David Bontrager, 99, of Ellsworth, Kansas, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026. He lived a long and meaningful life defined by devotion to his Lord, family, steady hard work, and a quiet kindness that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

David was born on July 3, 1926, in Springer, New Mexico, to D.Y. and Susan Nissley Bontrager. The seventh of twelve children, he grew up around the Yoder and South Hutchinson areas, where he learned the values of faith, perseverance, and family that would guide him throughout his life. On September 3, 1948, he married Rosalee M. Sumwalt, and together they shared many years of love, partnership, and family life.

Family was at the center of David’s life. He was preceded in death by Rosalee in 2015. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Gayle Seibel, and husband Steve, of Wishek, North Dakota, Brian Bontrager, and wife Jan, of Ellsworth, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Beth Koechlein, who is survived by her husband Kevin Koechlein of Anacortes, Washington, in 2006. David also leaves behind five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, each of whom carries forward cherished memories of his steady presence, wisdom, and love.

David honorably served his country after being inducted into the United States Army in 1945. He completed Airborne training at Fort Bragg and was discharged in 1946. His military service reflected the strength, humility, and sense of duty that remained part of his character throughout his life.

Following his marriage to Rosalee, David farmed in Southwest Kansas for several years before the family moved to Scott City, where he managed a grain elevator. In 1973, David and his family returned to the Hutchinson area, and he later retired from Doskocil Meats as head of Refrigeration. In retirement, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially camping and fishing. One of the great highlights of his retirement years was the unforgettable RV trip he and Rosalee shared to Alaska and back, a journey that reflected their adventurous spirit and love of time spent together.

In his later years, David enjoyed living in Ellsworth, Kansas, where he made many new friends and became a valued part of the community. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his dedication to those he loved, and the quiet example he set through a life well lived. His memory will be treasured by family and friends who were blessed to know him.

A celebration of life will be held July 3, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Ellsworth Methodist Church, in Ellsworth, Kansas. A reception will be held at the American Legion Hall after the service. Arrangements and care entrusted to Hutchinson Funeral Chapel & Crematory.
