It didn't take long on Sunday for the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team to learn the 2021 season isn't over yet.

One day after falling in the Region VI Tournament championship game, the Blue Dragon players and coaches were together to watch the NJCAA Tournament Selection Show on Sunday evening at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson was the second team of 24 to pop up on the bracket as an at-large selection for the 2021 NJCAA Men's Division I National Tournament, which begins on Monday, April 19 at the Sports Arena.

The 2021 Jayhawk West champion and Region VI Tournament runner-up Blue Dragons will take an 18-6 record into the tournament and drew the No. 16 overall seed.

The Blue Dragons will take on 17th-seeded Kilgore College (18-5), the Region XIV champion in the tournament's first game at 10 a.m. on Monday April 19. The Hutchinson/Kilgore winner will take on the overall No. 1-seeded Mineral Area College Cardinals (23-0) at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the opening game of the second round.

This will be the second meeting between Hutchinson and Kilgore in NJCAA Tournament history. The first was the 1958 NJCAA Tournament semifinals. Kilgore won that match-up, 83-78. This year's opening-round matchup will be only fourth time the Blue Dragons and Rangers will play each other, the first time since January 3, 1995. The Dragons are 1-2 all-time against Kilgore.

The Blue Dragons will be making their 22nd overall NJCAA Tournament appearance, the first since 2018. The Blue Dragons have won three national championships in 1988, 1994 and 2017. Hutchinson has a 44-25 all-time NJCAA Tournament record.

Hutchinson will be making its sixth tournament appearance under head coach Steve Eck (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021).

This is the fourth time the Dragons earned a tournament berth as an at-large team. The Blue Dragons were the 2016 NJCAA Tournament runner-up. The Blue Dragons defeated Eastern Florida State 84-58 to win the 2017 national championship.

Hutchinson is one of three Jayhawk Conference teams to earn spots in the 24-team field.

The Region VI champion Cowley Tigers are the No 8 overall seed. Cowley will play the Trinity Valley-Brunswick winner at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the second round.

The Coffeyville Red Ravens are the No. 10 overall seed. The Ravens, who lost to Hutchinson 76-75 in the Region VI Tournament semifinals, play Southwest Tennessee at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

Blue Dragons earn NJCAA Tournament at-large bid

WICHITA – Hutchinson Community College sophomore distance runner Teagan Flanagan posted the third-fastest time in the 10,000 meters this season on Friday at the Friends University Spring Open.

Flanagan qualified for his second NJCAA Outdoor championships event by winning the Friends 10,000 meters in a time of 32:14.44. Flanagan won the race by a staggering 2 minutes, 35 seconds.

Flanagan’s time ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA this season and is the fourth-fastest 10,000-meter time in Blue Dragon outdoor track and field history.

Flanagan was just a handful of Blue Dragon athletes to compete on Day 1 of the two-day event. The majority of the meet at Friends’ Adair Austin Stadium starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Heartland Timing will provide live results.

Other Blue Dragons to place in the Top 8 of an event on Friday are:

+ Matthew Schrag was sixth in the men’s 10,000 meters with a time of 37:29.51.

+ Delaney Cameron was fifth in the men’s 3,000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 10:43.65.

+ Kiana Brown placed second in the women’s pole vault, clearing 10 feet.

+ Noel Hidalgo was fourth in the women’s 3,000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 13:31.06, a PR for Hidalgo and the 14th-best time in the NJCAA this season.

Flanagan qualifies for nationals in 10,000

The Hutchinson Community College softball team’s scheduled Jayhawk Conference doubleheader at Dodge City has been postponed, the teams announced late Friday night.

Hutchinson and Dodge City were supposed to have played at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday at Legends Park in Dodge City. Because of a late cancelation by one of the umpires, no replacement could be found.

The teams will make up the doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m. on Monday, April 19 at Legends Park in Dodge City.

