HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As a highlight of Hutchinson Community Foundation’s 35th year of serving Reno County, Match Day, the popular day of community generosity, returns May 1. The purpose of Match Day is to strengthen the endowments of local organizations.

"An endowment is a critical piece to having a sustainable, effective, nonprofit organization," said Aubrey Abbott Patterson with the Foundation. "They'll have a checking account they use for everyday expenses. We hope they have a reserve account with six to nine months worth of operating capital. Then, an endowment really sets organizations apart to say, we are planning for the long term. We are investing in ourselves and our savings account, so that over time, we know that we can become stronger and invest in ourselves at exactly the right time."

Members of the public are invited to demonstrate their love for the community by coming to the Wiley Building, 100 N. Main St., Hutchinson, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 1 to give to their choice of 38 Reno County nonprofit organizations.&nbsp;

"Inflation really knocks us down a bit," Patterson said. "An endowment builds that kind of hedge in. Over time, if the markets earn eight to ten percent, as we've shown that they have, we can still pay out every year, five percent of an endowment to the nonprofits. That money, they can come to depend on, while still putting three percent back into the fund. Two percent back into the fund for growth and one percent that pays the foundation's fees and keeps us going."

Those gifts will be met proportionately from the community foundation’s $100,000 matching pool.

"The way we will figure how much an organization gets is by the percent of the total that they raise," Patterson said. "If your favorite organization brings in 10% of the total gifts, our match will be 10% of our $100,000 matching pool."

State Fair Board to meet May 7

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College meat animal evaluation team wrapped up a strong spring with a national championship from the All East Intercollegiate Livestock Judging contest hosted by Mississippi State University April 18-20.

This was the inaugural event for junior colleges to compete in this type of contest in an organized setting. Not only was HutchCC the high-ranking junior college team, but they outscored every university team in the overall contest.

Eight freshmen and three sophomores competed in this all-encompassing three-day event that consisted of extensive evaluations of market cattle, swine and sheep.

In addition to their win at All East, the students were the high placing junior college team at the North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest in March hosted by the University of Illinois and ranked ahead of all universities there as well in the breeding animal selection contest.

The Hutchinson Community College meat animal evaluation team is coached by Kane Austin and assisted by Kami McComb and Will Banks.

HutchCC Meat Evaluation Team claims National Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you or your family member is getting older and looking to downsize, think ahead about what that might mean for your pet.

"A lot of it is knowing your pets," said Erica Miller, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital. "You went from your pets being able to run around and have all this land and kind of free roam and now, you're in an apartment. Your lifestyle changed. Are you getting up early and going on walks to release some of that energy for your pet. Are you doing walks after work? Can you go home at lunch and do a quick walk? Walks are good for us, too."

It's also sometimes best for the animal to be offered to a different owner who may have a similar living situation to what is being left behind.

"We'll have elderly clients that are like, hey, we've got to move," Miller said. "We can't take our pets with us. Rehoming is always an option. Sometimes that can be hard for the owner, but sometimes the owner knows. They're like, hey, I need to rehome my pet, because it's not fair to them to not have these things that they have always had. I want them to have those things. There's always that.&nbsp;

Miller says there are times where she's able to match up current clients with prospective ones.&nbsp;

"A lot of times, it's like, I don't want a puppy," Miller said. "I don't want to do the potty training. I don't want to do this. I want a dog that's already older and just kind of ready to enter the family. If you're talking with your veterinarian and you're in regularly, we know your pet. A lot of times we know if they'd be a good fit for someone who is looking for someone just like them."

Think of pets when needing to change lifestyle

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the Justice Theater of the Shears Technology Center to act on the hiring of new Hutchinson Community College President Dr. Tricia Paramore.

Paramore, the vice president of academic affairs at HutchCC since February 2023 and a 28-year veteran of the institution, will become president of the college July 1.

From a beginning pool of 46 applicants, five semifinalists emerged and were interviewed by the search committee. The field narrowed to three finalists, each participating in a daylong interview on campus.

Hundreds of people heard the three finalists and were asked to fill out evaluation forms. The forms were then distributed to all board members for their review and to assist them in the decision-making process.

The details of the agreement will be part of the meeting minutes on Wednesday.

National FFA Scholarship Winners announced

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A group supporting Medicaid Expansion in Kansas, the Kan-Care Cyclists, are holding a bike ride in Hutchinson on Wednesday, May 1. The ten-mile ride will start at 10 a.m. at the south entrance to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and come back to the hospital around 11 a.m.&nbsp;

At 11 a.m. will be an event the group is calling the Expose the Truth tour, where they will have people speaking who they say are suffering for need of Medicaid Expansion in Kansas.&nbsp;

Kan-Care Cyclists coming to Hutchinson Wednesday

This past week I got to help with Pottawatomie County Farm Bureau’s Day on the Farm. Most of the schools in the county send their fourth-grade classes, and presenting at it is one of the highlights of my year. This year I got to talk about sheep, and I loved every minute of the day.

