HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Family Community Theatre is performing The Play That Goes Wrong Oct. 5-8 and Oct. 12-15 at the Flag Theatre.
"There's a lot of things that goes on, on stage, that, under normal circumstances, if it was a straight play, you would never acknowledge the four walls," said director Wes Bartlett. "In this particular case, it's a play within a play and the individuals that are on stage, a lot of them will deliver lines and make gestures, things towards the audience, which under normal theatre conditions, are no-no's."
Though the play may be new to some viewers, the style of humor likely will not be.
"I'm a big Monty Python fan," said actor Ethan Kaplan. "I'd say it's a very good mix of Monty Python, Sherlock Holmes and some of those variety of comedy sort of mysteries. What you're saying is how do you deal with the mistakes? Fortunately for us, because this is the play that goes wrong, you won't know if there's a mistake done by the actors that we're portraying or the actors we actually are."
If you like slapstick, there's something for you, too.
"It's a very physical comedy," Kaplan said. "We have a lot of bruises and injuries throughout. It's a play where the performers are trying to put on a very serious, very good play. This is their shot. As the title suggests, things just keep going wrong. That's where the physical and the language comes in, especially when the language doesn't make sense, because things have gone wrong."
