HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mimi Meredith with Cosmosphere thanked those that worked to make the public aware of the need for the quarter cent sales tax renewal that passed on Tuesday.

"We are so grateful for everyone's help," Meredith said. "From everyone who distributed and put up signs in their yard, to all of the wonderful people who welcomed us into their organizations and workplaces to visit about how important the quarter cent sales tax is, to the folks from the city, STRATACA and our own board who worked tirelessly on this effort. It means a great deal to us.

The tax distribution accounts for about 19% of Cosmosphere's operating revenue. Reno County residents get to go to the Hall of Space for free. This is not a new tax, this is the continuation of what has been a Hutchinson staple since 1994.

Over 20% of this tax is paid by people coming in to Hutchinson to shop.

The projected $11 million generated over five years from the renewal of the sales tax will continue to be distributed so that 47% of the tax goes for Hutchinson's street program, 33% to Cosmosphere, 15% for property tax reduction, and 5% to Strataca.
