice of the parole decision early Wednesday morning and called the announcement “a gut-punch.”&nbsp;

“There is no conceivable world in which the release of a convicted cop killer—an executioner—is acceptable,” Smith said in a written statement. “While we may vehemently disagree with the Board’s decision, we must live with it by continuing to support [O'Brien’s] surviving family and his blue family.”&nbsp;

The Kansas State Troopers Association also condemned the decision, calling the board’s actions “disgraceful and disgusting.”&nbsp;

O’Brien, a native of Hutchinson, Kansas, joined the patrol in 1974 and transferred to the Kansas Turnpike detail in 1977. He was survived by his pregnant wife and their unborn daughter, who never met her father.&nbsp;

Under Kansas law at the time of Nelms’ sentencing, life imprisonment allowed for the possibility of parole. The Prisoner Review Board said it believes Nelms “is able and willing to fulfill the obligations of a law-abiding citizen and… can be released without detriment to the community or to himself.”&nbsp;

Despite continued opposition during parole hearings over the years, including the most recent in March, the board determined Nelms met the criteria for release.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol emphasized that its members will continue to serve with professionalism and dignity and will not forget the sacrifice of Trooper O’Brien.&nbsp;

A memorial for O’Brien is located on the Kansas Turnpike and on the Kansas Highway Patrol’s official website.&nbsp;

Regional tennis tournaments will be held across Kansas on Friday and Saturday, with several Hutch Post-area schools set to compete.

According to the KSHSAA handbook, all matches will be best two out of three sets with a tiebreaker at 6-all. An exception is made for play-in matches — those held to qualify for the 16-player main bracket — which will be played as eight-game pro sets with a tiebreak at 8-all.

For matches labeled M through S, a full third set will be played if necessary. All other matches will use a 10-point super tiebreak in lieu of a third set.

Hutchinson Community Foundation awarded Fund for Reno County grants totaling $183,947 to 28 nonprofit organizations in its first impact cycle this spring.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County Endowment serves as a permanent resource for the changing needs of Reno County. Grants represent an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency, a critical need that requires funding or an opportunity that needs a bit of local support to leverage resources for the community.

Funding for Impact Cycle 1 grants was supplemented by contributions from the following donor advisors through the foundation’s Giving Together program: Sarah and Chuck Blake, Shirley Brandyberry, and Dee and Dave Dillon.

Proposals for the grants are accepted during two annual impact cycles, one in February and one in August. Impact Cycle 1 grants were aimed at projects in the following categories: Community Catalyst, Dynamic Culture, Thriving Kids and Strong Organizations.

The following organizations received grants:

Projects that improve community engagement, communication, confidence and pride.

City of Haven, $2,100: Through its own Love Where You Live initiative, the City of Haven will host interactive events, such as a speed connecting gathering and a guided bike tour, so participants may share ideas and feedback on improving local amenities and programs. These insights will drive future initiatives, ensuring Haven remains a safe, welcoming and vibrant place to live and work.

City of Haven, $2,500: The proposal is for a digital sign to communicate to Haven citizens the programs and activities happening within the city from various municipal entities.

Hutchinson NAACP Youth, $1,700: This project aims to enhance the Hutchinson NAACP Youth’s ability to actively participate in community outreach, which would foster greater community involvement and strengthen the organization’s mission of advocating for equality and positive change. Funding will supplement the costs of educational materials and marketing/engagement tools for outreach efforts, as well as supplies necessary for engagement activities.

Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, $2,500: This project entails purchasing signage as a demonstration project to promote and improve vacant spaces in Downtown Hutchinson. During the implementation stage of the Downtown Master Plan, the signage will visually improve windows in vacant buildings by covering the interior storage and dressing up the Downtown neighborhood in a demonstration block area.

Hutchinson Wesleyan Church, $2,500: Funds will provide necessary startup costs for a monthly free community dinner at the Hutchinson Public Library with the aim of building community and developing relationships across Creekside, Midtown, Grace Arbor and College Grove neighborhoods. The Big Table seeks to use its community dinner-based model to provide meals and foster a sense of belonging for those in need.

Sylvia Helping Hands, $2,459: In the spring of 2024, a few citizens started a community garden with five raised beds to benefit the Sylvia community. Produce was harvested and placed in the city office and library for residents. Funding will allow the Sylvia Helping Hands organization to increase the size of the community garden.