I was one of many volunteers including farmers, ranchers, law enforcement officers, extension agents, soil conservation representatives and many others who took time out of their day to share their slice of the agriculture pie with the students.

The kids had a million questions, and they were eager to pet the sheep. It seemed like we never got completely through the presentation before the horn sounded and it was time for them to move. I could hear a similar buzz from the other stations nearby.

Pottawatomie County has been putting its Day on the Farm on for more than 20 years, and I have had the honor of helping every year. This year the weather was perfect, but we have had years with wind, rain and less than warm temperatures. Even those years were great events and worth every minute of my time.

I also know what we do in Pottawatomie County is not unique. Many counties do similar events and others spend time going to classrooms to share their knowledge and passion for agriculture with students.

I start each session by asking the classes how many live on a farm. I usually get one, two or three. Then I ask how many have grandparents, aunts or uncles who farm or ranch. I usually get a few more hands but often we are only up to about half or less of the class. I consider Pottawatomie County a rural county and the first few years the numbers surprised me.

My little, informal survey highlights why we host these events and why we take the time to go to classrooms. Each generation gets farther and farther away from the farm and have less and less idea of how their food is raised. Education is the key to helping our future consumers understand the time and dedication we all put into growing the food on their table.

The time we spend hosting events like Day on the Farm or teaching in classrooms is one of the things of which I am most proud. It is also something that we cannot rest on our laurels, and I am sure we are not. Ag education will continue to be one of the most important parts of what our county Farm Bureaus do.

I am already penciling the Wednesday closest to Earth Day on my calendar for next year. It is an event I do not want to miss. I would also encourage each of you to contact your county Farm Bureau and volunteer to help with ag education, I promise it will be the highlight of your year.

Most of the schools in the county send their fourth-grade classes, and presenting at it is one of the highlights of my year. This year I got to talk about sheep, and I loved every minute of the day.I was one of many volunteers including farmers, ranchers, law enforcement officers, extension agents, soil conservation representatives and many others who took time out of their day to share their slice of the agriculture pie with the students.The kids had a million questions, and they were eager to pet the sheep. It seemed like we never got completely through the presentation before the horn sounded and it was time for them to move. I could hear a similar buzz from the other stations nearby.Pottawatomie County has been putting its Day on the Farm on for more than 20 years, and I have had the honor of helping every year. This year the weather was perfect, but we have had years with wind, rain and less than warm temperatures. Even those years were great events and worth every minute of my time.I also know what we do in Pottawatomie County is not unique. Many counties do similar events and others spend time going to classrooms to share their knowledge and passion for agriculture with students.I start each session by asking the classes how many live on a farm. I usually get one, two or three. Then I ask how many have grandparents, aunts or uncles who farm or ranch. I usually get a few more hands but often we are only up to about half or less of the class. I consider Pottawatomie County a rural county and the first few years the numbers surprised me.My little, informal survey highlights why we host these events and why we take the time to go to classrooms. Each generation gets farther and farther away from the farm and have less and less idea of how their food is raised. Education is the key to helping our future consumers understand the time and dedication we all put into growing the food on their table.The time we spend hosting events like Day on the Farm or teaching in classrooms is one of the things of which I am most proud. It is also something that we cannot rest on our laurels, and I am sure we are not. Ag education will continue to be one of the most important parts of what our county Farm Bureaus do.I am already penciling the Wednesday closest to Earth Day on my calendar for next year. It is an event I do not want to miss. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department was called out at 4:11 p.m. Monday to the 7200 block of North Tobacco Road for a reported brush fire with possible structures threatened.&nbsp;

The first arriving crew found two brush piles with 40-foot high flames and requested mutual aid from the neighboring fire district.

Responding units were able to attack the fire and stop it from spreading to the property to the north. The fire was controlled quickly and overhaul began. That required felling several trees and extensive overhaul of the brush piles.&nbsp;

It took several hours to get everything out, but no one was hurt and no property was lost.&nbsp;

Hutch Fire thanked Buhler Fire, Hutchinson/Reno County Emergency Communications and the Reno County Sheriff's Office for their help.

No Derby party for BrightHouse

RENO COUNTY — Current K-14 ramp closures at Wilson Road are expected to end sooner than scheduled.

