As temperatures begin to rise, so does the need for relief from the heat — and thanks to a successful community fan drive, dozens of Reno County residents will be able to stay cooler this summer.

This year’s effort brought in 53 fans for distribution, including 44 donated through Westlake Ace Hardware’s fan drive and another nine from a separate donor. Westlake tell us that the fans are the result of $650 customer donations collected through a recent round-up campaign. 

Organizers say the donations are a critical resource for families trying to lower their air conditioning bills or manage without central air entirely.

“This year is really important to us,” said Major Paul James of the Salvation Army. “When I first arrived in 2019, we had a large surplus. But demand has grown, especially with electric bills being so high. People are looking for ways to save — and a fan can make a big difference.”

Typically, the organization enters the season with leftover fans from the year before. But that wasn’t the case this year. “We started with just 60 fans, and they went quickly,” James said. “Thankfully, the weather has been a little cooler so far, but the need is picking up now.”

The Salvation Army is distributing fans by appointment only to manage the volume of activity in their building. Those interested in receiving a fan should call (620) 663-3353 to set up an appointment. Proof of address and a photo ID are required to qualify.

The Salvation Army expressed deep appreciation to Westlake Ace Hardware and the community for their support. “This drive created awareness, and that awareness brought generosity. We’re truly grateful for everyone who helped us meet the needs of our neighbors.”

MARC JACOBS Hutch Post The Reno County Kansas Amateur Radio Association is inviting the public to learn more about amateur, or “ham,” radio during two upcoming events aimed at education, outreach, and emergency preparedness.

The first event, the group’s annual Field Day, will take place this weekend at Gottschalk Park, near 23rd and Poplar, at the old main entrance of the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Field Day begins at 2 p.m. Saturday and continues through 2 p.m. Sunday.

“This is a national event that’s been going on since 1933,” said Mark Rankin, a member of the association. “It gives us a chance to practice setting up and operating off the grid — using batteries, solar, or generators — just like we would in an actual disaster.”

The 24-hour event allows operators to make radio contacts across North America and test equipment reliability without the use of internet or commercial power. Members will set up a 100-foot telescoping radio tower, part of Reno County’s “Communications on Wheels” trailer, to simulate disaster response capabilities.

Rankin noted that Field Day also serves as an open house. “We want the public to stop by, talk with us, see the equipment, and even try it out,” he said. A special “Get on the Air” station will allow visitors to make supervised transmissions under a licensed operator’s guidance.

In addition to hobbyist interests, the association plays a key role in public safety. Many members are part of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and are trained to assist Reno County Emergency Management with communications during natural disasters and severe weather.

“Amateur radio becomes essential when cell towers and internet go down,” Rankin said. “We provide eyes on the ground and a reliable line of communication.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Adam Comer has worn many hats, a patrol officer, youth coach, and now school resource officer, but all of them share a common thread: serving the Hutchinson community he’s proud to call home.

Comer, a Hutchinson native, was recently named the Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram First Responder of the Month for June. The recognition, he said, came as a surprise, and a meaningful affirmation of the work he’s doing.

“It gave me confirmation that what I’m doing is making a difference,” Comer said. “I have a great appreciation for it.”

Comer joined the Hutchinson Police Department in September 2022, following layoffs at Siemens, where he previously worked. That moment, he said, was a turning point, a chance to pursue a career built on service, pride and purpose.

“I wanted to get into something meaningful, something with a sense of pride and a little more stability,” Comer said. “Law enforcement gave me that.”

After starting on patrol, Comer transitioned into his current role as a school resource officer. While he began the SRO position near the end of the last school year, the upcoming fall will mark his first full year in the role,&nbsp; covering Hutchinson Middle School 7 and Hutchinson Middle School 8.

Comer said the SRO position allows him to build relationships with students and be a positive influence, shaped in part by his own experiences growing up.

“I’ve coached youth sports for around 15 years and built strong connections with a lot of kids in the area,” he said. “I’ve made mistakes in my life, and if I can help a kid avoid those same ones, then that means something.”