Projects that enhance and celebrate local arts, theater, history and tourism.

Family Community Theatre, $7,600: Funding will help finish renovations of three restrooms in the Flag Theatre lobby.

Emancipation Committee, Hutchinson, KS, $11,500: Funding will help with the costs of inviting an in-state and an out-of-state marching band to participate in the annual Emancipation Parade in August, increasing excitement, pride, attendance and, ultimately, a better understanding of what Emancipation weekend represents.

Hutch in Harmony, $20,000 per year for two years: Funding will help launch the Hutch Pass: Hutchinson Cultural Passport Program, an interactive and educational experience encouraging residents to explore cultural, historical and artistic sites across the county. Participants will receive a physical or digital “passport” through a booklet and will be able to download an app that provides incentives for engaging with local cultural landmarks, businesses and events.

Hutch Rec, $9,700: This project will bring the Hutchinson Municipal Band to performances in Hutch Rec’s Healthy Neighborhood Initiative neighborhoods, as well as the Smallville Festival. The project aims to transform public spaces into lively cultural hubs and foster a deeper sense of community while also increasing the band’s audience and, potentially, supporters.

Stage 9, $7,600: Funding will help with the repair of the Stage 9 theater building façade.

Projects that strengthen the capacity, sustainability and resilience of Reno County community-based organizations.

City of Turon, $7,500: Funding will assist in the repair and maintenance of the entrance and some windows of the 116-year-old Turon Community Building, which serves a variety of functions within the community, including for Friendship Meals, City Council meetings, birthday parties, family gatherings and as a polling place.

The Food Bank of Reno County Inc., $7,500: To accomplish the Food Bank’s goal of reducing food insecurity and improving services for children and families, it is in the process of developing a long-term plan, and part of that plan will require a more spacious and reconfigured facility. Funding will cover part of the project management costs of the project.

Hutch Rec, $1,500: This grant proposal aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the community’s music culture by exploring a strategic partnership with the Hutchinson Municipal Band, Reno County Choral Society and the possible restart of the Hutchinson Symphony. Funding will provide a stipend to people who serve on the exploration task force.

Hutchinson School of Tae Kwon Do, $7,500: This project will allow for the purchase and installation of new training equipment and upgraded lighting to enhance the safety, accessibility and overall learning experience for underprivileged families, thereby fostering personal growth and strengthening the community.

Hutchinson Wesleyan Church, $2,500: This hands-on project, which includes coaching and training, will help participants develop the relational and organizational skills needed to serve The Big Table community dinner events and start their own throughout Hutchinson and Reno County.

Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation, $7,500: Funds will go toward a two-day retreat for the Kansas State Fair board and key staff members to develop a strategic plan.

New Beginnings, $5,000: Funding will allow for replacement of six obsolete lab computers at New Beginnings, which are used by low-income individuals and families for education, communication and applying for jobs.

Rise Up Reno Prevention Network, $4,200: Rise Up Reno staff will work with a trained facilitator of strategic review and planning processes to evaluate current programs and attitudes toward the work they do, and in turn, prepare for the most important priorities they will face moving forward.

Salvation Army, $7,500: The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope initiative is an evidence-based program that strives to break the cycle of poverty by guiding low-income parents with children beyond crisis to stability. Funding will support the salary and benefits of the program’s case manager.

Projects that support high-quality early care and education, youth development and families. Support for these projects also comes from the Helen Adams Hamilton Children and Education Fund of Hutchinson Community Foundation.

City of Arlington, $20,000: Currently, the gymnasium in Arlington’s community building has no heat. As a result, the open gym for youth, as well as the community and family gatherings that previously filled the gym, has halted. This project will restore heat to the gymnasium in the community center through installation of two 60-foot radiant tube heaters and a center-circulating fan.

ESSDACK, $4,500: Many Reno County students living outside of Hutchinson are unable to attend school daily at the Reno County Learning Center inside of the Hutchinson Mall because of lack of funds to purchase gas. Some students travel 80 miles a day round trip. Funding will help provide gas cards for those students so they can attend school.

Girls on the Run, $5,400: In this program, trained, caring and qualified coaches deliver a life-skills curriculum during out-of-school times by guiding small teams of girls through twice-weekly lessons that promote social-emotional learning alongside physical activity.

Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Reno County, $5,500: Funding will assist in providing large-scale match activities between Bigs and Littles.

Kansas Children’s Service League, $5,275: Funds will provide transportation assistance to those enrolled in the Healthy Families program, helping relieve a frequent stressor for families working toward resilience.

Reno County Education Cooperative, $2,300: This proposal will fund training 20 special education teachers in the PAX Good Behavior Game during a summer session.

USD 312-Haven, $7,613: This project aims to initiate the rebuilding of the school library collection with current nonfiction books and quality fiction books starting with reading levels for students in kindergarten through third grade.

Wisdom in Motion, $12,500 per year for two years: This organization serves at-risk and high-potential youth, fostering a sense of connection, empowerment and community engagement through structured mentorship, experiential learning and family-focused initiatives necessary for long-term success. Funds will help cover the costs of experiential learning initiatives, workshops and community engagement to help increase the impact on youth while also creating awareness of and engagement with the organization and programming.

Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, leadership and collaboration to strengthen Reno County. Since 1989, the foundation has granted more than $104 million to organizations.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of West 5th and North Washington.

In 1923, W. Lacy Rosier, owner of the Hutchinson Oil Co., built the Palace Garage at 101 W. 5th Ave.

By 1929, the company name was changed to the Rosier Oil Co. and this location was a filling station and garage, along with four other filling stations with bulk fuel delivery at the airport.

By 1938, it became the Ernie Shaffer Oil Co. and filling station.

By 1946, the building had become the Ray &amp; Streeter Motor Co. as a Chrysler-Plymouth new car dealership. The first photo shows that dealership in 1949.

By 1955, it had become solely the Gordon Ray Motor Co.

In 1962, it became the Downtown Dodge dealership with Earl Atteberry.

In 1967, it became the Downtown Ultravan Showroom. The second photo shows that business in 1969.

From 1972 to 1978, the building was used by Woodwork Mfg. Co. as a storage facility and it was readdressed to 405 N. Washington.

Between 1978 through 1994, Mike and Peggy Livingston operated the Morton Interiors &amp; Galleries from this location. The third photo shows that business in 1994 at the end of their run.

The Hutchinson Art Association acquired the building in 1995. The fourth photo shows what it first looked like.

The fifth photo shows the 2017 remodel to the new black and blue paint scheme, and the look it continues with today.

On March 30, 2025, Emily Kohls replaced John Eberle as the new director of the Hutchinson Art Association, still at 405 N. Washington.

The Jayhawk Conference champion Hutchinson Community College softball team had a program-record 12 players receive All-Jayhawk Conference recognition this season.
The 2025 All-KJCCC Division I softball team was released on Wednesday. The Blue Dragons placed two players on the first time &ndash; shortstop&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_bailey_44zk">Bailey Backhaus</a>&nbsp;and pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/tomlinson_morgan_0v0v">Morgan Tomlinson</a>. Three others earned second-team honors &ndash; third baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/kruger_haley_h3bo">Haley Kruger</a>, center fielder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/kruger_kaibryn_wwcp">Kaibryn Kruger</a>&nbsp;and pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/schmidt_jessica_edec">Jessica Schmidt</a>. Both&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_bailey_44zk">Bailey Backhaus</a>&nbsp;and Tomlinson are repeat first-team selections.
The 12 players selected this season surpass the old record of 11 players set by the 2023 Jayhawk Conference champion Blue Dragons.
The 2025 Blue Dragons posted a 37-11 overall record and tied Butler for the league title with a 27-5 mark. The Blue Dragons went 2-2 in the 2025 Region 6 Tournament.