The exit ramp from northbound K-14 to Wilson Road is now expected to reopen around 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 30.  The entrance ramp from Wilson Road to northbound K-14 is now expected to reopen around 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 1.

The following are new closures expected at K-14 and Wilson Road:

The exit ramp from southbound K-14 to Wilson Road is expected to close Wednesday, May 1, and reopen around 10 a.m. Friday, May 3. The entrance ramp from Wilson Road to southbound K-14 is expected to close Thursday, May 2, and reopen around 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4.

The ramp work is part of a nearly $3.6 million patching project on K-14. The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction north to Yaggy Road. The length is almost 7 miles. The work is expected to be completed around mid-August.

During the work, ramp closures will occur at times. K-14 traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers or a pilot car. Motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and face delays of up to 15 minutes.

Iowa Civil Contracting Inc., of Victor, Iowa, is the primary contractor for the $3,559,085 project.

K-14 ramp closure schedule changes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College has announced that Katie Ponce has been selected as the 2023-2024 Wes Christopher Ambassador of the Year.

Katie is a 2022 graduate of Macksville High School. In addition to serving as an Ambassador, Katie is also a Leadership Scholar. She is currently majoring in Pre-Pharmacy at HutchCC and will be returning for the 2024-2025 school year.

The Ambassador group, comprised of HutchCC students from all areas of the college, assists the Admissions Office with recruitment activities. They provide campus tours to prospective students and their families, help with on-campus recruitment events, and contact future students to provide information about the College. The Ambassadors are led by HutchCC Admissions Office staff members Lynnette Hilty, Assistant Director of Admissions, and BreAnne Edwards, Campus Visit Coordinator.

The Wes Christopher Ambassador of the Year Award is named in honor of Wes Christopher, a 2002 graduate of HutchCC and former Ambassador who passed away in 2005 as the result of a motorcycle accident.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Medical Center announced Monday the accreditation of its Behavioral Health Unit as a State Institutional Alternative (SIA) facility, effective April 30th, 2024. This accreditation signifies a significant advancement in HRMC's commitment to providing enhanced mental health care services to individuals aged 18 and above within the community and surrounding areas.

The accreditation as a SIA facility enables HRMC to admit patients experiencing mental health crises who would typically be directed to a state hospital. Patients arriving at HRMC through the Emergency Department seeking mental health treatment will now benefit from streamlined access to care closer to home, eliminating cumbersome wait times and the need for transportation to other state facilities in Kansas. Additionally, as an SIA facility, HRMC alleviates pressure on state-level hospitals grappling with overwhelming demands.

"We are thrilled to receive accreditation as a SIA facility," said JoAnn Rivera, Director of Behavioral Health and ICU at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. "This achievement underscores our dedication to addressing the critical need for improved mental health care within our community and service area."

Dr. Tan, Psychiatrist at HRMC and Horizons Mental Health Center, emphasized the importance of this accreditation, stating, "The recognition as a SIA facility ensures that members of our community facing a mental health emergency receive timely and effective treatment right here,&nbsp;instead of enduring delays being transferred to a state facility. Ultimately, this leads to improved outcomes and better mental health for our community.”

The process involved rigorous evaluation of HRMC's Behavioral Health Unit to ensure compliance&nbsp;with state standards for mental health care facilities. This endorsement affirms that the facility meets or exceeds stringent criteria related to patient care, safety, staffing, and facility infrastructure.

HRMC receives Behavioral Health accreditation

WASHINGTON —President Biden declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Kansas and ordered Federal assistance to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe winter storm from January 8 to January 16, 2024, according to a statement from the White House.

Federal funding is available to state, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storm in the counties of Butler, Chase, Cloud, Edwards, Ford, Geary, Gray, Hodgeman, Morris, Osage, Ottawa, Pawnee, Shawnee, Stafford, Trego, and Wabaunsee.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.&nbsp;

Mr. DuWayne Tewes of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed to coordinate Federal recovery operations in the affected areas.&nbsp;

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Biden approves disaster declaration for Kansas for January winter storms

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There will once again be a National Day of Prayer event in Hutchinson Thursday morning, May 2. 

It is again sponsored by Elliott Mortuary and will start at 7 a.m. with some light breakfast at Inspire Church (formerly Hutchinson First Church of the Nazarene) at 43rd and Monroe.

President Harry S Truman proclaimed a National Day of Prayer to be observed on July 4, 1952. 

Each year since that date, Americans have observed the day in their own way. The observance was moved to the first Thursday in May by President Ronald Reagan and has been proclaimed each year since.&nbsp;&nbsp;

National Day of Prayer event is Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Earlier this month, Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01), alongside U.S. Representatives Jodey Arrington (TX-19) and August Pfluger (TX-11), led their colleagues in introducing a Congressional Review Act (CRA) joint resolution of disapproval to nullify the Biden Administration’s final rule on oil and natural gas methane emissions regulations. 