When school is in session, Comer is dedicated full-time to his SRO duties. During the summer months, he returns to street patrol, continuing to protect and serve in another capacity.

Outside of uniform, Comer remains active in the community. A father of four, he volunteers as a youth coach and supports his children’s activities.

“He is a dedicated officer as well as a hardworking father,” said Cindy Clark, who nominated Comer for the award. “He enjoys his job and loves the community he works for. He makes a point to find the best in everyone.”

That commitment is rooted in the pride Comer has for his hometown.

“Being born and raised here in Hutchinson, I feel strongly about the community,” he said. “I try to do my part in making it a better place, whether that’s on patrol, in the schools, or just talking to someone and getting them to smile.”

Comer honored as First Responder of the Month, proud to serve hometown

Emergency crews responded to a vehicle fire Tuesday morning at the Terra Nova Apartments in McPherson, where flames quickly spread to multiple vehicles in the complex’s parking lot.

The McPherson Fire Department was dispatched at 9:38 a.m., along with officers from the McPherson Police Department and the McPherson County Sheriff's Office, to the scene at 1423 Genesis Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters found two vehicles fully engulfed in flames, with fire extending to a third nearby vehicle.

Crews acted quickly to extinguish the blaze, preventing further damage to surrounding vehicles or property. Officials said the close proximity of the vehicles in the lot, along with windy conditions, contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

An investigation into the origin and cause of the fire in the first vehicle is ongoing. Authorities say no foul play is suspected at this time. No injuries were reported.

The incident remains under review by fire officials.

 Local law enforcement agencies are warning Reno County residents about a recent string of scams in which victims were tricked into sending thousands of dollars via Bitcoin.

The Hutchinson Police Department and the Reno County Sheriff’s Office say they’ve received multiple reports over the past two weeks involving scammers impersonating law enforcement officials and federal agencies. In one case, a victim was conned out of thousands of dollars by someone posing as a Reno County Sheriff’s detective. Another report involved an individual who lost $4,300 after being contacted by someone claiming to represent a federal agency.

Authorities emphasize that these scams often use high-pressure tactics and threats of arrest to manipulate victims into making immediate payments using Bitcoin—a digital currency that is difficult to track or recover.

“Law enforcement agencies will never call and collect payments to avoid arrest,” officials said in the Facebook Post. “No law enforcement entity, including the court system, will demand payment through gift cards, Bitcoin, or similar methods.”

Residents are urged to be cautious of unsolicited calls requesting money and to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a law enforcement officer by contacting the agency directly.

Sheriff's Department, Police Department warn of Bitcoin scam 

The Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson is celebrating National Boys and Girls Club Week, June 23–27, by inviting the community to step inside its mission through events, alumni engagement, and youth showcases.

The national observance, recognized by more than 5,000 clubs across the globe, celebrates the life-changing impact of Boys and Girls Clubs in their communities. Locally, the Hutchinson club is marking its 35th year with a theme of “Open the Blue Door”, encouraging former members and community supporters to reconnect and see the club’s progress firsthand.

“This is a rally week,” said Lance Patterson, CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson. “It’s a chance to show off the great work our youth are doing and let alumni and supporters walk back through our doors to see how we’ve grown.”

The club is serving more than 500 children and teens in its summer programs, averaging 300 participants daily. Activities this week include a focus on health and wellness, workforce readiness, creative arts, and career planning. On Tuesday, the club highlighted its Work-Based Learning initiative, which places more than 30 teens in their first job experiences throughout the community.

“Fit for the Future” is the week’s guiding theme, a nod to both physical health and career preparation. Staff and members donned workout gear on Monday as part of a wellness kickoff. Later in the week, art will take center stage as an Atlanta-based artist is leading teens in self-portrait projects using a variety of media.

The community is invited to a family night and open house Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Shadduck Park Community Center, 600 W. 2nd Ave. Current members, families, alumni, and newcomers are encouraged to attend. The club’s Avenue A site is full for summer, but openings remain for incoming sixth graders and older youth at Shadduck.