Next up for the Blue Dragons is a home doubleheader on Thursday, April 15 against Seward County at Fun Valley.

HutchCC softball not playing Saturday, rescheduled for April 19

WICHITA – Over the final 19.4 seconds of Friday's Region VI Tournament semifinal game, the emotions of Hutchinson Community College forward&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/kuath_majok_xrls">Majok Kuath</a>&nbsp;went from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs.

And the result for the Jayhawk West champion and tournament top seed Blue Dragons means a berth in the Region VI Championship match on Saturday night.

Kuath hit a go-ahead shot with 1.2 seconds remaining in regulation to spur the Blue Dragons to a wild 76-75 semifinal victory over No. 5 Coffeyville on Friday at the Friends University's Garvey Center.

The victory bolstered the Blue Dragons' postseason resume and puts Hutchinson into its 29th Region VI Championship game. Hutchinson will play No. 15 Cowley at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Garvey Center. Cowley routed Barton 104-77 in the other men's semifinal on Friday.

Tied at 72,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/mayers_matt_jfk4">Matt Mayers</a>&nbsp;gave the Blue Dragons a 74-72 lead with 1:51 to play. After both teams traded defensive stops, Coffeyville's Tylor Perry drove to the hoop and was fouled with 19.4 seconds to play. Perry hit the first free throw and Hutchinson called a timeout.

After the timeout, Perry missed his second free-throw attempt. Kuath and Bostyn Holt both went for the rebound. Holt's tip attempt wasn't going to go in, but it did put the ball within the cylinder when Kuath touched the ball. Kuath was called for goaltending and Coffeyville led 75-74.

As Hutchinson's final possession unfolded, Mayers tried to get the ball to Kuath on the low block, but a Raven defender deflected the ball into the corner and Kuath hustled and save the ball from going out of bounds into the hands of&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/baker_josh_lpkm">Josh Baker</a>. Baker then tried a 3-point attempt from the right wing, which was partially deflected by Holt.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/bujdoso_isaiah_t7bk">Isaiah Bujdoso</a>&nbsp;went for the rebound, but knocked the ball into the hands of Kuath, who wildly spun to his right and banked in an eight-foot shot with 1.2 seconds to play to give the Blue Dragons a 76-75 lead.

That play was the 13th and final lead change of the game. Coffeyville's desperation heave from just outside half court was not close.

Baker led the Blue Dragons with 21 points, hitting 2 of 6 3-pointers. Baker jumped into the career Blue Dragon Top 10 for 3-pointers and is tied with Aaron Lashley for ninth with 108 made 3s. Baker also had five assists to lead the Blue Dragons.

Perry had 19 points to lead Coffeyville, which at 22-3 is in strong position for an NJCAA Tournament at-large bid. Holt had 14 points.

The Red Ravens shot 40.4 percent for the game (23 of 57), going 6 of 16 from 3-point range and 23 of 27 from the foul line.

The Blue Dragons shot 51.6 percent in the first half in building a 42-31 lead at halftime.

Trailing 13-12, a Mayers short jumper started a 16-5 Hutchinson run that pushed the Dragon lead to double figures for the first time at 28-18 on two&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/gabriel_stephen_ryjf">Stephan Gabriel</a>&nbsp;free throws with 8:14 to play in the half. The lead was pushed to 42-28 when Bujdoso sank a technical free throw with 1:58 to play in the half.

Kuath putback with 1.2 seconds left sends Dragons to Region VI Finals

WICHITA – The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team's 13th consecutive appearance in the Region VI Tournament semifinals was definitely an unlucky one on Friday.

Just one game after hitting a school-record 18 3-pointers in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, the Blue Dragon' offense struggled and Independence took advantage in a 75-56 semifinal win over the Blue Dragons and Friends University's Garvey Center.

Now the No. 20-ranked Blue Dragons will have to wait to see if their 19-5 overall record will be enough to receive one of the eight at-large bids to the NJCAA National Tournament in Lubbock. The NJCAA Selection Show is at 4 p.m. on Sunday on NJCAATV.com.

