RENO COUNTY — A ramp closure at the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction in Reno County is expected to begin Tuesday, April 2.

The closure will be on the ramp connecting southbound K-14 to westbound U.S. 50.

The closure is expected to end around Friday, April 5.

During the closure, motorists should seek other routes.

The ramp closure is part of a nearly $3.6 million patching project on K-14. The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction north to Yaggy Road.&nbsp;The length is almost 7 miles. The work is expected to be completed around mid-August.

During the work, K-14 traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers or a pilot car. Ramps will be closed at times. Motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and face delays of up to 15 minutes.

Iowa Civil Contracting Inc., of Victor, Iowa, is the primary contractor for the $3,559,085 project.

K-14 and U.S. 50 ramp to close next week

TOPEKA, Kan. — U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Kansas State Director Christy Davis today announced $1,809,677 in investments in renewable energy and efficiency projects to lower costs, generate new income and create jobs for Kansas farmers, ranchers, and rural small businesses.

“USDA is committed to&nbsp;ensuring rural Kansas is benefitting from the clean energy economy,” Davis said. “These investments will expand access to renewable energy while creating good-paying jobs and saving Kansas communities and businesses money.”

A $68,957 grant&nbsp;will help purchase and install a 59.2 kW solar array for Rusty Feather LLC of&nbsp;Canton. The project is estimated to replace 74,896 kWh per year, enough energy to power seven homes.&nbsp; 

A $106,850 grant&nbsp;will help purchase and install an 81 kW and 40 kW solar arrays for Fusion Bank of&nbsp;Pratt&nbsp;and&nbsp;Larned. The project is estimated to replace 180,047 kWh per year, enough energy to power 16 homes.&nbsp;

A $110,625 grant will&nbsp;help purchase and install an 80 kW and 31 kW solar arrays for Mix-America Redi-Mix Inc. of&nbsp;Hutchinson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lyons. The project is estimated to replace 65,060 kWh per year, enough energy to power six homes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Solar projects get USDA funding

Three newly hired apprentices at two companies say the chance to earn money while they learn more about their jobs was one of the main reasons they considered positions created through Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) award-winning Rural Kansas Apprenticeship Program (RKAP).

<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=670a5639d5&amp;e=27e264ea00" target="_blank">South Bend Industrial Hemp</a>&nbsp;used the program to hire Joseph Rogers and Kaidence Sanchez as hemp processing facility operators at the Great Bend-based company.“I think it’s really cool the apprenticeship comes with some educational opportunities,” Rogers says.

Sanchez says he’s never seen anything like the apprenticeship program and believes “it’s an exciting way to learn more and earn more money.”

Camron Hicks is the second apprentice hired through RKAP at Moundridge-based Mid-Kansas Cooperative (MKC). He’s training as an operations specialist at MKC’s Canton location. Hicks says he wants to travel throughout Kansas and learn more about grain elevators, and he sees a real career path through his apprenticeship.

“I’ve always wanted to move my way up in a company,” Hicks says. “I’m very excited to see where this takes me with knowledge and the overall functions of elevators.”

RKAP helps companies like South Bend Industrial Hemp and MKC design apprenticeships to meet state and federal guidelines while being tailored to specific jobs. On top of an apprentice's work duties, there are educational and training components with scheduled wage progression.

“The goal is to create trained and skilled workers for companies operating in rural Kansas,” says Kylee Stout, KFB business development manager. “RKAP helps employers manage the paperwork of an apprenticeship while giving them the ability to create pathways for workers to acquire practical skills that lead to well-paying jobs.”

Apprenticeships benefit employers by developing a skilled and loyal workforce. Employees benefit from having a full-time job as they earn a certified credential showing mastery of their craft.

In addition to operations specialist,&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=d10948ccb0&amp;e=27e264ea00" target="_blank">MKC&nbsp;</a>has apprentice openings for agriculture equipment operators and CDL drivers. Other employers with open apprenticeships include positions as a CDL driver at&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=0eeda749fd&amp;e=27e264ea00" target="_blank">Ag Partners</a>&nbsp;and agronomy operator and grain elevator operator at&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=24389961a9&amp;e=27e264ea00" target="_blank">Alliance Ag &amp; Grain, LLC</a>.

'Earn and learn' draws employees to Rural Kansas Apprenticeship Program

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of North Main and 25th Avenue.