Patterson also announced that the Hutchinson club is helping to launch a similar program in Salina. Interviews are underway for a new director, and the goal is to open the new site by November.

“We’re excited to help build something from the ground up in Salina,” Patterson said. “It speaks volumes about the strength and reputation of what we’ve built here in Hutchinson.”

According to the club’s 2024 Impact Report, 99% of teen members believe they are prepared to succeed in the workplace, and 89% report an understanding of how their emotions impact their actions—skills the organization emphasizes through daily interaction and mentorship.

“Those results don’t happen by accident,” said Lindsey Fields, Director of Impact. “They’re the product of consistent support, strong relationships, and helping kids try things they wouldn’t have tried otherwise.”

Funding remains a challenge, however. The club relies heavily on grants, with 61% of its budget coming from such sources, including a federal 21st Century Community Learning Center grant that remains uncertain for future cycles.

“Grants give us heartburn because of their unpredictability,” Patterson said. “We’re constantly working to increase individual and local support so we can continue to meet the needs of our community no matter what.”

Despite funding hurdles, the club remains a critical community resource.

“Our youth are the future of this community,” Patterson said. “And our job is to make sure they’re ready for it.”

Kroger, the parent company of Dillons Stores and one of the nation’s largest supermarket chains, has announced plans to close nearly 60 of its stores across the United States over the next 18 months.

The move, revealed in the company’s <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/56873/000110465925060909/tm2518164d1_ex99-1.htm">first-quarter 2025 earnings report</a> released Friday, reflects what Kroger described as a strategic effort to improve its bottom line while reinvesting in customer experience.

Kroger's first quarter ended on May 24.&nbsp;

According to the report, the closures are expected to provide a "modest financial benefit" and will affect roughly 2% of Kroger's total store count. As of the beginning of its current fiscal year, Kroger operated 2,731 locations nationwide.

The company did not release a list of which stores will close.&nbsp;

The report stated that all employees at the stores which will be closing will be offered positions at other Kroger locations, according to the company. No specific timelines for individual store closures were in the report.

Kroger emphasized that cost savings from the closures will be directed toward improving the in-store experience for customers, although the report did not have any information specifically addressing the improvements.&nbsp;

The announcement comes at a time when the grocery industry is undergoing rapid change, with rising competition from online retailers and shifting consumer habits putting pressure on traditional supermarket models.

DODGE CITY &ndash; Maize South&rsquo;s Christian McDonald found himself in the perfect spot at the perfect time to deliver the signature moment of Saturday&rsquo;s Kansas Shrine Bowl.&nbsp; Moments after the West offense found a spark with a touchdown drive to take the lead, McDonald added an early dagger in the third quarter, scoring on a 28-yard interception return to put the West on its way to a 26-8 victory in a windy 52nd edition of the Shrine Bowl at Memorial Stadium.&nbsp; The defensive back jumped a route in the right flat and followed his blockers up the sideline to highlight a 19-0 third quarter for the West. &ldquo;I had to make sure I was assignment correct and reading the quarterback,&rdquo; McDonald said. &ldquo;Anything that came to the flats, that was me. I just made sure I was underneath the route and once the play came to me I jumped on it.&nbsp; &ldquo;I took advantage of the opportunity I had.&rdquo; The West followed up McDonald&rsquo;s pick-six with another defensive stop and tacked on a 1-yard TD from Cheney quarterback Josh Burdick late in the third frame for the final points of the game.&nbsp; &ldquo;That (pick-six) was really electrifying for the whole team,&rdquo; McDonald said. &ldquo;It wouldn&rsquo;t have happened if it wasn&rsquo;t for my lead blocker (Derby&rsquo;s James Middlebrook). For more than three decades, New Beginnings has been a pillar of hope for those in Hutchinson and Reno County who’ve lost their footing — yet many in the community still don’t know it exists.