Independence (19-6) will play Barton for the Region VI championship on Saturday in Wichita.

The Blue Dragons started well jumping out to a 9-2 lead after a Nafatoumata basket with 5:25 to play in the first quarter.

After that point, the Blue Dragon offense went cold.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/gore_lojong_i68o">Lojong Gore</a>&nbsp;scored to stop a 7-0 Pirate run for a 9-7 lead. The Pirates closed the quarter on a 9-3 run to lead 16-12 after one period. The Dragons missed 13 of their final 15 shot attempts in the first quarter.

That trend continued through the second and third quarters. The Dragons were 2 of 13 shooting in the second period and trailed 33-19 at halftime, the 19 points tied a season low for points in a first half.

Independence then put the foot on the gas and put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring the Blue Dragons 24-13 in the third quarter. Independence hit 9 of 16 shot in the third quarter, including three 3-pointers. The Dragons were 4 of 12 in the third stanza and trailed 57-32 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hutchinson's 56-point output tied for the third lowest of the season. The Dragons shot only 30.5 percent (18 of 59) for the game, which was the second-lowest shot percentage of the season.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/alford_tor-e_j660">Tor'e Alford</a>&nbsp;scored 16 of her team-high 17 points in the second half. Alford was the only Blue Dragon to score in double figures on Friday.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/ervin_kalyn_foze">Kalyn Ervin</a>, K.K. Adams and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/suttington_ishante_gbs8">Ishante Suttington</a>&nbsp;finished with nine points each. Gore had eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons hit 8 of 30 3-point attempts and 12 of 20 from the free-throw line. The Dragons committed 19 turnovers and were out-rebounded 45-38.

Maisa Marcal had eight points to lead the Pirates, hitting 4 of 8 3-pointers. Delani Harris had 12 points and Miriam Bazylewicz had 11.

The Pirates shot 41.3 percent from the floor (26 of 63), going 8 of 23 from distanced and 15 of 20 from the free-throw line.

Kan. — Greater Hutch, an Economic Development Partnership for Reno County, is collaborating with Hutchinson Community College and Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy to introduce two new workforce initiatives that will enhance technical educational training opportunities for our local youth.&nbsp; Limited sponsorship opportunities are available for both programs.

Signing Day, the first of these two new initiatives, will take place Thursday, May 6&nbsp;at HCTEA.&nbsp;Just as we value athletes who commit to play a college sport, the signing day ceremony is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field and emphasize the importance of their career choice. On the day of the event, high school students, parents, instructors, administration, counselors, industry partners, and potential employers will celebrate as students join their peers to commit to their future technical program pathway of choice.

“Our training partners at HCTEA and HCC deliver the best in technical training and we want their students to feel excited and valued for their commitment to training that will serve them in their future careers,” said Lacie Janzen, Economic Development Manager for Greater Hutch.&nbsp; “Signing Day will give students the opportunity to be celebrated for their decision to enter these career fields.”

The second new initiative being launched is the 'FAST Track' Program, standing for Future Apprenticeship Success Training.&nbsp; This newly created program is a&nbsp;Manufacturing Skills Boot Camp for area graduating senior students in Reno, McPherson, and Harvey counties.&nbsp; It will take place June 1-11, Monday through Friday from 7am to 4pm, with a second Boot Camp running the following two&nbsp;weeks&nbsp;starting June 14&nbsp;based on demand.&nbsp; The bootcamp will include classroom and lab training with topics&nbsp;such as:&nbsp; Shop Math, Blueprint Reading, Precision Measurement, OSHA 10 Safety, and Work Ethics.

Powered by a dominant first half, the Region VI Tournament top-seeded Blue Dragons defeated the Independence Pirates 93-74 in the Region VI Tournament quarterfinals at the Sports Arena to post the program's 200th all-time postseason victory.

