HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 5-ranked HutchCC women's basketball team pulled away late to get past Barton, 74-64 on Wednesday evening at the Sports Arena.
Bree Horyna hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final minute to help Hutchinson (17-0, 11-0 KJCCC) pick up the win. Horyna scored 13 points and dished off three assists, while also going 5-of-5 from the foul line.
Hutchinson led by two after the first quarter (18-16), four at halftime (32-28), and two after three quarters (38-36).
The Blue Dragons knocked down a season-high 13 3-pointers in the win, while attempting a season-high 38 from behind the arc.
Hutchinson was led in scoring by Kiki Smith with 17 points, one of five Blue Dragons in double-figure scoring. Hailey Jackson (12 points, 8 rebounds), Journey Armstead (12 points, 4 steals, 3 assists) and Akaysha Muggeridge (10 points, 6 assists, 3 steals) each joined Smith and Horyna in double figures.
The Blue Dragons knocked down 10-of-16 shots in the field goal to finish the game 41 percent from the floor (27-of-66).
Barton (12-5, 7-4) shot 53 percent from the field (22-of-41) and 6-of-14 from behind the arc. The Cougars were led by Quezia Bertoni with 17 points, while Vivian Onugha added 16 points.
Hutchinson won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Cougars, 30-28. The Blue Dragons finished the game with 22 assists on 27 made field goals.
The Blue Dragons host Garden City (10-6, 5-6) on Saturday evening in the Sports Arena for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. The game will be broadcasted on KHUT-FM (102.9), as well as video on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.
