HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Sept. 11, 2001, Americans endured a horrific act of terrorism. With no thought of themselves or their personal safety, many New York firefighters and police officers rushed to action in order to save the lives of thousands. Unfortunately, many of those heroes lost their lives that day.

In an effort to pay tribute of their heroic, selfless act, Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD) members participated in the Wichita and Kansas City 9/11 Stair Climb over the weekend.

During these events, HFD members were assigned a fallen firefighter to honor and climbed 110 floors of stairs in memory of the 343 FDNY members who couldn’t complete the climb that day. Once HFD members reached the conclusion of their climb, they each rang the bell as they announced the name of their hero.

HFD had nine climbers (Emiliano Banuelos, Kolton Miller, Gage Reid, Dylan Lowry, Dylan Lesser, Jack Goertzen, Chase Manuel, retired Battalion Chief Rex Albright and Capt. Craig Walle) Saturday at the Wichita 9/11 Stair Climb and two climbers (Calen Dunn and Capt. Tim Morris) Sunday at the Kansas City 9/11 Stair Climb.

Thank you to the HFD members who participated in the climbs and a special thank you to all of the heroes that day, you are always in our thoughts!