"The administration continues this war on fossil fuels and biofuels, as well," Mann said. "Really, all things liquid fuels. They do that a lot of different ways. The most recent effort now is the EPA, with yet another regulation that would force monitoring of certain methane gas emissions from certain plants, certain oil and gas producers. The end of the day though, they are doing this in an effort to try to shut them down."

There is also currently a pause on&nbsp;approvals of new liquified natural gas (LNG) export projects. Mann doesn't think that's a good idea, either.

"In our country and in our state, we can produce a lot of natural gas," Mann said. "We have tremendous reserves. We ought to be using those, exporting those, benefitting from that, instead of the administration stepping in."

In a period where Russia and Iran are still <a href="https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atlanticist/the-axis-of-evasion-behind-chinas-oil-trade-with-iran-and-russia/">selling oil to China, despite U.S. sanctions</a>, these moves appear to be allowing those powers to fill in a market where the U.S. could conceivably be competitive, especially with Brent Crude above $89 a barrel as of Saturday.

"Don't forget, the administration chose last year to unfreeze around $6 billion of Iranian assets," Mann said. "You look up and a few months later we have this horrible attack from Hamas on Israel on October 7 of last year. Then, we have things like what we've witnessed here this year, with Iran directly attacking Israel. We need to make it really tough on the Iranians. Part of that is having a robust oil supply and oil production here in our country."

China has imported up to 1.5 billion barrels of oil from Iran as of February 2024.

Mann pushing back against 'war on fossil fuels'

LINDSBORG, Kan. — There’s one day of the year when history roars back to life for Millfest at the Lindsborg Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum. On Saturday, May 4, the main event is when four stories of machinery in the 126-year-old Smoky Valley Roller Mills again spin into action like they have since the late 1800s. 

Lenora Lynam, the museum Executive Director, said that since the Old Mill is the only working mill using 19th century roller mill technology in the Midwest, the opportunity to see what’s both a giant machine and work of art working as it has for more than a century is a rare experience. “It’s a tour that engages all the senses,” she said. “You can feel the floors rumble under your feet; hear the rattle and whir of machines, gears, and belts; see beautifully restored wood and metal equipment; and even maybe smell and taste a bit of the residue of grain dust in the air. If you haven’t gone to Millfest, you owe it to yourself to come.”

Tours run 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and cost $10 per person during Millfest, but all other museum attractions will be available by donation. For safety reasons, tours are restricted to those 13 years old or older, but when the mill shuts down again at 4:45pm it will open up to families with children ages 12 and younger to take a free mill tour.

New this year is axe throwing from noon to 3:00 p.m. from Oak &amp; Iron Lanes. Just $5 per person for unlimited times through the line! 

Music entertainment will be available on the museum front porch 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Local group the Front Porch Pickers will take the porch stage at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., while Lindsborg-favorite folk rock band Old Man Lingonberry performs classic covers at noon. This year in a new special treat, the music lineup will have “Bethany Goes to Broadway” at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., featuring show tune selections performed by Bethany College students who are coming back to Lindsborg just for Millfest!

Millfest is Saturday in Lindsborg

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council will deal with water issues at its meeting on Tuesday.&nbsp;

A municipal water conservation plan is on the council's consent agenda and they also have two pieces of business to attend to, a KDHE loan for a water line and a separate KDHE loan for meters.

The Buhler City Council meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the City Office at 219 North Main in Buhler.

Hutchinson local, Dr. Megan Bartley, OTD, OTR/L, is a pediatric occupational therapist and program director of Kitchen Hero Academy. Occupational therapy is a health profession that works to support the health and well-being of people across the lifespan through participation in meaningful and important everyday activities. As part of her doctoral studies in 2021, Megan used her expertise and experience to design this health promoting, group-based cooking skills program.&nbsp;

This program is for students who have completed 5th-8th grades in USD 308. No previous experience in cooking is needed. We’re here to teach our Kitchen Heroes all the skills they’ll need to make healthy, affordable, and delicious meals for a lifetime.

KHA includes weekly goal setting, hands-on cooking, field-trips, nutritional lessons, a family celebration dinner, and lifelong friendships. Our “Garden-to-Table” program provides a sustainable process of growing, harvesting, and cooking affordable and quality foods. Our data shows that Kitchen Heroes increased their preferences for healthy foods, food preparation skills, ability to make healthy food choices, their overall nutritional knowledge, and so much more!&nbsp;