“We’re just busy doing the work,” said Sarah Gonzalez, CEO of New Beginnings. “We help people who’ve lost their way — people without homes, living in poverty — rebuild their lives. That’s always been our mission.”

Founded over 30 years ago, New Beginnings operates largely behind the scenes, but its impact is substantial. The nonprofit’s approach is comprehensive, addressing not just immediate needs like shelter, but also long-term stability through housing, employment, and health care access.

At the heart of its housing services is the Noel Lodge, an emergency shelter located at 400 W. Second Avenue. For those needing more than temporary relief, New Beginnings offers transitional housing, giving individuals and families time and support to regain stability.

But the organization didn’t stop at shelter alone.

Since 2006, New Beginnings has been tackling the root of homelessness by building affordable housing, beginning with Walnut Court Apartments. One of its most notable projects transformed the long-abandoned and graffiti-covered Grace Hospital on Main Street into 29 affordable apartments — breathing new life into the building and creating opportunities for residents to rejoin the community.

Gonzalez emphasizes that housing alone isn’t enough. “We realized that housing and employment go hand in hand. You can have a home, but you still have to pay rent,” she said.

To bridge that gap, the organization launched a transitional jobs program designed to help individuals overcome employment barriers. Participants gain valuable experience, including in construction — recently building small homes as part of their job training.

New Beginnings has also stepped into the healthcare space, partnering with Great Plains Family Medicine to provide a private, direct primary care clinic. With funding secured through grants, clients can access essential medical services and prescriptions — a critical step toward becoming employable and self-sufficient.

“I compare it to a ladder out of a hole,” said Gonzalez. “Many people are missing rungs. We’re building those rungs back in — shelter, jobs, health care, support — so people can climb out and rebuild their lives.”

The key ingredient to the organization's success? Time.

“It took time for people to fall through the cracks, and it takes time to rebuild,” Gonzalez said. “Most services are short-term. We stay with people long enough to make sure the change sticks.”

As New Beginnings continues to quietly reshape lives, Gonzalez hopes more people will come to recognize that the path out of homelessness and poverty is not paved with quick fixes — but with comprehensive, patient, and deeply personal support.

More than 2,000 race fans packed the stands Friday night at the Kansas State Fairgrounds’ historic half-mile oval, as Saltcity Racing delivered another adrenaline-filled evening of IMCA competition.

The highlight of the night came when Hutchinson’s own Jayce Reimer claimed yet another first-place finish in the #775 IMCA Stock Car. After 15 hard-fought laps, Reimer once again proved why he’s a fan favorite, holding off a fast field to take the win on his home track.

In the IMCA Modifieds, the race was tight from start to finish, with drivers trading paint and positions throughout the feature. But when the checkered flag waved, it was Tim Hamilton of Lindsay, Oklahoma, who emerged victorious, earning a first-place feature win and the roar of the crowd.

The night also saw big wins in two other IMCA classes.

Warren Huffman of Salina, Kansas, came out on top in the Northern SportMod feature, showcasing speed and consistency to capture the win. Meanwhile, in the Hobby Stock division, Cody Williams of Minneapolis, Kansas, battled through a competitive field to secure first place.

The evening marked another successful night of grassroots racing in Hutchinson, where local talent and regional standouts alike delivered edge-of-your-seat action.

Next up at Saltcity Racing is a doubleheader weekend fans won’t want to miss. The Evans Building USAC Silver Crown Salt City 100 rolls into town on Friday, July 18, and Saturday, July 19.

