KANSAS CITY —One person died in an apartment fire Monday in Kansas City.

Just after 1:30a.m. Monday, crews responded to what started out as an EMS alarm in 3100 block of Flora on the first floor of an apartment, according to Kansas City Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

On arrival, a second alarm, a commercial fire alarm, came in for the same building on the 5th floor. While one company handled the EMS call on the first floor, a second company went to the 5th floor to investigate the commercial fire alarm.

When crews reached the fifth-floor apartment, they encountered smoke and fire in the apartment and immediately requested that the alarm be upgraded to a working apartment fire. The crew immediately began a search of the apartment.

During their search they found an unconscious woman-in her mid-60s in the bathroom of the apartment. The victim was quickly secured and removed from the apartment building via a fifth-floor window of an adjoining apartment.

She was transported to the hospital in critical condition and later pronounced deceased.

The fire was quickly brought under control and contained to the single apartment. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by KCFD.
