LINDSBORG, Kan. — The McPherson County Community Foundation (MCCF) has awarded a generous grant to establish a groundbreaking Cadaver Dissection Program at Bethany College. This initiative, made possible by the Foundation's unwavering support and distribution of the David J. Nutt Fund, will revolutionize the educational landscape at Bethany College and in the Smoky Valley community.

The grant, totaling $175,000, will facilitate renovating two spaces on the Bethany College campus to create a state-of-the-art cadaver dissection lab and update teaching laboratories. The College will actively pursue further funding to commence this transformative project.

Danielle Loder, Assistant Professor of Biology at Bethany College, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "This grant is a game-changer for our

students. The opportunity to engage in cadaver dissection will deepen their understanding of human anatomy and enhance their competitiveness in graduate programs and healthcare careers."

Interim President Steve Eckman commended the efforts of the faculty and staff in securing the grant, stating, "We are immensely grateful to the McPherson County Community Foundation for their incredible generosity. This grant will benefit our students and enrich the educational experiences available in the Smoky Valley community."

The Cadaver Dissection Program will serve Bethany College students and offer educational outreach to local high schools. The program aims to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals within the region by providing access to advanced anatomical studies.

MAIZE, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School Salthawks baseball team picked up a hard fought split on Friday evening in Maize, winning game one, 3-2, and falling in game two, 6-3.

The Salthawks are now 13-9 overall and will travel to Goddard on Saturday to continue its suspended game at Eisenhower, beginning at 12 p.m. The Salthawks currently lead the Tigers, 4-3, in the bottom of the third inning of game one. The game was suspended due to weather on Tuesday.

Game 1: Hutchinson 3, Maize 2 Lakin Franz struck out the final five batters he faced to slam the door shut on the Eagles, earning just the second win over Maize in the past 10 years.

Franz came in relief of JuJu Lyons who went 3 1/3 innings on the hill. Franz struck out seven of the 12 batters faced and only allowed one baserunner, a walk issued in the fifth. He then retired the final nine batters he saw.

Hutchinson took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from Jack Yoder, scoring Cole Bleything, who singled two batters earlier.&nbsp;

Maize rallied in the fourth inning with its first five batters reaching safely, but were only able to get two runs from it.&nbsp;

The Salthawks wasted no time to tie and regain a lead in the top of the fifth inning. Caiden Beavers doubled off the fence in left, followed by a walk to Bleything. Beavers scored from third on a pickoff attempt to tie the game at two. Bleything then scored on an error to give the Salthawks the 3-2 lead.

Landon Parks was the lone Salthawk batter with a multi-hit game, going 2 for 3 at the dish.&nbsp;

Game 2: Maize 6, Hutchinson 3 Maize starting pitcher Cooper Tannahill improved his record to 8-0 and continued his sub-zero earned run average, as he tossed a complete game on the mound, striking out six Salthawks.

Maize scored one in the second and one more in the third to take a 2-0 lead.&nbsp;

Hutch scored three in the fifth inning thanks to four Maize errors. The Salthawks only recorded two singles in the inning, but took advantage of the Eagle miscues to grab the 3-2 lead.

The Eagles responded with two in the fifth to regain a 4-3 lead and then added two more in the sixth inning to seal the deal.

Franz, Carter Morgan, Jack Davis and Merrick Giles each had a hit apiece for the Salthawks in the loss.

Eastyn Keeler suffered the loss on the mound, going 4-plus innings, allowing five hits, four runs, striking out one and walking five.

⚾ Salthawks earn tough split at Maize

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Farmers' Market is making an extra effort to get fresh food into the hands of low-income residents this year through a new Market Ambassador.

"She's going to have a table set up by our water and coffee that is strictly there to help you navigate the SNAP system," said Sparkle Faidley with the Farmers Market. "You'll come up, you'll swipe your SNAP card and you can get, say $25 in SNAP benefits from your card and you can spend those on vegetables, eggs, bread, we do not have dairy at the market right now. That's a very gray area for the USDA."

You can buy with a credit card, but it is an additional process.

"We encourage you to bring cash," Faidley said. "A lot of vendors already have a square reader, but we do take credit cards at that SNAP table. You can swipe it for $20, that's our minimum this year and she'll give you wooden tokens for $20 that you can spend at any vendor."

There should be lots of vendors there for the season opener.

