Bessie Ruth Huxman, 92, of Pretty Prairie, passed away April 4, 2024, at Prairie Sunset Home. She was born June 7, 1931, in Pretty Prairie, to Tobias and Fannie (Graber) Schrag.
Bessie graduated from Pretty Prairie High School in 1949 and was senior class president. She was a homemaker as well as a dairy farmer's wife. Bessie also worked at Prairie Sunset Home, as an Avon representative and taking care of people both young and old. She also volunteered at Et Cetera shop in Hutchinson for many years which she thoroughly enjoyed. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting and was an excellent cook and baker. Bessie was a member of First Mennonite Church in Pretty Prairie where she was involved in music, Sunday School, and the Sewing Society.
On June 1, 1950, she married Clarence “Dale” Huxman, in Pretty Prairie. They shared 59 years together before he passed away on August 6, 2009.
Bessie is survived by her children: Lynette Peterman (Bill), Hutchinson, Dennis Huxman (Alice), Halstead, Cheryl Dooley (Tony), Haysville, Deb Ratzlaff (Ron), North Newton, Beth Darrow (Roger), Newton; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; infant daughter, Karen Sue; siblings, Erwin Schrag, Walter Schrag, Esther Albright, Ida Schrag, Emma Gehring, Joseph Schrag, Elmer Schrag, Elaine Goering; and infant, Johnny Schrag.
Funeral service will be 10 am Friday, April 12, 2024, at First Mennonite Church of Pretty Prairie. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Thursday with family present from 6 to 8 pm at Elliott Mortuary.
