MARION, Kan. — One of the more popular lakes in central Kansas has been completely shut down after a blue-green algae hazard was declared.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued the alert for Marion Reservoir on Thursday. The KDHE says the problem is so bad at the lake that the Army Corps of Engineers is closing all campsites, parks, boat ramps and recreation areas until further notice.
The lake was shut down most of the summer last year because of similar problems, but the camping and recreation areas stayed open. Marion is the only large lake under any type of advisory at this time.
The algae may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.
Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure, but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat and headache. If you or your dog come into contact with algae, rinse the area with clean, fresh water.