"It looks like we're going to have at least 20," Faidley said. "We possibly could have a full house if everybody shows up. I know graduation and Mother's Day is coming up. Next weekend's going to be a little short, because we do have so many families involved with all the graduations in the area. We have flowers, we have baked goods, we have jams and jellies, lots of cold crops, so we'll have your lettuce and greens, broccolis, eggs, kettle corn will be there, honey, lots of unique gifts."

The Reno County Farmers’ Market operates in a city-owned structure located at the southwest corner of Second Avenue and Washington Street. The Reno County Farmers' Market operates Saturday mornings between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. from early May through the last Saturday in October and Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. from June through the last Wednesday in October.

Reno County Farmers Market opens Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man who tried to kill a woman and shot at a car with her and their children in it pleaded guilty on Thursday, before his trial was scheduled to start Monday.

According to Reno County Senior Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Rodebaugh, on Thursday Kamden Campos plead guilty to one count of aggravated kidnapping, no contest to four separate attempts to kill the woman, guilty to knowingly causing great bodily harm to the 22 month old in the car, as a&nbsp;bullet had entered the license plate, gone through the car seat and entered the back of the minor child.

Campos also plead no contest to attempted murder in the first degree of a baby who was also in the back seat when the car was shot at and plead guilty to two counts of criminal threat.

The pleas of guilty were admission of guilt. The no contest pleas were admissions that the State of Kansas had sufficient evidence to prove his guilt and that evidence was not contested.&nbsp;

The prosecution informed the Court of the factual basis to support the counts and he was then found guilty.

Sentencing is set in Division I on June 7, 2024 at 9:30 a.m.

Campos pleads before trial

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Grace Bible Church's Spanish-speaking ministry, Grace en Español is leading the Cinco De Mayo Festival on Saturday in Hutchinson.

May 4 at George Pyle Park, we'll have a lot of goodies," said Pastor Josue Pineda with Grace&nbsp;en Español. "It is really a nice, community event. We're excited to do it. All the prizes we're buying are from local stores like El Rodeo and El Patio."

The event is free to enter with carnival games, bounce houses, food, eating contests, live music and Mexican folkloric dancing.

"We are having lots of fun," Pineda said. "Lots of different activities for young ones, for adults, for any age. We have a basketball hoop. We're going to make a little tournament. We have mini golf, we have piñatas, we have a jalapeño eating contest."

The event is from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Ave. B and Poplar in Hutchinson.

Cinco De Mayo event Saturday in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The U.S. Senate passed a resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) – vice chair and chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science – to designate Friday, May 3, 2024, as National Space Day.&nbsp;Cosmosphere CEO Jim Remar was pleasantly surprised by Cosmosphere's inclusion in the resolution.

"I met with the Senator a couple of weeks ago in D.C.," Remar said. "It was after my meeting with him that his staff made me aware that he was penning that resolution for the Senate. It was pretty exciting."

Remar sees the inclusion of Cosmosphere in the resolution as a tip of the cap to what they do here in Kansas.

"We are one of the premiere space museums in the country," Remar said. "To have Senator Moran mention us in the same breath as Kennedy Space Center or Space Center Houston, to have the NASA Administrator here is very affirming for us."

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/8d16f532-0752-4678-b345-9dbc228b8dbc">NASA Administrator Bill Nelson visited Hutchinson in 2022</a>. Having the next generation of explorers get their imagination going about what's possible is one of Remar's goals at Cosmosphere.

"We are a science education center," Remar said. "We strive to ignite inspiration, get that spark going for the next generation, whether its engineers, machinists, astronauts, we just want to be able to get people excited about it."

Cosmosphere mentioned as part of National Space Day resolution

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) has scheduled two public hearings in June to give Kansas Gas Service customers an opportunity to learn more about the company’s recent rate increase request, ask questions and to make comments before the Commission.

On March 1, 2024, Kansas Gas Service filed an application with the Kansas Corporation Commission requesting a net rate increase in base rates of $58.1 million. The requested increase would affect the portions of a customer’s bill that relate to the delivery of natural gas by KGS, including the fixed monthly service charge and delivery charge. If approved, the average monthly residential bill will increase by approximately $6.71 (10.41%) for customers who use less natural gas (73 Mcf or less per year) and $9.48 (8.25%) for those that use more natural gas (more than 73 Mcf per year).

Kansas Gas Service provides natural gas service to approximately 648,000 homes and businesses in 360 communities in Kansas.

