HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Congress came home for the Memorial Day weekend, but Kansas Rep. Tracey Mann sees the approaching default deadline as the responsibility of the Biden administration, because the House passed a bill that could have been worked on before now.

"President Biden wasted 97 days, almost 100 days, more than three months, in being unwilling to negotiate," Mann said. "Speaker McCarthy and the president met February 1 in an initial meeting talking about this. The President of the United States was literally unwilling to meet for three months, but now here we are last minute."

The Republican House debt ceiling proposal was voted on April 26 and Mann voted for it.

"To be crystal clear, I voted to increase the debt limit as part of the Limit, Save, Grow bill," Mann said. "A very reasonable piece of legislation, it passed the House a month ago. It's a good piece of legislation. It would extend the debt limit. I wish the White House and Senate Democrats would just sign on to that and we could all move down the road."

It looks like an updated deal may begin the process in the House even before Congress gets back from the holiday and Mann said he expects to be called back soon after the holiday to vote, if there are substantial changes, with as little as 24 hours notice.
