A 23-year-old Hutchinson man is facing a long list of charges after allegedly committing two armed robberies, leading officers on a pursuit, and barricading himself inside an occupied home Sunday evening.

According to the Hutchinson Police Department, officers were dispatched around 7:19 p.m. on July 13 to a business in the 500 block of East 17th Avenue for an armed robbery. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already fled. Officers and deputies with the Reno County Sheriff’s Office began searching the area.

Just over 20 minutes later, at about 7:41 p.m., police were called to a second armed robbery at a business in the 400 block of East 4th Avenue. Investigators say the suspect description matched the first incident.

At approximately 7:52 p.m., officers located the suspect vehicle near 17th Avenue and Plum Street. When a deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit that ended when the suspect crashed into a residence in the 400 block of East 18th Avenue. The suspect then fled into an occupied home but was quickly taken into custody.

Police say the vehicle used in the robberies was reported stolen earlier that day from the 1600 block of Center Street.

Malachi J. Sims, 23, was arrested and booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility. No injuries were reported during the incidents.

“All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court,” the department said in a release.

Hutchinson police expressed their gratitude to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, South Hutchinson Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Haven Police Department for their assistance in the case.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School’s athletics and activities teams are wrapping up a busy summer and looking ahead to a strong start for the new school year — beginning with a sold-out Mike Kinney Cup golf tournament this weekend.&nbsp;

Steve Kappenman, Activities and Athletic Director for Hutchinson Public Schools, says the tournament, which will be held Saturday at Carey Park, has reached its capacity with 36 teams signed up — the largest turnout in the event’s history.&nbsp;

“We’re excited to max it out this year,”&nbsp;Kappenman&nbsp;said. “It’s the most teams we’ve ever had. It’s a great way to bring alumni, coaches, and community supporters together to have fun and raise money for our Salthawk programs.”&nbsp;

Registration opens at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. &nbsp;

Beyond the golf course, Hutch High athletes and coaches have been hard at work this summer with a full slate of sports camps, facility upgrades, and community fundraisers. The school’s football team is out in the community selling Salthawk Gold Cards — discount cards that offer savings at local businesses and help cover program costs.&nbsp;

“It really pays for itself if you eat out or shop around town,”&nbsp;Kappenman&nbsp;said. “It’s one of the ways we make sure our teams have what they need.”&nbsp;

Youth participation has also been strong, with recent basketball and football camps drawing dozens of kids. Volleyball camps, led by Coach Josie Armstrong, packed all three courts in the Salthawk Activity Center.&nbsp;

Facility improvements are underway as well. The high school is creating a new hospitality room and giving the south gym a fresh look with new paint and padding. Even the track at Don Michael Field got a summer facelift with fresh lines.&nbsp;

As the fall season approaches, Salthawk fans can expect some new faces on the sidelines. Among them is Cidy Vargas, who was named head coach for boys soccer, and,&nbsp;Marcus Moeder&nbsp;who will step into the role of head track coach. Kappenman says both bring energy and experience to the programs.&nbsp;

Kappenman, who just marked his first anniversary as activities and athletic director, says the summer grind is all part of building for the future.&nbsp;

“There’s a lot going on, but it’s exciting,” he said. “The goal is to keep kids engaged, help our coaches succeed, and make sure we’re ready when the season starts.”&nbsp;

Varsity football kicks off September 5 with back-to-back road games against Andover Central and Valley Center. Until then, the Salthawks hope to see community members at the golf course, in the stands, or at their door with a Gold Card.&nbsp;

Full Field, Full Summer: Hutch High gears up with Mike Kinney Cup and community support

It’s almost Reno County Fair time, and organizers are gearing up for a week packed with classic competitions, community events, and family-friendly activities that celebrate the best of summer and local youth achievement.

This year’s fair officially begins Thursday, July 24, but the excitement starts early with the annual dog show this Saturday at the Meadowlark Building, where local kids will compete in everything from showmanship to obedience.

“It’s a great opportunity to showcase all these kids and the hard work they’ve put in all summer long,” said Clint Lanning, Reno County Fair Board President. “From woodworking and photography to livestock shows, there’s something for everyone.”