The blond-brick building at 2500 N. Main was constructed in 1946 by Owen S. Boone for $3,200. It was to be his new Ideal Laundry and Dry Cleaners. The first photo shows this business in 1952.

Owen and his family, Cecil and Clarence, first started in the laundry business in 1917 at 534 E. Ave. E. The second photo shows that first attempt in this field.

It was also the residence of Clarence. As time went on, part of the family was Ineeda Laundry and part was Ideal Laundry. But by 1946, it was just Owen and the Ideal Laundry. 

In 1966, Wallace Craig took over the Ideal Laundry at 25th and Main.

Between 1969 and 1974, it became the American Uniform Rental Inc.

In 1976, the 2500 N. Main building was remodeled into multiple retail outlets. The third photo shows 2500 N. Main today, now known as the North Main Center and owned by First Choice Leasing L.L.C.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Block-By-Block Investment Program is an opportunity for residents of Hutchinson to come together, improve their neighborhoods, and foster a strong sense of community pride. 

The program is a collaborative effort between the City of Hutchinson and Hutch Rec’s Healthy Neighborhood Initiative aimed at encouraging clusters of neighbors to collaborate on exterior home improvement projects, enhancing curb appeal and fostering a sense of community. 

Eligible projects include a range of exterior improvements such as updating porches, replacing front doors, adding flowerbeds, and more.

In order to get funding, you must do the following:

Must be located in a featured neighborhoods south of 17th street. (SW Bricktown, The Founders Neighborhood, Grace Arbor, Creekside, Midtown, College Grove)

Have proximity of clustered properties to maximize impact.

Demonstrate teamwork among neighbors in planning and executing projects.

Applications will be accepted from February 1 to April 1, with projects expected to be completed by the end of August 2024.

Block-By-Block Investment Program deadline April 1

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2024 Spring Consignment Art Auction at the Hutchinson Art Center is coming up Saturday.

This auction will feature over 120 artworks by local, regional, and national artists, including Birger Sandzen,&nbsp;Thomas Kinkade, Lester Raymer,&nbsp;Martha Hamilton, Jack Stout, and many others.

The auction is Saturday, March 30th. Doors open at 9:00 a.m., with the auction starting at 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be available, there will be plenty of seating, and admission is free and open to the public.

All artwork from this auction is on display in the Main Gallery through March 29th. It is a great opportunity to view the artwork in-person.

Additionally, images of the artwork are now <a href="https://www.hutchinsonartcenter.net/2024-spring-art-auction-gallery">available for online viewing</a>.&nbsp;

Consignment Art Auction is March 30

NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting,&nbsp;the City Commission took three actions to continue spurring industrial development in Newton.

First, the Commission approved a listing agreement with Lange Real Estate to market about 87 acres of land on Oliver Road just west of the Newton City/County Airport. The one-year agreement is non-exclusive, and the broker will receive a 6% commission only on sales resulting from his own efforts. Harvey County Economic Development will continue to generate its own leads on potential buyers. The land will be listed for $15,000 an acre.

The Commission also extended the expiration date of K&amp;O Railroad’s option to purchase property in the Kansas Logistics Park until Oct 1. K&amp;O optioned about 23 acres of property from the City in April of last year. The company said&nbsp;it hoped to build a railyard with capacity for 120-200 rail cars, with the ability to serve current and future development in the park.&nbsp;If K&amp;O decides to exercise the option, all option payments ($45,000) will be applied as a credit to the purchase price. If it opts not to purchase the property, the City will retain the payments.

The City Commission also approved a funding resolution for a rail extension at the Logistics Park. Earlier this year, the City approved a grant agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation for about $3 million to fund 75% of the cost of construction of the extension, which will serve the planned GAF manufacturing facility. The City will bond its portion of the construction costs.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The HutchCC Blue Dragons ended their season in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Hutch lost to Connors State 91-69 on Wednesday night.&nbsp;

"Coach Muse (head coach of Connors State) does a hell of a job and that's a lot of wins on that sideline with him and they deserve the win," Head Coach Tommy DeSalme said. "And I was proud of our guys for fighting. They never gave up and their heads didn't go down. That's kind of been an issue with our games this year where we lost it but we kept fighting all the way to the end."

Hutch trailed Connors State 41-35 at the half. Connors State picked up the intensity though after halftime and pushed Hutch out to the 3-point line.

