HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police Chief Hooper swore in four new members to the HPD family during a ceremony held at the law enforcement center. It includes officer Manuel Luna.

Luna is a 2012 Hutchinson High School graduate who studied criminal justice at Hutchinson Community College.

Animal Shelter Technician Zane Nichols, Animal Shelter Associate Mindy Stringer and Police Service Aide Shyanne Henkis were also sworn in Friday.

Four new HPD employees sworn in

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — U.S. Sens. Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded Reno County nearly $200,000 to build up emergency medical services in rural communities. Recruitment and retention of quality personnel is the No. 1 issue facing EMS today.

“EMS technicians are vital in providing pre-hospital treatment, and their level of care often is the difference between life and death,” Sen. Marshall said. “In addition to emergency incidents, EMS providers are facing other public health issues, such as COVID-19, illegal and prescription drug misuse, and mental health crises. Increased training and other proactive measures will help these health care heroes improve their skillsets and reduce burnout.”

“Too often rural communities lack access to resources that treat mental health and substance abuse disorders,” Sen. Moran said. “This grant will better equip EMS technicians to identify and handle mental health and substance abuse emergencies, consequently saving lives. Additionally, this grant invests in the mental health of our emergency responders to make certain they are receiving the resources necessary to protect their own mental health.”

“The Rural EMS Training Grant will be very helpful in addressing the training needs of EMS providers in Reno County and provide opportunities to bolster the number of providers with our rural EMS agencies. The grant will be used to provide comprehensive education on behavioral health emergencies and address the substance abuse crisis impacting our rural community. The grant funding will used to provide continuing education to existing EMS providers and scholarships will be available for EMT classes to recruit new providers. The grant will allow us to take these essential steps to retain and recruit quality EMS providers to our community,” EMS Chief Dave Johnston said.&nbsp;

The Rural Emergency Medical Services Training Grant, funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, aims to recruit and train EMS personnel in rural areas. Specifically, Reno County EMS will use the funds to recruit and train quality EMS providers focusing on addressing mental health and substance use disorders in emergency settings. The grant aims to address increasing rates of substance use disorders, fatal overdoses and mental health crises.

Reno County EMS will leverage various health care organizations to improve EMS in rural communities. Operated by Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Reno County EMS will partner with Horizons Mental Health Center and other rural EMS providers in Haven and Pretty Prairie. They will also provide scholarships for EMT students at Hutchinson Community College. In total, Reno County EMS received $188,596. They were among 32 grantees across the country to receive an award.

Reno Co. gets grant for EMS

Kan. — Four Hutchinson Community College volleyball players reached double figures in kills as the Blue Dragons improved to 2-0 in the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic with a four-set victory over the Jefferson Vikings on Friday night at the Sports Arena.

Led by freshman Blondie Penaflor, the Blue Dragons hit .273 as a team in a 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 win in the second match of the day for Hutchinson. Earlier on Friday, the Dragons swept Trinity Valley. The Dragons improved to 9-6 overall. Hutchinson has two matches in the Classic on Saturday – No. 8-ranked Missouri State-West Plains at 10 a.m. and Laramie County at 2 p.m.

Penaflor had eight of her team-high 16 kills in the fourth set to lead the Blue Dragons. Hutchinson won the first two sets, but dropped the third and trailed 2-0 in the fourth before Penaflor started her big fourth set with three consecutive kills to give Hutch an early lead. Penaflor added two total blocks, including a solo block.

Freshman setter Andrea Serrano set a balanced offensive attack as four players reached double figures in kills for the first time this season. Serrano had 48 assists and posted a double-double with 12 digs.

Freshman Sophie Connor had 11 kills, while sophomore Kristina Head and freshman Morgan Harvey had 10 kills each. The Dragons had 57 total kills and 19 attack errors.

Freshman libero Amanda Velez had 15 digs, while Connor had nine.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons sided out on 14 of 15 chances in the opening set, allowing only one two-point run to the Vikings. Six different Dragons registered kills led by Head, who had four kills and three total blocks in the opening set. A Connor kill capped a 5-0 Dragon run that built an 8-4 lead. Harvey and Head teamed up for a double block to make it 15-8 and another Head kill made it 19-10. Hutch reached a 10-point lead on a Zoe Schmidt-Penaflor double block at 24-14. Two points later, the Vikings had a service error on set point No. 2 for a 25-15 Hutch win.