Lanning emphasized that the fair is more than just 4-H projects — it’s open to everyone in the community through the Open Class competitions. Adults and kids alike can enter everything from prized garden produce and quilts to salsa recipes, woodworking, or even professional photography.

“If you’ve got a prized tomato or a favorite pie recipe, we want you to enter,” Lanning said. “It’s a great way to get the whole community involved.”

This year brings a few fun twists. New to the fair is a butter sculpting contest — participants get 30 minutes and a one-pound block of butter to carve their masterpiece for cash prizes.

The always-popular Lego building contest will return, too, giving younger kids — including the “clover buds” ages 5 to 7 — a chance to show off their building skills.

The theme for this year’s fair is “A Walk on the Wild Side,” which will come to life Saturday evening with a free outdoor movie, “Over the Hedge,” sponsored by the Kansas State Fair, followed by “Water Wars” featuring squirt guns, water balloons, and help from the local fire department to keep everyone cool.

Livestock shows kick off Friday morning with the goat show, followed by the bucket calf show — designed to help younger 4-Hers learn the ropes — and Friday night’s Ranch Rodeo at the Expo II Arena.

Saturday features the biggest events for livestock fans: the beef show in the morning, sheep show in the evening, and the free outdoor movie and water games at night.

Sunday night, fairgoers can enjoy the traditional Blue Ribbon Barbecue. Tickets for the barbecue meal are available through any 4-H member or at the extension office. Along with great food, there will be a fashion review, scholarship presentations, inflatables for kids, and a pedal pull competition to qualify participants for the State Fair.

The fair wraps up Monday night with the livestock auction, where young exhibitors have the chance to earn rewards for months of hard work.

“It’s just a great chance for the community to come together and celebrate our kids, our farmers, and our neighbors,” Lanning said.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nick Hague cemented his dominance over the local golf scene Sunday afternoon, rallying on the back nine to win his eighth City Match Play title in the last nine years.

Hague, the tournament’s No. 1 seed and defending champion, edged No. 2 seed Mason Faucett in a dramatic final at Carey Park Golf Course. The match saw several momentum swings before Hague delivered a clutch stretch from holes 14 through 16 to erase a two-hole deficit and claim the title.

Faucett struck first with a birdie on No. 3 and extended his lead to 2 up after Hague missed a par putt at No. 8. But a wayward tee shot by Faucett on No. 9 led to a lost ball and cut the lead in half heading to the back nine.

After the players tied 10 and 11, Hague gave a shot back when he hit his tee ball out of bounds on No. 12, allowing Faucett to regain a 2-up advantage. They halved the 13th, setting up the turning point of the match.

Hague responded like a champion, playing holes 14 through 16 in two under par, including back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16, to square the match.

Both players parred No. 17, and Hague only needed to tie the 18th to secure the win. Faucett’s birdie attempt narrowly missed, and Hague held on to complete the comeback and secure another City Match Play championship.

The City Match Play was the first leg of Hutchinson’s summer golf championship series. Entries for the City Stroke Play, scheduled for Aug. 16-17, are now being accepted.

As families prepare for the new school year, First Call for Help is inviting the community to step up and help provide essential school supplies for Reno County students through its annual “Adopt-a-Student” program.

Each year, the local nonprofit provides backpacks filled with school supplies to an average of 2,000 students enrolled in both public and private schools across Reno County. For the 2025-26 school year, First Call for Help is asking individuals, businesses and community groups to consider sponsoring one or more students.

For a donation of $67 per student, donors can cover the cost of a backpack filled with age-appropriate supplies. To add a personal touch, each sponsored student will receive a card in their backpack that reads: “Here’s to a great school year! Your school supplies have been donated with funding provided by [donor’s name] care of First Call for Help.”

Donations can be mailed to First Call for Help at P.O. Box 2203, Hutchinson, KS 67504-2203 or dropped off in person at their office at 17 West Second Avenue on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A secure mail drop box is also available outside the office for after-hours donations. All donations for this year’s program must be received by August 1.

Students must pre-register to receive supplies. Pre-registration for qualifying families is open now through July 31 for children in kindergarten through 12th grade who attend Reno County schools.

For nearly five decades, First Call for Help has been a lifeline for Reno County residents in need — and next year, the organization will celebrate its 50th anniversary of offering vital assistance and hope to thousands.