"They were just being real physical with us," sophomore guard Kamryn Thomas said. "Keeping us out of the paint, closing out real strong. It wasn't nothing we've not seen before. Shots just wasn't falling tonight."

Hutch shot 15.4% (4-26) from the field, a tournament low. Connors State scored 52 points in the paint and shot 51.6% (32-62) from the field. They only took three shots from the 3-point line.&nbsp;

"That kind of style of play, if you can't speed them up, it's a hard deal," DeSalme said.&nbsp;

Sophomore forward Bradyn Hubbard who typically averages 25 points per game for Connors State put up 29 against Hutch.&nbsp;

"He's a grown man that knows his game and knows where his spots are and we did a pretty good job at getting him off his spots but him and that other post player(freshman forward Buddy Hammer Jr.), they know who they are and they did a good job," DeSalme said.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons will loose seven sophomores off their roster for the 2024-25 season. Thomas and sophomore forward Valentino Simon were named to the All-KJCCC Division I First Team earlier this season.&nbsp;Thomas scored 12 points against Connors State and recorded 3 blocks.&nbsp;

"We overcame a lot behind closed doors and stuff like that so I wouldn't want any other team to do it with man," Thomas said.&nbsp;

Sophomore guard&nbsp; J.P. Ricks was an All-KJCCC Division I Honorable Mention selection. Against Connors State, Ricks scored 22 points, recorded four assists and had zero turnovers.&nbsp;

"We had a great crowd three days straight," Ricks said. "We just came up short but I mean it's part of basketball. We had a good group of guys and we went to work every day in practice and games and we just came up short."&nbsp;

Hutchinson finished the season with an overall 29-7 record. Connors State will play Triton in the semifinals on Thursday, March 28 at 7:15 p.m. On the other side of the bracket, Barton will play Indian Hills at 6 p.m.&nbsp;

Glen Grunwald and Dan Naccarato will have the game play-by-play on Thursday on Country 102.9 FM and KWBW 1450 AM/98.5 FM.

🏀 NJCAA Tourney: 'We kept fighting': Blue Dragons end season in quarterfinals

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— One side of the bracket is now set for the semifinals of the NJCAA Tournament. Barton CC will face No.5 Indian Hills in the semifinals on Thursday. 

Indians Hills beat the No. 13 Odessa Wranglers 74-68 on Wednesday night.&nbsp;

Indian Hills led by just two at halftime (34-32). It was a tie game four times throughout 40 minutes of play and there were five lead changes.&nbsp;

However, Odessa's time at the national tournament came down to the wire with a little under ninety seconds left on the clock. Sophomore guard Brandon Maclin's layup for the Wranglers tied it up 67-67. 

Sophomore guard Willie Lightfoot knocked down a free throw for Odessa with about 17 seconds left in the game, but Indian Hills held them there.&nbsp;

Lightfoot led Odessa in scoring with 23 points and Maclin scored 17.&nbsp;

Sophomore guard TJ Morris scored 19 for Indian Hills and sophomore forward Chris Mpaka scored 16.&nbsp;

Indian Hills will play No.1 Barton in the semifinals on Thursday, March 28 at 5 p.m.&nbsp;

Glen Grunwald and Bryan Miller will have the game play-by-play on Thursday on Country 102.9 FM and KWBW 1450 AM/98.5 FM.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— It's the game of trading baskets, at least it was in the second half for Triton College and South Plains College Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;Triton ultimately walked away with a 88-87 win against the No.2 South Plains Texans.

The game came down to the very final seconds. With about .07 left on the clock, sophomore guard Jaborri McGhee got fouled on the 3-point line by Triton's freshman guard AJ Dixon.&nbsp; This gave South Plains the opportunity to tie it up, but McGhee made just two of the three free throws.&nbsp;

South Plains led at halftime 47-43. Triton took the lead for the first time in the second with 16:05 remaining on the clock (52-51). There were 17 lead changes and five tied up scores.&nbsp;

Sophomore guard Amar Augillard let Triton with 23 points. He also recorded four assists. Dixon scored 20 for the Trojans. Sophomore forward Malique Ewin recorded a double-double for South Plains with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jermahri Hill scored 18.&nbsp;

Triton will play the winner of No. 19 Connors State and No.11&nbsp; Hutchinson in the final four on Thursday, March 28 at 7:15 p.m.&nbsp;

🏀 NJCAA Tourney: Triton takes down No.2 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Barton CC is the first team from Kansas to secure a spot in the semifinals of the 2024 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The No.1 Cougars beat the No.8 Northwest Florida State Raiders 87-73.&nbsp;

It was mainly an inside game, as both teams shot less than 30% from the 3-point line.

