At approximately 9:34 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputies, along with the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS, responded to a single-vehicle crash on eastbound Kellogg near K-96.

Emergency crews located a 27-year-old Wichita woman trapped inside an orange Nissan Kick. The woman, who was the vehicle’s only occupant, was removed from the vehicle, and emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures. Despite those efforts, she died at the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates the Nissan driven by the 27-year-old suspect was traveling eastbound on Kellogg at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway and struck concrete bridge supports near the K-96 ramp.

While investigating the crash, deputies discovered an note that contained information suggesting a family member had been killed at a residence in the 200 block of N. Mathewson.

Deputies immediately contacted the Wichita Police Department and requested officers check the welfare of the individual at the home.

When Wichita police arrived and entered the residence, they found a woman dead from multiple stab wounds. Two cats were also found dead inside the home.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the 27-year-old woman involved in the fatal traffic incident was responsible for the death of her mother before leaving the residence. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding both deaths, which are being investigated as an apparent murder-suicide.

This is a tragic loss of life involving two members of the same family. The Wichita Police Department recognizes the profound impact incidents like this can have on surviving family members, loved ones and those who knew the individuals involved.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the fatal traffic incident, while the Wichita Police Department is investigating the murder-suicide. Both agencies continue to work together to establish a clearer understanding of the events leading up to these deaths.

This remains an active investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