First Call for Help was founded by community advocate Susie Christopher, who, back in the 1970s, recognized the simple yet powerful need for struggling families to have access to basic hygiene supplies. What began in a janitor’s closet at Memorial Hall has grown into a comprehensive community resource with more than a dozen active programs.

“Susie started with just shampoo, soap and toothbrushes for people who didn’t have them,” said Dr. Marilyn Graham, executive director of First Call for Help. “Now, we have 14 or 15 different programs that touch so many areas of people’s lives.”

First Call for Help provides direct assistance and connects clients with a network of community partners. “If we can’t help, we’ll find someone in the community who can,” Graham said.

Residents of Reno County can qualify for services by providing proof of residence, household identification and income verification. Many clients walk through the doors with little to nothing, and the organization works to help them obtain IDs, housing, or other basic needs to get back on their feet.

The nonprofit’s headquarters at 17 West 2nd Street is open for walk-ins on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with appointments available Monday, Wednesday and Friday for those who prefer more privacy.

Meeting Back-to-School Needs: Adopt a Student

One of First Call’s newest programs is its “Adopt a Student” initiative, which aims to ease the burden of back-to-school expenses for families. With school supply costs on the rise, the organization provides about 2,000 backpacks annually to local students.

“We want every child to walk into class on the first day with the same new pencils, notebooks, crayons and a backpack,” said Graham, a former teacher and principal. “For that brief moment, every student is equal.”

The program invites individuals and businesses to sponsor a student for about $67, covering the cost of supplies and a quality backpack. Donations stretch even further because First Call can purchase items tax-exempt and often benefit from matching contributions by local retailers.

Helping Prevent Evictions and Utility Shutoffs

Another critical service First Call for Help provides is eviction prevention. If a family receives a 30-day eviction notice, First Call steps in to work with landlords and help pay what’s needed to keep people in their homes — buying time and helping families create a plan for stability.

“No money ever goes directly to clients,” Graham explained. “Payments go to landlords or utility companies. And many landlords are really willing to work with us.”

Other Ways They Keep Families Warm and Well

First Call for Help also runs the “Head to Toe for Reno County” program, distributing hand-knit hats, scarves, mittens and socks to families during the coldest months of the year. Volunteers in the community make and donate these items, and anyone can walk in and pick up what they need.

For those facing out-of-town medical appointments that can’t be handled locally, the nonprofit can help cover travel costs by providing gas vouchers — another example of meeting everyday needs that can otherwise feel out of reach for struggling households.

Graham knows firsthand the power of saying “yes” instead of “no” when someone needs help — a lesson she’s carried with her since she was persuaded out of retirement eight years ago to lead the nonprofit.

“I want things done quickly and in a caring way,” she said. “I never want someone to feel like they’re alone when they come to us.”

 With summer in full swing and visitors flocking to local events, the Hutchinson Police Department is stepping up its traffic enforcement efforts to keep residents and guests safe on the roads.

Officer Lane Hammond, who’s served more than four years with the department’s Traffic Unit, says the department is now fully staffed — a welcome boost to ongoing safety campaigns like the “Click It or Ticket” initiative and the annual July Speeding Campaign.

The speeding campaign, sponsored by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), runs through July 15 and focuses on cracking down on drivers who exceed speed limits, especially in high-traffic areas near fairgrounds and downtown. “We’re just trying to get people to slow down again,” Hammond said, adding that the program doesn’t cost the city thanks to state funding.

Hammond reminds drivers to pay close attention to changing speed limits, especially downtown. Main Street, for example, varies from 30 mph to 20 mph depending on the block. Residential streets remain at 30 mph unless otherwise posted.

The department’s four motorcycle officers — now riding two new Harley-Davidsons alongside older models — will be highly visible during the campaign. They use radar and lidar guns to detect speeding vehicles and are easily spotted thanks to their updated uniforms.

With Hutchinson seeing frequent construction and resurfacing projects, Hammond urges drivers to slow down in neighborhoods and watch for equipment on the roads. He also reminds motorists about Kansas’ “Move Over” law, recently expanded to require drivers to move over or slow down for any vehicle on the roadside with hazard lights on — not just emergency vehicles.