Preferred Real Estate merges with ReeceNichols South Central Kansas

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On the agenda for Tuesday's Hutchinson City Council meeting is a request to sign the application for a grant for the 2024 Transportation Alternatives program.

According to agenda documents, the Downtown Hutchinson Pedestrian Safety and Access Improvements project was deemed eligible for the program, now a full grant application will be submitted by May 17", 2024. This federal grant would fund 80% of the participating costs.

KDOT has informed the City that federal HSIP funding will be applied to the project to cover the required 20% local match. The City would be responsible for any costs deemed by KDOT to be non-participating costs and any costs that exceed the grant award.&nbsp;

This project has an estimated cost of $1,056,000 that includes construction, inspection, and design costs. The grant would provide 80% of the participating cost in the amount of $844,800. Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds in the amount of $211,200 would be applied by KDOT to the project to cover the City 20% match. 

The cost of this project is expected to be completely covered by federal TA and HSIP funding.

City to apply for grant for ADA ramps, sidewalk improvements

The regularly scheduled Hutchinson Land Bank meeting for Tuesday, May 7, 2024 will have a short agenda.&nbsp;

On the agenda is an application to purchase 712 South Maple and review and discussion of the Land Bank Strategic Plan timeline. The applicant for the South Maple property, Sasha Muniz, intends to build a small modular home on the lot and face it toward Avenue G and have its address changed to reflect that.

The Land Bank Board of Trustees meets at 2 p.m. in the Executive Conference Room at Hutchinson City Hall at 125 East Avenue B.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Traditions Health of Hutchinson, Kansas earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospice Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Hutchinson hospice branch underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with home health standards, including environment of care, infection prevention and control, emergency management leadership, and medication management.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Medical Center announced earlier this week that the hospital has been honored with the Excellence in Organ &amp; Tissue Donation Award by Midwest Transplant Network. Out of 242 hospital partners, only seven achieved this recognition.

Hutchinson Regional achieved an 80% organ conversion rate and 56% tissue conversion rate for 2023.

HRMC recieves transplant award

April showers bring May flowers, but an April without showers brings disappointment to a wheat crop that had a lot of promise coming out of the winter.

According to Ross Janssen, Chief Meteorologist for Storm Team 12 in Wichita, the precipitation in Dodge City last month was 0.02 inches, tying the 1909 record for the driest April on record.

What’s even worse than a continuing multiyear drought is the loss of hope being felt throughout central and southern Kansas for a crop that, in January and February, was one of the better-looking wheat crops they’d seen in the past ten years.

The condition of the crop has been deteriorating rapidly, especially over the past few weeks, going from 57 percent good to excellent on February 25 to only 31 percent good to excellent by April 28, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

It has suffered from lack of moisture for much of the growing season, especially during the spring green-up. The Kansas wheat crop is also ahead of schedule, with one-third already headed, well ahead of 9 percent last year and 6 percent average. A March 26-27 freeze event took a toll on it, as there was not enough snow cover, and the plants were more advanced than they typically are at the end of March.

Mike Hubbell, a farmer from the Spearville area in Ford County, said his wheat came up good last fall, received a decent snow in February, was pretty wet in late January and February, and was looking pretty good. However, the last decent moisture it received was on February 5. Since then drought has killed off some tillers and it’s going downhill pretty rapidly.

A field of T158, planted on September 28, 2023, showed drought stress and freeze damage. Hubbell said most of the fields in the area were the same, with brown parts across the fields, mostly due to the drought. He reports that wheat in the area still has some potential — if the weather starts to cooperate from here on out and provides decent grain fill conditions.

In Rice County, Brian Sieker, who farms near Chase, said, “Wheat is just such a good thing in our rotation.” His early planted fields suffered the most from the freeze but are still his best fields despite that fact. Some of the late planted wheat didn’t come up until January. His best-looking field was planted to KS Providence on September 18, 2023, but even it was only knee-high because of the drought. Sieker credited improved genetics for giving it the ability to weather the drought as well as it has.

“In February, we had some of the best wheat we’d seen in years,” Sieker said. "Hope’s not a good thing.” This year will be his third year in a row with an insurance claim on wheat, making him seriously question whether he can justify the cost of applying a fungicide.

In McPherson County, Derek Sawyer says his wheat had a lot more hope in February than it does now.

“It needs a rain,” he said. His area received 0.5 inch of moisture in April, but that’s 2.5 inches less than normal.

