HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No depth, no problem for Connors State. Once again, the No. 19 Cowboys knock off the higher seed. This time it was the No. 3 Salt Lake CC Bruins in a 67-61 win Tuesday at the Sports Arena.
Connors State played the entire game with Salt Lake with two subs off the bench. The Bruins scored 20 bench points to Connors State's two.
At halftime, Connors led 29-22. With about 12 minutes left in the second, Salt Lake took the advantage and then led down the stretch with Connors close behind.
The Cowboys started to inch closer to a comeback with nine minutes left in the game. Sophomore forward Brayden Hubbard hit a 3-point jumper to make it a two point game at 45-43.
Connors took the lead with just 3:20 left to go in the game with a layup from sophomore guard Donyae May.
Freshman forward Buddy Hammer Jr. led Connors State with 22 points. Hubbard had 18 and recorded four steals. Sophomore guard CJ Luster led Salt Lake with 17 points.
Connors State will play the winner of No. 11 Hutchinson CC and No.6 Chipola in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 27 at 7:15 p.m.