The Blue Dragons are now 200-80 all-time in postseason play, including 139-49 all-time in the Region VI Tournament. Over his first 400 games on the Blue Dragon bench, Eck is now 325-75.

The Dragons shot 48.6 percent in the first half and held the Pirates to 25.7 percent from the floor, including 2 of 8 from 3-point range in the first half. Independence hit 16 3-pointers in a 79-77 regular-season Blue Dragon win over the Pirates in February in Independence.

Blue Dragon Men oust Indy for 200th all-time postseason win

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team's 13th-straight Region VI Tournament quarterfinal victory featured a couple of career highs by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/alford_tor-e_j660">Tor'e Alford</a>&nbsp;and two single-game school records going down.

The Blue Dragons used a school-record 18 3-pointers to defeat the Cowley Tigers 84-64 on Wednesday at the Sports Arena to advance to Friday's Region VI semifinals. The top-seeded Blue Dragons (19-4) will play Independence (18-6), which defeated Seward County on Wednesday in Independence.

That game will be played at Noon on Friday at Friends University in Wichita.

Hutchinson hit 18 of 36 3-point attempts against the Tigers, who finish their season at 15-8. The 18 3-pointers break the 2015 record of 16 3-pointers against Neosho County on November 30, 2015 and tied this season against the Bethany College JV on opening night back on January 22.

Six different Blue Dragons hit 3-pointers against Cowley with a career-high eight treys in 10 attempts from Alford, who also finished with a career-high 26 points to lead Hutchinson. This was Alford's ninth career game with four or more 3-pointers in a single game.

The other Blue Dragon single-game record to fall came from freshman K.K. Adams, who dished out a record 15 assists. That broke the 1988 record of Staci Unruh of 14 assists, which was tied by Inja Butina in 2016. The Blue Dragons had 27 assists on 31 makes on Wednesday, which tied a team season high.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/ervin_kalyn_foze">Kalyn Ervin</a>&nbsp;had a career-high four 3-pointers for the second-straight game to finish with 14 points for the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/suttington_ishante_gbs8">Ishante Suttington</a>&nbsp;was the third Dragon to score in double figures with 12.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/haidara_nafatoumata_7n3l">Nafatoumata Haidara</a>&nbsp;had nine points.

The Blue Dragons shot 49.3 percent for the game (31 of 63) overall and 4 of 8 from the free-throw line. The Dragons were out-rebounded 37-33, but limited their turnovers to 11.

The Tigers shot 38.9 percent from the floor (21 of 54) for the game. Cowley hit 11 of 18 shots in the first half, but was limited to 10 of 36 overall in the final two quarters.

Held to two points in the regular-season matchup against the Blue Dragons, Seanna Boltz hit four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points to lead Cowley. Baylee Fincher and Martyna Kowalska had nine points each.

The Tigers were 6 of 16 from 3-point range and 16 of 26 from the free-throw line.

The Blue Dragons hit five first-quarter 3-pointers to build a 23-15 lead after 10 minutes. Hutchinson had a 10-point lead in the opening period when Alford nailed a 3 for a 23-13 lead with 1:15 to play. The Tigers stayed close with seven free throws in the first quarter.

Blue Dragon Women blitz Cowley with season record 18  3-pointers

Kan. — Hutchinson High School soccer player Josie Hallier announced on Facebook she has signed a letter of intent to continue her career at Butler Community College.

Hallier is one of two Salthawk girls soccer players to score at least 20 goals in a season. 

Hallier has found the back of the net 38 times in 39 high school contests, with six career hat tricks. 

Hallier's parents are Brad and Jennifer Hallier.

Playing against a packed-in defense and a strong north wind, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team completed victory No. 1 of the spring 2021 season with a 4-0 Jayhawk Conference victory.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/dickinson_lani_tr96">Lani Dickinson</a>&nbsp;had a goal and an assist to lead a Blue Dragon attack that dominated possession all game long with the Broncbusters. Hutchinson out-shot Garden 'city 39-0 with 11 shots on goal.