&nbsp;SET 2: Connor and Penaflor combined for nine of Hutchinson’s 15 kills in the second half. The second half was much closer as Hutchinson’s sideout percentage slipped from 93 percent to 63 percent. Tied at 10-all, a Connor kill started a 4-1 Hutch run. Harvey nailed a cross-court kill for a 14-11 lead. Jefferson answered back with a 4-1 run to knot the set at 15-15. Tied at 16-all, two Head kills and a Connor kill gave the Dragons a 19-6 lead. Leading 22-18, Jefferson tied the set at 23-all with three Dragon attack errors aiding the comeback. Schmidt got a key sideout with a kill out of the middle to make it 24-23 and Penaflor tooled the block on set point for a 25-23 win and a two-set match lead.

SET 3: Hutchinson’s sideout percentage dwindled in the third set to 54 percent. Jefferson jumped out to a 12-5 lead and later led 16-9, forcing the Dragons to burn their second timeout. Hutchinson went on a 6-1 run out of the timeout and pulled within two points after a Harvey solo block cut the Jefferson lead to 17-15. Two points was as close as the Dragons could come in the third set, doing so on seven different occasions after trailing 16-9.

SET 4: Trailing 2-0, Penaflor picked up the Blue Dragons and immediately grabbed momentum from the Vikings. Three-straight kills by Penaflor erased that early deficit and gave Hutch a 3-2 lead. Two more Penaflor kills broke ties at 4-all and 5-all. Leading 7-6, Harvey delivered a kill which sparked an eight-point Amanda Velez service run. Head and Connor teamed up for a stuff block to give Hutch a 15-6 lead. That lead grew to 21-9 as Penaflor had two kills and a solo block on consecutive Dragon points. Jefferson scored on 7 of the next 9 rallies, but a Connor kill and Viking attack error on the final two points gave the Blue Dragons a decisive 25-16 win.

Dragons move to 2-0 in Classic with 4-set win over Jefferson

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball squad snapped a four-match losing streak to open the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic on Friday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons, in the process, had their slumbering offense come back to life with .280 hitting in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-13 victory over the Trinity Valley Cardinals in their opening match of the tournament.

Hutchinson avenged a four-set loss to Trinity Valley just six days earlier at the Butler Invitational in El Dorado. The Blue Dragons improved to 8-6 overall. Later on Friday, Trinity Valley knocked off No. 8 Missouri State-West Plains in four sets.

The Blue Dragons snapped a five-match streak hitting less than .200 as a team was a 42-kill performance and only 18 attack errors.

Freshman Blondie Penaflor led the resurgent Hutchinson offense with 10 kills and two total blocks. Freshman Sophie Connor and sophomore Zoe Schmidt had nine kills each. Connor also had 10 digs.&nbsp;&nbsp;Freshman Morgan Harvey had six kills and sophomore Kristina Head had five kills.

Setter Andrea Serrano tallied 37 assists.

Freshman libero Amanda Velez had a give match with 15 digs and a season-high five service aces. Hutchinson had eight aces for the patch.

SET 1: Connor had a big opening set for Hutchinson with six kills, while Penaflor and Head had three each. Head executed a slide for a kill and an early 7-2 lead. The Cardinals got back to 9-8 with four unanswered points and later tied the set at 15-all. The Dragons answered with a 4-0 run that included a kill by Schmidt, service ace by Head and a Schmidt/Connor double block to lead 19-15. Leading 19-17, the Dragons surged again with two Connor kills in a 3-0 run for a 22-19 lead. Harvey got the kill on set point for a 25-20 win.

SET 2: Trailing 12-11, a Connor kills sparked a 7-1 Dragon run that also included two Velez aces. Her second ace of the set gave the Dragons an 18-13 lead. Trinity Valley again tried to come back and got within 19-16. A Penaflor kill, Rachel Easom ace and Head kill on a Cardinals over-pass bumped the lead back to six at 22-16. Trinity Valley scored on 5 of the final 8 rallies, but the Dragons closed out the set with a Schmidt kill for a 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead. Penaflor had five kills and Schmidt had four kills in the set.

