Officials investigate after explosion at Kansas grain elevator

COMANCHE COUNTY —Authorities are investigating after an explosion at a grain elevator in southwest Kansas.

Just before 6 p.m. Thursday, Comanche County Communications received a call from Protection Fire Chief Brian Harris regarding an explosion located at Alliance Ag and Grain, 108 West Chestnut Street in Protection, Kansas, at the concrete elevator, according to Britt Lenertz, Director of Comanche County Emergency Management.

 Protection and Coldwater Fire Departments responded. The Ashland Kansas Fire Departments was called in for mutual aid to assist.

 The site was secured by the Comanche County Sheriff's Office and Comanche County EMS were on scene to respond to any injuries.

After entry safety measures were taken, firefighters were able to enter the structure to assess damages. The explosion was contained to the outside leg of the elevator, grain pit and interior structures with no exterior damages occurring to the elevator.

Officials established a shelter at the Protection Baptist Church but no evacuations were necessary.  There were no reported injuries.