Hometown hero and regional racers dominate Friday night at Saltcity Racing

Amid ongoing labor shortages in the agriculture industry, the Trump administration has reportedly directed federal immigration enforcement agencies to avoid raids on farms, hotels, and restaurants—offering temporary relief to an industry increasingly dependent on immigrant labor.&nbsp;

According to recent comments from agriculture officials and observers, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has instructed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hold back from conducting worksite raids at certain critical labor sites, including large farms and food processing plants. The move follows concerns raised by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Secretary Reynolds, who emphasized the importance of seasonal labor to maintaining the nation’s food supply.&nbsp;

“The President understands that farmers are struggling right now,” John Jenkinson said in a recent interview. “He’s pulling back a bit on enforcement at farms because we need crops harvested, and we simply don't have enough legal laborers willing to do that work.”&nbsp;

In areas such as Southern California, where crops like lettuce and other ground-harvested produce require significant manual labor, farm owners have expressed alarm over the potential for ICE operations to halt operations during the peak season. Mechanical harvesting remains limited for many crops, making hand labor indispensable.&nbsp;

Jenkinson said that the President is navigating a delicate “tightrope” between immigration enforcement and economic necessity. “If there was a large ICE raid on one of these farms or packing plants, a lot of that food production would come to a halt. I know of businesses locally that have already lost employees due to immigration status issues.”&nbsp;

Jenkinson added that the reality is stark: “Agriculture needs the workers, but legal American citizens often don't want to take those jobs—on farms or in beef packing plants.”&nbsp;

As summer temperatures rise and the Fourth of July approaches, a local veterinarian is urging pet owners to take extra precautions to protect their animals from heat, stress, and potential dangers.

Dr. Erica Miller of Apple Lane Animal Hospital says the combination of heat and humidity poses serious risks for pets, especially brachycephalic breeds — dogs with shorter snouts like bulldogs, Frenchies and shih tzus.

“If you're thirsty, they're thirsty,” said Miller. “These breeds already struggle to breathe normally, and in hot, humid weather, their risk for heat stroke increases dramatically.”

Miller advises pet owners to carry water for their animals when out in the heat, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and be mindful of how long pets are exposed to high temperatures.

She also warned against leaving pets in cars, even for a short time. “Even with windows cracked, temperatures can climb quickly and become dangerous,” she said.

Another seasonal hazard? Long-haired dogs with unkempt coats. While shaving pets can help some animals stay cool, Miller says proper grooming is more important than a full shave. “If the coat is clean and unmatted, it actually helps regulate temperature. But mats trap heat and can lead to overheating.”

Miller also cautioned against grass awns — seed-like barbs that can lodge in dogs’ paws and cause painful infections. “I’ve seen several cases this month alone,” she said. “If your dog has long hair on its feet, keep it trimmed and check regularly.”

Looking ahead to the Fourth of July, Miller emphasized that fireworks are a major source of stress and danger for pets. “It’s the number one day for lost pets,” she said. “Noise can scare them into bolting from the house or yard.”

Miller recommends creating a safe space indoors, preferably in a crate or quiet room. For pets with known anxiety, she urges owners to contact their veterinarian now — not the day before the holiday — to ask about calming medications.

“Veterinary offices are often closed on July 4, and we get a flood of panicked calls every year,” she said.

She also reminded pet owners to make sure their animals are microchipped and that their registration information is up to date — especially in light of some pet chip companies going out of business. “We don’t want to chip a pet twice,” she said. “If it scans, we can help get the info transferred to a current provider.”

Ultimately, Miller said preparation and awareness can prevent emergencies. “Know your pet. Know their limits. Plan ahead — that’s the best way to keep them safe this summer.”

 </figure>MARC JACOBS Hutch Post As summer temperatures rise and the Fourth of July approaches, a local veterinarian is urging pet owners to take extra precautions to protect their animals from heat, stress, and potential dangers.Dr. Erica Miller of Apple Lane Animal Hospital says the combination of heat and humidity poses serious risks for pets, especially brachycephalic breeds — dogs with shorter snouts like bulldogs, Frenchies and shih tzus.<figure>

 </figure>“If you're thirsty, they're thirsty,” said Miller. “These breeds already struggle to breathe normally, and in hot, humid weather, their risk for heat stroke increases dramatically.”Miller advises pet owners to carry water for their animals when out in the heat, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and be mindful of how long pets are exposed to high temperatures.She also warned against leaving pets in cars, even for a short time. “Even with windows cracked, temperatures can climb quickly and become dangerous,” she said.<figure>