SET 3: The Dragons led 9-5, but Trinity Valley ran four unanswered points to knot the set. The set belonged to Hutchinson after that. A Penaflor-Schmidt double block capped a 4-0 run for a 13-9 lead. Back-to-back Velez aces made it 17-10. Harvey served up an ace for a 19-11 lead and Connor terminated again for a 22-13 lead. The match ended on a Cardinal attack error.

Liselotte Serviss, 92, of McPherson,&nbsp; passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at The Cedars, McPherson. She was an elementary school teacher, having taught in Moundridge,&nbsp; from 1962 through 1992. She was born on October 22, 1928, in Kaiserslautern, Germany, the daughter of Heinrich and Lydia (Henn) Geiger. She attended elementary and high school in Kaiserslautern, Germany, graduated from Kindergarten Nursery Seminary in Landstuhl, Germany, and received a teaching certificate from Bethel College, Newton. Liselotte was united in marriage to Arnold L. Serviss on July 12, 1974, in Moundridge. He preceded her in death on May 24, 2012. Liselotte was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and American Legion Post #24 Auxiliary. She volunteered at the McPherson Opera House Apt. 6, Trash to Treasure, and at McPherson elementary schools as a reading assistant. Survivors include: daughters, Arnell Whited and husband, Gary, of Hutchinson, KS, Bettina Luttig and husband, Monte, of McPherson, and Lori Hardin of Newton; six grandchildren, Stephanie King (John), Melanie Schulz (Chris), Leslie Shaw (Kerry), Steven Medina (Sakura), Devin Medina, and Helene Medina; two step-grandchildren, Mercedes Lecklider and Tanner Luttig; seven great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly said Thursday that vaccine mandates are not a direction she plans to go right now.

"I don't have any intention of going down that road right now," Kelly said. "I think what we are doing with vaccines and taking them out to the community, taking them out to places where people feel comfortable and trust those around them is the road that we're going to continue on down now."

Kelly acknowledges that different jurisdictions and different businesses will make their own policy in that regard.

"I was just in New York on a trade mission," Kelly said. "In order to get into a restaurant in New York, I had to show my vaccine card. There's a lot of that going on, just sort of organically. I'm fully aware that the President has announced the mandate for businesses with over 100 employees. We don't really know what that means. We haven't seen the guidelines. The mandate is also softened though, by, if you don't want to get vaccinated, at least get tested."

Pfizer has said that they will seek emergency use authorization for children. Kelly plans to make sure the rollout happens if that is approved.

"When the vaccines are available for our 5 to 12 year olds, then you can trust that we will make sure that we get those vaccines into our schools and hopefully into the arms of all of our schoolchildren," Kelly said. 

Kelly was in Hutchinson for the Governor's Day at the Kansas State Fair and to speak to students at Hutchinson Community College. The full interview with Kelly is below.

The board had appointed Ryan Maehs to fill the spot only to learn that he lived just outside the area he was to serve. Gamber brings a wealth of experience in education to the board. She is a retired professor from Hutchinson Community College.

USD 309 has its new board member

The No. 16 Cowley College Tigers scored three goals in the first 20 minutes and put the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team in a deep hole Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Dragons nearly climbed out of that hole early in the second half pulling within a goal, but the Tigers remained undefeated with a 4-2 Jayhawk Conference victory on Wednesday.

Hutchinson falls to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the Jayhawk West. The nationally ranked Tigers are now 5-0 and 4-0 in league play. The Blue Dragons travel to Coffeyville on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons were out-shot 18-7, including 10-2 in the opening half. The Tigers had the only five corner kicks of the contest.

Cowley scored just 1:04 into the game when Nanako Seki scored from a corner kick. Elsa Pelichant scored in the 12th minute and Michelle Smith scored at the 19:09 mark of the first half for a 3-0 lead.

Blue Dragon goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona was replaced with Madison Quarles at that point.

The Dragons finally started to generate some possession and got on the board when Hadlie Lowe ripped a shot from the right side of the box into the upper left-hand goal past Makayla Farqharson to cut the Cowley lead to 3-1. Sophomore Jordan Crone was credited with an assist.

The Blue Dragons cut their deficit to 3-2 early in the second half when Aimee Maher played a long pass to Lani Dickinson, who scored her second goal of the season with 40:57 to play in the second half.

Natalia Lima, who had a goal and two assists to lead the Tigers, scored an insurance goal with 26:24 to play in the game. Cowley led 4-2 at that point.