BAILEY BACKHAUS (So./SS) &ndash; 1st Team <a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_bailey_44zk">Bailey Backhaus</a>&nbsp;concluded an incredible two-year run with the Blue Dragons that included 202 career hits (most by a two-year player in Blue Dragon history) and a career batting average of .502, which established a Blue Dragon career record.
This season, the sophomore from Newkirk, Oklahoma, hit .530, the second-highest batting average in a single season in team history with 98 hits, second only to her record 104 hits from her freshman season in 2024. In 30 KJCCC games, Backhaus hit a torrid .608 (76 for 125) with 64 runs scored and 35 RBIs from the leadoff position.
Of her 98 hits, nine went for doubles and she hit a single-season record 10 triples to up her career record to 16 triples.
Backhaus broke the Blue Dragon single-season stolen base record with 57 steals in 58 attempts. Her 82 career steals tied Lexi Williams (2020-21) for first place in team history.
Backhaus also broke a Blue Dragon single-season record for runs scores with 78, again surpassing her own record of 77 set last season.
Backhaus had a season-long 16 game hitting streak this season and reached base in 33 consecutive games. Se had 31 multi-hit games this season, including three five-hit games against Fort Hays Tech Northwest on March 1, Colby on March 16 and Garden City on April 17. She tied single-game record for runs with five against Pratt on February 26 and Garden City on April 17.
MORGAN TOMLINSON (So./P) &ndash; 1st Team Tomlinson became the first 20-game winner for the Blue Dragons since Holly Kelley in 2016, posting a record of 21-7 with a 3.18 earned run average. In KJCCC play &ndash; where she made 15 starts and eight relief appearances &ndash; Tomlinson was 16-3 with a 3.11 ERA.
The sophomore from Harveyville, Kansas, had 131 strikeouts in 147 1-3 innings pitched this season. She walked only 24 batters and allowed 149 hits with opposing batters hitting only .251 off of her.
Tomlinson pitched two combined no-hitters this season and had six complete games with two complete-game shutouts.
In three-straight starts this season, Tomlinson set new single-game career highs in strikeouts with eight against Colby on March 17, nine against Garden City on March 18 and 10 against Dodge City on March 20.
Tomlinson completed her career with a 37-10 record and a 3.14 earned-run average. She finished with 180 strikeouts in 236 innings. Her 37 wins rank fourth on the Blue Dragon career list and her 180 strikeouts are 10th.
HALEY KRUGER (So./3B) &ndash; 2nd Team Kruger hit .313 this season (41 for 131) with 15 doubles, three home runs and 37 RBIs.
The sophomore from Oklahoma City, had 10 multi-hit games, including a career-high four hits against Pratt on March 29. She also drove in a career-best eight RBIs in that game. The eight RBIs are third most in Blue Dragon single-game history.
Kruger hit .341 in conference play this season with 29 hits, 13 doubles, two home runs and 34 RBIs.
KAIBRYN KRUGER (Fr./CF) &ndash; 2nd Team The freshman from Silver Lake was second on the team in batting this season with a .456 average. Kruger was 73 for 160 with 13 doubles, six triples and seven home runs. She drove in 51 runs and scored 76, which is third-most in Blue Dragon single-season history.
Kruger was 40 of 42 in stolen-base attempts this season, which is No. 3 on the Blue Dragon single-season list.
Kruger matched&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_bailey_44zk">Bailey Backhaus</a>&nbsp;for the longest hitting streak this season at 16 and she will carry a 43-game streak of reach base into next season.
Kruger had 24 multi-hit games, including a season-high four hits against Seward County on March 12.
Kruger had two games with four steals &ndash; Fort Hays Tech Northwest on March on and Labette on March 9 &ndash; to establish a new Blue Dragon single-game record for steals.
JESSICA SCHMIDT (Fr./P) &ndash; 2nd Team A freshman left-handed pitcher from Norfolk, Nebraska, pitched exclusively out of the bullpen this season. Schmidt had a 2-1 record with a team-high three saves and a 2.96 ERA.
Over 52 innings in 27 appearances, Schmidt had 38 strikeouts and allowed opponents only a .238 batting average.
In 18 conference appearances, Schmidt was 1-0 with three saves and a 2.73 ERA.
Schmidt had a single-game high four strikeouts three different times. She had saves against Pratt on February 26, Butler on April 7 and Seward County on April 13.
BROOKE BACKHAUS (So./1B) &ndash; Honorable Mention The only Blue Dragon to appear in all 48 games this season,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_brooke_ngsp">Brooke Backhaus</a>&nbsp;hit .321 (53 for 165) with 13 doubles, two home runs and 40 RBIs.
A sophomore from Newkirk, Oklahoma, Backhaus' .987 career fielding percentage ties for seventh in Blue Dragon history.
BRIE BRAWNER (So./LF) &ndash; Honorable Mention The sophomore left-fielder from Haven wound up hitting .312 (43 for 138) with four extra-base hits, including a home run at Colby. Brawner scored 37 runs and was 11 of 11 in stolen bases.
EMILY DICE (So./2B) &ndash; Honorable Mention Stepping into the full-time starting role at second base this season, the sophomore from Wichita, served as another leadoff hitter from the No. 9 spot in the order. Dice hit .377 this season (57 for 151) with seven doubles, an inside-the-park home run and a out-of-the-park homer. She drove in 32 RBIs this season. Dice was 16 of 18 on steals this season.
TAIBOR GOLLY (Fr./C) &ndash; Honorable Mention The freshman catcher from Grimes, Iowa, led the Blue Dragons with 11 home runs and 71 RBIs this season. She was second on the team with 20 doubles. Golly hit .444 for the season (71 for 160) with a slugging percentage of .788. Golly had three two-home run games this season against Colby twice on March 16 and Fort Hays Tech Northwest on April 2. Golly was also named to the All-Region 6 Tournament team.
ADDI LUTZ (Fr./Utl.) &ndash; Honorable Mention The freshman from Olathe had some clutch hits this season, including both the game-tying and walk-off hits in Hutchinson's come-from-behind 7-6 win over Butler on nine innings on March 6 at Fun Valley. Lutz hit .331 in her freshman season as a catcher and designated player. She went 44 for 133 this season with three doubles, two home runs, 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored.
GABBY STAUFFER (Fr./RF) &ndash; Honorable Mention The Blue Dragons' freshman right-fielder from Wichita was the fourth player this season to post a batting average of .400 or higher, hitting .406 (69 for 170). Stauffer had a team-high 21 doubles, five home runs and was second on the team with 64 RBIs. Against Colby on April 16, Stauffer became this sixth Blue Dragon player with three home runs in a game after going 3 for 8 with eight RBIs against the Trojans.
AUBREE THOMAS (Fr./P) &ndash; Honorable Mention The freshman starting pitcher from Hays posted a 13-3 record with a 4.18 ERA in 24 starts this season. Thomas struck out 72 in 90 1-3 innings pitched this season and opponents hit .292 against her. Thomas' top performance this season came in the postseason, a complete-game two-hit shutout of Seward County in a 1-0 win over the Saints in the opening round of the Region 6 Tournament on Friday in Dodge City.</div>