 </figure>Another seasonal hazard? Long-haired dogs with unkempt coats. While shaving pets can help some animals stay cool, Miller says proper grooming is more important than a full shave. “If the coat is clean and unmatted, it actually helps regulate temperature. But mats trap heat and can lead to overheating.”Miller also cautioned against grass awns — seed-like barbs that can lodge in dogs’ paws and cause painful infections. “I’ve seen several cases this month alone,” she said. “If your dog has long hair on its feet, keep it trimmed and check regularly.”Looking ahead to the Fourth of July, Miller emphasized that fireworks are a major source of stress and danger for pets. “It’s the number one day for lost pets,” she said. “Noise can scare them into bolting from the house or yard.”Miller recommends creating a safe space indoors, preferably in a crate or quiet room. For pets with known anxiety, she urges owners to contact their veterinarian now — not the day before the holiday — to ask about calming medications.“Veterinary offices are often closed on July 4, and we get a flood of panicked calls every year,” she said.She also reminded pet owners to make sure their animals are microchipped and that their registration information is up to date — especially in light of some pet chip companies going out of business. “We don’t want to chip a pet twice,” she said. “If it scans, we can help get the info transferred to a current provider.”Ultimately, Miller said preparation and awareness can prevent emergencies. “Know your pet. Know their limits. Plan ahead — that’s the best way to keep them safe this summer.”

As Fourth of July festivities approach, the Hutchinson Fire Department is reminding residents of fireworks regulations and safety procedures during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.&nbsp;

Expanded sales period, but discharge rules Unchanged 

A recent change by the Kansas Legislature now allows year-round fireworks sales in fixed retail buildings, similar to neighboring states like Missouri and Oklahoma. For temporary retail stands—commonly set up in tents—the allowed sales period has also been extended by state law to run from June 20 through July 8. 

However, Fire Marshal Michael Cain emphasized that the discharge dates within Hutchinson remain the same: residents may only discharge fireworks from June 30 through July 4, between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. 

Cain outlined the multi-step inspection process required before a fireworks tent can open. Vendors must first secure a license from the State Fire Marshal before submitting a detailed application to the city, including a site plan, insurance, and contact information. 

“We make sure the tent is placed according to the plan, and that safety distances from buildings are maintained,” Cain said. After the structure and signage are installed, a final inspection is conducted before any fireworks can be sold.

Once tents are open, inspectors make at least two unannounced visits per day to ensure continued compliance. <h2>Discharge locations and safety precautions </h2>Discharging fireworks is permitted only on private property, and not on public streets or in parks without a special use permit. Cain emphasized that fireworks must be used in open spaces away from structures and combustible materials, with driveways being the safest option. “Years ago, people were allowed to use apartment or church parking lots with permission,” he noted. “But now, without a city-issued permit, it’s strictly limited to private property.” <h2>Proper disposal: A must to prevent fires&nbsp;</h2>Cain stressed the importance of safe disposal. He advised residents to soak used fireworks in water before placing them in the trash. “Don’t just sweep them up and throw them in the polycart. We’ve responded to house fires because people didn’t properly extinguish fireworks,” he warned. <h2>Fireworks stands rebounding after policy change</h2>Hutchinson has seen a resurgence in fireworks stand applications since reinstating aerial fireworks. This year, 11 stands are approved up from a low of just four or five during the period when only “safe and sane” fireworks were allowed. <figure>

 </figure><h2>Public displays get thorough oversight </h2>The city also plays a role in inspecting large public fireworks displays, including the annual show at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. “Even though the state licenses the providers, we still inspect the site, monitor setup, and ensure safety conditions like wind are appropriate,” Dowling said. “We’ve only had to cancel once due to weather in recent memory.” The Hutchinson Fire Department encourages all residents to enjoy the holiday responsibly and keep safety top of mind. “Fireworks are part of the fun,” said Cain “We want everyone to make it through the Fourth with good memories—not a visit from the fire department.”