Quarles finished with three saves and one goal allowed after entering the game. Felix-Cardona had one save. Farqharson had one save for the Tigers.

No. 16 Cowley tops Blue Dragons

Freshman Sophie Connor had a career-high 14 kills, but the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team’s offense continued to struggle as Dodge City came into the Sports Arena and defeated the Blue Dragons in four sets on Wednesday night.

Hutchinson lost to Dodge City for the first time since 2010 in a 20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 19-25 defeat by the Conquistadors, who snap a 23-game losing streak against the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson fell to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the Jayhawk West. Dodge City is now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson opens the Blue Dragon Classic on Friday with No. 16 Trinity Valley at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Sports Arena.

Connor had a season-high 14 kills on .238 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons. But the Blue Dragons hit only .126 for the match, the third-straight match to hit .159 or less.

Dodge City hit .264 for the match and hit .308 or better in the three sets it won. Hillary English just missed a triple-double in leading the Conquistadors with 19 kills on .267 hitting eight nine assists and eight digs. Martyna Kmuk hit .429 with 13 kills.

The Blue Dragons were out-blocked by Dodge City 7-5 and out-dug 55-48.

Freshman Zoe Schmidt had nine kills on .333 hitting with 10 digs and two block assists. Freshman Blondie Penaflor had seven kills while hitting .200. Kristin head finished with six kills, a solo block and a block assist.

Freshman Setter Andrea Serrano finished with 32 assists and seven digs. Freshman libero Amanda Velez had nine digs.

SET 1: The first 26 rallies of the opening set featured 12 changes and three lead changes with neither team leading by more than a single point. Dodge City started to take command of the set with a 4-1 run and led 17-14 after an English kill. A Connor kill pulled the Dragons within 18-17, but an English kill, one of four by her in the first set, started a 7-3 run to close out the opening set. Dodge City hit .308 in the first set to the Blue Dragons’ .111 hitting.

Kan. —&nbsp;Kansas Board of Regents CEO Blake Flanders asked the Kansas State Board of Education on Wednesday to consider two major proposals, one is to require students complete the FAFSA to graduate high school. HutchCC President Carter File thinks that is a terrific idea.

Flanders also wants to see Kansas provide in high school, 15 college credit hours free for low-income and first-generation students.

"We already have the Senate Bill 155 program that pays for the full cost of providing an education for students in select technical areas," File said. "That's been a wildly successful program. We have such a great relationship with our local high school and in particular, 308 at the HCTEA. I think, if you want to look at a roadmap or a model for what's being suggested here, that's a great idea."

Regents and State Board of Ed leaders plan to meet over the next few weeks to come up with an action plan on the proposals.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Business-minded teens high school students are invited to participate in the virtual Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge on November 23. The event is hosted by StartUp Hutch.&nbsp;

Jackson Swearer of StartUp Hutch says the challenge is a way to raise awareness about the power and potential of entrepreneurship, and increase youth confidence.

The competition will be judged by a panel of local entrepreneurs, and prizes will be awarded.

In addition to the prize money and recognition at the Reno County competition, first-place competitors will also have the opportunity to compete in the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge held at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This event will include the top young entrepreneurs from schools across the state.&nbsp;

StartUp Hutch to offer youth Entrepreneurship Challenge

COLBY – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team turned in a superb defensive effort, but the Blue Dragon offense struggled in a four-set Jayhawk West loss to the Colby Trojans on Monday night.

The Blue Dragons lost to Colby 20-25, 17-25, 25-16, 18-25 in a match filled with long rallies. The Dragons weren’t able to finish many of those rallies after hitting .037 for the match.

Hutchinson drops to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the Jayhawk West. Colby improved to 9-7 overall and is 2-2 in league play. The Blue Dragons play host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The offense came to life in the third set for Hutchinson. After hitting just .083 in the first two sets, including a negative .406 in the second set, freshman Blondie Penaflor hit .333 in a decisive third-set victory. But the offense sputtered again down the stretch as Colby scored on 7 of the match’s final 8 rallies to seal the victory.

Sophomore Kristina Head led Hutchinson’s stellar back-row performance with a career-high 15 digs. Freshman Andrea Serrano had 12 digs and sophomore Shelby Reeder had 11 digs. The Dragons had 52 total digs in the match.