Abandoned or broken-down vehicles must be moved within 72 hours to avoid becoming hazards, Hammond said.

Looking ahead, the department is preparing for back-to-school season with improved school zone safety measures. Three new flashing crosswalk signals are being installed, with more planned to help protect students crossing busy streets. Officer Hammond also noted that trouble spots like the pedestrian crossing by Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College are under close watch.

One recurring challenge for officers is enforcing proper merging and turning practices — and discouraging “J-turns” downtown, where drivers illegally cross multiple lanes to snag a parking spot. “Just go around the block,” Hammond said. “It’s safer for everyone.”

Hutch Police highlight summer traffic safety efforts

TOPEKA — Kansas education officials say nearly $50 million in federal funding for student learning, teacher development and other support services is now in limbo after the U.S. Department of Education abruptly delayed payments that had already been appropriated by Congress.

Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson said he was notified late on Monday, June 30, that the federal agency is reviewing several Title programs — leaving Kansas districts without a clear timeline for when the money will arrive, or if it will come at all.

“Normally we would receive notice by July 1 that these funds are being awarded for the coming school year,” Watson said. “Now, the funding for these programs remains uncertain as we wait for the U.S. Department of Education’s review.”

The delay affects multiple programs that provide critical support for Kansas students and teachers:

Watson warned that cuts to Title II-A and Title IV-A in particular could hit rural districts the hardest. Many rural schools rely on federal funds through the Rural Education Achievement Program, which gives them flexibility to use broader federal funds to meet local needs.

In addition to the delayed Title programs, the U.S. Department of Education has also suspended payments for adult basic and literacy education, including GED completion programs overseen by the Kansas Board of Regents.

“We don’t know when the review of these and other programs will be completed or if we will receive the already approved funding,” Watson said. “There is no timetable for when these funds will be released, if ever, and Kansas districts should plan accordingly.”

 </figure>MARC JACOBS Hutch Post&nbsp;TOPEKA — Kansas education officials say nearly $50 million in federal funding for student learning, teacher development and other support services is now in limbo after the U.S. Department of Education abruptly delayed payments that had already been appropriated by Congress.Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson said he was notified late on Monday, June 30, that the federal agency is reviewing several Title programs — leaving Kansas districts without a clear timeline for when the money will arrive, or if it will come at all.<figure>

 </figure>“Normally we would receive notice by July 1 that these funds are being awarded for the coming school year,” Watson said. “Now, the funding for these programs remains uncertain as we wait for the U.S. Department of Education’s review.”The delay affects multiple programs that provide critical support for Kansas students and teachers:<ul>
 <li>Title I, Part C: Migrant Education ($6.2 million) — Supports students from families who move frequently for work in industries like agriculture and food processing.
</li><li>Title II, Part A: Teacher and School Leader Supports ($15.8 million) — Funds professional development for teachers and school leaders to improve curriculum and instruction.
</li><li>Title III, Part A: English Learners ($4.8 million) — Provides services for English learners, the state’s fastest-growing student population.
</li><li>Title IV, Part A: Student Support and Academic Enrichment ($8.3 million) — Helps schools offer well-rounded education, safe learning conditions, and expanded use of technology.
</li><li>Title IV, Part B: 21st Century Community Learning Centers ($7.8 million) — Provides before- and after-school programs in high-poverty and low-performing schools.

 </ul>Watson warned that cuts to Title II-A and Title IV-A in particular could hit rural districts the hardest. Many rural schools rely on federal funds through the Rural Education Achievement Program, which gives them flexibility to use broader federal funds to meet local needs.In addition to the delayed Title programs, the U.S. Department of Education has also suspended payments for adult basic and literacy education, including GED completion programs overseen by the Kansas Board of Regents.“We don’t know when the review of these and other programs will be completed or if we will receive the already approved funding,” Watson said. “There is no timetable for when these funds will be released, if ever, and Kansas districts should plan accordingly.”

Running through Aug. 3, the program offers Kansas students in pre-K through 12th grade, along with one accompanying adult, free one-time admission to each participating attraction. Eligible families can claim passes through the free Sunflower Summer app and redeem them at the door. The program is open to Kansas residents only and includes students enrolled in public, private and homeschool settings.