The Cougars led 42-35 at halftime and stayed out in front for the rest of the game. Barton proved successful by attacking the rim against the Raiders. 

They scored 50 points in the paint to Northwest Florida's 30 and shot 50% from the field.&nbsp;The Cougars also shot 72.7% from the free throw line (24-33).&nbsp;

Six off the Cougars roster scored in double figures.&nbsp;Freshman guard Brent Moss led Barton with 18 points. Moss was 6-10 overall and 6-6 from the 3-point line off the bench.&nbsp;

On the defensive end, Barton recorded 19 steals. Sophomore guard Cooper Jackson had seven steals.&nbsp;

Freshman guard Jamal Sumlin and sophomore guard/forward Tavion Banks had 16 points each for Northwest Florida State.&nbsp;

Barton will play the winner of No.13 Odessa College&nbsp; and No.5 Indian Hills in the last four of the tournament on Thursday, March 28, at 5 p.m.&nbsp;

Tomorrow night's play-by-play will be taken care of  by Glen Grunwald and Bryan Miller on Country 102.9 and KWBW 1450 AM/98.5 FM.

The No.1 Cougars beat the No.8 Northwest Florida State Raiders 87-73.&nbsp;It was mainly an inside game, as both teams shot less than 30% from the 3-point line.The Cougars led 42-35 at halftime and stayed out in front for the rest of the game. Barton proved successful by attacking the rim against the Raiders. They scored 50 points in the paint to Northwest Florida's 30 and shot 50% from the field.&nbsp;The Cougars also shot 72.7% from the free throw line (24-33).&nbsp;Six off the Cougars roster scored in double figures.&nbsp;Freshman guard Brent Moss led Barton with 18 points. Moss was 6-10 overall and 6-6 from the 3-point line off the bench.&nbsp;On the defensive end, Barton recorded 19 steals. Sophomore guard Cooper Jackson had seven steals.&nbsp;Freshman guard Jamal Sumlin and sophomore guard/forward Tavion Banks had 16 points each for Northwest Florida State.&nbsp;Barton will play the winner of No.13 Odessa College&nbsp; and No.5 Indian Hills in the last four of the tournament on Thursday, March 28, at 5 p.m.&nbsp;Tomorrow night's play-by-play will be taken care of by Glen Grunwald and Bryan Miller on Country 102.9 and KWBW 1450 AM/98.5 FM.

🏀 NJCAA Tourney: No. 1 Barton headed to last four

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, a Hutchinson woman was arrested on charges connected with arson and a stabbing Tuesday night.

Deputies responded to 5300 W 43rd Ave Unit A in Hutchinson, KS for a report of a stabbing at 7:17 p.m. on March 26.&nbsp; When they got there, deputies observed heavy smoke coming from the front door.  The victim, a 65 year old man of Hutchinson, was located outside near the residence with multiple stab wounds to his chest.  He appeared to be in stable condition at that time and was able to communicate that the suspect, 52-year-old Amy Rowland of Hutchinson had set his house on fire, stabbed him, and had walked away from the scene. 

 As Deputies began to search the area for her, a 911 call came in from across the street at 5300 W Nickerson Blvd. A 59-year-old man of Hutchinson reported a female had entered his residence and attempted to set his house on fire.  Deputies proceeded to this location and took Amy Rowland into custody. 

  Reno County Fire District 3 &amp; 4 responded and put out the structure fire. 

 The house had extensive damage.   The victim was treated and transported by Reno County EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.  A search warrant was conducted on the residence once the fire was extinguished. 

Amy Rowland was booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility on a $516,500 bond for Attempted Homicide in the first degree, Attempted Aggravated Arson, Arson, and Criminal Threat.

The person(s) involved has not yet been convicted of a crime and are presumed innocent. The presumption of innocence shall continue until such time that the person(s) accused may be found guilty by a court of law. Charges may be amended at the discretion of the District Attorney and Court.

Arrest made in Tuesday night arson and stabbing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Seth Dewey let Hutch Post know that he will be leaving the Reno County Health Department on April 5. 

