HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The celebration of the 60th anniversary of the historic Liberty Bell 7 flight of Virgil “Gus” Grissom kicks off on Thursday with Coffee at the Cosmo.

The free speaker series returns to in-person attendance on Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. with The Peril and Promise of Space Exploration, examining the risks revealed in the Liberty Bell 7 mission along with insight into the Mercury program goals and objectives, which formed the foundation of U.S. manned space exploration. Cosmosphere President and CEO, Jim Remar, will be the speaker. Coffee and pastries will be provided. Presentation will also be available on Facebook Live.

Grissom was the second American into space but his Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft was lost at sea. The Cosmosphere started a campaign to recover the spacecraft which was then restored by the Spaceworks crew and put on display at the museum.

July also marks the 55th anniversary of the Gemini X mission on July 18, and the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20. The Gemini X is also a part of the Cosmosphere collection. Several events are planned to celebrate July space anniversaries.