Dickinson's goal and assist game just 21 seconds apart late in a three-goal first half the finally gave the Blue Dragons some breathing room.

Leading 1-0 in the 44th minute, Dickinson found herself with a clear lane to shoot from about 35 yards out and she hammered a shot over Garden City keeper Kelcie Turner for a 2-0 Hutchinson lead. Just 21 seconds later, Dickinson delivered a cross from the right corner. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/ontjes_madison_u1tk">Madison Ontjes</a>&nbsp;redirected the pass into the goal with a header and a 3-0 Hutchinson lead.

With a short-handed Garden City team playing 10 players behind the ball, the Blue Dragons controlled possession but were coming up with few scoring chances. Finally, in the 17th minute, Hutchinson broke through when&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/stuenkel_chiara_ugv4">Chiara Stuenkel</a>&nbsp;took a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/ramirez_jennifer_fq3u">Jennifer Ramirez</a>&nbsp;cross and scored her third goal of the season with a header for a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Dragons had one goal going against the wind in the second half. After a crazy scramble in front of the Garden City goal, Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/maher_aimee_51ht">Aimee Maher</a>&nbsp;scored her first career marker with a point-blank shot for a 4-0 lead in the 67th minute.

This was the 29th time in program history that the Blue Dragons held an opponent without a shot taken, the seventh time against Garden City. The Blue Dragons own a 26-0 all-time record against the Broncbusters.

Now 1-1-1 (4 points), the Blue Dragons play host to nationally ranked Butler at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

HutchCC Soccer team wins home opener

The 2021 Jayhawk West champion Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team will open the Region VI Tournament Wednesday with a quarterfinal matchup against the Independence Pirates at 7:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson's first postseason game of 2021 will be the 400th game on the Blue Dragon bench for head coach Steve Eck, who is in his 12th season.

Already the program's winningest head coach, Eck is 324-75 at Hutchinson, including a 37-13 record in the postseason. Eck just coached his third Hutchinson team to a conference championship, the 37th in program history.

After receiving an opening-round bye, the Blue Dragons will begin their 70th postseason run on Wednesday. The Blue Dragons are 43-11 in the Region VI Quarterfinal round.

Hutchinson will be in search of its 200th all-time postseason victory on Wednesday.

It was a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/mayers_matt_jfk4">Matt Mayers</a>' follow shot with 0.7 seconds to play that lifted the Blue Dragons to a 79-77 win over Independence on February 10 in Independence, the only meeting of the season between the Blue Dragons and Pirates.

The Blue Dragons had to survive 16 Independence 3-pointers to win the game. Mayers had 20 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/kuath_majok_xrls">Majok Kuath</a>&nbsp;had 19 to pace the Blue Dragons. Tim Dalger had 17 points for the Pirates.

Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup will be the 21st Region VI Tournament meeting between Hutchinson and Independence. The Blue Dragons lead the postseason series 14-6. Pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/galliher_jordan_2rxp">Jordan Galliher</a>&nbsp;became just the second pitcher of the modern era to throw multiple no-hitters in a career as the Hutchinson Community College second-year pitcher no-hit the Northwest Tech Mavericks in the first game of a Jayhawk Conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Fun Valley.

Galliher's gem helped the Blue Dragons snap a six-game KJCCC losing streak as Hutchinson won the opener 8-0 in five innings. The Blue Dragons defeated Northwest Tech 11-6 in Game 2.

Hutchinson won its third and fourth games in a row to improve to 16-12 overall and returned to the .500 mark in the Jayhawk East at 6-6. Northwest Tech falls to 2-26 and 1-9.

Galliher's first career no-hitter came on February 9, 2009 when she orchestrated a perfect game against the Allen Red Devils in her collegiate pitching debut. Galliher joins Holly Kelly, who threw two no-hitters in 2016 – including a perfect game against Hesston College – as the only Blue Dragon pitchers in the modern era, which dates back to since the 2004 season, to have multiple career no-hitters.