Penaflor had six of her team-high nine kills in the third set. Penaflor also had four total blocks (1 solo, 3 assists).

Head had seven kills and freshman Aubreigh Haxton had six kills. Freshman Sophie Connor finished with five kills.

The Blue Dragons had 38 kills and 35 total attack errors.

Serrano finished with 17 assists and McKinley Johnson had 13 assists and a service ace

Maelie Chupin had a match-high 14 kills to lead Colby.

Dragons fall in 4 to Trinity Valley

EL DORADO – The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team struggled at both ends of the field Saturday as the No. 12-ranked Butler Grizzlies rolled to a 5-0 Jayhawk Conference victory at BG Products/Veterans Stadium on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons fall to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Blue Dragons play host to the Cowley Tigers at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Butler scored in the 10th minute and scored three times in the first half from three different goal scorers. The Grizzlies tallied two more goals in the second half. Kim McAlpine had two goals to lead the Grizzlies.

The Blue Dragons were out-shot 16-8 and had only two shots on goal by freshman Hadlie Lowe. The Grizzlies had 10 shots on goal with Blue Dragon freshman goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona making five saves.

The five goals allowed tied for the second most goals allowed in Blue Dragon team history and it was the first time since October 22, 2012 that the Dragons allowed five goals in a game. This was only the ninth time in team history the Dragons have allowed five or more goals in a game. The five-goal margin of defeat also tied for the worst loss in team history.

Both Hutchinson and Butler are in the same boat entering Week No. 2.

The defending national champion and previous No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons were upset on the road, 17-10 at Coffeyville last Saturday. Then-No. 15 Butler suffered a 50-28 loss to No. 10 Independence last Saturday in El Dorado.

The fallout from Week 1 was Hutchinson (0-1, 0-1 KJCCC) dropped 10 spots in the first regular-season NJCAA Rankings to No. 11. The Grizzlies (0-1, 0-1) fell completely out of the rankings.

Hutchinson had its 10-game winning streak snapped with last week’s loss to Coffeyville, which was also the first loss in the Drew Dallas era. The Blue Dragons committed seven turnovers, including two turnovers in the fourth quarter at the Red Raven 11-yard line. The Blue Dragons offense failed to score a touchdown for the first time in 115 games.

Special teams had its share of mistakes that included a roughing the kicker penalty that led to a Coffeyville touchdown right before halftime and a blocked punt that led to a Raven touchdown and a 17-7 lead.

The Blue Dragon defense turned in a strong effort by holding the Red Ravens to 278 total yards. The only touchdown allowed was the 7-yard scoring drive by Coffeyville after the roughing-the-kicker penalty. Defensive end Davion Westmoreland had nine tackles and Albert Nunes had a defensive touchdown on a 24-yard fumble return.

Butler fell behind 36-7 early in the third quarter against Independence as the Pirates outgained the Grizzlies 536-281.

Saturday night’s contest will be the 98th in a series history that dates back to 1929. The series is even at 48-48-1.

The Blue Dragons have won the last three games in the series, winning 27-13 in 2018 in El Dorado, 35-27 two seasons ago at Gowans Stadium in a national No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Last season, the Blue Dragons dominated in a 41-10 win in El Dorado.

Dragons look to rebound Saturday vs. Butler

Kan. — On the morning of September 11, 2001, Kansas State Fair Assistant General Manager Denny Stoecklein had a problem on the fairgrounds he was working to fix.

"I think it was on the opening night of the fair, it might have been on the Saturday, I got a call, I got an anonymous phone call," Stoecklein said. "Somebody said, you've got some people working at one of your gates, actually two of your gates that are stealing from you. The fair hires 500 to 600 seasonal folks and a lot of them had been there for many, many years. The people they were saying were doing this were veteran employees."

After auditing tickets for a couple of days, it was time to see if they could catch anyone.

"Lt. Randy Moon with the Highway Patrol, Randy was officed on the Fairgrounds at that time," Stoecklein said. "The lieutenant in that office is typically the one who is kind of over the Fair for the Highway Patrol on site and we're talking about this and making the plan that we're going to park a horse trailer right next to this gate and put some troopers in the back with cameras and film the goings on and see if we can pick up on anything."

