HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College athletic department released the fall sports schedule including volleyball, football, women's soccer and cross country, plus the women's and men's basketball schedule.

Volleyball starts it off with a tournament at Iowa Western on Aug. 20.&nbsp; Blue Dragon football will begin defending its National Championship with a road trip to Coffeyville on Sept. 4. Women's soccer will open on Sept. 1 and cross country will get underway on Sept. 3. Basketball will get underway on Nov. 2 and 3.

HutchCC releases fall schedules including basketball

The 2021 national champion Hutchinson Community College men's golf team had another first in program history on Friday with the naming of two players to the 2021 All-Nicklaus Team.

Ben Partridge and Harry Crockett were the first two Blue Dragon player ever named to the All-Nicklaus team, which is compiled by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Partridge and Crockett are part of an elite 24-man team comprised of players from all three NCAA levels, NJCAA Division I and Division II and the NAIA.

The All-Nicklaus Team recognizes the outstanding play for the 2021 collegiate season.

Partridge and Crockett definitely had outstanding seasons in their first year in the Blue Dragon program.

Both were part of Hutchinson's first NJCAA Team national championship, which it won in May in Lubbock, Texas. Both were finalists for the Nicklaus Player of the Year Award and the Mickelson Most Outstanding Freshman of the Year. Both were Hutchinson's first two NJCAA first-team All-Americans in program history.

After clinching the team national title, the Blue Dragon duo freshmen played each other in a four-hole playoff to decide the 2021 NJCAA Individual national champion – won by Partridge with a birdie putt on the fourth hole.

Partridge – The Nicklaus Award and Mickelson Award winner – had a season stroke average of 71.2 over 29 rounds played over the combined fall and spring seasons. Over the final three tournaments in 2021 – the KJCCC Championship, District III/Region VI and the NJCAA Championship – Partridge averaged 70.8 strokes per round with 7 of 10 rounds shot under par.

In addition to winning the NJCAA Individual title, Partridge won the NJCAA National Preview, also at The Rawls Course in Lubbock – site of the 2021 national championships. He was Jayhawk Conference regular-season co-champion with teammate Charlie Crockett.

Partridge had two tournament titles, six Top-3 finishes and placed in the Top 10 in 9 of 10 total tournaments this season.

Crockett earned two individual tournament championships this season – the District III/Region VI crown and at Jayhawk Conference No. 2. Crockett also had five Top-3 performances and eight Top-10 finishes in 2020-21.

Crockett had a season-stroke average of 71.6 for the season with 17 rounds under par. Over the final three tournaments of 2021, Crockett shot an average of 70.1.

Crockett placed third in the 2021 Jayhawk Conference regular-season standings.

The All-Nicklaus Team was created in 2008, and is not only named for history's greatest player, Jack Nicklaus, but also to pay tribute to his long-time support of collegiate and amateur golf. Nicklaus, a Big Ten and NCAA Champion at Ohio State University, helped inspire and create the Jack Nicklaus Award in 1988 and it is now presented to the National Player of the year in NCAA Divisions I, II and III, as well as NAIA and NJCAA. Award recipients have combined for over 200 victories worldwide and claimed 23 major championships.

Barbara A. Janette, 87, of Hutchinson, died July 28, 2021, at her home. She was born December 18, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, to Cecil and Georgette (Schneider) Graham.

Barbara graduated from Byrd High School in 1950, in Shreveport, Louisiana and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Louisiana Technical College. She worked as a machinist for 23 years at Eaton Corporation. Barbara was a member of Temple Baptist Church. For many years she loved sewing and flowers. More than anything, Barbara loved her family.

On May 12, 1956, she married Jerry K. Janette in Shreveport, Louisiana. They shared 25 years together before he passed away on December 16, 1981.

Barbara is survived by: son, Mike Janette, Hutchinson; son, John Shasco (Sharon), Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughter, Renee Goering (Terry), Hutchinson; daughter, Brigid Janette, Hutchinson; daughter, Gwen Hagan (Guy), Garden Plain; Jenipher Petroski (Steven), Springfield, New Jersey; daughter, Sally Owen (Chris), Hutchinson; son, Jay Janette (Tonja), Seattle, Washington; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Jerry Janette; and son, David Wayne Janette.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary with Pastor Matt Stafford officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department's school supply drive is going on the next two weekends.