Galliher's second masterpiece is the seventh no-hitter in the Jaime Rose era.

Galliher (7-2) struck out a career-high 11 batters against Northwest Tech on Tuesday, striking out the side in the fifth inning. She allowed only two walks, both coming after the fourth inning.

Galliher allowed just four baserunners over her five-inning no-no.

The game started when Hailey Allen reached on a two-base throwing error. Galliher worked out of that with a great diving catch in foul territory by third baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/bevan_natalie_gq93">Natalie Bevan</a>&nbsp;and a pair of strikeouts. Galliher retired nine batters in a row until a leadoff walk to Sarah Hembree in the fourth.

A walk and fielder's choice with one out in the fifth had Galliher in her only tough spot of the game. The Blue Dragon pitcher got back-to-back strikeouts to close out the game and secure the no-hitter.

Hutchinson had 10 hits total in Game 1 led by Hailey Miller's two bunt singles. Head and Way also had two hits in the opener. Grimes, Head and Way had two RBIs each.

GAME 2 RECAP The second game was much more of a grind for the Blue Dragons as Hutchinson finally created some breathing room with a five-run sixth inning.

Before that, freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/loney_sadie_l7nj">Sadie Loney</a>&nbsp;had to come out of the Blue Dragon bullpen to battle a resurgent Maverick offense, which had six hits and three earned runs off starter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/bailey_samarah_si6w">Samarah Bailey</a>. Loney entered the game with two out in the third of a 3-3 game with the go-ahead run at third base. Loney struck out Katherine Range to end the inning. She allowed a fourth-inning run and then retired seven-straight Mavericks to reach the seventh.

After three-straight doubles to start the seventh, Loney gave way to Galliher, who shut down the Tech threat with a lineout and back-to-back strikeouts.

Loney (2-0) worked 3 1-3 innings with three strikeouts to earn the victory in the pitching circle. She gave up five hits and three earned runs.

Offensively, the Blue Dragons out-hit Northwest Tech 13-11 in Game 2.

Miller had three more bunt singles and scored a pair of runs.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/williams_lexi_p2uv">Lexi Williams</a>&nbsp;was 2 for 3 with two runs and a stolen base. Grimes went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a steal of home in the third inning give the Blue Dragons a 5-3 lead.

Bevan also went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. She led off the bottom of the fifth with her fifth home run of the season for a 6-4 lead. Bevan also had a two-run double in Hutch's five-run sixth.

The Blue Dragons travel to Pratt on Thursday.

Galliher twirls 2nd career no-hitter in Blue Dragon sweep

Richard A. (Dick) Woodall was born September 20, 1925 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Lester V. Woodall and Maureen (Concannon) Woodall.&nbsp; He passed Saturday April 03, 2021 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.

He was a graduate of Hutchinson High School in 1943.&nbsp; Like many of his generation Dick served in the United States Army serving in the Army Air Corps.&nbsp; After his honorable discharge, he proceeded with a post-secondary education and met Helen Franklin at Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; They were married July 20, 1947 in Hutchinson, Kansas. His college education continued at Pittsburg State College graduating in 1951.&nbsp; He later earned a master’s degree in Counseling from Fort Hays University.&nbsp; A career as an educator and Coach in Kansas began in 1951 at Haven and then Paradise, WaKeeney, Wheatland High School, Ness City and Hutchinson Community College.

Throughout his life Dick loved music and especially Barbershop music. He was a member of several Barbershop Quartets and was active in choruses as well for over 70 years.&nbsp; In addition to music, his interests included athletics, especially basketball, golf and lake activities. His favorite times were with family especially 7 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Following a career in education Dick began a second career in Financial Planning and Life Insurance with Waddell and Reed, Edward D. Jones and Principal Financial Group.