"His pager goes off and he looks down at it and he says, a plane just hit the World Trade Center," Stoecklein said. "We kind of commented that, you know, tragic accident, you know, and we get back to our meeting and we're planning and doing some things. The pager goes off again. Randy looks at it. He goes, another plane just hit the World Trade Center and then you knew. This is not an accident."

Given that everyone wanted information more than anything at the time and smartphones weren't in every pocket, the next question for the fair was easy to figure out, but hard to answer.

"What do we do now, do we keep having a fair, what's going on?" Stoecklein said. "I would say, within 60 to 90 minutes, we were gathered on the Fairgrounds with Highway Patrol, city police, emergency management, you name it. Every emergency management, certainly at the local level and they were in touch with people at the state and federal level, trying to get a better understanding of, what are we dealing with? From that, we kind of just started to make plans as to what we wanted to do and tried to figure out, how do we continue, if we continue?"

Any decision involving the fair involves the Governor's office.

"Bill Graves was the governor at that time," Stoecklein said. "It just so happened that the governor, on that day, was in Wichita. Wichita was hosting what was called a midwest U.S.-Japan association conference. There were people from a number of states as well as Japan in Wichita. We were able to get in touch with the governor, because, as you would imagine, that conference was canceled. Now you've got people with a lot of anxiety at this conference that just want to get home, some of them to Japan, but there's no air travel."

Since getting from Wichita to Hutchinson on the ground wasn't an issue, Graves was able to visit.

"The governor came over to Hutch, met with the board and management of the fair and talked to law enforcement and the decision was made that we're going to continue," Stoecklein said. "We're going to have the fair. I don't remember all of the pros and cons and things we talked about, but, you know, one of the things that was commonly mentioned by all of us was, you know, if we shut the doors then, whoever is doing this, they win."

The crowd that day was understandably somber.

"One of the probably most visited booths at the fair, right in the heart of the fairgrounds is the KWCH booth," Stoecklein said. "They have all those windows open and they had TVs in there and you can imagine what the TVs were tuned to. People were just gathered around that en masse, trying to understand what was going on and learning everything we could. Obviously, we increased the security at the gates significantly, but decided we were going to continue through the rest of the fair."

"Blessid Union of Souls was scheduled to perform that night," Stoecklein said. "They likely were on the Fairgrounds and had arrived. I don't know that they were flying in that day, but, even if they were there, probably having a concert that night wasn't the appropriate thing to do. They did not perform."

There was another change to the lineup at the last minute.

"Lee Ann Womack was supposed to perform, I think with Keith Urban," Stoecklein said. "She couldn't get there. The group Lonestar, I think, was traveling back to Nashville. I want to say they'd been out west. Maybe they'd been in Utah. The Utah State Fair runs the same time as the Kansas State Fair, which would make sense. Our agency got in touch with them and said, hey, do you want to make a pit stop in Hutch and do a show, which they did."

Stoecklein's favorite memory surrounds another grandstand act that year.

"The group Styx was scheduled to perform on September 15th," Stoecklein said. "I don't recall where they were. For some reason, I think that they were maybe on a little break and they were all going to meet up again in Hutch. They weren't on tour buses or anything. I think they were going to fly into Wichita for the show. Obviously, airfare being shut down put a stop to that, but they were determined not to miss the show. They felt it was important to get there. 

"It would have been their first performance since the events of 9-11. They got rental cars, any way, any how that they could get to Hutchinson, Kansas. They found a way to do it and put on just an incredible show. We had a gentleman that worked for the agency that the fair used to book talent, Romeo Entertainment Group. His name was Steve Bogdanovich. We called him Bogie. Bogie was our guy backstage and his favorite saying, no matter what the situation, he would just look at you and his glasses always rode low on his nose and he'd look over the top of them and say, it's all good. It's all good. 

"Bogie called me early that day and he said, boss, I need a flag on a pole. An American flag on a pole. I said okay, what do you need that for, Bogie? He said, Styx wants it. I said okay. We rounded up a long wooden pole and a flag. I got with our carpenter and he put the screws through the grommets and got it affixed to the pole and I took it down to the grandstand and gave it to Bogie. I didn't think much of it until that night. I go down to check on the show. Bogie and I are near the back of the stage and I see this flag rolled up and it's back behind the drum kit, while the show is going on.