This year’s lineup includes something for every interest, from historic landmarks to outdoor adventures, museums, art galleries, live theater and more.

Sunflower Summer returns Saturday with free access to 230+ Kansas attractions

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas State High School Activities Association has unveiled a new format and finalized sites for the 2026 and 2027 state basketball tournaments, bringing sweeping changes aimed at consolidating classes and enhancing the championship experience.

Beginning in 2026, multiple classes will share championship venues, a first since 1953. KSHSAA officials say the updated format reflects input from school administrators who favored grouping classes for semifinal and final rounds to create a more unified and high-energy environment.

In 2026, the semifinal and final sites are as follows:

“The KSHSAA is an association of member schools, and the school leaders have asked for class consolidation of championships,” said KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick. “This new format will achieve that result and provide a greater focus on the student-athletes competing at the highest level.”

All state tournaments will begin with quarterfinal games played March 10-11, 2026, and March 9-10, 2027. The semifinals and finals will follow March 12-14, 2026, and March 11-13, 2027.

Quarterfinals will be held at seven venues across five cities:

Quarterfinal matchups will be determined by the proximity to the higher seed, not by classification. Games involving schools more than 250 miles apart may be moved to centrally located venues. State brackets will remain unchanged after the quarterfinals.

“With the top four seeds earning the right to play close to home, the quarterfinal rounds will provide a better environment and experience, allowing more friends and family to attend,” said KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director Kyle Doperalski. “This new format is a win for teams and school communities.”

The new approach mirrors recent changes in championship soccer and football formats, which consolidate title games to increase visibility and fan engagement. KSHSAA says combining semifinal and final rounds for multiple classes will reduce travel burdens and make it easier for fans, coaches, and media to follow the action.

The changes come in response to a 2022 survey of member schools, in which each class expressed support for consolidating sites at the state tournament level.

As temperatures soar during the “dog days of summer,” Dr. John Austin with Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital is reminding pet owners that heat isn’t the only seasonal hazard to watch for. Local yards, ditches, and trails are full of plants like wild oats, cheatgrass, and foxtails — and they pose a bigger threat than you might think.

“These seeds, which a lot of people call ‘foxtails’ or ‘wild oats,’ are designed by nature to spread by sticking to animals,” said Dr. Austin. “The problem is, they don’t just stick — they burrow in.”

He says his clinic frequently treats pets for embedded seeds lodged in their paws, ears, or even eyes. Dogs with longer or curly fur, such as doodle breeds, are especially vulnerable.

The trouble comes from the seeds’ barbed tips, which work like tiny fishhooks. As dogs walk through tall grass, the seeds catch in their fur and can then pierce the skin. Once embedded, they can create painful abscesses that sometimes travel up the leg.

“About half the time, we’re able to sedate the pet and carefully remove the seed before it causes more damage,” Dr. Austin said. “But if it breaks apart or deteriorates inside, it can keep migrating and lead to repeated infections.”

Common spots to check? Between the paw pads, up between the toes, under the third eyelid, and deep inside the ears.

Dr. Austin recommends simple steps to help avoid this summer nuisance:

If your pet is persistently licking a paw, shaking its head, or pawing at its eyes, it could be more than just an itch. “These seeds can go places you’d never expect,” Dr. Austin warned. “They can even penetrate behind the eyelid or deep inside the ear canal, and they won’t come out on their own.”

If removal is needed, sedation may be required for the safety of both the animal and the vet team.

Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital is located at 1201 East 30th Avenue and opens early to serve pet owners in the area. “Stay hydrated and stay vigilant,” Dr. Austin said. “It’s the best way to keep your pets safe and comfortable during the hottest months of the year.”

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the Kansas State Fairgrounds again.

After <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/fdb90e4d-acec-4951-9aa1-8de848f1398b">Evel Knievel's historic jump in last week's article</a>, I wanted to focus on other great grandstand events over the fair's long history.

In 1908, the Strobel Airship moored at the fair to give twice-a-day rides. The third photo shows the winners of the first motorcycle races ever held in the state in 1910.

The sixth photo shows some of the first televised auto racing in the state by local KTVH-TV station about 1960.