Traveling within a 60-mile radius an average of three days per week to fulfill these responsibilities is typical. This position works with the VP of Public Relations (VPPR) to organize and conduct events designed to develop and maintain census and to establish and maintain demand for The Wesley’s services. The Marketing Director will assist the VPPR with creative marketing solutions and media advertising and participate in off-campus events. The position requires a friendly, professional, and knowledgeable person to positively represent The Wesley at all times.

Public Works Director Cecil Weible tells us that the 30 Avenue reconstruction project is in the pavement restoration phase. &nbsp;They have had some weather-related delays due to recent rainfall. &nbsp;‘&nbsp;

Procon Construction has completed the installation of a new curb and gutter and has poured the east bound lane of 30 Avenue. &nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>The project is trending for a late May completion with the roadway opening to traffic. &nbsp;<h2>Woodie Seat Phase II</h2>Weible tells us that the project is trending on schedule for Kansas Concrete’s goal of opening in late fall of this year. &nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>

The Avenue A bridge has been demolished, and removal of the debris is ongoing. &nbsp;&nbsp;Next up is removal of the Avenue A pavement between Adams Street and Madison Street and continued excavation of Woodie Seat southward to Avenue B. &nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/1a2873e4-6814-4b60-ad88-6d4e400b7b0b">LINK:&nbsp;&nbsp;Woodie Seat Phase II detours begin</a>New stormwater pipe and structure installation is expected to begin soon. &nbsp;There are cameras on the water tower that provide a timelapse of the project. &nbsp;It can be viewed at this<a href="https://timelapse.hutchgov.com/North%20West%20View.mp4"> link.</a> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>State Fair Detention Basin</h2>The State Fair Detention Basin was announced in 2024. &nbsp;It is set to be built behind the Water Treatment Center on the southwest corner of 23 Avenue and Severance Street. &nbsp;Weible tells us that the design of the water basin is scheduled to be completed this month with an anticipated presentation to the City Council in June or July.&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/fe428551-6c85-47b2-bdfb-15a9f617cf45">LINK:&nbsp;Public works to build stormwater detention basin</a>There are several projects that need to be completed before the detention basin construction can begin.