"Styx does their set. They walk off and we're waiting for the encore. People are getting worked up and getting excited and ready for them to come back. Twenty years ago, and I'm not as young as I once was, but I'm pretty sure I remember this pretty closely to how it happened. One of the members of Styx walks back to that flag and grabs it and then they all just walked to the front of the stage and lifted it up as high as they could. I have never been in a place so loud as it was when they did that. It just about blew the roof off the grandstand."

Stoecklein got the band to sign a photo of them with the flag when they returned later in their careers and he has that photo at home.

"There's never been a moment when I looked back and thought, did we make the right call?" Stoecklein said. "I never doubted that continuing with it was the right thing to do and the appropriate and safe thing to do. When you look at the history of the fair, it was there through the Great Depression, through two world wars, how many other conflicts and then 9-11."

Stoecklein currently serves as Director of Marketing and Public Relations. He was with the fair until 2015 before going to the college.

Kan. — On the morning of September 11, 2001, Kansas State Fair Assistant General Manager Denny Stoecklein had a problem on the fairgrounds he was working to fix."I think it was on the opening night of the fair, it might have been on the Saturday, I got a call, I got an anonymous phone call," Stoecklein said. "Somebody said, you've got some people working at one of your gates, actually two of your gates that are stealing from you. The fair hires 500 to 600 seasonal folks and a lot of them had been there for many, many years. The people they were saying were doing this were veteran employees."After auditing tickets for a couple of days, it was time to see if they could catch anyone."Lt. Randy Moon with the Highway Patrol, Randy was officed on the Fairgrounds at that time," Stoecklein said. "The lieutenant in that office is typically the one who is kind of over the Fair for the Highway Patrol on site and we're talking about this and making the plan that we're going to park a horse trailer right next to this gate and put some troopers in the back with cameras and film the goings on and see if we can pick up on anything."Lieutenant Moon had a pager on his hip."His pager goes off and he looks down at it and he says, a plane just hit the World Trade Center," Stoecklein said. "We kind of commented that, you know, tragic accident, you know, and we get back to our meeting and we're planning and doing some things. The pager goes off again. Randy looks at it. He goes, another plane just hit the World Trade Center and then you knew. This is not an accident."Given that everyone wanted information more than anything at the time and smartphones weren't in every pocket, the next question for the fair was easy to figure out, but hard to answer."What do we do now, do we keep having a fair, what's going on?" Stoecklein said. "I would say, within 60 to 90 minutes, we were gathered on the Fairgrounds with Highway Patrol, city police, emergency management, you name it. Every emergency management, certainly at the local level and they were in touch with people at the state and federal level, trying to get a better understanding of, what are we dealing with? From that, we kind of just started to make plans as to what we wanted to do and tried to figure out, how do we continue, if we continue?"Any decision involving the fair involves the Governor's office."Bill Graves was the governor at that time," Stoecklein said. "It just so happened that the governor, on that day, was in Wichita. Wichita was hosting what was called a midwest U.S.-Japan association conference. There were people from a number of states as well as Japan in Wichita. We were able to get in touch with the governor, because, as you would imagine, that conference was canceled. Now you've got people with a lot of anxiety at this conference that just want to get home, some of them to Japan, but there's no air travel."Since getting from Wichita to Hutchinson on the ground wasn't an issue, Graves was able to visit."The governor came over to Hutch, met with the board and management of the fair and talked to law enforcement and the decision was made that we're going to continue," Stoecklein said. "We're going to have the fair. I don't remember all of the pros and cons and things we talked about, but, you know, one of the things that was commonly mentioned by all of us was, you know, if we shut the doors then, whoever is doing this, they win."The crowd that day was understandably somber."One of the probably most visited booths at the fair, right in the heart of the fairgrounds is the KWCH booth," Stoecklein said. "They have all those windows open and they had TVs in there and you can imagine what the TVs were tuned to. People were just gathered around that en masse, trying to understand what was going on and learning everything we could. Obviously, we increased the security at the gates significantly, but decided we were going to continue through the rest of the fair."One fair grandstand act did not perform."Blessid Union of Souls was scheduled to perform that night," Stoecklein said. "They likely were on the Fairgrounds and had arrived. I don't know that they were flying in that day, but, even if they were there, probably having a concert that night wasn't the appropriate thing to do. They did not perform."There was another change to the lineup at the last minute."Lee Ann Womack was supposed to perform, I think with Keith Urban," Stoecklein said. "She couldn't get there. The group Lonestar, I think, was traveling back to Nashville. I want to say they'd been out west. Maybe they'd been in Utah. The Utah State Fair runs the same time as the Kansas State Fair, which would make sense. Our agency got in touch with them and said, hey, do you want to make a pit stop in Hutch and do a show, which they did."Stoecklein's favorite memory surrounds another grandstand act that year."The group Styx was scheduled to perform on September 15th," Stoecklein said. "I don't recall where they were. For some reason, I think that they were maybe on a little break and they were all going to meet up again in Hutch. They weren't on tour buses or anything. I think they were going to fly into Wichita for the show. Obviously, airfare being shut down put a stop to that, but they were determined not to miss the show. They felt it was important to get there. "It would have been their first performance since the events of 9-11. They got rental cars, any way, any how that they could get to Hutchinson, Kansas. They found a way to do it and put on just an incredible show. We had a gentleman that worked for the agency that the fair used to book talent, Romeo Entertainment Group. His name was Steve Bogdanovich. We called him Bogie. Bogie was our guy backstage and his favorite saying, no matter what the situation, he would just look at you and his glasses always rode low on his nose and he'd look over the top of them and say, it's all good. Stoecklein: Memories still linger from 2001 Kansas State Fair

