Steven ‘Steve’ Wesley Cardwell Sr., 72, died June 4, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born September 21, 1950, in Hutchinson, to Raymond Rex and Jacqueline Jane (Hines) Cardwell.

A Hutchinson High School graduate of 1968, Steven joined the United States Navy right after high school. After honorable discharge from service, he earned his master electrician license through his job at Adm Collingwood Grain in Hutchinson where he worked at as a Master Electrician.

Steve enjoyed fishing and camping, but his life mostly revolved around dogs. He was an active Board Member of the Hutchinson Kennel Club. In addition, Steven was a dog trainer, training dogs in obedience and agility. He also worked with therapy dogs and enjoyed taking them to hospitals and clinics as emotional support to patients.

On April 27, 1975 he married Paula ‘Susie’ Sue Fischer in Hutchinson. They shared 48 years of marriage.

Steven is survived by: his wife, Paula ‘Susie’ Cardwell of Hutchinson; son, Steven Cardwell Jr. of Hutchinson; siblings, Sue (John) Miller of Hutchinson and Rexann (Mike) Smith of Inman; granddaughter, Alison Cardwell of Leavenworth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at the Hutchinson Kennel Club, 131 S. Washington St. South Hutchinson, KS 67505.

Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Navy.

Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hutchinson Kennel Club or American Diabetes Association/ Kansas, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