"We'd like to repay the citizens for everything they do for us," said Fire Marshal Tony Arpin. "During the big grass fires and things like that, they drop off water and food for us and this is kind of our way of giving back to the community and thanking them for all the support."

Hutchinson Fire sees all of Reno County as its community in this endeavor.

"We helped every Hutch school, we helped Nickerson grade school, South Hutchinson grade school, we took stuff to Haven, to the school in Yoder," Arpin said. "I even took a truckload of supplies to Fairfield. It's not just Hutchinson schools. We'll help everybody here in Reno County that we absolutely can."

The fire department will be at the Dillons store on E 5th, the Dillons Marketplace on E 30th, and Walmart collecting donated school supplies. Collection dates are Friday, July 30 from 4 until 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 31 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. A second round of donations will be taken Friday, August 6 from 4 until 8 p.m. and Saturday August 7 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

"We try to get the supplies to the teachers before the first day of school, that way, we're not in the way the first or second day of school," Arpin said. 

Donated items can also be dropped off at Hutchinson fire stations, the command and training center on E 4th Avenue, the three RCB Bank locations in Hutchinson and at Allen Samuels CDJR. 

Requested items include, but are not limited to:

Binders (zip-up or regular, 1.5 inch preferred)

Composition notebooks/lined notebook paper

Hutch Fire supply drive helps all county schools

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College is offering a class for those who are interested in getting into the field of road construction.

The class which is a collaboration with KDOT will teach basic safety, communication skills, construction math, material handling and how to read construction drawings. The class runs for seven weeks and will be taught at the Hutchinson campus.

Students must be over 18 and the class is free to all qualified participants and class size is limited.

Hutchinson Community College Cosmetology will be hosting its annual Back to School Haircut Day August 16 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm at the school’s center at 200 E. 3rd Ave., Hutchinson.

Children in Pre-K through grade 12 are eligible for a free haircut to be performed by HutchCC cosmetology students and volunteer cosmetologists and barbers. No appointment is necessary; haircuts will be done on a first come, first served basis.

“This day is a highlight of the year for us and our students,” stated Alex Hass, HutchCC’s Cosmetology Program Coordinator. “We missed not being able to offer this service last year and are excited to help those in our community prepare for the upcoming school year.”

He was born in Chicago, Illinois  to James and Clara (German) Lewis. He married Kimberly (Harms Gadberry) in 1991. He lived in Kansas and Arizona. He attended and was a graduate of Newton High School and Vatterott College. He worked for Walmart and PPMA.  He enjoyed fishing, camping and family time.

He was preceded in death by both parents, step-father, uncle James German and grandparents.

Murray L. Stucky, 67, of rural Moundridge, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.  He was born October 30, 1953, in Newton, Kansas, the son of Marvin H. and Florene (Gehring) Stucky.

He graduated from Sterling College with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.  Murray was a computer programmer in Hutchinson, Kansas.

He is survived by his brother, Steve Stucky of Galva; sister, Charlotte Schmucker of Abbyville; nephew, Jonathan (Ericah) Schmucker; and great-nephews, Christian and Ethan Schmucker.

He was born October 30, 1953, in Newton, Kansas, the son of Marvin H. and Florene (Gehring) Stucky.He graduated from Sterling College with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. Murray was a computer programmer in Hutchinson, Kansas.He is survived by his brother, Steve Stucky of Galva; sister, Charlotte Schmucker of Abbyville; nephew, Jonathan (Ericah) Schmucker; and great-nephews, Christian and Ethan Schmucker.Murray was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Larry Schmucker.Arrangements are pending and will be announced later.

We want them to have the opportunity to have the advantage of taking early college and career, tech ed classes, we partner closely with Hutchinson Community College, just like the other area high schools, with their Step Ahead program."

Central State Academy is also available for those who may have struggled to catch up.

"Our curriculum and our staff really work well to help students," File said. "The way the program is set up is that if a student is struggling with a concept and is unable to pass that unit lesson, the program will take them back through help videos and help reteach those concepts that they missed and then give them another exam to test them in a different way."