EL DORADO – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team received a wake-up call just in time and after Day 1 of the Butler Invitational was complete, the Blue Dragons were 2-0.

The Blue Dragons trailed Division II, No. 18 Neosho County 2-1, but rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets to upend the Panthers 25-17, 18-25, 16-25, 25-17, 15-6 to open the tournament on Friday at the Power Plant. Hutchinson then rolled by Rose State 25-12, 25-18, 25-19 in the second match on Friday.

The Blue Dragons improve to 7-3 overall. Hutchinson will have only one match on Saturday, Trinity Valley at 11 a.m. The scheduled final match with NEO was cancelled.

The Blue Dragons improved to 3-0 this season in five-set matches, but for the first time had to rally from a set down after three sets.

The Dragons dominated the first set after it was tied at 15-all. The Dragons won 10 of the final 12 rallies to earn the win, but sets 2 and 3 were all Neosho County. Hutch had a slim 9-8 lead in the fourth set and the Blue Dragon offense came to life with a 7-2 run to force a Panther timeout at 16-10. Hutch cruised from that point to force a fifth set.

The Blue Dragons opened the fifth set with a 5-1 lead after a Melina Christodoulou kill. The cushion grew to 10-3 after kills from Blondie Penaflor and Kristina Head and a Panther attack error. Head had kills on Hutch’s final two points to close out the fifth set, 15-6.

Penaflor finished with a match-high 15 kills. Head had 12 kills and Morgan Harvey finished with nine.

Setter Andrea Serrano had a season-high 38 assists and McKinley Johnson added 14.

Libero Shelby Reeder had 20 digs in the match to surpass 550 career digs. Zoe Schmidt finished with a season-high 18 digs and Sophie Connor had 10.

Head had two of Hutchinson’s six service aces.

The Blue Dragons then posted their third sweep of the season in a 3-0 win over Rose State later on Friday.

Penaflor against led the Dragons with eight kills. Head had seven kills and seven total blocks, including a solo stuff. Harvey had five kills and three total blocks.

Serrano had 22 assists and McKinley had 11. Reeder had a team-high 10 assists.

After dominating the first set, the Dragons trailed the second set 11-5. The Dragons responded out of a timeout with a 10-0 run. That run great to 14-4 with a Serrano ace that made it 19-15. Back-to-back Baylee Miller aces made it 22-16 and a Tauja Durham kill closed out the set with a kill.

Dragons rally to defeat Neosho; sweep Rose State

Kan. — HutchCC Fire Science students walked the stairs as part of their firefighter fitness training this week in memorial of the first responders killed on September 11, 2001.

"We will be doing a 9/11 memorial service at the Hutchinson Community College Fire Science campus," said Fire Science instructor Jason Holland. "That would be a flag ceremony at 7 a.m. on Saturday."

The department will also have a memorial at that night's HutchCC-Butler football game.

"Right before the game, we'll drop the flag and do a ceremony there with a trumpet playing Taps," Holland said.&nbsp;

Three hundred forty-three firefighters from the New York Fire Department were killed trying to save others on September 11, 2001.
