HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The United Way of Reno County kicked off its annual campaign on Wednesday with campaign chair couple Ed and Carol Berger joining Lisa Gleason on the KWBW Morning Show.

"I was thrilled when Lisa asked if Ed and I wanted to do this," Carol Berger said. "Part of the reason is all of the things that are important to the United Way and part of their mission are the things that are very important to me. I volunteered for United Way over the years. It's just a wonderful organization."

The campaign chair is the one who gets others to help with the shoe leather work of fundraising in local businesses.

"Their goal was to form a volunteer team to help us run the campaign," said Gleason. "There is two and a half people at United Way that have to try to raise $1,250,000. We really rely on volunteers to help us and their job was to gather a campaign cabinet to help us make this happen."

The goal is the same dollar amount as last year, but with inflation, the organizations United Way helps have to make those dollars go even farther.

"$1.25 million is a goal, but that certainly is not a cap," Ed Berger said. "It's going to be our work to exceed that, if we possibly can. We didn't want to make the goal so far out of reach that we couldn't achieve it. We want this goal to be achievable, but we also know it's not a ceiling. It is certainly a target for us. We want to surpass that by every dollar we possibly can between now and October."