Hayden Bret Cook, 27, of Hutchinson, passed away July 19, 2021, in his home.  He was born December 12, 1993, in Hutchinson, to Darran and Susan (Bird) Cook.

Hayden graduated from Buhler High School in 2012 and then attended Hutchinson Community College. He was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, in Hutchinson. Hayden played football for Buhler and continued to be involved with the program after high school by taking stats at the games. He loved sports and was passionate about his teams, including: the Chiefs, Jayhawks, Royals, Blue Dragons, and Buhler Crusaders. Hayden also enjoyed fishing, golfing, and his dog, Lucy.

Rodger Carson Kelso died July 21, 2021 in Houston, Texas.&nbsp; He was born May 13, 1949 in Lyons Kansas, the youngest son of Raymond and Jessie (Raulston) Kelso.&nbsp; Rodger was raised in Chase, Kansas and graduated from Chase High School and Hutchinson Junior College before relocating to Houston, Texas in 1972 to attend Mortuary College.&nbsp; He spent over 30 years in Funeral Service in the Houston area and after retirement, began a new career in Landscape Design until the time of his death.&nbsp; Rodger was a great lover of music. He collected record albums and books; was an avid wild mushroom hunter; grower of orchids, and loved to cook and enjoy fine wines.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers: James, Darrell, Millard, and Leon.&nbsp; He is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friend Frank H. Mahy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Vada Jewell Lieurance Call left her home in Eureka, Kansas on July 13, 2021 to reunite with her husband, Robert “Pat” Call, who had been awaiting her arrival since February 12, 2003. She is now dancing as much as her heart desires as they celebrate their belated 72nd&nbsp;wedding anniversary, which was July 4, and her 91st&nbsp;birthday, upcoming on August 5th.

Those who are thrilled she is dancing again, but saddened by her departure include daughter Terri Call of Eureka, daughter Linda Bock and husband Richard of Lebanon, Kansas, and granddaughter Amy Call of Wichita, Kansas. Additionally, she leaves behind seven nieces and nephews as well as many great nieces and nephews whose company and conversation she enjoyed as often as possible.

On a Saturday night, you might have found Vada camping at Fall River, listening to Pat play guitar at the V.F.W, or baking her signature breads and pies for a Sunday family gathering.&nbsp; After her retirement from Call Retail Liquor in Eureka, she also enjoyed making beaded Victorian lampshades, relaxing with her beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Baby and watching NBA and college basketball, particularly her favorite KU Jayhawks.

Vada previously resided in Hutchinson and Burrton and worked at several different cafes and restaurants, including the Hutchinson Town Club. She also worked at R.L. Polk for many years and gained cherished friends from the hours spent in those workplaces. &nbsp;

She was preceded by her parents, Florence and Olda Lieurance, brothers Verle and Ervin Lieurance and many other treasured family members.

Per her final wishes, a private family service was held and she was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka. Memorials may be sent to the Kansas Humane Society or the charity of your choice in her honor.

The 2021 national champion Hutchinson Community College men's golf team earned another major award on Wednesday as head coach Chris Young earned a second National Coach of the Year Award.

The Golf Coaches' Association of America (GCAA) named Young the 2021 NJCAA Division I Dave Williams National Coach of the Year after the veteran Blue Dragon mentor guided his team to team and individual national championships in May.

Each year the GCAA names the Williams Coach of the Year Award in each of the three NCAA Divisions, NJCAA Division I and Division II and NAIA.

Young was also named the Delnor Poss NJCAA Division I Coach of the Year in May.

On May 13, the Blue Dragons completed a nine-stroke victory over Odessa College to capture the program's first NJCAA National Championship in men's golf. Also, Young then watched two of his freshmen – Ben Partridge and Harry Crockett – duel in a playoff for the individual NJCAA championship. That was won by Partridge on the fourth playoff hole.

Partridge and Crockett became Hutchinson golf's first two first-team NJCAA All-Americans and freshman Cameron Rios-Ceballos was a third-team All-American with a 13th-place national showing. Partridge was also named the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman of the Year and Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year. Partridge, Crockett and Charlie Crockett were named PING All-Americans as well.

While winning the national championship was the overriding storyline to the 2020-21 Blue Dragons, there was so much more that Young's team achieved this past season.