"In the past we have enjoyed the great opportunities for educating the community on substance use issues, overdoses, and a wealth of other issues," Dewey said in an email to Hutch Post and to the Hutchinson Tribune.&nbsp;

Dewey will be taking on the role of Regional Area Director for residential and outpatient services for Mirror Inc. in Newton.&nbsp;

Dewey, who is leaving his post as Health Educator with the Reno County Health Department, won the 2022 Kansas Prevention Community Leader Award, recognizing his outstanding contribution to community prevention efforts.

Dewey was nominated back then for his work with the Reno Recovery Collaborative, which consists of Reno County citizens and organizations who are committed to the reduction of harm caused by the substance use epidemic.

Dewey has been with the Reno County Health Department since January 6, 2020.

Dewey moving on to new job in Newton

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — What should have been a relatively straightforward motion by the Board of County Commissioners in Reno County to table discussion of signing a contract for an economic incentive program at the request of the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber and to take it up at the next meeting devolved into a county commissioner accusing another of impropriety in moving the item to a future consent agenda instead of the regular business items.

"I would say to the public, you know, if you want your tax dollars going to bring people out of county in to take your jobs, or potentially criminal aliens coming in to Reno County to take your jobs, then you need to contact the other four commissioners," said Commissioner John Whitesel. "That's what this policy does. They are wanting to put it on the consent agenda to avoid debate."

Commissioner Daniel Friesen, who made the consent agenda motion, took issue with that characterization.

"The reason it should go on the consent agenda is we just debated it for 10 minutes on the public record, on video," Friesen said. "If we get a lot of feedback on it, you know, we can make a motion together to pull it off. If there's no feedback, then it's efficient use to put it on the consent agenda so we don't have to have the same conversation next meeting again."

The item was approved to be on the consent agenda at the next meeting by a 4-1 vote, with Whitesel the only no vote.

The original request from the Chamber was to change the way economic incentives can be given to allow for them to be given to individuals in recruitment and not merely to whole businesses, with a specific request by Superior Holding prompting the ask.

"Superior Holding operates several facilities here in Hutchinson and Reno County," Teufel said. "They are considering an expansion of their facility that is on Corey Road. Their proposal is to add to that facility, either through lease of an adjacent building or expansion of their current footprint. That would be a several million dollar endeavor to create 50 jobs. They have recently added 50 jobs over the last four years and they know the limitations of our current workforce. While they will make every effort to employ students coming out of our welding programs and employ other people here, they also acknowledge that they don't want to just churn a workforce with other employers and steal from their neighboring employer. They would like to look at this as a pilot program to try a promotion to relocate people to Reno County. They would be providing a relocation incentive to individuals moving here. They have to be documented that they are moving here by establishing residency, proving that their residency was elsewhere and that they establish residence in Reno County. They have to provide that documentation to our office. Then, on a quarterly basis, we would provide a report to Reno County to draw down from a set aside fund that would be capped at this point, based on those 50 jobs, at $2500 per job, a total of $125,000. In order for them to then receive a portion of a match to that on a reimbursement basis."

The Board of County Commissioners will meet April 10 at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room at the Reno County Courthouse.

Superior Holding incentives prompt commissioner dust-up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners approved on Wednesday proposed regulations for Limited-Scale Commercial Solar Energy Projects. Those are defined as under 10 acres and under 2 megawatts of power.

The County Commission decided to allow batteries for such projects if requested, but they would have to be approved through the regular conditional use permit process and battery energy storage systems, including all mechanical equipment, shall be enclosed in a building suitable for storage of the battery, with a locking mechanism to aid in preventing unauthorized access.

The final regulations also included clarification on what is not allowed underneath solar panels (think concrete and asphalt) and other minor tweaks to the regulations.

The Planning Commission also clarified that their current language will not allow for any construction of&nbsp;Limited-Scale Commercial Solar Energy Projects within two miles of another similar project.

The Planning Commission further decided that the language regarding sound level should remain intact.

County commission approves limited scale solar

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of her report to the Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday, Vicki Mader with Horizons Mental Health Center told them about a milestone for Horizons in the Reno County Jail.

"If somebody's incarcerated and they are determined to be incompetent, they have to go through what's called restoration," Mader said. "That usually takes place in Larned. There's a very long wait list for that. There's been some changes at the state level that has provided us the opportunity to do some of that restoration actually in the jail. We started that recently, and we did complete our first restoration here in the Reno County Jail."