He said he wasn’t overly excited about planting last fall, but with fall rains in October and some moisture through the winter, it looked like his wheat showed promise. After freeze damage and drought, that promise is withering away, much like his wheat.

“There was not enough snow when the cold snap hit,” said Sawyer. “There’s always a storm that wipes out our hopes. It’s all too common lately.”

He reports that his wheat is going downhill very rapidly, and some is even having trouble shooting a head.

The loss of potential for the 2024 Kansas wheat crop has been a disappointment to all who saw promise this winter. There’s still time for Mother Nature to salvage what’s left with some optimal grain fill conditions. Participants in the Wheat Quality Council’s annual hard winter wheat tour will have a chance to take a closer look at this year’s crop during the week of May 13.

KINGMAN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 1:30a.m. Thursday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Peterbilt semi driven by 55-year-old Drew Thomas of Wheeler, Texas, was northbound on Kansas 14 at southeast 50th Street.&nbsp; The semi hauling cattle drifted to the right and left the roadway. The driver overcorrected and the vehicle&nbsp; overturned.

EMS transported Thomas to Wesley Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

KINGMAN COUNTY — According to the Kingman County Sheriff's Office, they received support from across the county to respond to an overturned cattle hauler on South K-14 early Thursday morning.

Driver hospitalized after cattle hauler overturns 

KINGMAN COUNTY — Work will start soon on a $36 million project to reconstruct pavement and replace bridge decks on U.S. 54/400 in Kingman County -- from K-14 to the Sedgwick County line.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project is a little more than 7 miles long, from east of Kingman east to the county line. The new pavement will be on the same alignment as the current pavement.

Besides full-depth pavement reconstruction and grading, the project includes replacement of the two bridge decks over the K-14 interchange.

The work is tentatively expected to start around May 20 and be reopened to full traffic around November of 2025.

During the work, traffic on the four-lane highway will be restricted to one lane each way, and traffic will be shifted to the same side of the highway.&nbsp;Motorists will be directed to drive at a reduced speed. At the K-14 interchange, a ramp could be closed at times, and traffic will be redirected to another interchange.

The primary contractor for the $35,970,827 project is Emery Sapp &amp; Sons Inc., of Columbia, Mo.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Bob Fee, running as a Republican in State Senate District 34, said Thursday that after a successful campaign kickoff event on Wednesday, his campaign will be hosting events in multiple counties on Friday, May 3.

"We will start the day at The Hall in Medicine Lodge," Fee said. "We're going to follow that up with a small group luncheon meeting over in Kingman that I have a group over there putting together and then a meet and greet in Kingman from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Jeri's. Then, we'll be in Reno County, and we're going to be down at the Anchor Inn tomorrow night from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m."

The event in Medicine Lodge is from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday.

"It's a pretty big district now," Fee said. "This is really new. It used to be in the last few elections, the last 10 years, it was all of Reno County and half of Kingman County. It has morphed into all of Reno, all of Kingman and all of Barber County."

Fee is the President of Fee Insurance Group in Hutchinson. He is a Past Chairman of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America also known as the Big “I”.

"I'm a multigenerational Kansan," Fee said. "We have grown our family here, my wife and I and four kids and now two grandkids. We've grown our business here in multiple communities across the state. I'm proud of that. I'm very proud of all that we've accomplished. I'm proud of the community leadership and insurance industry leadership that I've been able to give over basically decades. I feel like the time is right. When I look at my grandkids and I look at what we need in our future and who is going to step up, I decided it was time for me to step up."

Fee traveling for campaign events Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tyler Ricker has been hired as Chief Financial Officer for TECH, Inc.

Prior to joining TECH, Tyler held several key positions in financial management across diverse industries. In 2015, he served as Site Controller at Lyons Salt Company, where he was responsible for overseeing the financial operations, internal controls, and the implementation of cost-saving measures. His strong financial acumen and strategic thinking contributed to significant improvements in the company’s operational efficiency.

In 2020, Tyler joined Capital III as Director of Accounting &amp; Finance. In this role he managed the company’s accounting and finance department. He played a key role in the development and implementation of strategic financial initiatives that supported the company’s growth and profitability.

Most recently, Tyler worked at InfoSync as a Senior Controller, where he was responsible for managing a large finance team and overseeing the financial operations of multiple business units. His leadership skills and financial expertise were instrumental in ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance with regulatory requirements.