Going back the fall season, the Blue Dragons decimated scoring records on the same Rawls Course where they raised the national championship trophy, breaking records for team scores for 18 holes (270), 36 holes (475), 54 holes (828) and tournament margin of victory (45 strokes).

When the spring season rolled around, the Blue Dragons raised the bar even higher.

A team victory at the Texas A&amp;M-Commerce Lion Classic started what turned into a six-tournament win streak capped by the NJCAA Championship victory.

The Blue Dragons won all three Jayhawk Conference-designated tournaments and captured the District III/Region VI championships. Ben Partridge and Charlie Crockett tied as KJCCC individual champion and Harry Crockett captured the District/Region individual crown.

Young has been the Blue Dragon head coach for 22 seasons. Over that span, the Blue Dragons have:

+ 20 consecutive NJCAA Tournament appearances;

+ 9 Jayhawk Conference team championships (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021);

Alan Earl Wellman was born to Richard Gale and Myrtle Belden Wellman on January 4, 1959, in Sterling Kansas. Alan attended Lyons Grade School and graduated from Sterling High School in 1977. He attended Hutchinson Community College and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1992. By the time Alan was six, he wanted to make music and, for over 50 years, that’s just what he did. A Beatlemaniac from the start, he could perform any Beatles tune. He was a very accomplished guitarist and played with many bands in central Kansas and Kansas City over the years: Ozone, The Shapes, Film @ 11, and X-Ray Glasses. He most enjoyed being featured at the Surf Ballroom’s Winter Dance Party in Clear Lake, IA, the annual memorial to Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and Jiles Richardson. Alan was a member of the Hole in the Wall Gang and enjoyed several years of trail rides and campfire songs in the Wyoming Tetons, as well as the Gang’s annual entry in the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Denver. Alan married June Goering on July 5, 1984, in Pretty Prairie, KS. They later divorced. Alan married Lora Lee Stewart on October 25, 2005, in Marble Hill, Missouri. They later divorced. Alan was co-owner of JasTax Services and was employed by Process Equipment and Controls, both of Olathe. In 2019, Alan returned to Sterling. Recently, he suffered two severe strokes, was hospitalized, then transferred to the Good Samaritan Home in Lyons, where he was under the care of Serenity Hospice. He died on July 17, 2021. Alan has been preceded in death by his parents; his nephew, Jesse Wellman; his cousin, Alice Wellman Mattson, and her husband, Royce Mattson. Alan is survived by his significant other, Susan Reed; his siblings Emily Wellman of Alden; Greg Wellman of Sterling, and Brad Wellman of Alden; his nephew, Jesse’s, widow, Karen Wellman and their three children of Holton, and his nephews John (Carrie) Wellman and their three children of Alden, Michael (Susan) Wellman and their daughter of Hutchinson, and Brody Wellman of Wichita. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, August 14, at the Sterling Reformed Presbyterian Church followed by a social gathering.  A private family burial will be at Sterling Community Cemetery at a later date.

Kan. — Kansas Democrat State Rep. Jason Probst sees the teaching about the differences in the treatment of the races in school as something that has been done for a long time.

"In my opinion, the talk about Critical Race Theory has become the new bogeyman that we're trying to scare people with," Probst said. "Critical Race Theory is really, that specifically, is a high-level college course that's mostly taught to attorneys, so that they can examine whether our systems have internal biases built into them. When I talk about it, I say it's really nothing more than an examination of how people of color are treated in our country, through the systems that we have put up."

Probst argues that American literature has hit on these themes for decades.

"When you read To Kill A Mockingbird, Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer, you're effectively examining Critical Race Theory," Probst said. "Those books had elements in them that talked about the way minorities are treated and have historically been treated in this country, the systems that have been, where people of color weren't thought of when the systems were developed and those books, old movies, what was the famous movie, Look Who's Coming To Dinner, those are all examinations of how the majority interacts with the minority in this country. I think the idea that this is some new, radical thing that's out to undermine the country is really just a lot of political hackery that's trying to get people riled up."

Probst believes continued examination of the issues is warranted.

Self-examination is important," Probst said. "I think, if we have a group of people saying to us, we don't feel like the system has worked for us, then I think it's important to examine that and see if there are changes that can be made that would equalize that or bring people in to the economy, to bring people in to the protection of the Constitution and make sure that we're including as many people as we can into our systems, so that we have the most robust participation that we can."