Mader sees it as a big win for the county, as it can get help for these people sooner.

"Not all people are eligible for that type of restoration," Mader said. "We want to provide it, if it's applicable for them. It can include medication services, getting individuals on medication, therapy, case management, whatever we need to do to help them get back to a place where they could be competent."

Once a person charged with a crime is found to be competent, it's important to go forward with the court process as quickly as is practical.

"There's some individuals that can wait years in jail to get to Larned," Mader said. "It's a big win for us. Related to being able to stand trial, we've had it to where somebody goes to Larned, they come back, they've completed the restoration process, they're good to go and court gets delayed and they decompensate and we have to start the process all over again."

To decompensate is&nbsp;to lose the ability to maintain normal or appropriate psychological defenses, sometimes resulting in depression, anxiety, or delusions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Horizons working to get competency without trip to Larned

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz said they met with the architects this week to send the construction drawings for the Bison Arena project out for bids. He's not sure exactly how much it will cost, at the end of the day.

"We'll kind of play it by ear," Schulz said. "We're in the midst of fundraising. They're able to come in and give us a rough estimate. To do the full on project, they are estimating about $36 million. That is doing a full enclosing of the envelope. That's retuckpointing, new windows, new roof, new everything. That includes all the electrical, plumbing, all that kind of stuff. Also, a birthing center and the gardens on the south side. That's the full package."

The Kansas Legislature has already committed $10 million to the project.

"That money will be encumbered here shortly," Schulz said. "That will be so we can start getting the roof, the tuckpointing of the brick. The northwest corner started to sag a little bit, so they are going to be jacking that up, windows, doors, all that kind of stuff. It's gonna be a big, big project, but it's going to be wonderful once it's opened."

Both Schulz and James Fisher with the Fairgrounds Foundation have quite a few meetings set up with potential donors for the project.

TOPEKA, Kan. — In response to the need to provide more Therapeutic Family Foster Homes (TFFH), the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) announced Tuesday that seven agencies will receive $4,765,355 in grants to build capacity through innovative approaches that will significantly increase the number of homes available and provide needed training and supportive services.

Last year, the Kansas Legislature appropriated $6 million in State General Funds to support the TFFH capacity building program. TFFH receive increased training and supportive services to provide a temporary home for youth with significant emotional, behavioral, or mental health needs. &nbsp;The homes are part of the continuum level of care and support as a resource for children and families.

“Together, the selected agencies will grow the network of Therapeutic Family Foster Homes while providing meaningful services and supports,” said DCF Secretary Laura Howard. “The approaches by the agencies span a number of thoughtful innovations with an ability to have resources customized to meet a child’s or family’s individualized needs.”

Some grants include collaboration with agencies who operate similar programs or support youth requiring a therapeutic level of care.“DCF is committed to providing supports and services to all agencies sponsoring these types of homes,” Howard continued.The grants are effective March 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025 with the possibility of three one-year renewals. The remaining $1.2 million of the allocated resources will be available to provide other TFFH supports, training and services.Two Hutch Post area agencies are part of the grantees.Eckerd Connects plans to support 5 to 8 TFFH, with an initial award of $131,117 and a total possible award of $332,014.Eckerd Connects will establish five to eight TFFH homes in Sedgwick, Butler, Cowley, Sumner, and Reno counties to provide TFFH services to youth placed in these homes. The approach will include a recruiter/trainer, clinical licensed mental health professional, respite, support groups, mentoring, flex funds and specialized training for TFFH. Eckerd will make their Functional Family Therapy program available to assist with care coordination and rapid response to support TFFH placements. Eckerd is creating a TFFH Peer Respite model to ensure respite support is available to families providing TFFH as well as accessing flex fund supports for TFFH.Foster Adopt Connect plans to support rapid expansion of their Behavioral Intervention Program, with an initial award of&nbsp;$82,930 and a total possible award of&nbsp;$189,507.&nbsp;Foster Adopt Connect will support a rapid expansion of their Behavioral Intervention (BI) Program into Johnson, Wyandotte, Bourbon, Crawford, Shawnee, Douglas, Leavenworth, Reno and Ellis counties. BI is an in-home support that engages both parents and children with daily management of behaviors to decrease the need for short term hospitalization and assist with crisis de-escalation, re-direction, and the teaching of positive replacement behaviors to the youth.