Probst is now <a href="https://thatguyinhutch.substack.com/">writing on Substack</a> about larger issues, as well as some deeper dives into local policy on occasion.

Probst: Thinking about racial differences not new

A group looking at Kansas graduation requirements is still relatively early in the process.

"Their goal is to have recommendations developed by the end of next spring, basically to take proposals to the State Board of Education next summer," said Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards.

The group will have to weigh several things when shaping requirement recommendations.

"What should every student who graduates have and know?", Tallman asked. "What's kind of the minimum that we want every student to have, balanced with how much flexibility or how much variation should be allowed based on different students interests? I think the dilemma is, both of those are important."

It's also hard because if you tailor graduation requirements to specific non college preparatory credentials, then if the student decides they want to go on to college, it may be difficult for them to do so, or conversely, if they thought they were interested in college, then they might have to take additional time to get a skills-based credential that they could have had straight out of high school if they had made different earlier choices.

"How can we make education seem more relevant?" Tallman asked. "How can we make it seem more personalized? How do we ensure that students have the skills that employers and parents and others are saying they want, that in many cases aren't related to academics?"

Agreement about what goals are, how they are measured and who is accountable will be the policy questions that the group hopes to answer as they make their recommendations.

The Hutchinson Community College athletic department had a very successful season on the field and court in 2020-21. The same can be said for in the classroom.

Blue Dragon Athletics had 60 individual athletes recognized by the NJCAA for their academic achievements in the 2020-21 athletic/academic season.

Eighteen Blue Dragons earned first-team NJCAA All-Academic honors with grade-point averages of 4.00. That number was up two athletes from 2020. Also, the overall number of Blue Dragon athletes to earn all-academic awards were up 20 athletes from one year ago.

The Blue Dragons had 18 first-team, 16 second team and 26 third-team all-academic athletes this season.

To earn a spot on the second team, a student-athlete must have a GPA between 3.80 and 3.99. To earn third-team all-academic status, athletes must carry a GPA of 3.60-3.79.

In addition to the individual honors, eight Blue Dragon teams posted aggregate GPAs of 3.00 or better this season. Blue Dragon Softball had the highest team GPA of all HutchCC teams at 3.44. Blue Dragon Volleyball was right behind at 3.40.

Other HutchCC teams recognized were Women’s Soccer (3.26), women’s indoor track and field (3.26), women’s outdoor track and field (3.26), Men’s Golf (3.25), Baseball (3.09) and Men’s Cross Country (3.01).

Sixty Blue Dragons earn NJCAA All-Academic honors in 2020-21

Ebba Jean Nelson, 93, of Marquette, Kansas, passed away at 12:58 p.m. Tuesday, July 13th, 2021 while in the company of her family at Riverview Estates.

Ebba was born in McPherson, Kansas on July 7, 1928, daughter of Ralph E. and Nellie M. (Borders) Spohn.

Ebba attended Windom grade school and graduated from Windom High School, Windom Kansas in 1942 at the age of 14. She then attended McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas and Adela Hale Business School, Hutchinson, Kansas.

Ebba enjoyed bowling, KU basketball, KC Royals and Chiefs, an avid basketball fan, loved Marquette High School Sports, quilting, needle work, crossword puzzles and spending time with her family and friends.

Ebba was a member of the Marquette American Legion Auxiliary for 60 years and Eastern Star member for 75 years.

Ebba Jean Spohn was united in marriage to Louis Alfred "Blackie" Nelson on Oct. 26, 1952. This union was blessed with the birth of four sons, Barry, Mo, Linn and Kale.

She is survived by her children, Barry Nelson and his wife Carylee, of Marquette, Kansas, Mo Nelson and his wife Gayle, of Marquette, Kansas, Linn Nelson and his wife Lou, of Marquette, Kansas and Kale Nelson and his wife Kelly, of Fort Scott, Kansas.

She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Ebba was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Leo Spohn; her sister Eula Spohn and her grandchildren Sam Nelson, Kyler and Katelyn Nelson.

Memorial service will be held on July 24, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette, Kansas with Rev. Amy Kay Pavlovich officiating.
